FLINT, Mich. -- Investigators say a knife-wielding serial killer has been attacking men on Flint-area streets since May, killing five people and wounding eight others in a vicious spate of violence that may be motivated by racial hatred.

Survivors have described their assailant as a muscular, young white man, and all but one of the 13 victims was black, Flint Police Lt. T.P. Johnson told The Associated Press Friday. Flint is a predominantly black city, and investigators are unsure if the suspect was targeting blacks or whether the victims were chosen at random.

The victims were all outside alone at night. Survivors have said the attacker approached them under the pretense of needing directions or help with a broken down vehicle.

"He then pulls a knife and attacks them without saying anything more," Johnson said.

"A knife is a very personal weapon. To stab somebody repeatedly, there has to be some rage going on," he said.

Detectives have been investigating the attacks since they started, but a pattern only became apparent on Tuesday, a day after 49-year-old Arnold Minor was found slain along a Flint street,

Johnson said. That led to the announcement that a serial killer might be on the prowl in the working class city ravaged by economic turmoil, budget problems and police layoffs.

Michigan State Police are leading a task force investigating the attacks. Ten have been in Flint, about 50 miles northwest of Detroit. Three others were in nearby communities.

A number of the incidents have occurred around Grand Traverse Street in Flint, but police are asking all of Genesee County to be vigilant.

On July 30, the body of 60-year-old Frank Kellybrew was found not far from the Flint Township motel he had called home for about 10 months.

The manager of Hometown Inn said Kellybrew had walked to the other side of Interstate 75 to buy some things from a gas station. The next morning his body was found by sanitation workers corralling trash barrels near a restaurant.

Kellybrew didn't stand out any more than the other tenants at the motel, which rents quite a few rooms on a month-to-month basis, manager John Henson said Friday.

He liked watching television in the motel lobby or having a cup or two of coffee.

"He was a nice guy; kept to himself," Henson said. "If he didn't know you, he would just avoid you and have nothing to do with you."

In his short time at the inn, Kellybrew enjoyed walking over at night, after business hours, to the restaurant near the freeway.

"He would sit on the bench at night," Henson said. "He'd just go over there, and sit and relax. It's pretty quiet over here at night when everything closes."

Police have hesitated to describe this stabbing spree as a chain of hate crimes. A criminal justice professor at Saginaw Valley State University told TV5 that won't be known until the suspect is caught.

"Until you put everything together, there could be some more assaults out there [and] that things will just continue to come into play,” said SVSU criminal justice department professor Joseph Jaska. “So it may not necessarily be something against African Americans, but at the same time, I think the public in general just needs to be cautious."

Lil Wayne is on lockdown inside Rikers Island jail . but he's doing a good job of keeping his name in the streets.

He called in to Hot 97 and chopped it up with DJ Funkmaster Flex for a few minutes the other day.

Weezy let his fans know if they would like to write him, just send letters to his website, WeezyThanxYou.com and he'll try to write back.

Wayne says when he gets out of prison in November, the first people he wants to record with are Andre 3000 and Tech N9ne.

Flex asked him if he felt like Eminem was sending subliminal shots at him on "Not Afraid".

"Em is Em and he's back in a major way. I really don't have no personal feelings on that song. But as far as Eminem, the dude, he's actually a great dude. He's been keeping up with me while I been up in here and I really appreciate his support," Wayne said.

Weezy goes on to talk about his artists, Drake and Nicki Minaj, keeping up with his family daily via phone calls and what he plans on doing differently when he gets out of jail.

"The thief's theme, play me at night, they won't act right/The fiend of hip-hop has got me stuck like a crack pipe/The mind activation, react like I'm facin/ time like 'Pappy' Mason with pens I'm embracin" --Nas "The World Is Yours"

Whatever you think about Nas's movements away from the vocal booth, there is no denying he has spit some of the most memorable lines in hip hop history.

From his classic debut album 'Illmatic' to his verbal slaughtering of Jay-Z during their beef, which culminated when Nas delivered the scathing diss "Ether". The man born, Nasir Jones is definitely an all time great.

