They blame everything on rap music -- why not throw the eighties crack epidemic in there while they're at it?

VH1's new documentary 'Planet Rock: The Story Of Hip Hop And The Crack Generation' promises to tell the story of how hip-hop and crack became intertwined with the explosion of crack use during the early eighties.

Executive produced and narrated by ICE-T, 'Planet Rock' will also feature appearances from RZA, Snoop Dogg, B-Real, Azie Faison "Freeway" Ricky Ross and Raekwon.

Read The Full Press Release Below From VH1.

NEW YORK, NY –August 9, 2011- Twenty-five years after crack cocaine ravaged American cities, a new VH1 Rock Doc explores how the drug also transformed popular culture, especially hip-hop. The latest addition to the Emmy-winning franchise, Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation, premieres Sunday, September 18 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.

Narrated and executive produced by Ice-T, Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation, is the first documentary to focus specifically on the connections between crack and hip-hop. Based primarily on the first-person accounts of four famous dealers-turned-rappers, the film also widens its lens at points to show how crack changed America culturally, socially and politically. Using rare footage, photos, and animation, all set to the beats and rhymes of the iconic hip hop tracks of the day, the documentary explores how media hysteria, racism and political reaction produced policies and laws that have left us with the largest —and most disproportionately African-American— prison population in the world.

Crack first appeared in the early 1980s, but by 1986, it was raging through the inner cities of America like wildfire, leaving pain, grief, and death in its wake. With candid, never-before-seen interviews from survivors, including Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill’s B-Real, and the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and Raekwon, Planet Rock examines the hardships young men encountered growing up in impoverished neighborhoods, which led many to deal crack cocaine as their only way out. This destructive drug not only provided an escape, but also paved the way for an entrance into hip-hop.

More than any other art form, hip-hop reflected and documented the crack epidemic. The chaos and madness of the crack phenomenon was fused with the sound and style of hip-hop during its formative years. From the gold dookie chain to Gucci, many hip-hop artists were influenced by the look and fashion of infamous dealers like Azie Faison in Harlem, who is prominently featured in the documentary, along with Freeway Ricky Ross, the Godfather of Crack in LA. As hip-hop became increasingly popular, the fascination with crime and gangster culture, specifically the violence inherent in crack culture, became ingrained in the music. And soon the very kids dealing crack were turning their street tales into hit records. After serving hard time in jail, Snoop Dogg became the biggest rapper of his day; after a bullet in the back nearly killed him, B Real went legit with Cypress Hill; and after crafting their business model on the crack hustle, RZA and Raekwon turned the Wu Tang Clan into a hip hop empire. As journalist Cheo Choker reflects, “it’s fascinating to think that Jay Z, a global icon who had better seats at President Obama’s inauguration than Jesse Jackson, was once a New York City crack dealer.”

Last month 50 Cent announced plans to feed 1 billion Africans in need over the next five years.

"I want to impact people's lives more," he wrote on Twitter at the time. "I've set a new goal for myself. I want to feed a billion people in Africa over the next five years."

Today we know exactly how 50 plans to make that lofty goal a reality.

The G-Unit boss has teamed with Chris Clarke, Founder and CEO of Pure Growth Partners, to develop an energy shot. Part of the proceeds from each shot sold will go towards feeding a child in need.

50 Cent and I share a common vision: to address the world’s problems through smart and sustainable business models,” Clarke said in a statement to BevIndustry.com. “With the rampant starvation in Africa and hunger afflicting children worldwide, we need socially responsible businesses that affect real change now more than ever. And Street King can set the bar for future generations to come.

Launching in September, the new Street King shot will range in prices from $2.49 to $2.99 and will be available in Orange Mango and Grape flavors.

The energy shot contains 100 percent natural flavors, no artificial colors and is made with a natural source of caffeine, which is derived from coffee beans, the company says. Each 2.5-ounce shot contains an amount of caffeine that is comparable to a cup of coffee, but contains zero carbohydrates, calories and sugar. Street King’s Grape variety also is fortified with vitamins and gingko biloba.

50 Cent said he's happy to be on board.

I’m inspired by [Clarke’s] vision and innovative approaches to tackling serious issues. It’s our mission with Street King to really change children’s lives around the world,” 50 said in a statement.

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is becoming a jack of all trades. Already considered to be one of the two best fighters in the world, Pacquiao is also Congressman in the Republic of the Philippines, and a budding singer.

Pacquiao's remake of Dan Hill‘s 1977 song "Sometimes When We Touch," has risen to no. 7 on the Secondary Adult Contemporary chart according to USA Today.

"Manny leaping from No. 11 to No. 7 on the Adult Contemporary secondary charts reminds us once more that there's nothing this man/boxer/congressman/singer is not capable of," said Hill. "I'm so proud to call him my friend and a major life inspiration."

Check out the song below and let us know what you think.

The-Dream is keeping very busy these days.

The 34-year old singer/songwriter is dropping a new mixtape this month, has a new studio album due later this year, and he's just announced he wants to form a hip-hop rock band with a political message.

