SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California woman whose disappearance and mysterious reappearance set off a frantic three-week search more than five years ago was arrested Thursday on charges of lying to federal agents about being kidnapped & defrauding the state’s victim compensation board of $30,000.
Sherri Papini, 39, of Redding, was found on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 after weeks of searching in California & several nearby states, with bindings on her body & injuries including a swollen nose & a “brand” on her right shoulder.
She had been reported missing Nov. 2. She told authorities at the time that she had been kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, even providing descriptions to an FBI sketch artist along with extensive details of her purported abduction.
In reality, authorities said, she was staying with a former boyfriend nearly 600 miles away from her home in Orange County, in Southern California, and hurt herself to back up her false statements.
Papini does not yet have an attorney because she was just arrested, Talbert’s office said. Her first court appearance has not yet been set.
She was still lying about the kidnapping in August 2020 when she was interviewed by a federal agent & a Shasta County sheriff’s detective, the charges allege. They showed her evidence indicating she had not been abducted & warned her that it was a crime to lie to a federal agent.
But she still made false statements, the charges allege.
She also was reimbursed more than $30,000 by the California Victim’s Compensation Board based on the false story. They included money for visits to her therapist for “treatment for anxiety & PTSD” & for the ambulance ride to the hospital after she surfaced near Sacramento.
She faces a mail fraud charge related to the reimbursement requests that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, while lying to a federal officer has a maximum five-year sentence.
Naya Rivera’s family has reached a settlement with Ventura County in a wrongful death lawsuit filed following her 2020 drowning in a Southern California lake.
The Glee star, who was 33 at the time of her death, drowned while boating on Lake Piru in July 2020. Ryan Dorsey in November 2020 filed a wrongful death and emotional distress lawsuit against the county on behalf of their then-4-year-old son, Josey, who was on the water with her that day. The suit claimed the county, United Water Conservation District and Parks and Recreation Management failed to warn visitors of the dangers of the lake and provide the requisite safety equipment.
Josey was found alone in the boat after it was not returned to the rental company on time and employees went out on the water in search of it. Rivera was reported missing and declared dead several days later.
Amjad M. Khan Brown of Neri Smith & Khan, an attorney for Rivera’s estate and her son, on Tuesday confirmed the parties have reached a global settlement, which is set for an approval hearing on March 16.
“Through this settlement, Josey will receive just compensation for having to endure the drowning of his beloved mother at Lake Piru,” said Khan in a statement to THR. “Though the tragic loss of Josey’s mother can never truly be overcome, we are very pleased that the monetary settlement will significantly assist Josey with his life beyond this tragedy.”
DETROIT (ClickOnDetroit) – Detroit police have arrested 2 juveniles in connection with a triple-fatal shooting on Sunday on the city’s west side, which included the shooting death of a 5-year-old boy.
Police said they received tips & were able to identify the suspects. Police obtained search warrants & the 2 suspects were taken into custody without incident. The suspects have not been identified.
Shalesa Floyd said her grandson, Caleb Harris, was a light. He should be looking forward to his sixth birthday right now & his grandmother can’t comprehend how or why someone would hurt him.
“For you to shoot a 5-year-old in the face? Twice? You could have let him go so he could remain & live,” Floyd said.
Detroit police Chief James White said a man & a woman in their 20s & 30s were also killed in the shooting. The woman was the child’s mother.
White said family members hadn’t heard from the victims in weeks & they found the back door had been kicked in.
“They continued to check the house for additional victims & unfortunately they did find a third victim, a child, in a room deceased,” White said.
The child had been shot multiple times, according to the chief.
“To do this -- it’s like a monster would do this,” Floyd said.

Later, the police department’s narcotics division searched Robinson’s properties. They discovered drugs worth about $120,810, according to Thibodaux police.

Kodak Black, the rapper whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was among 3 people shot and injured early Saturday outside a bar in West Hollywood, California, four law enforcement sources familiar with investigation told NBC News.
The 24-year-old Florida rapper and two other victims, 19 and 60 years old, were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. One additional victim was hurt in the scuffle.
It not immediately clear what sparked the fight outside the club in the 400 block of N. La Cienega Boulevard. But an LAPD spokesman said the victims were shot when they emerged from the club during the fight.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
According to footage of the shooting obtained by TMZ, Kodak Black was leaving a party at the Nice Guy bar with an entourage and friend and rapper Gunna. In the footage, they paused to pose for photos with fans.
Surrounded by over a dozen paparazzi, a confused fistfight amongst a group of men standing around a red Ferrari in the street spills back onto the sidewalk and is then interrupted by 10 gunshots that send the crowd running for their lives.
Kapri was originally born Dieuson Octave and, the AP reported, had by age 21 amassed an extensive rap sheet. Kapri was sentenced to prison in 2019 for weapons possession and was pardoned in 2021 by former president Donald J. Trump.

