SYDNEY (Associated Press) — An Australian woman was charged with murder on Sunday in the deaths of seven of her children and her niece, whose bodies were found inside her home, police said.
Mersane Warria, 37, was charged with eight counts of murder in a bedside hearing at a hospital in the northern city of Cairns where she is recovering from stab wounds, Queensland state police said.
Police were called to the home in the Cairns suburb of Manoora on Friday morning after receiving a report of a woman with serious injuries. When they got to the house, they found the bodies, along with Warria, who was suffering from stab wounds to the chest.
Police haven't said how the children died, but Queensland Police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said they're examining several knives in the home that may have been the weapon used to kill them. Suffocation was also a possible cause of death, he said.
"We are considering that and that's why it's taking a bit of time," he said. "It could be a range of things, from suffocation to a thousand other things."
Officials were still trying to determine exactly what happened inside the house, and had collected more than 100 witness statements, he said. A coroner was conducting autopsies, but police would not be releasing the results as the case was now a matter for the courts, he said.
The children, four girls and four boys, ranged in age from 2 to 14. Warria is the mother of seven of them; the eighth is her niece.
Police were not looking for any other suspects, Asnicar said. A hearing was scheduled for Monday, but Warria was excused from attending. Police planned to oppose any request for bail, Ascinar said.
"This is very raw and it is a very emotive time for everybody," he said. "The family is deeply upset but the community is pulling together. "
Asked how the children's five fathers were coping with the tragedy, Ascinar replied: "I don't think we need much imagination to understand how they are feeling."
Dozens of weeping mourners visited a makeshift memorial of flowers, stuffed animals and candles set up in a park next to the family's home. "My babies, my babies," one man wailed.
A church service was held on Sunday morning to honor the children and a candlelight vigil was scheduled for the evening.
The tragedy comes as Australia is still reeling from the shock of a deadly siege in a Sydney cafe. Last week, a gunman burst into the cafe in the heart of the city and took 18 hostages, two of whom were killed along with the gunman after police stormed in 16 hours later to end the standoff. Police had earlier said there were 17 hostages in the cafe, but revised the number after a new count.
"The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking," Prime Minister Tony Abbott said in a statement. "All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country."

A suspected member of the Baltimore gang Black Guerilla Family shot and injured an ex-girlfriend Saturday, December 20, before driving to New York City, where he killed two NYPD police officers who were sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn.
According to the Associated Press, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, walked up to the open passenger window of the patrol car and shot Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in the head.
“The perp came out of the houses, walked up behind the car and lit them up,” a high-ranking police official told The New York Daily News.
"They were, quite simply, assassinated — targeted for their uniform. ... They were ambushed and murdered," said Police Commissioner William Bratton
Brinsley then ran to a nearby subway station and shot himself.

Earlier in the day Brinsley warned his Instagram followers of his intentions.
"I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs," Brinsley wrote. "#Shootthepolice #RIPErivGardner #RIPMikeBrown. This may be my final post. I'm putting pigs in a blanket."
Rev. Al Sharpton said today's shootings were in no way connected to the Eric Garner and Michael Brown protests. He issued a statement after speaking with Garner's family.
“I have spoken to the Garner family and we are outraged by the early reports of the police killed in Brooklyn today,” Sharpton said. “Any use of the names of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, in connection with any violence or killing of police, is reprehensible and against the pursuit of justice in both cases.”

Brinsley was active on social media today. He reportedly stole his injured ex-girlfriend's phone and updated his Facebook page and IG with ominous messages.
In one of his last Instagram posts he quoted lyrics from 50 Cent's "Green Lantern" freestyle.
"Never had a hot gun on your waist and blood on your shoe...Nigga you ain't been through what I been through You not like me and I'm not like you."
The shooter was reportedly a member of the Black Guerrilla Family, who have declared war on the police, according to The New York Daily News.
“BGF has been talking about getting back at cops for Eric Garner and Ferguson,” a source told The New York Daily News.
The NYPD were warned about the threat of violence from BGF in a letter earlier this month.
In 2011 Brinsley was arrested in Georgia for reckless conduct, carrying a concealed weapon, tampering with evidence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as other charges.

Azealia Banks is on a roll. She's managed to squeeze beefs with Iggy Azalea and Action Bronson into the same week.
Copywriter Beth Kushner responded to Banks' beef with Iggy by asking how the rapper felt about more talented white artists. Action Bronson's name was mentioned. It seemed to offend him that his name would be brought up in reference to Banks.
Bronson and Banks then proceeded to exchanged insults about each others lack of talent and sex appeal. Action also mentions Solange and Q-Tip for their alleged support of Banks.

After feuding with Azealia Banks and sending out what some might consider to be racially insensitive tweets, Iggy Azalea has found herself caught in the crosshairs of Anonymous.
The activists and at times hackers sent out a series of tweets via The Anon Message Twitter account on Friday, December 19, warning the Australian rapper that she has 48 hours to apologize to Banks and peaceful Eric Garner protesters or watch her career go up in flames.
