NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A female shooter wielding 2 “assault-style” rifles & a pistol killed 3 students & 3 adults at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday in what marks the latest in a series of mass shootings in a country growing increasingly unnerved by bloodshed in schools.
The suspect also died after being shot by police following the violence at The Covenant School, a Presbyterian school for about 200 students from preschool through sixth grade. Police said the shooter was a 28-year-old woman from Nashville.
Authorities were working to identify her & whether she had a connection to the school.
President Joe Biden was scheduled to address the Nashville shooting on Monday afternoon.
The tragedy unfolded over roughly 14 minutes. Police received the initial call about an active shooter at 10:13 a.m.
Officers began clearing the first story of the school when they heard gunshots coming from the second level, police spokesperson Don Aaron said during a news briefing.
2 officers from a five-member team opened fire in response, fatally shooting the suspect at 10:27 a.m., Aaron said. He said there were no police officers present or assigned to the school at the time of the shooting because it is a church-run school.
The Covenant School’s victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital & Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Other students walked to safety Monday, holding hands as they left their school surrounded by police cars, to a nearby church to be reunited with their parents.

An Illinois father is being held in jail on a $2 million bond over accusations that he physically assaulted & sexually abused his own daughter.
Ariel Carrasco is accused of physical abuse & child sex crimes.
Ariel Carrasco, a 46-year-old Lake Villa father, has been charged with 3 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, 2 counts of domestic battery, & 2 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Carrasco was arrested without incident on Wednesday.
Carrasco's child – who is under the age of 13 – allegedly told school officials the father was abusive physically & sexually. The Department of Children and Family Services was notified of the alleged abuse & helped arrange an "effort to develop a safety plan for the family."
The Lake Villa Police Department said in a statement, "Officers conducted interviews with the child & other family members.
The Lake Villa Police Department said that Carrasco made "very concerning statements" to investigators when questioned about the allegations. Authorities said that there was evidence to justify the charges, but did not elaborate.
The underage victim told authorities that the abuse took place between December 2022 and March 2023.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Carrasco to be held at Lake County Jail on a $2 million bond.
Carrasco has been barred from having any contact with his daughter or anyone under the age of 18.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 20.

CNN - Actor Jonathan Majors, who has recently starred in “Creed III” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” was arrested Saturday morning in an alleged domestic dispute.
Majors, 33, was taken into custody following a 911 call made from an apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
“The victim informed police she was assaulted,” the statement said. The 30-year-old woman had “minor injuries to her head & neck,” police said.
Majors faces charges of strangulation, assault & harassment.
A spokesperson for Majors denied any wrongdoing by the actor.
“He has done nothing wrong,” the spokesperson told CNN Saturday. “We look forward to clearing his name & clearing this up.”
Majors is no longer in police custody, according to the NYPD Saturday night.
In the wake of the allegations, the US Army announced it is pulling 2 recently released recruiting ads featuring Majors, saying in a statement it was “deeply concerned.”
“While Mr. Majors is innocent until proven guilty, prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete,” the statement from the Army Enterprise Marketing Office said.

Teresa Williams thought she had landed her dream job in Iron Mountain, Michigan, becoming the first female officer in the history of the rural town's police department.
But she was relentlessly harassed & assaulted during her 4½ years there and ultimately resigned, according to a federal lawsuit she filed last month against 3 Iron Mountain officers.
Within weeks of being hired in October 2017, she was forced to make out with her direct supervisor at a bar, according to the suit. The supervisor & Williams’ former patrol partner also bet on who could have sex with her first.
The lawsuit alleges sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, a hostile work environment & retaliation. Named as defendants are the department’s top 2 supervisors, Ed Mattson & Joseph Dumais. Garth Budek, Williams’ former patrol partner, is the third officer named as a defendant. Also named as defendants are the city & the police department.
Schulz and Williams said none of the 3 officers who are defendants have faced discipline or been investigated criminally.
Only weeks after Williams was hired, she was invited to a bar, the lawsuit says. She was excited about the opportunity to bond with her new colleagues.
However, at the bar, Dumais pressured her into doing a Fireball shot & making out with him as part of an initiation ritual, according to the suit.
Later on at the bar, Dumais asked for another shot with Williams, according to the suit. She repeatedly refused before she relented & was groped for the first time by a colleague.
“Dumais pressured Plaintiff into taking the second IMPD shot, however this time Dumais put his hand between Plaintiff’s legs & grabbed her genitals,” it says.

Marjorie Taylor Greene swept into the District of Columbia jail to check on conditions for the Jan. 6 defendants, with Republican lawmakers handshaking & high-fiving the prisoners, who chanted “Let’s Go Brandon!” — a coded vulgarity against President Joe Biden — as the group left.
A day earlier Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with the mother of slain rioter Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran who was shot & killed by police as she tried to climb through a broken window during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
And the House Republican leader recently gave Fox News’ Tucker Carlson exclusive access to a trove of Jan. 6 surveillance tapes despite the conservative commentator’s airing of conspiracy theories about the Capitol attack.
Taken together, the House Republicans can be seen as working steadily but intently to distort the facts of the deadly riot, which played out for the world to see when Donald Trump’s supporters laid siege to the Capitol, & in the process downplay the risk of domestic extremism in the U.S.
In actions & legislation, the Republicans are seeking to portray perpetrators of the Capitol riot as victims of zealous federal prosecutors, despite many being convicted of serious crimes. As Trump calls for the Jan. 6 defendants to be pardoned, some House Republicans are attempting to rebrand those who stormed the Capitol as “political prisoners.”
The result is alarming to those who recognize a dangerously Orwellian attempt to whitewash recent history.
“There’s no question Marjorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans are attempting to rewrite history,” said Heidi Beirich, the co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “They’re making light of what was a serious attack on our democracy.”
Nearly 1,000 people have been charged by the Justice Department in the attack on the Capitol — leaders of the extremist Oath Keepers convicted of seditious conspiracy. The 20 or so defendants being held at the jail, many in pretrial detention on serious federal charges, are among those who battled police at the Capitol, officials said, in what at times was a gruesome bloody scene of violence & mayhem.
The country has been here before — in the aftermath of the Civil War, when the Lost Cause movement sought to reframe the battle over ending slavery in the U.S. as one of states’ rights, & again in the years following the Civil Rights movement as critics of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. questioned his transformative legacy.
In the House under Republican control this year, the new leadership openly questions what happened on Jan. 6 as well as how the federal government is investigating and prosecuting extremists. Outside groups are raising money and rallying to the aid of Jan. 6 defendants.
