UFC President Dana White has apparently changed his mind about women fighting in the organization. TMZ is reporting that Ronda Rousey will be leaving Strikeforce to automatically become the the champion in UFC's 135 pound champion.
White probably changed his mind because he could see the huge financial benefit to bringing Rousey into the fold.
Rousey certainly has the credentials. In her amateur career the 25-year old Judo black belt won a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary at age 17. In April 2006, at age 19 she won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, becoming the first U.S. athlete ever to win two Junior World medals.
Ronda followed that up by winning the silver medal at the 2007 World Judo Championships in the middleweight division and the bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games.
She competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China and brought home a bronze medal.
Since turning pro in March 2011 she is 6-0, winning all of her fights in the first round via arm bars. She won the Strikeforce bantamweight belt in March 2012 when she defeated Miesha Tateby breaking her arm in a grudge match.
Rousey's popularity has only increased since she appeared in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issueearlier this year. Showing that she has the good looks to go along with her ring talent. A combination which makes her a big box office draw.
Ronda Rousey
Since TMZ broke the news, Rousey has been non committal about fighting in the UFC.
"Seems totally cool," Rousey told ESPN. "I would like it to be that way. I haven't signed any bout agreements. I don't know exactly what's going on yet. I know just as much as everybody else knows right now."
Miesha Tate meanwhile has already Tweeted that she is looking forward to fighting in the UFC.
Miesha Tate
"So Stoked to be fighting for the @UFC it’s been a dream of mine for a long time! So happy it’s finally come true," wrote Tate.
Possible 2013 opponents for Rousey include Tate, Sara McMann and Cristiane Santos A.K.A. Cris Cyborg. A fight with Cyborg would be the most hyped match in the history on women's MMA.
Cyborg has been a wrecking machine in compiling a 10-1 professional record. She doesn't seem to have any weaknesses. However, on January 6, 2012, Santos tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. As a result she was suspended for a year and fined $2,500.
Rousey has called Cyborg out for being a cheater and said she would only fight her if she comes down in weight from 145 pounds to 135.
"As long as she makes 135, I don't care if she's injecting horse semen into her eyeballs but that’s the only way I feel it would be a fair fight," Rousey said on TSN Radio's The MMA Report with John Pollack. "She’s never had a fair fight in her life and I see how the prospect of that would scare the hell out of her and why she would insist at fighting heavier."
Cyborg has fired back in a recent interview by saying she would meet Rousey halfway and fight at 140 pounds. She points out that Rousey started at 145 pounds and is running from her. Cyborg said she would fight Rousey in a parking lot if necessary.
"I really want to punch her in the face," Cyborg said.
Meanwhile it looks like Strikeforce will be shutting down following it's January 2013 card, which will be shown on Showtime.
White has had a contentious relationship with Strikeforce ever since Zuffa purchased the organization in March 2011 for $40 million. White often refers to the company as "Strikefarce."
Dana White
Shutting down Strikeforce is a bad move by Zuffa in my opinion. Not only did the organization put on quality fights, but it helped Zuffa by developing fighters who may not have been ready to fight in the UFC yet.
The UFC simply has too many fighters under contract and not enough events to showcase them all. Strikeforce was an outlet for some of those fighters.
I guess we will have to see how this all plays out.

A Turlock, California woman has been fired from her job at Cold Stone Creamery after writing a racial slur about President Obama on her Facebook wall and hoping he will get assassinated.
After Obama won reelection this week, 22-year old Denise Helms went to her Facebook page to vent.
"And another 4 years of the (n*gger)," Helms wrote. "Maybe he will get assassinated this term..!!"
It wasn't long before word spread about what she had written and she soon found herself out of a job.
In an interview with Sacramento TV station Fox 40, Helms said she didn't what the fuss was all about.
“I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal,” Helms told FOX40. “The assassination part is kind of harsh. I’m not saying I’d go do that or anything like that, by any means, but if it was to happen I don’t think I’d care one bit.”
Helms said she isn't racist, but when she was asked is she considered Obama to be a n*gger, she said "sure."
Turlock Cold Stone Creamery store director Chris Kegle said he was shocked to read her racist slur and see her accompanying interview.
"We found her comments to be very disgusting, and they do not reflect our opinions here," Kegle said. "We never saw anything from her at work like those comments."
Kegle told the Modesto Bee that due to the many complaints he received about Helms and the offensive nature of what she wrote her firing was justified.
"We made the decision because of her comments, but also the community feedback," he said. "We are very into working with the community and doing community service. So when your community does not like you because of an employee, that's bad. We have a business to run."
The Secret Service is now investigating Helms.
Secret Service Agent Scott Gillingham from the Sacramento office said threats against the president are a felony under U.S. Code Section 871.
It reads: "Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."
Despite being a Mitt Romney supporter and her rant against Obama on Facebook, The Modesto Bee reports Helms isn't even registered to vote.
That fact isn't stopping her from complaining anyway.
"He has done absolutely nothing for this country," Helms explained of Obama. She also doesn't understand why the Secret Service is on her a$$.
"OK, but what did I do wrong? That's fine if they want to," she told Fox40. "But I don't understand what I did wrong."
The L.A. Lakers management quickly lost patience with coach Mike Brown and gave him his walking papers just five games into his second second season as coach.
"Mike just called saying he was relieved of his coaching duties," Mike's agent Warren Legarie wrote to USA TODAY Sports this morning.
According to USA Today, owner Jerry Buss still had to cut Brown an $11 million check after letting him go.
The Lakers gave Brown a guaranteed contract worth $18 million in the first three seasons when they hired him in 2011 as a replacement for retired coach Phil Jackson. The contract included a team option for a fourth season.
The Lakers made big splashes this off season by trading for Dwight Howard and acquiring point guard Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns. They were expected to start winning immediately, but the team stumbled out of the gate with a 1-4 record. The fact that Nash has missed the last three games with a non-displaced fracture in the head of his left fibula hasn't helped.
The L.A. Times reports that Brown's firing is the earliest of any coach in team history. Del Harris was fired after twelve games in 1999.
The Lakers were 41-25 in Brown's first season, losing to Oklahoma City in the second round of the playoffs.
The team will now conduct a national search to find Brown's replacement. Early candidates include Mike D'Antoni, Jerry Sloan, Nate McMillan and Phil Jackson.