Two police detectives in Connecticut’s largest city have been suspended amid investigations into allegations of insensitivity in their handling of separate cases in which Black women were found dead in their apartments.
In each of the two cases in Bridgeport, the families said police did not notify them of the deaths in a timely manner.
The city’s Democratic mayor, Joe Ganim, released a video statement Sunday saying he directed the Bridgeport Police Department’s deputy chief to place the officers on administrative leave. Ganim said both are subjects of an internal investigation, while a supervisory officer involved in the cases has retired.
Ganim apologized to the families of Lauren Smith-Fields, 23, and Brenda Lee Rawls, 53, calling it an “unacceptable failure” if police department policies involving the death of a family member were not followed.
“I am extremely disappointed with the leadership of the Bridgeport Police Department and found the actions taken up until this point with regards to these two cases unacceptable,” Ganim said in his statement. “I want to be clear to members of the public and the department that insensitivity, disrespect in action, or deviation from policy will not be tolerated by me or others in this administration.”
Both cases remain under investigation and have been assigned to other officers, he said.
The family of Smith-Fields has complained that authorities were not giving the investigation enough attention because she was African American.
Smith-Fields, a college student, was found dead after a man she had met recently online called police Dec. 12 to say he awoke to find her unresponsive. The medical examiner’s office said Smith-Fields died from the combined effects of alcohol, fentanyl and antihistamines.
Smith-Field’s family said police never notified them of her death, which they learned about more than a day later through a note left on her apartment door by her landlord. A detective eventually asked them to stop calling, they said.
The family of Rawls, who was also found dead Dec. 12 in her Bridgeport apartment after a man she was with called police to say he had awoken to find her unresponsive, told News 12 Connecticut they were never notified of the woman’s death and were told nobody could help them when they went to the police department seeking answers about the case.
A spokesperson for the Bridgeport Police Department said Monday that there were no physical signs of trauma or foul play that played a role in Rawls’ “untimely passing” and that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ultimately determine her cause of death. The medical examiner’s office said the case is “pending further studies.”
Darnell Crosland, an attorney for Smith-Fields’ family, said on Twitter that Ganim’s statement was a step in the right direction.
“The city is liable for the behavior of its police department and its officers. I am pleased that the mayor has accepted that liability publicly and has apologized to this family for the suffering they have endured,” he wrote.
Ganim said the two officers will be placed on administrative leave until the internal investigation has been completed. A message was left seeking comment with a representative of the Bridgeport Police Union.

Two south Texas teen brothers have been arrested for beating their stepfather to death after he allegedly sexually abused their half-sister.
Alejandro & Christian Trevino, along with friend Juan Eduardo Melendez, all 18, are accused of beating Gabriel Quintanilla, 42, & leaving him to die in a field in McAllen where his body was discovered by a farmer.
Multiple media reports say Quintanilla's body was found with apparent severe blunt force trauma to his head. McAllen Police Department handed the investigation over to the Pharr Police Department.
Pharr Police Chief Andy Harvey Jr. told Fox News the department is working up an updated press release.
Pharr police said the child made an outcry at an RV park. Police later revealed that the child is Quintanilla’s 9-year-old daughter. He was the stepfather of Alejandro & Christian, who have different mothers & are both half-siblings of the girl.
"When brothers (Alejandro) & Christian Trevino found out, they became enraged & confronted Gabriel Quintanilla at the residence. A physical fight ensued between the 3 & the victim Quintanilla left the location on foot."
Christian Trevino chased Quintanilla to a nearby apartment complex, where a 2nd assault occurred involving Alejandro & the driver of a red Dodge Charger, identified as Melendez.
The 3 suspects then left the location, changed vehicles & drove back, where they found Quintanilla walking alone & injured.
Quintanilla was allegedly assaulted a 3rd time, before being placed in the bed of a truck & dumped in the field. Police believe Quintanilla might have still been alive when the teens allegedly dumped his body.
Quintanilla had a warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a child, police previously told MyRGV News.
Online Hidalgo County records show Melendez is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon & possession of marijuana.
Christian Trevino is charged with aggravated assault, murder & engaging in organized criminal activity. Alejandro Trevino is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity & aggravated assault.

Four people were killed & one person was wounded early Sunday after more than 40 rounds of ammunition were fired in an “ambush” shooting at a birthday house party in Inglewood. The city’s mayor called the shooting the worst act of violence in the city in years.
Firefighters & paramedics were dispatched at 1:43 a.m. to a house in the 1300 block of Park Avenue. The house was an Airbnb short-term rental, one of the tenants said. Sources said those participating in the crime were gang-related, but officials said they didn’t know a motive for the shooting & were looking for suspects.
Two of the victims who were killed, Breahna Stines & Marneysha Hamilton, were sisters. Their mother, who asked to be identified only by her first name, Tiffney, said family had gathered Saturday at the home where the shooting took place to celebrate Stines’ 20th birthday, which was Sunday. Hamilton was 25.
“They both were outgoing, beautiful girls,” the mother said, sitting beside a display of candles & two large photographs of her daughters that had been placed on the sidewalk at the crime scene. “They both had futures ahead of them & to have it taken away,” their mother said.
