A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in the driver’s seat of his car in Hawthorne Thursday, July 8, and police were searching for the shooter, authorities said.
Hawthorne police were called to an apartment complex in the 14100 block of Chadron Avenue about 4:10 p.m. and found the man slumped over behind the wheel of a car in a rear carport, Lt. Ti Goetz said.
The victim, identified by the coroner as Zerail Dijon Rivera of Los Angeles, had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, Goetz said.
“It appears to have been a walk-up shooting and he appears to have been targeted,” Goetz said.
The suspect fled the large, multi-story, gated apartment complex before police arrived. The block, in the east side of the city, has several multi-story complexes.
Detectives were checking video systems in the area and were working on leads, Goetz said.
All 5 of the "Blow" collaborations between Ar-Ab and Dark Lo are fire, but this one is my favorite. So many quotables from the OBH CEO, Ab and his right hand man Lo, as they trade bars over an absolutely sinister beat by V Don.
Classic right here!

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — The death toll in the collapse of a Miami-area condo building rose to 78 on Friday, a number the mayor called “heartbreaking” as recovery workers toiled for a 16th day to find victims in the rubble. Another 62 people remain unaccounted for.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the work to recover victims was “moving forward with great urgency” in order to bring closure to the families of victims who have spent an agonizing two weeks waiting for news.
“This is a staggering and heartbreaking number that affects all of us very deeply,” Levine Cava said of the latest death toll.
“All those who have passed — all 78 — are leaving behind loved ones. They’re leaving behind devastated families. The magnitude of this tragedy is growing each and every day,” she said.
Rescue workers and emergency support teams from Florida and several other states have labored in 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day at the site of the devastated beachfront condominium in Surfside — physically and emotionally taxing work performed amid oppressive heat and in dangerous conditions.
“We know that there will be long-term impacts for the teams on the front line,” Levine Cava said. “They have given so much of themselves in these first two weeks.”
Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky said taking care of the mental health and well-being of the first responders is a priority. He said it is critical that the first responders communicate with each other. “It’s important for us to talk,” he said.
To that end, Levine Cava said officials have added peer support personnel at the fire stations.
No one has been found alive since the first hours after a large section of the 12-story Champlain Towers South came crashing down on June 24.
Hope of finding survivors was briefly rekindled after workers demolished the remainder of the building Sunday night, allowing access to new areas of debris. Some voids where survivors could have been trapped did exist, mostly in the basement and the parking garage, but no one was found alive. Instead, teams recovered more than a dozen additional victims.
On Wednesday, workers shifted their mission from search and rescue to recovery after concluding that there was “no chance of life” in the rubble.
Levine Cava said the deaths of so many is “an aching hole in the center of this closeknit family here in Surfside.”
On Thursday, Paraguay’s foreign minister said in a radio report that the body of the sister of that country’s first lady was among those found. Several Latin American citizens were reported in the building when it collapsed. Rescue workers now focused on finding remains instead of survivors have pledged to keep up their search for victims until they clear all the debris at the site.
State and local officials have pledged financial assistance to families of the victims, as well as to residents of the building who survived but lost all their possessions. Meanwhile, authorities are launching a grand jury investigation into the collapse. And at least six lawsuits have been filed by families.
Rapper Lil Baby, one of two people detained by French police as part of a drug investigation, has been released, officials said.
He was ordered to pay a fine for the use of narcotics, the Paris prosecutor's office told NBC News Friday morning. The amount of the fine and the name of the second person detained were not released.
Lil Baby, whose real name is Dominique Armani Jones, was in Paris with NBA star James Harden for Fashion Week.
Harden, who had been seen with Jones around Paris over the past week, was not in custody.
An investigation was opened by the city’s 8th district police precinct, the prosecutor’s office said.
Video recorded by a bystander and shared online appears to show Harden and at least one other Black man being surrounded by police and having their pockets searched.
