SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An intruder attacked & severely beat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer in the couple’s San Francisco home early Friday while searching for the Democratic leader & chillingly shouting: “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?”
Police were called to the home to check on Paul Pelosi at about 2:30 a.m. when they discovered the 82-year-old & the suspect, 42-year-old David Depape, both grabbing onto the hammer. The intruder yanked it from Pelosi & began beating him before being subdued & arrested by officers.
The speaker was in Washington, where she had been scheduled to appear with Vice President Kamala Harris at a fundraising event Saturday night for the LGBTQ group Human Rights Campaign, 11 days before congressional elections that have been filled with harsh, sometimes violent rhetoric.
The intruder’s shouts in Pelosi’s California home were an unsettling echo of the chants during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden’s election searched menacingly through the halls for the speaker. Police said a motive for Friday’s intrusion was still being determined, but 3 people with knowledge of the investigation said that Depape targeted Pelosi’s home.
Lawmakers from both parties reacted with shock and expressed their well wishes to the Pelosi family.
“What happened to Paul Pelosi was a dastardly act,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on Twitter, “Horrified & disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery & that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

A 28-year-old woman who previously told police she was too good-looking to be arrested is now accused of killing her mother.
Las Vegas Metro police said Hend Bustami killed her 62-year-old mother Wednesday morning.
Officers began looking for the daughter after finding the mother’s body. California Highway Patrol took Bustami into custody in Barstow, California.
Police said in August they arrested Bustami for reportedly skipping out on a restaurant tab & violating airport rules at Harry Reid International Airport. Bustami told officers at the time that she was under arrest because she was so good-looking.
“Soon after, officers working D gates were notified by TSA that [a] female matching that description was observed sleeping near the security checkpoint, hindering their operations,” the report said.
Officers later found Bustami in the baggage claim area where she was “belligerent with officers, saying she was being harassed because cops [had] never seen anyone as pretty as her.”
While officers were arresting her, Bustami said “that she was going to spit on all [the officers] & that officers were perverts & were trying to rape her because they [had] never seen anyone as good looking.”
Police later learned Bustami had a warrant out of Las Vegas Municipal Court. She was booked into the Clark County Detention Center & later released. She will be brought back to Nevada to face a murder charge.

A Houston janitor accused of urinating into a fellow employee’s water bottle could be facing additional charges now that 13 other people have come forward with similar complaints.
Lucio Catarino Diaz, 50, was arrested last week & charged with indecent assault & aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a female co-worker accused him of the incident, which she said took place at a medical office building.
“This individual is a sick man,” the unidentified woman told ABC affiliate KTRK TV.
The woman told the station that she first noticed a foul odor in the employee water dispenser in August & decided to drink only from water bottles that she brought from home.
Last month, she came to suspect her own water bottle had been tainted, which was later confirmed by a urinalysis.

A woman in Indonesia's Jambi province was killed & swallowed whole by a python.
Jahrah, a rubber-tapper reportedly in her 50s, had made her way to work at a rubber plantation on Sunday morning.
She was reported missing after failing to return that night & search parties sent out to find her. A day later villagers found a python with what appeared to be a large stomach.
Locals later killed the snake & found her body inside.
"The victim was found in the snake's stomach," Betara Jambi police chief AKP S Harefa said, adding that her body appeared to be largely intact when it was found.
He said the victim's husband had on Sunday night found some of her clothes & tools she had used at the rubber plantation, leading him to call on a search party.
After the snake - which was more than 20 feet — long - was spotted on Monday, villagers then caught & killed it to verify the victim's identity.
"After they cut the belly apart, they found it was Jahrah inside," Mr Harefa said.
Though such incidents are rare, this is not the first time someone in Indonesia has been killed & eaten by a python. 2 similar deaths were reported in the country between 2017 & 2018.
How can a snake eat a human?
Pythons swallow their food whole. Their jaws are connected by very flexible ligaments so they can stretch around large prey.
"In essence they can go as large as their prey goes," said Mary-Ruth Low, conservation & research officer for Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
That can include animals as large as pigs or even cows.