I’m listening to music for a future band I haven’t made yet. I have 53 records and a direction for a new NWA type Hip-Hop Rock band. Real messages, very political," he told HHNM.

Should be pretty interesting, we can't wait to hear it.

David Banner drops a new track that might make some people feel uncomfortable, but that is by design.

The Mississippi spitter raps about negative ways the word "swag" is being used in today's hip hop.

"The homies is busting slugs/ The women is shaking ass/ Some white girl calls us N*gger and we just sit back and laugh/ We call it SWAG," he raps on the chorus.

The last line is a direct shot at the White Girls Mob crew of Kreayshawn, V-Nasty and Lil Debbie, but the song as a whole addresses a lot of hip hop artists who have OD'd on the word "swag" and associate things both good and bad with it.

Video After The Jump

It happens to the best of them, but that still doesn't make it any less embarrassing.

Kanye West became the latest entertainer to take a tumble while performing in concert. Yeezy was performing "All Of The Lights" at the Koengen concert in Bergen, Norway when he tripped on something. The rapper bounced right back up though and finished the song like a pro.

Watch the clip of Kanye falling onstage at the 1:15 mark below.

QR CODE/MOBILE MARKETING

The music business has been and is undergoing crazy changes that is shaking up all the major and small players in the industry. The problem is not the evolution of a different way of manipulating and consuming media but the failure of the player to foresee and yield to these changes.

In studying entrepreneurship last semester, I came across the concept of "creative destruction" which for example had eliminated the elevator man and made extinct the typewriter. On the other hand, the same concept has improved the functionality of the cellular phones and mobile devices, which has become the "now" gadget of the 21st century and beyond. If these devices get smarter, they will start to walk.

Before I ramble off topic, I want to implore us not to be like the music industry and  ignore the mobile device revolution. Their enhanced functionality/usability has made these devices indispensable to us and their sheer convenience has made them more indispensable to our potential consumer, their new personal companion and 24/7 personal assistant, decision-maker and shopper.

As of today, in light of the confusion in the music industry and the advancement in communication technology, it may be wise to adopt the QR code/mobile marketing early. You don't have to be a sorcerer to  see the future as it is coded in black and white.

Bob Dylan said it right,"The times, they are a changing." We either embrace it or like the some in the music industry, face exinction, FOREVER.

First the Monique Show got cancelled, now Lopez Tonight? The last couple of weeks has been been tough for late night talk show hosts.

George Lopez's show ends tonight after less than two years on the air. Ratings slipped from 910,000 to 543,000 after the show was moved into the 10 pm slot to make room for Conan O'Brien. They dropped even further to 391,000 this month according to Fox News.

Lopez made light of the situation, joking that he would start doing crack now. He also slipped in a shot at his soon-to-be former employers at TBS saying he was let go because he is brown.

Check out the full monologue below.

Nicki Minaj continues to set records.

The Young Money artist's song "Super Bass" is the biggest single by a female rapper in nearly a decade according to Billboard.

The song, which has been sitting on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 14 weeks, moved up a spot from No. 4 to No. 3, becoming the highest-charting Hot 100 rap hit by a solo female rapper since Missy Eliot's "Work It" in 2002.

In addition to " Super Bass," Minaj has also made the top 10 as a featured artist on songs by Trey Songz's "Bottoms Up" (No. 6) and Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" (No. 3).

"Nicki isn't like any other female rapper," Cash Money co-founder/co-CEO Ronald "Slim" Williams told Billboard, "We knew she had the goods when Lil Wayne signed her. She's not a female rapper -- she's a pop star who happens to rap."

Gucci Mane has at least one huge celebrity fan who is supporting his latest project.

Back as far as June of 2010 Miley Cyrus said the Atlanta rapper is one of her favorites along with OJ Da Juiceman,

"I like Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman," she told MTV's Sway at the time. “I love it. I don’t know any of the songs. They all blend in. I can’t really break it up, but I like it."

The singer's appreciation for Mr. La Flare has only grown since then, because she told her 2 million twitter followers to go cop his new cd with Waka Flocka, 'Ferrari Boyz' yesterday.

As Kim Kardhashian's August 20 wedding date to NBA player Kris Humphries fast approaches it seems as though someone is having second thoughts, and they're not even invited to the wedding.

According to Life & Style Weekly, Kim's former boyfriend of nearly three years Reggie Bush, is begging the reality tv star to call off her wedding to Humphries and give him another chance.

"He's been sending text messages to Kim and leaving her voice mails, telling her she's making a mistake and that he's the one for her," an insider says of the Miami Dolphins running back. "In the past, Kim was friendly to Reggie but now she's stopped responding."

Bush reportedly uses a secret nickname when he sends texts to Kim.

"She used to love that nickname, but now that he's using it when she's about to get married to someone else, it's just annoying to her," the insider adds. "She was burned by the end of their relationship, and she's truly moved on."

Bush and Kardashian dated on and off from July 2007 until March 2010.