“It’s OK," Harden can be heard in the short clip telling someone off camera. "I don’t understand."
News of the arrest was first reported by the French newspaper Le Parisien and confirmed by NBC News. The newspaper said both Jones and Harden were among a group who were stopped by police about 4:50 p.m. local time after three people exited a car smelling of marijuana.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a Friday phone call that he must “take action” against cybercriminals acting in his country and that the U.S. reserves the right to “defend its people and its critical infrastructure,” the White House said.
The conversation came less than a month after the two leaders met in Geneva, when Biden warned against continuing cyberattacks on U.S. businesses and infrastructure emanating from Russia. A new ransomware attack linked to the REvil hacking group based in Russia caused widespread disruption last weekend, affecting as many as 1,500 businesses.
The White House said “President Biden underscored the need for Russia to take action to disrupt ransomware groups operating in Russia and emphasized that he is committed to continued engagement on the broader threat posed by ransomware.
“President Biden reiterated that the United States will take any necessary action to defend its people and its critical infrastructure in the face of this continuing challenge,” the White House added.
The latest conversation between the two world leaders followed a series of ransomware attacks on vital infrastructure and major corporations that have elevated the threat to an urgent national security problem for the Biden administration.
A May attack on a pipeline that supplies roughly half the fuel consumed on the East Coast caused the company to temporarily halt operations. Colonial Pipeline paid roughly $4.4 million in ransom, and U.S. authorities were able to claw back a large portion of that sum in a law enforcement operation last month.
Hackers also extorted an $11 million ransom payment from JBS SA, the world’s largest meat processor.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - She was awarded an honorary Pulitzer for filming the murder of George Floyd by then Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, now Darnella Fraizer is mourning the death of her uncle, Leneal Frazier, killed Tuesday morning when a Minneapolis police squad car pursuing a vehicle believed to have been involved in multiple robberies struck the car he was driving.
In a Facebook post, Darnella wrote, "I honestly can’t believe I’m making this post right now...I’m so hurt...nothing feels real. I woke up to the most horrible news," going on to write, "MY uncle... Another Black man lost his life in the hands of the police! I asked my mom several times "he died??" I couldn’t accept what I was hearing and still can’t. Some things just take time to process."
Family says Leneal was heading to his girlfriend’s house when the MPD squad struck his car.
Early Tuesday morning, Minneapolis police officers were pursuing an armed robbery suspect in the area of North 41st Avenue and North Lyndale Avenue. While traveling northbound, the squad struck Leneal's car in the intersection. The squad then went into the southbound lane and struck another uninvolved car. Both the officer and Leneal were taken by ambulance to North Memorial.
Leneal died of his injuries. The officer was injured but is expected to survive.
"This is not fair, not right," Leneal’s daughter, Lanesha Frazier said. "I didn’t expect that to be my father. I’m really grieving because all these police out here, they’re not watching what they’re doing… they need to watch what they’re doing, innocent people out here being hurt."
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
On Wednesday, Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne “Gammy” Banfield Norris discussed drug addiction, particularly focusing on the increase of alcohol consumption among women in the latest Red Table Talk episode titled, “Are You Drinking Too Much? A Wake Up Call for Women.”
“One of the reasons why this particular show was really important to me is because wine, for me, was like Kool-Aid. ‘Cause, like, I was a–you know, a brown liquor drinker, vodka–like, I was a hard liquor drinker. Like, I could drink almost anybody under the table,” Jada began.
Jada recalled that she would mix drugs such as alcohol, weed and ecstasy, which eventually affected her work—particularly a time when she passed out on the set of The Nutty Professor (1996) due to consuming a bad batch of ecstasy.
“I had one incident,” Jada said. “That was an eye-opening incident for me as well. I had one incident on Nutty Professor. I passed out. Makeup trailer.”
That, along with “throwing up all over” Debbie Allen’s house was Jada’s “rock bottom”—it was her wake-up call.
