(CNN) Six Russian military officers were charged on Monday for hacking into software using destructive malware to black out thousands of computers & cause nearly $1 billion in losses, actions that the Justice Department says were intended to support Russian government efforts to undermine, retaliate against, or otherwise destabilize worldwide computer networks.

The alleged hackers are officers of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), a military intelligence agency of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

Prosecutors said they attacked Ukraine; the country of Georgia; elections in France; efforts to hold Russia accountable for its use of a weapons-grade nerve agent, Novichok, on foreign soil; & the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games after Russian athletes were banned from participating under their nation's flag, as a consequence of Russian government-sponsored doping effort.

The United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania issued a federal arrest warrant for each of these defendants upon the grand jury's return of the indictment.

"The defendants' & their co-conspirators caused damage & disruption to computer networks worldwide, including in France, Georgia, the Netherlands, Republic of Korea, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States," prosecutors said.

They are all charged in seven counts: conspiracy to conduct computer fraud and abuse, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, damaging protected computers & aggravated identity theft.

One of the pieces of malware developed by the hackers took down the medical systems of Heritage Valley in Pennsylvania, prosecutors said.

From November 2015 to October 2019, "their computer attacks used some of the world's most destructive malware to date, including: KillDisk and Industroyer, which each caused blackouts in Ukraine; NotPetya, which caused nearly $1 billion in losses to the three victims identified in the indictment alone; & Olympic Destroyer, which disrupted thousands of computers used to support the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics," prosecutors said.

The NotPetya malware, for example, spread worldwide, damaged computers used in critical infrastructure & caused enormous financial losses. Those losses were only part of the harm, however. For example, the NotPetya malware impaired Heritage Valley's provision of critical medical services to citizens of the Western District of Pennsylvania through its two hospitals, 60 offices & 18 community satellite facilities.

Yuriy Sergeyevich Andrienko, 32; Sergey Vladimirovich Detistov, 35; Pavel Valeryevich Frolov, 28; Anatoliy Sergeyevich Kovalev, 29; Artem Valeryevich Ochichenko, 27; & Petr Nikolayevich Pliskin, 32, face a maximum sentence of 27 years in prison for wire fraud.

They are wanted & assumed to be in Russia.

Prosecutors said Kovalev allegedly developed "spearphishing techniques and messages" to target: En Marche! officials; employees of the DSTL; members of the IOC and Olympic athletes; and employees of a Georgian media entity."

Kolvalev was previously charged in a 2018 federal indictment number in Washington, DC, with conspiring to gain unauthorized access into the computers of US persons and entities involved in the administration of the 2016 US elections.

Video After The Jump

In this episode of 'People's Party,' Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, author, actor, activist, filmmaker and college professor -- NARCY

The topics covered in this deeply profound and insightful discussion include the culture shock that Narcy experienced with his move from Dubai to Montreal, Canada at age 5. They also go on to talk about Narcy directing some of Talib's music videos, the racism that Narcy had to endure during the first Iraq war as well as following the 911 attacks. They touch on the influence of Malcolm X, dangers of the 'deep fake' era, the famous 13th century Muslim poet Rumi, internet becoming a basic human need, Narcy's album 'SpaceTime', the effectiveness of comedy in hip hop, Narcy's song 'Hamdulillah', Narcy's book 'Text Messages: or How I Found Myself Time Traveling', Narcy teaching as a hip hop professor at Concordia, how deeply he has been influenced by the Wu-Tang Clan, and much more.

TiMESTAMPS:

3:22 -- Talib thanks Narcy for directing several of his music videos, such as 'Traveling Light' and asks him to share what he was trying to capture with those visuals. Narcy goes on to speak on the concept, and his intentions behind it. They also discuss his direction for the video 'All of Us'. Narcy talks about how hip hop has helped him find his voice, coming at just the right time in his life, and the importance he felt in paying homage as a guest in hip hop culture. Narcy also gets asked for his take on the notion of the video killing the radio star, and if he thinks that music videos take something away from how a listener experiences a song. He goes on to explain how he conceptualizes the music videos that he directs.

11:08 -- Narcy is asked about the biggest social shocks he encountered when he moved from Dubai to Montreal, Canada, heaving to learn French at an immigrant school. He talks about one of the most formative experiences there, during the first Iraq war, and the outward racism he experienced at that time. Talib reflects on his first taste of activism during those years. Narcy expands on the disolousion he experienced with how the media was portraying these wars in the middle east, and also speaks on the connection he felt with the black and brown communities in America in the way their deaths were viewed as merely statistics.

