On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was minding is own business while walking home from a corner store to his father's Sanford, Florida home.
Along the way he encountered George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, who reported Martin to the police as acting suspicious.
Zimmerman, armed with a Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm semi-automatic pistol, began to follow Martin despite being told by dispatch: "We don't need you to do that."
A short time later an altercation between the two occurred. During the struggle Zimmerman killed Martin by shooting him in the chest.
Martin was 17-years old at the time and unarmed.
The killing igniting a national debate on racial profiling and civil rights.
During a 2013 trial Zimmerman was acquitted on the charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.
An innocent life was lost while Zimmerman still walks around freely.
We'll never know what Trayvon Martin might have gone on to accomplish, but today we honor him on what would have been his 25th birthday. May he rest in paradise.