The UK's Tim Westwood recently caught up with Nas and they addressed all issues from his personal divorce from Kelis to his upcoming solo album.

Nas started things off by talking about how he and Damian Marley came together for their 'Distant Relatives' album.

"I did "World Desire" with Damian on his last album. And I like how he get down. We'd been talking about doing more work. We were supposed to something on the 'Hip Hop Is Dead' album and it never materialized. So we'd been talking back and forth and we just planned to do a EP, but we just kept going and did a album."

It's been three years since Nas dropped a solo album. There was controversy surrounding his last project because Nas put his beef with Jay-Z to bed and essentially went to work for him by putting the album out on Def Jam. At that time Jay-Z was the President of the label.

Some of Nas' longtime fans felt like the rapper sold himself short by doing that.

There was also the drama surrounding the album's title. Nas originally planned to call the album 'N*gger'. He and then wife Kelis famously showed up at the 2008 Grammys with the word 'N*gger' emblazoned on their shirt and jacket. A very bad PR move in retrospect, but so it it has gone for Nas. It's usually hit or miss for the mc. The album ended up coming out untitled.

He's presently working on his next solo album.

"I'm definitely looking at my solo project, it's one of the most important records of my life," he tells Tim. "It's gonna be magice, I feel a magic thing brewing. I keep calling it a magic moment...that's what it's gon' be. I feel it, the stuff I'm writing down, the directions that I'm thinking about going into. It doesn't even matter what producers...if it's Swizz Beatz, if it's [DJ] Premier, if it's Alchemist, Dr Dre, Kanye West. All of these guys are guys that I love and guys that I been talking to about getting on the project. Actually, Kanye hit me up and said I wanna produce the album and RZA. I gotta deliver right now"

WATERBURY, Conn. -- The former pastor of a Waterbury church has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the theft of church money.

Kevin Gray, 64, turned himself in to Waterbury police Tuesday morning after learning of a warrant for his arrest on larceny charges.

Gray is accused of stealing money from Sacred Heart Church over the course of seven years. Police said Gray used the money to pay for personal expenses, including hotels, restaurants, clothing and male escorts. He is accused of taking $1.3 million over the seven years.

Police said Gray spent $200,000 on various Manhattan restaurants, $100,000 on hotels, $80,000 on clothing and designer suits and $45,000 on rent and tuition for two men.

Police said when they confronted Gray, he told them he was unhappy with his church assignments and said, "He began taking money because he felt the church owed it to him."

Gray was suspended last month by the Archdiocese of Hartford from all of his priestly duties and can no longer function as a priest in Connecticut or anywhere in the country, according to officials.

Officials said Gray was the priest at Sacred Heart from Jan. 1, 2003, through April 15, 2010, when he was placed on an indefinite leave of absence for medical reasons.

Now, the archdiocese said it is looking into whether claims Gray made about being sick were even true. When the archdiocese asked for records that were missing over those years, Gray said he fell behind because he was sick.

The archdiocese went to police last month and asked for an investigation to be launched, which culminated in Gray's arrest.

Lindsay Lohan is going to jail for 90 days.

A Beverly Hills judge found Lohan violated probation on two DUI cases and sent the "Mean Girls" star away after a day-long hearing that left the actress in tears.

"She comes and goes as she pleases," said irate Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel. "There's been a history of that. No excuses."

Lohan was ordered to surrender on the morning of July 20.

The stiff sentence came after a weepy Lohan - breaking down at times - made an emotional pitch to stay out of jail.

"I'm not taking this as a joke," Lohan said through tears. "It's my life, it's my career."

When Revel handed down the sentence - three times what prosecutors sought on the probation violation - Lohan wept on her lawyer's shoulder.

Lohan missed seven scheduled alcohol education sessions between December 2009 and Monday, according to witness Cheryl Marshall, co-owner of the Right On facility.

Lohan's excuses for skipping her sessions ran the gamut from no flights at a North Carolina airport to promoting a clothing line to the death of her uncle (although she did not attend his funeral).

She had previously missed eight sessions, leading to a pointed letter sent to Lohan's lawyer last August.

