A Colorado teenager who survived the mass shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora Thursday morning helped keep a young mother, her young child and her 4-month-old infant safe even though he was injured himself.
Jarell Brooks, 19, has been released from Denver General Hospital and is now recovering at home after he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg after James Holmes, once a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado, allegedly set off smoke bombs and opened fire on the unsuspecting audience, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 in the attack. He was quickly apprehended by authorities.
Brooks said that when Holmes started shooting everyone scrambled for the exits. While trying to get out of the theater, he saw a woman, later identified as Patricia Legarreta, struggling to get herself and her two children out. He said he crawled on top of Legarreta in an attempt to push her and the kids out the door but then couldn't get out himself.
Brooks told ABC News that even though he's recovering at home, he is still shaken by the attack.
"At the end of the aisle, I ran into a woman. She yelled, 'My kids!' and I saw she had two young kids with her," he told ABC News. "I made sure they got in the aisle and pushed behind her to make sure she got out of there."
That's when Brooks said he felt a shot to his leg. Brooks said he was shot in the thigh, and fell to the ground.
Patricia Legarreta was also hit.
"We fell together," Brooks said. "I picked myself back up and continued to the back exit door, on one leg."
Legarreta was at the movies with her fiance and their two young children that night when she was shot. Her infant son was on the floor but wasn't hit.
"I was thinking, I have to get this family out, without getting hit myself. I managed to do one," Brooks told ABC News.
Legarreta was hit with buckshot and released from the hospital Friday morning. She is now recovering at home, where she spoke with ABC News and confirmed what happened -- that when she stood up to move her daughter, she was shot, and Brooks hit the ground with her.
She said that she remembered yelling, "I got hit," and Brooks screaming in pain.
The young mother said that after the shooting stopped she didn't really know what happened but was relieved to know that there were young men like Brooks in the world.
"It makes me feel glad because I felt helpless," she said. "Everybody at that moment was going through it, and to know that someone had that mindset, it makes me feel happy to know that in times of trial, there are good people out there."
The reason Patricia Legarreta was alone in the theaters with her two young children is because her boyfriend/fiance, Jamie Rohrs, ran out of the theater leaving them to fend for themselves. The boyfriend actually got outside safely to his truck. Patricia later called him so he could come back to the theater and pick her and his kids up.
If not for Jarrell Brooks who knows what might have happened to her and the kids.
The boyfriend later proposed to Patricia and she said yes.

The suspect in the Denver movie theater shooting, who allegedly killed a reported 12 people and injured at least 38 at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," has been identified as James Holmes.
Holmes is reportedly a 24-year-old white American male, the Associated Press reported on Friday morning. The young man opened fire around 12:30 a.m. MDT Friday morning at the Century Aurora 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colo.
Law enforcement officers told ABC News that Holmes was dressed in all black and wearing a bulletproof vest and gas mask.
Moviegoers told the AP that Holmes released some sort of smoke and, at first, they believed the attack was part of the show. He reportedly entered through an exit door at the front of the theater, threw tear gas and then began shooting.
According to CBS News, authorities have found no evidence to suggest the incident was terrorism-related. Holmes was not on any watch list that could have alerted authorities that he was dangerous, NBC reported. He also has no military history.
Police found four guns at the theater including two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun.
Holmes was apprehended by police in the movie theater parking lot and did not resist arrest. The car he was driving had Tennessee license plates.
A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News that she was unaware of the shooting when she first awoke Friday morning and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She did, however, express concern that her son was involved in the shooting.

"You have the right person," she told ABC News, speaking on what ABC deemed gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."
Holmes had not had any previous run-ins with the law, other than a "minor" traffic ticket in 2011, police spokesman Frank Fania told "Today."
CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reported that police found Holmes' residence "booby-trapped" and discovered "buckets of extra ammunition" and some kind of chemical in his home. Police had the apartment building evacuated.
Thus far, Holmes appears to have been the lone gunman.
Snoop Dogg and producer Diplo have teamed up to record a full fledged reggae album where Snoop will be singing.

It's all reggae and he's singing and he's doing a f*cking awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song. ... We're going to get back into the production of it next month, and I'm really proud of that record. It's the first record I've ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing."
Snoop just released the first song "La La La" from the collaboration. Expect 17 more tracks soon.

When the file sharing website Megaupload was shut down by the feds in January several arrests were made including that of the company's owner Kim Schmitz aka Kim Dotcom. Others arrested included company co-founder Mathias Ortman, as well as chief marketing officer Finn Batao, and developer Bram van der Kolk.
The arrests occurred in New Zealand at the request of the FBI. The four were charged with "with running an international organized criminal enterprise allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy of numerous types of copyrighted works through Megaupload.com and other related sites"
At the time of those arrests Swizz Beatz, real name Kasseem Dean, was cleared of responsibility "because his role in the company was loose and unfinalized." Now according to MTVthe federal government is claiming that "Swizz was involved with the company and they are specifically using his involvement in an attempt to try the case in the United States."
Swizz was listed as a CEO of the company at the time it was taken down, but his lawyer would later claim that his involvement was only an endorsement and that Swizz had no real involvement in running the company.
The federal government is now disputing that fact. U.S. attorney Neil MacBridge says that Swizz represented Megaupload in front of the United States Trade Representative in December 2011, which indicates he was officially involved and gives the opportunity for the federal government to try a case against the site within the United States.
"After Defendant Dotcom became Defendant Megaupload's Chief Innovation Officer, the company appears to have employed at least two Chief Executive Officers in the United States: first David Robb and then Kasseem David Dean (also known as Swizz Beatz)," a filing by MacBridge connecting Swizz to Megaupload reads.
Swizz has yet to comment publicly on the most recent filing, but it appears likely he will be served a summons and have to defend himself in the upcoming court proceedings.
