HICKMAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WSMV) - A woman accused of smuggling drugs into a Tennessee Department of Correction facility in February now finds herself behind bars after a fatal overdose of an inmate.

Rachel Dollard was charged with second-degree murder this week after authorities said she was seen passing drugs to inmate Joshua Brown as the two kissed during a visitation at the Turney Center Industrial Complex prison in Only, Tennessee, a community in Hickman County.

Brown swallowed a balloon pellet containing half an ounce of methamphetamine, according to Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) officials. He later died at a local hospital.

“This incident points to the real dangers of introducing contraband into prisons and the consequences that follow,” said David Imhof, Director of TDOC’s Office of Investigations and Conduct, in a media release. “Our agency will pursue prosecution against any individual who threatens the safety and security of our staff, the men and women in our custody, and our facilities.”

Dollard was taken into custody this past weekend by TDOC special agents and the Dickson County Sheriff’s Department on a warrant from a sealed indictment in Hickman County.

Dollard is being held in the Hickman County jail for murder and smuggling contraband into a penal facility.

Brown was serving an 11-year sentence on drug related charges, authorities said. His sentence was set to expire in 2029.

A family in New Zealand bought a suitcase from a storage facility auction – only to take it home & find human remains inside. Police in Manurewa, South Aukland, are now investigating the incident as a homicide.

The police began investigating the incident, first reported by BBC News, at the home on Aug. 11, Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua, counties manukau district crime manager.

Several police department staff members worked at the home overnight, including the department's Specialist Search Group, Vaaelua said in the release.

Police believe the homeowners discovered the remains after they brought the previously unowned property to their house & they are not believed to be involved in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing & the homeowners are assisting. There will be increased police presence in the area over the next few days & a postmortem examination is underway to try & identify the deceased & figure out the circumstance behind the remains, which is expected to take a few days.

Once the identity is discovered, police will contact the next of kin, which "might take some time," Vaaelua said.

There is widespread public interest in the case and police say there is no immediate risk to the public, police said. They will continue to provide updates.

On Monday, a police spokesperson put out a new statement, obtained by CBS News, saying the department appreciates "there is a large public interest," but that "there are still a number of enquiries to be carried out before Police can comment further."

The department was still awaiting the identification results.

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- Police say the man that was punched by a Wendy’s employee in Prescott Valley in late July has died from his injuries. On Monday evening, Prescott Valley police confirmed the 67-year-old man died nearly three weeks after the initial incident. Officers say the Wendy’s employee, 35-year-old Antoine Kendrick, now faces second-degree murder charges. The customer’s name has not been released.

On July 26, Kendrick was at the register taking the man’s order. However, police say the man complained about his order, and that’s when things turned violent. Surveillance video shows the man hunched over, licking his Frosty when Kendrick comes out from behind the counter. Kendrick comes up next to the unsuspecting man and immediately throws a punch, hitting the customer in the head, police said. The man fell and hit his head on the floor. Officers say he was knocked unconscious and flown to a Valley hospital. Since then, the man was in critical condition before his death.

NEW YORK (AP) — A once-prominent neurologist convicted last month of sexually abusing patients killed himself Monday at a New York City jail.

Dr. Ricardo Cruciani, 68, was found unresponsive in a shower area at the Eric M. Taylor Center, a jail at the notorious Rikers Island complex..

Cruciani’s lawyer, Frederick Sosinsky, confirmed that his client had died.

Prosecutors said Cruciani groomed vulnerable patients by overprescribing painkillers, sometimes to treat serious injuries from car wrecks & other accidents.

Six women testified the sexual abuse often occurred behind closed doors during appointments in 2013 at a Manhattan medical center, where the doctor would expose himself & demand sex.

“I take comfort knowing he now faces another judge,” said Terrie Phoenix, who testified against Cruciani at trial.

He was also scheduled to go on trial next January on federal charges accusing him of abusing multiple patients over 15 years at his offices in New York City, Philadelphia & Hopewell, New Jersey.

Cruciani denied abusing women. In court, his lawyer questioned the credibility of his accusers.

Cruciani died while awaiting sentencing next month in a New York state case in which he was convicted of 12 counts, including predatory sexual assault, rape & sex abuse & acquitted on 2 other counts. He faced up to life in prison.

A Texas Child Protective Services employee lost her job after allegedly telling a 14-year-old girl to become a prostitute.

Keisha Bazley, a Texas mother of 9 who turned to CPS to help with her 14-year-old daughter, told FOX 26 Houston that her child was running away & causing trouble at school, prompting her to call in family services.

"My daughter told me that the worker had been telling her she should do these things, so she said she decided to video her," Bazley said.

CPS is housing the girl at a hotel, just like dozens of other foster kids in Harris County.

The video allegedly shows an exchange between the teen & a CPS worker who reportedly tells the girl to be a prostitute.

"And giving her an incentive to do so & almost a threat of not having her needs being met, if she didn't do what this woman very explicitly told her to do," family law attorney Mike Schneider said.

In a statement, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services spokeswoman Melissa Lanford, said, "DFPS is aware of the video & has taken action. The person in the video – who was employed as CPS support staff - was dismissed from her position August 10. The safety & appropriateness with which children in care must be treated is our paramount concern. Nothing less will be tolerated."

CHICAGO (AP) — Jury selection got underway Monday at R. Kelly’s federal trial in his hometown of Chicago, where the R&B singer faces charges that he rigged his 2008 state child pornography trial by threatening & paying off a girl with whom he allegedly filmed himself having sex when he was around 30 &  she was no older than 14.

Jurors acquitted Kelly on all charges in that 2008 trial, some explaining later that they felt they had no choice because the girl did not testify. The woman, now in her 30s & referred to in filings only as “Minor 1,” will be the government’s star witness in the federal trial.

Kelly, 55, was already sentenced by a New York federal judge to a 30-year prison term for a 2021 conviction on charges he used his fame to sexually abuse other young fans.

Before at least 2 dozen potential jurors were brought in, the judge said he hoped to select 12 jurors and 6 alternates Monday & Tuesday from a pool of 125. Once a jury is chosen, the panel will hear opening statements from prosecutors 7 the defense before the first witness is called.

Kelly, faces multiple charges at the federal trial. They include 4 counts of enticement of minors for sex — one each for 4 other accusers. They, too, are slated to testify.

Before potential jurors were brought in, his attorney Jennifer Bonjean asked the judge to exclude anyone who watched the documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” that revisited old allegations against Kelly and spotlighted new ones.

The judge denied that motion but said the jurors would be questioned about the program.

Convictions in Chicago could add decades to Kelly’s New York sentence, which he is appealing. With the New York sentence alone, Kelly will be around 80 before qualifying for early release.

AP) — Lawyers for American basketball star Brittney Griner have filed an appeal of her 9-year Russian prison sentence for drug possessiony, amid talks between the U.S. & Russia that could lead to a high-profile prisoner swap.

Griner, an 8-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury & 2-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

The 9-year sentence was close to the maximum of 10 years.

Reflecting the growing pressure on the Biden administration to do more to bring Griner home, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken took the unusual step of revealing publicly in July that Washington had made a “substantial proposal” to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

The Associated Press & other news organizations have reported that Washington has offered to free Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. & once earned the nickname the “Merchant of Death.”

On Sunday, a senior Russian diplomat said talks about an exchange have been conducted.

“This quite sensitive issue of the swap of convicted Russian & U.S. citizens is being discussed through the channels defined by our presidents,” Alexander Darchiev, head of the Foreign Ministry’s North America department, told state news agency Tass. “These individuals are, indeed, being discussed. The Russian side has long been seeking the release of Viktor Bout.”