20:01 -- Talib speaks on his Muslim name meaning the student or the seeker, and how he was asked if he might consider going by just 'Kweli' following the 911 attacks. Talib asks Narcy why he decided to make hip hop the vehicle for him in channelling his viewpoint about what was going on in the world following Sept. 11th. He illustrates what happened on the day of the attacks, and how there was a rumor going around that he and his sister were cheering in the streets. He talks about how hip hop was the perfect escape of a "non-judgemental space", especially groups like Public Enemy and Wu-Tang Clan.

25:51 -- Narcy is asked about his choice to sample Malcolm X's famous speech 'The Ballot or the Bullet'. He reflects on his father bringing him to see Spike Lee's bioepic in the theater when he was 13 years old, and how it drew him in. He illustrates the reasons why Malcolm's story connected so deeply with him as a young Muslim immigrant, and tells how Malcolm's words continually influence and shape how he lives his life even today.

29:39 -- Jasmin brings up Narcy's "deep fake" themed video for 'Thoughts And Prayers', and asks Narcy if he thinks that the rise of technology and our dependence of it will just keep making it harder for us to distinguish the truth from fiction. Narcy speaks on the clear and present danger of the desensitization that deep fakes create on our culture. They also discuss some of the controversy around who is running the meme site 'Daquan'.

35:45 -- Narcy talks about his grandfather being the first poet in his family, and the influence that he had on him at an early age. He also talks about Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet, and how his works heavily based in islam impacted him to think on 'a heart level'. Talib also asks Narcy how his faith affects his musical output. Narcy explains how it reminds him that every intention is more important than the act itself, and remaining cognizant of the fact that everything you put out into the world reverberates.

43:11 -- Narcy is asked about his interlude 'I Got 5G on it', that speaks to wifi accessibility. They discuss how today's internet has become a basic human need just like water, food and shelter. Talib goes on to ask Narcy to remind him where they met. The story begins with Talib talling Narcy and his crew to get off the stage during a sound check, then leads to Talib finding a book Narcy wrote 'The Diatribes of a Dying Tribe' on his shelf that he signed to him. Talib goes on to reflect on how much of an inspirational read it was.

51:58 -- Narcy is asked about the concept for his 2018 album 'SpaceTime'. He explains how it was about illustrating where he was in that moment, as opposed to his prior albums that focused on how past experiences have shaped him to that point. They also discuss Narcy's use of comedy in his music, as he traces it back to his early youth when he randomly picked out a betamax tape of Eddie Murphy's 'Delirious' stand-up special. He talks about how he utilizes comedy to disarm people's hangups, while making them question themselves for their own laughter on touchy subjects. Narcy also speaks of his character 'Jasim' that he created and explains his significance.

1:00:53 -- Talib brings up one of Narcy's most renowned songs, 'Hamdulillah'. The video getting cameos from Muslim emcees such as Jay Electronica, Tragedy Khadafi, Brother Ali and others. He asks Narcy how he felt when the video really took off and started getting so much acclaim. Narcy speaks on the intention behind the video being a way to showcase the real diversity within the Islamic faith. Jasmin also asks Narcy about the origins of his rap name, and why he changed it from The Narcicyst.

1:07:37 -- Narcy's book 'Text Messages: or How I Found Myself Time Traveling' is brought up. Talib recites an excerpt: "Young boys and girls trapped in Walmarts— our consumer interim camps. A family-friendly, discounted freedom. You don’t see what the Internet can’t. Not our land or home. Not your mans or holmes. Not your towers or domes. Not your power or drones." He goes on to ask Narcy how capitalism has failed the modern world.

1:12:54 -- Narcy is asked about his work at Concordia University teaching hip hop as a fine-arts professor. They discuss how the opportunity came about from being invited in as a guest speaker. He explains how he split the courses into two curriculums with 'Beats Rhymes & Life' and 'It's Bigger Than Hip Hop'. Narcy stresses how important he felt it was to make sure the students fully realize their privilege of education in order for them to be able to fully value what was being taught. Narcy also talks about his collaboration with classic rock musician Todd Rundgren and how it came about.

1:18:39 -- Narcy touches on how much the Wu-Tang Clan influenced him. He tells how he picked up a cassette tape of 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' and played it until the tape burnt out, and then bought the CD, and learned it front to back. And that was just the beginning, as from that point on the Wu-Tang aura was a recurring theme, impacting all aspects throughout his young life, even how he approached studying his faith. Talib goes on to ask Narcy one final question of how important it is for lyrical emcees to understand that music is feeling based first before anything else.