"Her excuses are endless and disrespectful," wrote John Marshall, who runs Right On with his daughter.

Revel had ordered Lohan to attend weekly alcohol education classes - or face possible jail time for violating her probation.

Lohan, 24, wore a black top, black pants and sunglasses when she arrived at court early for a hearing that could end up with her in jail.

Revel - who ordered Lohan to wear a SCRAM bracelet in May - said she would not throw the onetime Disney star behind bars because of a positive reading for alcohol.

Lohan tested negative for booze hours after the June 7 reading of .03 on the bracelet - less than two drinks.

Prosecutor Danette Meyers had argued that the reading was a probation violation, and encouraged the judge to take a hard line against Lohan.

"She clearly violated your order," Meyers argued before the judge spared Lohan. "It makes no sense to have it there if you're not going to abide by it, and there's no sanction."

Lohan was nearly thrown in jail two months ago when she blew off a Los Angeles court appearance and was spotted hanging out aboard a yacht in the French Riviera.

Revel was so infuriated that she instead revoked LiLo's probation and ordered the former child star to post $100,000 bail to avoid 180 days behind bars.

She also ordered the hard-partying starlet to wear the alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet despite Lohan's concerns that it could affect her career.

The case stems from a pair of 2007 DUI arrests, including one where Lohan drunkenly crashed her car into a Beverly Hills tree.

She wound up spending 84 minutes in jail, and was placed on probation - which Revel extended for a year last October because of Lohan's failure to comply.

Kourtney said one of the Celtic's players whose name she couldn't remember tried to intimidate the pair by "mad dogging" them during one of the games, but it didn't work.

Joran van der Sloot, 22, is being held in Peru, where authorities say he has confessed to the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. Van der Sloot was, of course, the chief suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of Natalee Holloway in Aruba. In that case, there was insufficient evidence to charge him with a crime, and he was released.

Van der Sloot reportedly explained to Peruvian authorities that he killed Flores when she “intruded” into his personal life by looking at his notebook computer and learning he was involved in Holloway's disappearance.

Indeed, van der Sloot seems to be a killer whose violence erupts from him, rather than the kind of serial killer who methodically and secretively stalks victims and carefully disposes of their remains. He was, after all, seen walking into his hotel room with Flores on a hotel video surveillance camera, and the two had been seen together before the alleged crime. He was known to have spent time with Holloway, as well. Those facts don’t support the kind of methodical stalking of victims that organized serial killers are known for.

Organized serial killers plan their crimes for weeks, months or years. They typically are aware of the internal need to kill. They are known to restrain their victims and bring murder weapons with them to the scenes of their crimes, keeping the weapons with them when they disappear.

Disorganized serial killers (and van der Sloot is apparently one of them) happen upon their victims at random and may be “provoked” to kill not just for the perverse joy of it, but by overwhelming feelings of rage or humiliation.

They often leave murder weapons at the scenes of their crimes and do little to dispose of the physical evidence associated with their crimes. What unites organized and disorganized serial killers, I believe, is a perverse connection with death. Ending life reaches them at a deep level that is connected to their own early and unexplored psychological traumas. The “projection” of their own powerlessness and helplessness and, ultimately, lifelessness is the terrible force that overtakes them—again and again. Alcohol and drugs can contribute to dissolving their defenses and rendering them more likely to be homicidal.

Serial killers — whether organized or disorganized — are always made, never born. Having interviewed dozens of killers myself, I can tell you that it turns out that evil never appears “out of the womb.”

Joran van der Sloot traveled the world in the five years since he was held in Aruba for the murder of Natalee Holloway. One or more unexplained murders anywhere he visited may involve him. But something also has to have killed off van der Sloot’s capacity to contain his rage and to empathize with the suffering of others. And the scene of that crime, stored deep inside the mind of van der Sloot himself, is not yet known.

It may well be that every episode of violence in Joran van der Sloot’s life has seemed to him as though it would be the last one—beginning with the emotional or physical violence that turned him into a predator.--- Dr Keith Ablow
