A UK fast food worker built up a multi-million dollar fortune by selling drugs via the dark web after he became “addicted” to dealing in vast amounts of illegal substances.
Paul Johnson, who worked at KFC after getting a first class degree in business studies, ran his postal drugs business from his attic at home in Leicestershire, England.
Johnson's 28-year-old wife, Lia, was said to have turned a blind eye to her 32-year-old husband's criminality, which funded the cash purchase of their $226,000 home and two cars.
At Leicester Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Dean QC described Johnson as "a major importer of drugs.”
The drug payments were made by digital currency, bitcoin – concerning importation and distribution of almost 200 kilos of ecstasy, cannabis, heroin, cocaine and other illegal substances.
Johnson pleaded guilty to acquiring criminal property, a quantity of money, between February 2015 and December 2017, as well as supplying class A and B drugs.
Lia Johnson admitted acquiring criminal property, their home, and both defendants admitted similar counts in respect of both cars.
Paul Johnson was jailed for eight years while his wife was given a two year jail sentence, suspended for two years.
The court heard that in December 2017 officers raided Johnson's attic and seized $9,000 worth of drugs including ecstasy (MDMA) tablets, LSD, heroin and ketamine, as well as drugs paraphernalia.
Digital media investigators accompanied officers on the warrant and found Johnson on his laptop actively trading with cryptocurrency bitcoin.
They also found orders for drugs on his laptop.
The investigation revealed Johnson was trafficking drugs from a number of countries and using three properties he was renting as the delivery addresses and sending out deliveries by post.

RIFLE, Colo. (CBS4) – New information in the death of a 5-year-old girl reveals that Sophia Larson died after drinking meth from a water bottle. Sophia died on Dec. 12 while she was staying with her mom, Stephanie Alvarado.
Alvarado, Daniel Bello Alvarado and Karina Ceballos-Romo were arrested last week on charges that include child abuse resulting in death and methamphetamine possession.
Alec Larson got the call at 4 a.m. that his daughter was in the hospital but by the time he arrived, she had already died.
“He let me know that Sophie had passed away from cardiac arrest. And it just didn’t make any sense to me, she was too healthy to have a heart attack,” said Larson.
Sophia drank “meth bong water” from a water bottle containing methamphetamine, according to the arrest affidavit.
Witnesses told investigators that Sophia’s mother didn’t take her to the hospital right away after Sophia started seeing “monsters and demons” and was seeing double because she didn’t want to “lose her in the system.”
Alvarado told police that earlier that day she had been fired from her job after failing a drug test and she smoked meth on her way to pick up Sophia.
The Garfield County Coroner said that Sophia had a very high amount of methamphetamine in her blood and that her cause of death is attributed to methamphetamine intoxication.
Gayle King is responding to backlash over a controversial question.
During an interview with former WNBA player Lisa Leslie about the legacy of her friend Kobe Bryant, King brought up a sensitive subject: The basketball legend's 2003 rape charge.
The criminal case against Bryant was dropped on Sept. 1, 2004, after the accuser declined to testify. In August of that year, the woman filed a civil lawsuit, which was settled out of court on March 2, 2005.
In a two-part video posted to Twitter, the "CBS This Morning" host discussed the controversy.
"If I had only seen the clip that you saw, I would be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified, I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview, totally taken out of context and when you see it that way, it's very jarring," she explained.
She said that she was "advised to say nothing," but that wasn't "good enough for (her)."
"I wanted to get Lisa's take on it as a friend who knew him well. What she thought, where that would stand," she said. "It was very powerful when she looked me in the eye, as a member of the media, to say it's time for the media to leave that alone and back off. During the course of the interview, I asked follow-up questions because I wanted to make sure her position and perspective were very clear."
She added that she talked to Leslie Wednesday night and "believes (she) was OK with the interview" before pointing fingers at the network again.
"For the network to take the most salacious part, when taken out of context, and put it up online, for people who didn't see the whole interview is very upsetting to me and is something I'm going to have to deal with them," she said.
King said she had spent time with Bryant on "many social occasions," describing him as "kind and warm," and is still mourning his loss.
"The last thing I would want to do is disparage him at this particular time," she added. "I hope people understand that."

Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill have taken their years-long beef to a whole new level -- or we should probably say a new LOW because they're both leveling disgusting, unproven allegations at each other.
It appears Nicki's fired the first shot ... going off on Meek after seeing that he liked a meme that took a shot at her hubby, Kenneth Petty. Mrs. Petty then posted on IG, calling Meek a clown and alleging he's a woman-beater. She wrote, "U do IT for likes. #TwitterFingers beat women, scared of men."
She made it a double-barrel social media attack by tweeting, "You beat your own sister and taped it. Spit on her & taped it. Kicked me in front [of] your mother and sent her to the hospital. Sucking drake dick made u feel tough again. Move on."
There's no evidence to support any of those allegations.
It didn't take long for Meek to respond by roping Nicki's convict brother into the mudslinging. As we first reported, Jelani Maraj was found guilty of predatory sexual assault against a child, and just got 25 years to life.
Again, Meek's claims she knew about her bro's crimes and paid for his attorneys ... all unproven.
There's a lot more ... as the war of words continues, but you get the point.
As we've reported ... Nicki and Kenneth ran into Meek at a WeHo store last month. The confrontation nearly came to blows and an epic shouting match ensued.

SALINE, Mich. – There were tense moments inside a meeting meant to promote diversity at Saline schools on Monday.
The meeting was held in response to racist comments that surfaced on the messaging app Snapchat last month.
The district launched an investigation and found the posts were made by Saline High School students and directed at three black students.
A man who identified himself as Tom Burtell said he has six children in the Saline school district. He made comments that provoked the ire of parents and interrupted a father, who was talking about his child’s experience with racist students.
“Try being white in a black neighborhood and see what happens,” Burtell said.
“He was crying because of the abuse that he was enduring in this school system,” the father said.
“So why didn’t you stay in Mexico?” Burtell said.
Adrian and Lori Iraola own Chela’s with locations in Ann Arbor and Dexter. They said that for years their children have been targeted because of their Mexican heritage. They went to the district’s diversity, equity and inclusion meeting to support other parents fighting for change. They didn’t expect to have racist insults hurled at them.
“I’m glad that people are supporting us. I thank the gentleman for being vocal and expressing his opinion because it will make people realize that this is not a figment of imagination, it’s amongst us,” Adrian Iraola said.
They hope the Saline school district will make diversity training mandatory for teachers and that school officials will hold students accountable for their actions.
“To say, ‘The children are allowed to say these things because they’re kids’ isn’t working. It perpetuates racism within the system," Lori Iraola said.

Jay-Z says he and wife Beyoncé were not making a statement when they sat during the national anthem at the Super Bowl. He was just focused on his job as a producer.
At a Columbia University Q&A as part of a lecture series Tuesday night, a moderator asked the rapper — who co-produced the entertainment at this year’s Super Bowl — whether sitting when Demi Lovato sang the national anthem was “meant to convey a signal?”
“It actually wasn’t — sorry,” said the music mogul, 50. He said that if he’d wanted to make a political statement, “I’d tell you … I’d say, ‘Yes, that’s what I’ve done.’ I think people know that about me.”
But he explained, “What happened was, we got there, we were sitting, and now the show’s about to start. My wife was with me and so she says to me, ‘I know this feeling right here.’ Like, she’s super-nervous because she’s performed at Super Bowls before. I haven’t,” he said to laughs from the audience. “So we get there and we immediately jump into artist mode … now I’m really just looking at the show. Did the mic start? Was it too low to start? … I had to explain to them [that] as an artist, if you don’t feel the music, you can’t really reach that level.”
He added, “So the whole time we’re sitting there, we’re talking about the performance, and then right after that, Demi [Lovato] comes out and we’re talking about how beautiful she looked, and how she sounds and what she’s going through, and her life — for her to be on the stage, we were so proud of her. And then it finished and then my phone rang. And it was like, ‘You know you didn’t …’ I’m like, ‘What?'”