PARIS (AP) — The trial of a Russian man alleged to have used ransomware in a 135 million euros ($157 million) bitcoin fraud will begin Monday.

Alexander Vinnik, who is also wanted in the United States and in Russia, faces up to ten years in prison at his Paris trial over charges of extortion, money laundering and criminal association.

French prosecutors say Vinnik was one of the creators of malware called “Locky” which was delivered through email. If downloaded, the recipient’s data was encrypted and they were asked to pay a ransom in bitcoin to free it.

In France, companies, legal offices and local councils were targeted between 2016 and 2018. Twenty victims paid the ransom through BTC-e, one of the world’s largest digital currency exchanges.

Vinnik, 41, says he was a only technical consultant at BTC-e and had no knowledge of illegal activity. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The United States also wants to prosecute Vinnik, accusing him of laundering billions of dollars through BTC-e. He was arrested at the request of U.S. authorities in the summer of 2017 while on vacation in northern Greece,

After a two-year legal tug-of-war, Greek authorities ruled Vinnik would be extradited first to France, then to the U.S., and finally to Russia.

In January after he was extradited to France, Vinnik began a 35-day hunger strike saying he wanted to be extradited first to Russia, where he faces lesser charges.

Bobby Shmurda has big plans for when he gets out of prison, but he's gotta put 'em on the back burner because the parole board still isn't feeling his whole "I've changed" vibe.

The rapper told the board he wants to resume his career in entertainment, but also wants to do outreach programs with troubled youth who need guidance. According to a transcript of his September parole hearing ... he also told the parole board he thinks of himself now as a "leader" and not a follower.

Shmurda claims he got into a lot of trouble when he was younger because he felt he would look like a punk if he walked away from fights. He added that's all changed now, and said he feels too "grown" to be fighting and arguing.

As we first reported, Bobby was denied parole during the hearing, but the transcript reveals exactly how he made his case to be released. According to the docs, he said he's no longer impulsive, and takes time to think about others and walk away from bad situations when they pop up.

There's a good reason that didn't fly with the board. In denying Shmurda, board members pointed out he's had "multiple" violations while in prison, including allegedly having a shank, fighting and drug possession.

Shmurda says he wants to get a high school G.E.D. when he gets out. Most likely he's got just over a year to study. We're told it's almost certain he'll remain inside until December 11, 2021 ... when his 7-year sentence ends.

Video After The Jump

A rapper who posted a YouTube video bragging about bilking California’s unemployment system was charged Friday with doing just that.

Prosecutors say Nuke Bizzle, whose real name is Fontrell Antonio Baines, was part of a scam that collected at least $1.2 million in bogus payments from California, using the coronavirus pandemic to rack up the cash.

In the video, titled EDD, for California’s Employment Development Division, the rapper shows himself going to the mailbox with stacks of applications, and bragging that “you gotta sell cocaine, I just file a claim.”

The video, where he’s joined by fellow rapper Fat Wizza, even gives a shout-out to President Trump, who signed the law making it easier to claim unemployment during the pandemic and boosting the weekly cash payments.”

Fox News’s Tucker Carlson featured Mr. Baines‘ video on his show Sept. 22, in a segment about welfare fraud.

A day later, Mr. Baines was arrested by police in Las Vegas. Police said he was in possession of seven bogus unemployment benefit cards in six other people’s names with him.

Federal investigators have since tied him and “co-schemers” to 92 cards.

Investigators said someone added a disclaimer to the YouTube video in the last few saying it “was created with props and was made for entertainment purposes.”

But at one point in the video an application is shown — and it turns out a bogus application was filed under that name, according to the charges filed.

Even before this week’s federal arrest, some commenters on YouTube had sensed something was amiss.

“I have never seen a singer become so committed to their singing before,” wrote one.

By Friday night, commenters were ready to convict Mr. Baines.

A 20-year-old Mexican woman was shot and killed in a tragic accident while filming a fake kidnapping for TikTok.

Areline Martinez, who had previously posted other phony abductions on the social media app, was accidentally shot in the head last week while filming the latest video in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico News Daily reported.

At least 10 people were present when Martinez, bound and tied to a chair, began struggling with her fake captors and the .45-caliber handgun went off, striking her in the head and killing her instantly, the outlet reported.

A YouTube video posted online shows Martinez just seconds before her death.

Authorities said two men fled in a Jeep Cherokee immediately following the fatal mishap, according to the report, which was originally published by the Mexican news conglomerate Sipse.

