LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A suburban Atlanta police officer has been charged with concealing the death of a teenage girl whose body was found 6 months after she went missing.

Gwinnett County police arrested Miles Bryant, 22, on Monday, charging him with 1 count of concealing the death of & 1 count of false report of a crime.

In a warrant application, police said Bryant dumped Susana Morales’ naked body in the woods near Dacula after the girl disappeared in July. The skeletal remains of the 16-year-old were found last week & identified based on DNA & dental records. Medical examiners are still trying to determine how she died.

The warrant says Bryant lives near Morales’ last known location. It says police suspect Bryant of rape, murder & other offenses, although the former officer has not yet been charged with those crimes.

In the warrant, police said Bryant falsely filed a police report claiming his gun was stolen after his car was broken into. That accounts for the charge of a false report of a crime.

Bryant had no prior relationship with the 16-year-old, warrants state.

Bryant remained in jail Tuesday after a judge denied him bail. The judge cited investigators’ belief that he is a danger to the community.

Bryant was until Monday a Doraville police officer. The city fired him after he was charged.

Morales went missing on the evening of July 26 when she was walking home from a friend’s house. Detectives have said they believe Morales got into a vehicle. Her body was found more than 20 miles from where she went missing.

The Marshals are looking for 28-year-old Katie Montez. She was originally in federal prison for having a gun during a drug crime and was supposed to serve five years. However, she was released early and needs to serve the rest of her sentence.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The gunman who killed 3 students & wounded 5 at Michigan State University was a 43-year-old with a previous gun violation who fatally shot himself after an hourslong manhunt that ended in a confrontation with police miles from campus, officials said Tuesday.

Investigators still were sorting out why Anthony McRae fired inside an academic building & the student union shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday. 

“We have absolutely no idea what the motive was,” said Chris Rozman, deputy chief of campus police, adding that McRae, was not a student or Michigan State employee.

The dead & injured in the gunfire at Berkey Hall & the MSU Union, a popular place to eat & study, all were students, Rozman said. 5 remained in critical condition at Sparrow Hospital.

Michigan State has about 50,000 students, including 19,000 who live on the suburban East Lansing campus. As hundreds of officers scoured the campus, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit, students hid where they could Monday night.

During that time, police released a photo of the suspect & an “alert citizen” recognized him.

Police confronted McRae about 5 miles from campus in an industrial area, where he killed himself.

McRae was on probation for 18 months until May 2021 for possessing a loaded, concealed gun without a permit.

Playboi Carti was arrested in Georgia for allegedly choking his pregnant girlfriend following an argument over a paternity test.

According to the arrest affidavit, the woman told police the rapper grabbed her by her throat & pushed her, holding her neck until she could barely breathe & thought she was going to die.

Police say the woman told officers she's been in a relationship with Playboi Carti for 2 years, has lived with him since July 2022 & was 14 weeks pregnant at the time of the alleged incident on Dec. 20.

The woman told cops she wanted to talk to Playboi Carti about the baby & a conversation about a paternity test led to an argument, which she claims escalated to a physical attack. She told police a witness jumped in to try && break up the fight & when she was able to escape Carti's grasp, she ran to her car ... where she claims he attacked her again.

The alleged victim told cops Carti tried pulling her out of the car & put his hand over her mouth as she tried to use the vehicle's SOS feature to call police. Cops say the woman had visible injuries to her neck, chest & back.

Playboi Carti [real name: Jordan Carter] was arrested for felony aggravated assault.

His attorney, Brian Steel, tells TMZ..."Mr. Carter was falsely accused. Pursuant to my communications with the Fulton County District Attorney‘s office, this case will be dismissed without any prosecution or litigation."

NEW YORK (AP) — A man driving a U-Haul truck swerved onto sidewalks & plowed into scooter riders in New York City on Monday. 

At least 8 people were hurt, including 2 people who were in critical condition. Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the driver’s actions as a “violent rampage through Brooklyn” but said there was no evidence of “terrorism involvement.”

The truck sped through Brooklyn before police stopped it more than 3 miles away.

The driver, identified him as Weng Sor, was arrested. 

“Very frequently he’ll choose to skip out on his medications & do something like this. This isn’t the first time he’s been arrested. It’s not the first time he’s gone to jail,” said Stephen Sor, 30.

He said his father had been living in Las Vegas for the past few years. He said he didn’t speak to his father often, & was completely caught off guard when he showed up in Brooklyn in the middle of the night about a week ago.

“I try to just distance, as long as he leaves us alone,” Sor said.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's defense ministry said Sunday that security forces had arrested a suspected top cartel member accused of leading the region's production of fentanyl, which has killed thousands in the United States.

The arrest, which took place on Thursday in the state of Sinaloa, came just weeks after U.S. President Joe Biden visited Mexico, and followed the recent high-profile arrest of cartel leader Ovidio Guzman.

The suspect is described as being a leading logistics chief for the famed narco trafficker known as "Mayo Zambada," who jointly headed the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

"It should be noted that the accused is considered the main producer of fentanyl and methamphetamine pills, in addition to carrying out the large-scale transfer of cocaine from Central and South America to the U.S," the ministry said in a statement.

Following standard procedure in Mexico, it named him as Jose "N", not giving his full name.

Billy Bennett Adams III, 25, was arrested in Tampa, Florida, on February 8 on charges of killing his girlfriend who was 5 months pregnant at the time.

Adams, a semi-professional rapper known as Ace NH, faces charges of first-degree murder & the killing of an unborn child.

Adams allegedly gunned down his pregnant girlfriend, Alana Sims, 22, in front of her car while her 18-month-year-old slept inside it on January 30. 

