(Sporting News) - Manny Pacquiao said Thursday that he will return to the United States next year to defend his WBA (Regular) welterweight title against Adrien Broner. The fight will be Pacquiao's first in the U.S. in more than two years.
Sources told ESPN.com the bout is likely to take place Jan. 19 in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs) made his announcement in Manila, Philippines, during a meeting of the International Sports Promotion Society, which named him an ambassador.
The 39-year-old Pacquiao has not fought in the States since he defeated Jessie Vargas in 2016 at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas to capture the WBO welterweight belt. He reportedly owes tens of millions of dollars in federal income taxes even though he made in excess of $150 million for his 2015 bout vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
His last fight took place in Malaysia, where scored a seventh-round knockout of Lucas Matthysse in July for his first KO victory in more than eight years.
Broner has a professional record of (33-3-1-1 (DQ), 24 KOs).

Mayweather also offered an explanation as to why he's taking fights with guys who don't traditionally box.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has accepted UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's challenge to fight.
"We're fighting," Mayweather told TMZ Sports. "I'm my own boss. I can't say what's going on on Khabib's end, but on my end we can make it happen."
Money May added that the fight would definitely take place in a boxing ring.
"Who's the 'A-side?' He called me out so you have to come to my world," Mayweather said. "I seen in an interview, he said when he hit Conor McGregor, he knocked Conor McGregor down. He said I didn't knock Conor McGregor down. OK, Khabib. You got my leftovers. Whoop-dee-do."
According to Mayweather, 41, a fight against Nurmagomedov, 30, would produce a higher paycheck than the one he received to box McGregor last year. Mayweather won that fight by TKO in the 10th round.
"When I face Khabib, I'm getting a nine-figure payday," Mayweather said. "Yes, more than the McGregor fight. Probably $100 million more, guaranteed. It could be somewhere upwards of $110 to $200 million guaranteed."
Both fighters are undefeated.
Nurmagomedov is 27-0 in MMA. Mayweather sports a boxing record of 50-0.