Police have identified the two men but have yet to track them down, the outlet said.

It is unclear why a loaded gun was used as a prop during the Oct. 2 incident, police said.

Martinez was the mother of a 1-year-old child, the reports said. “Never sad, always crazy,” her Instagram page reads.

Friends and relatives have since set up a Facebook page in her memory.

“We hope people who love Areline will find comfort in visiting her profile to remember and celebrate he life,” the page reads.

Video After The Jump

An Atlantic City cop not only saved the life of a suicidal man ... he showed compassion by telling the guy he loved him.

The guy perched himself on the bridge of a parking garage this week and threatened to jump. Cops got a distress call but the caller didn't give the exact coordinates, so police went on the hunt. The guy's family sent police a photo of him and that helped them eventually find him atop the parking structure.

Enter Officer Eric Knuttel, a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team. Knuttel began talking to the man, but 10 minutes into the conversation, the guy became extremely upset and walked to the ledge, creating a perilous situation.

Knuttel eventually made his way to the man, grabbed him by the leg and thwarted the suicide threat. As the man was moved back from the ledge, you hear Knuttel say to the guy, "I love you." Another cop says, "We'll make sure everything's ok."

The guy was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Earlier this week, Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon accidentally shared an explicit photo of girlfriend Izabela Guedes on Instagram, in which her breast was exposed, via Awesemo.com. Although the 25-year-old athlete tried to cover it up with an emoji, it was misplaced.

Guedes, a model and swimwear designer, frequently shares bikini-clad shots with her legions of Instagram followers.

Gordon's mistake is not nearly as bad as Denver Nuggets player Jamal Murray, who uploaded a video to the platform of his girlfriend Harper Hempel performing a sex act on him. Murray said afterwards that he was hacked.

A history teacher who had allegedly shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed in class was decapitated and his assailant shot dead by French police as they tried to arrest him on Friday, police and prosecutors said. French anti-terror prosecutors said they were investigating the assault which happened on the outskirts of Paris at around 5:00 pm local time near a school in Conflans Saint-Honorine, a western suburb of the French capital.

Le Parisien and Reuters reported the teacher recently gave a class on freedom of expression and showed cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which are considered by Muslims to be blasphemous.

CBS News' Elaine Cobbe reports that a Twitter thread posted on October 9 contained allegations that a history teacher in Conflans Sainte-Honorine had shown students the cartoons depicting Muhammad. The thread contained a video of a man who said his daughter, a Muslim, was one of the pupils in the class, and that she was shocked by the teacher's actions. There is no indication the man in the video is connected to the teacher's death.

Prosecutors said they were treating the incident as "a murder linked to a terrorist organization" and related to a "criminal association with terrorists."

The allegations are similar to charges brought last month against a 25-year old Pakistani man who wounded two people in a meat cleaver attack to avenge the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed by the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The attacker seriously injured two employees of a TV production agency, whose offices are on the same block that used to house Charlie Hebdo. Both survived.

That attack came three weeks into an ongoing trial of suspected accomplices of the authors of the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket, which also saw a policewoman gunned down in the street.

TARRANT COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – A 5th grader in the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District has a habit of setting very lofty goals for himself… he also has a habit of exceeding them.

So, it isn’t surprising that Orion Jean wants to continue his mission to do good for others into the holiday season.

Earlier this fall, the Chisholm Ridge Elementary student collected and donated hundreds of toys to hospitalized children in Dallas through his Race to 500 Toys drive. Now, he’s started another drive with the goal of donating thousands of meals to people in need by Thanksgiving.

In addition to the work Orion is doing on his own, the Race to 100,000 Meals food drive will be be accepting food donations from the public on Saturday, October 24. Donations for that one day should be dropped off between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Chisholm Ridge neighborhood at 1005 Lindstrom Drive in Fort Worth.

Donors are asked to bring packed meals containing 1 bottle of water, 2 tangerines or 1 apple in a zipped sandwich bag, 1 applesauce cup or tuna pouch, and 1 packaged granola bar. The contents should be inside a brown paper bag with a positive message written on it.

“I’m asking everyone to join me in a race to kindness,” Orion said. “This has been a rough year for everybody, and now it’s more important than ever to show support and love to anyone who needs it.”

Orion began collecting donations earlier this week and has already received nearly 4,000 meals.

Over the summer, Orion won the Think Kindness National Speech contest, where he urged others to show compassion through action. As champion, he was given $500 to start his own kindness project where he went on to collect toys for hospitalized children.
