Illinois and New York state joined California on Friday in ordering all residents to stay in their homes unless they have vital reasons to go out, restricting the movement of more than 70 million Americans in the most sweeping measures undertaken yet in the U.S. to contain the coronavirus.
The states’ governors acted in a bid to fend off the kind of onslaught that has caused the health system in southern Europe to buckle. The lockdowns encompass the three biggest cities in America — New York, Los Angeles and Chicago — as well as No. 8 San Diego and No. 14 San Francisco.
“No, this is not life as usual,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as the death toll in the U.S. topped 200, with at least 35 in his state. “Accept it and realize it and deal with it.”
Cuomo said that starting Sunday, all workers in nonessential businesses must stay home as much as possible, and gatherings of any size will be banned in the state of over 19 million people. California likewise all but confined its 40 million residents on Friday, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced a similar order set to take effect on Saturday for the state’s 12.6 million people. The governor of Connecticut, New York’s neighboring state, said he also was poised to issue a comparable directive.
Exceptions were made for essential jobs and errands, such as buying groceries and medicine, as well as for exercise.
The lockdowns sent another shudder through the markets, where many fear a recession is a near certainty. Stocks tumbled on Wall Street, closing out their worst week since the 2008 financial crisis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 900 points, ending the week with a 17% loss.
The increasingly drastic measures in the U.S. came as gasping patients filled the wards of hospitals in Spain and Italy, and the global death toll surpassed 11,000, with the virus gaining footholds in new corners of the world. Over a quarter-million people worldwide have been infected, according to a count kept by Johns Hopkins University, though close to 90,000 of them have recovered.

USA Track & Field has joined USA Swimming in requesting that the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee push for the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In a letter dated Friday, USATF chief executive officer Max Siegel acknowledged "the ramifications of this request" and the potential challenges of rescheduling the Games. But he wrote that the alternative, of trudging ahead, "would not be in the best interest of our athletes."
"We acknowledge that there are no perfect answers, and that this is a very complex and difficult decision," Siegel wrote in the letter. "But this position at least provides our athletes with the comfort of knowing that they will have adequate time to properly prepare themselves physically, mentally and emotionally to be able to participate in a safe and successful Olympic Games, and that they can shift their focus toward taking care of themselves and their families.
"We urge the USOPC, as a leader within the Olympic Movement, to use its voice and speak up for the athletes."
USATF's letter echoes a similar sentiment made by USA Swimming on Friday afternoon. Together, the governing bodies represent arguably two of the most popular Olympic sports in the United States — and a significant portion of the nation's Olympic delegation. Of the 558 U.S. athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 176 competed in either swimming or track and field.
USA Gymnastics, the third major governing bohas sent a letter to its Olympic hopefuls, asking for their thoughts on the fate on the Tokyo Games. The responses, which will be anonymous, are due Monday, and CEO and president Li Li Leung said they will dictate USAG’s message to the USOPC.
"We want to ensure that their voice comes through in our advocacy, and particularly on this important topic," Leung said.
There is mounting pressure on Olympic leaders to postpone the Tokyo Games due to the coronavirus outbreak — and mounting pressure now on the USOPC to advocate a stance to that effect. USOPC chief executive officer Sarah Hirshland and board chair Susanne Lyons have, to this point, preached patience, explaining on a conference call earlier Friday that the coronavirus situation could still change over the next four months.

Jadakiss recalls 50 eventually came to the studio and talked things out with him and Styles P, and they've been good ever since. He even thinks the beef was blown up to be more serious than it was since they were both big deals at the time. New York (CNN Business)In an extraordinary exchange on Friday, President Donald Trump viciously attacked an NBC News reporter who asked what his message would be to Americans who are frightened by the coronavirus pandemic that is spreading across the country.
The exchange, which occurred at the White House's daily coronavirus task force briefing, began when NBC News reporter Peter Alexander asked Trump whether he was giving Americans "false hope" by touting unproven coronavirus drugs.
Toward the end of the exchange, Alexander cited the latest pandemic statistics showing thousands of Americans are now infected and millions are scared.
Alexander asked, "What do you say to Americans who are scared?"
Trump, shaking his head, ripped into Alexander in response.
"I say that you are a terrible reporter," Trump replied. "That's what I say."
The President proceeded to launch into an extended rant against Alexander, saying he asked a "nasty question" and assailing NBC and its parent company, Comcast.
"You're doing sensationalism," Trump charged. "And the same with NBC and Comcast. I don't call it Comcast. I call it 'Con-Cast.'"
"Let me just tell you something," Trump added. "That's really bad reporting. And you ought to get back to reporting instead of sensationalism."