Court documents allege that Sims, was 1 of 2 women Adams was dating & she was getting in the way of his freedom—so he killed her. Adams lured Sims into the New Tampa neighborhood Park, telling her they were heading to a party to celebrate his acquittal of a double murder charge only 13 days earlier.

Adams was acquitted of a double murder in Hillsborough County that took place in 2020. Jurors found Adams not guilty in January after he went on trial on charges of killing 2 men in a Lutz recording studio. He had told the jury that it was self-defense. That shooting was believed to be gang-related & the rapper self-identified as being part of the "Crips" gang.

"Mere days after he was acquitted of a separate crime, our homicide suspect did the unthinkable when he killed an innocent woman & her unborn child," said Interim Chief Lee Bercaw. "I hope this arrest brings some closure to the victim's family who is mourning the loss of 2 loved ones. We are working with the State Attorney's Office to ensure the suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — 2 former Ohio State football players were acquitted Thursday on charges of rape & kidnapping stemming from a sexual encounter they had with a woman in an apartment the 2 players shared.

Amir Riep & Jahsen Wint embraced each other & both cried after the jury verdict was read. Their attorneys argued at trial that the woman had consensual sex with both men but regretted it afterward. They also accused the victim’s father of pushing her & authorities to pursue criminal charges.

Franklin County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Meyer said the woman went to the apartment expecting to hang out with Riep, but that the 3 men violently raped her.

The jury deliberated for less than 4 hours before finding Riep & Wint both innocent of 2 counts of rape & a kidnapping charge. Each man could have faced more than 30 years in prison & registration as sex offenders if convicted.

The two players were kicked off the team in February 2020 after their arrests.

The woman told police that she was having consensual sex with Riep before Wint came into the room & both forced her into sex. After several minutes, they stopped & Riep recorded the woman agreeing that the sex was consensual.

Riep & Lloyd McFarquhar, another former Ohio State football player, both testified on Wednesday that players had been told to get evidence that their sexual partners consented to protect themselves from prosecution.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday that on his order a U.S. fighter jet shot down an “unidentified object” that was flying high over the Yukon, acting a day after the U.S. took similar action over Alaska.

North American Aerospace Defense Command, the combined U.S.-Canada organization that provides shared defense of airspace over the two nations, detected the object flying at a high altitude Friday evening over Alaska. It crossed into Canadian airspace on Saturday.

Trudeau spoke with President Joe Biden, who also ordered the object to be shot down. Canadian & U.S. jets operating as part of NORAD were scrambled & it was a U.S. jet that shot down the object.

F-22 fighter jets have now taken out 3 objects in the airspace above the U.S. & Canada over 7 days, a stunning development that is raising questions on just what, exactly, is hovering overhead & who has sent them.

At least 1 of the objects downed was believed to be a spy balloon from China, but the other 2 had not yet been publicly identified. While Trudeau described the object Saturday as “unidentified,” a NORAD spokesman, Maj. Olivier Gallant, said the military had determined what it was but would not reveal details.

Just about a day earlier, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said an object roughly the size of a small car was shot out of the skies above remote Alaska. Officials couldn’t say if it contained any surveillance equipment, where it came from or what purpose it had.

On Feb. 4, U.S. officials shot down a large white balloon off the coast of South Carolina.

The balloon was part of a large surveillance program that China has been conducting for “several years,” the Pentagon has said. The U.S. has said Chinese balloons have flown over dozens of countries across 5 continents in recent years.

A 12-year-old car theft suspect died of a gunshot wound after being confronted by the car's owner, according to the Denver Police Department.

Denver's Office of the Medical Examiner reported Tuesday that Elias Armstrong, 12, died of a gunshot wound Sunday.

Police received a report of an auto theft in the 8300 block of E. Northfield Boulevard.

The car's owner tracked the vehicle using an app & found it stopped in the area of West 12th Avenue & North Decatur Street.

"When the vehicle’s owner approached the car, he was involved in an exchange of gunfire with occupant(s) in the stolen vehicle," according to investigators. "A juvenile male then drove the stolen vehicle to the 2900 block of W. 10th Ave., where he was found by officers to be suffering from a gunshot wound."

Armstrong was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The car's owner gave a statement to investigators. He has not been arrested & no charges have been filed.

It appears other occupants of the stolen vehicle "fled on foot prior to officers’ arrival."

In May of 2021, Denver Police sent out an alert to help locate a 10-year-old boy named Elias Armstrong who ran away from home. The boy was quickly located & the alert was canceled. Police verified it's the same boy.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. F-22 fighter jet on Friday shot down an unidentified object flying high over Alaska, U.S. officials said, less than a week after the military brought down a Chinese balloon that had flown across the United States.

A Sidewinder missile downed the latest craft, which was about the size of a small car, said U.S. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon's chief spokesperson.

"We don't know who owns this object," said White House spokesperson John Kirby, adding that it was unclear where it began its flight.

President Joe Biden ordered the shootdown, which was announced from the White House.

On Feb. 4, another U.S. F-22 fighter jet brought down what the U.S. government called a Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina following its week-long journey across the United States & portions of Canada. China's government has said it was a civilian research vessel.

Some lawmakers criticized the president for not shooting down the Chinese balloon sooner. The U.S. military had recommended waiting until it was over the ocean out of fear of injuries from falling debris.

The Pentagon & the White House declined to give a detailed description of the latest object, saying only that it was far smaller than the Chinese balloon.

U.S. officials declined to speculate about what the object might be, even after a day of observation, raising questions about what kind of object could be so difficult to identify by experienced U.S. pilots & intelligence officials.

The Pentagon said it was first detected on Thursday using ground radars. F-35 aircraft were then sent to investigate. The UFO was flying at about 40,000 feet in a northeasterly direction, posing a risk to civilian air traffic.

The object was shot down off the coast of northeastern Alaska over frozen U.S. territorial waters near the Canadian border.
