CNN - Arizona authorities targeting the Sinaloa drug cartel have seized narcotics estimated to be worth more than $13 million, including more than 4.5 million fentanyl pills, 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine & large quantities of heroin, cocaine & fentanyl powder, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The agency said the seizure was the culmination of a 3-year-long investigation during which 150 people had so far been charged.
“The fentanyl seized represents more than 30 million potentially lethal doses,” the DEA said.
Authorities displayed some of the recovered narcotics at a joint news conference Thursday.
“The sample you see here today is staggering. There are over 4.5 million fentanyl pills, over 140 pounds of fentanyl powder, over 135 kilos of cocaine, over 3,000 pounds of methamphetamine, 35 kilos of heroin, 49 firearms & over $2 million in cash,” Interim Tempe Police Chief Josie Montenegro said.
According to authorities, “numerous” people were taken into custody in the bust.
Phoenix DEA Special Agent in Charge Cheri Oz said investigators are “laser-focused” on the Sinaloa cartel.
“I want to be crystal clear, the drugs in this room & the drugs that are flooding Arizona every single day are sourced primarily by one evil as the Sinaloa drug cartel,” she said. “We are laser-focused on them & we will defeat them. We will not stop.”
The country is struggling with a decades-long opioid epidemic in which fentanyl has become the most commonly used drug involved in overdoses.
Deaths involving synthetic opioids increased by 22% in 2021, according to CDC data, & in 2022, there were about 181,806 nonfatal opioid overdoses recorded in the U.S.

TAMPA, Fla. (ABC Action News) — Hillsborough County Judge Christopher Sabella sentenced admitted killer Steven Lorenzo to death by lethal injection for 2 murders he committed in 2003.
Last December, Lorenzo pleaded guilty to drugging, torturing, raping, murdering & dismembering Jason Galehouse & Michael Wachholtz.
Previously in the sentencing trial, Lorenzo asked the judge for the death penalty.
"I'm seeking the death penalty. It's in my best interest basically, because it's a comfort. I'll be living my life more comfortable than it would in the federal system. Living on death row, believe it or not & of course, that may sound selfish, but I've lived in a private cell for the last 5 years & I'm going to have a private cell on death row," he said.
Lorenzo also talked about reincarnation multiple times.
"I'm going to try to speed up this process. So I don't have to wait 15 years, because I got better things to do to my time. The sooner that I get euthanized, as far as I'm concerned, the faster I can, the sooner I can get myself the new body & come back again, a fresh body. That's how I look at it, because that's how it is. That's how spirituality work. We're eternal beings," he said.
Nearly 20 years ago, on back-to-back nights, Jason Galehouse & Michael Wachholtz disappeared from a Tampa nightclub.
Scott Schweikert testified during the penalty phase trial about his involvement in the 2 disappearances.
"We already determined we worked well together using another individual. We wanted to see if we could go to the next step, which would be murder," he testified.
Schweikert took a plea deal in 2016. Lorenzo pleaded guilty in December but said Schweikert's account is wrong.

BUNNELL, Fla. (WSVN) — A 17-year-old special needs student is accused of violently knocking out a teacher’s aide over a video game.
“Go with Deputy King. Look at me. Are you gonna be cool with Deputy King and I?” asked a deputy on bodycam video.
“I don’t want to go to jail,” replied the teen.
Flagler County deputies could be seen putting the teenager in handcuffs on the video.
According to authorities, he knocked a teacher’s aide unconscious for allegedly taking away his Nintendo Switch.
The incident happened on Tuesday at Matanzas High School in Flagler County.
“Telling him he couldn’t do it. She left the classroom, he chased her into the hallway & very violently pushed her to the ground so hard it completely knocked her unconscious,” said Sheriff Rick Staly.
The push launched the aide 5 to 6 feet in the air before she hit the floor. Afterward, he kicked her, got on top of her and started to beat her.
“Then started kicking this teacher & punching her throughout her body, face, chest, very violently,” said Staly.
The report also said he hit her about 15 times before good Samaritans came to her rescue.
Deputies said as they walked the teen past the unconscious victim, the teen spit on her & threatened to come back & kill her. Parents said they are shocked.
“I feel very sorry for the teacher, the paraprofessional who was attacked. It’s just something we see all too often these days,” said a parent.
“I hope he’s all right. I hope the paraprofessional is all right. That’s not what you sign up for. You sign up to help kids,” said another parent.
The student reportedly stands 6 feet, 7 inches tall & weighs about 220 pounds.
He has been charged with felony aggravated battery.
