The death toll rose to four & 159 people are still unaccounted for after the partial collapse of a beachside condominium building in Surfside, officials said Friday.
Search & rescue teams worked throughout the night & were continuing to sift through the rubble of the Champlain Towers South, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.
"We will continue search & rescue because we still have hope that we will find people alive," the mayor said.
The bodies of three more victims were found at the site, bringing the death toll to four, while the number of people unaccounted for rose to 159, Levine Cava said. She said 120 people have been accounted for.
Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez said they are working with the medical examiner’s office to identify the four victims.
Many people remained at the reunification center set up near the collapse site early Friday morning, awaiting results of DNA swabs that could help identify victims.
"These are very difficult times & things are going to get more difficult as we move forward," Ramirez said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue assistant Chief Ray Jadallah said 130 firefighters are working on rescue operations at the site & they were receiving additional resources from FEMA.
Crews were using dogs & microphones to sift through the wreckage & try to find signs of life, Jadallah said.
“Every time we hear a sound, we concentrate on those areas,” he said.
Heavy machinery was being brought to the site Friday to help with the search & removal of debris, Levine Cava said. She added that rescuers were at “extreme risk” going through the rubble.
"Debris is falling on them as they do their work. We have structural engineers on site to ensure that they will not be injured, but they are proceeding because they are so motivated & they are taking extraordinary risk on the site every day,” she said.

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — A wing of a 12-story beachfront condo building collapsed with a roar in a town outside Miami early Thursday, killing at least one person & trapping residents in rubble & twisted metal. Rescuers pulled out dozens of survivors and continued to look for more.
Nearly 100 people were still unaccounted for at midday, authorities said, raising fears that the death toll could climb sharply. But officials did not know how many were in the tower when it fell around 1:30 a.m.
Hours after the collapse, searchers were trying to reach a trapped child whose parents were believed to be dead. In another case, rescuers saved a mother & child, but the woman’s leg had to be amputated to remove her from the rubble.
Video showed fire crews removing a boy from the wreckage, but it was not clear whether he was the same person.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, who toured the scene, said television did not capture the scale of what happened.
Rescue crews are “doing everything they can to save lives. That is ongoing & they’re not going to rest,” he said.
Teams of 10 to 12 rescuers were entering the rubble at a time with dogs & other equipment, working until they tire from the heavy lifting, then making way for a new team.
Patronis said he was deeply moved by the image of a bunk bed near the now-exposed top of the building.
“Somebody was probably sleeping in it,” he said. “There’s all those what-ifs.”
Authorities did not say what may have caused the collapse. On video footage captured from nearby, the center of the building appeared to fall first, with a section nearest the ocean teetering & coming down seconds later.
Work was being done on the building’s roof, but Burkett said he did not see how that could have been the cause.
“The building is literally pancaked,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said. “That is heartbreaking because it doesn’t mean, to me, that we are going to be as successful as we wanted to be in finding people alive.”

A Florida woman was arrested for allegedly slugging her girlfriend in the face after hearing her sleep-talk about an ex, a report said.
Alexis Talley, 23, woke up her 21-year-old girlfriend after the sleep-talking episode and told her that “she was talking in her sleep about an ex,” according to an arrest report obtained by The Smoking Gun.
The two started arguing inside their Tampa Bay-area apartment late on June 13 and the feud escalated when Talley allegedly socked the victim in the face.
The victim suffered swelling to the right side of her face, police said.
Talley admitted to verbally fighting with her girlfriend, but denied hitting her, according to cops.
Police arrested Talley and charged her with domestic battery.
She posted a $2,500 bond and was ordered by a judge to stay away from the victim.

REGINA, Saskatchewan (AP) — Leaders of Indigenous groups in Canada said Thursday investigators have found 751 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school for Indigenous children — a discovery that follows last month’s report of 215 at another school.
“This was a crime against humanity, an assault on First Nations,” said Chief Bobby Cameron of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous First Nations in Saskatchewan. He said he expects more graves will be found on residential school grounds across Canada.
“We will not stop until we find all the bodies.”
The bodies were discovered at the Marieval Indian Residential School, which operated from 1899 to 1997 where the Cowessess First Nation is now located, about 85 miles east of Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan.
Chief Cadmusn Delmore of the Cowessess said that the graves were marked at one time, but that the Roman Catholic Church that operated the school had removed the markers.
“The Pope needs to apologize for what happened,” he said. “An apology is one stage in the way of a healing journey.”
Last month the remains of 215 children, some as young as 3 years old, were found buried on the site of what was once Canada’s largest Indigenous residential school near Kamloops, British Columbia.
Following that discovery, Pope Francis expressed his pain over the discovery & pressed religious & political authorities to shed light on “this sad affair.” But he didn’t offer the apology sought by First Nations & by Canadian prime minister.
From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend state-funded Christian schools, the majority of them run by Roman Catholic missionary congregations, in a campaign to assimilate them into Canadian society.
The Canadian government has admitted that physical and sexual abuse was rampant in the schools, with students beaten for speaking their native languages.
(CNN) Rudy Giuliani, the former personal lawyer for former President Donald Trump, has been suspended from practicing law in New York state.
In a ruling released Thursday following disciplinary proceedings, a New York appellate court concluded that "there is uncontroverted evidence" that Giuliani "communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump's failed effort at reelection in 2020."

Giuliani's lawyers, John Leventhal and Barry Kamins, said in a statement Thursday they "are disappointed with the Appellate Division, First Department's decision suspending Mayor Giuliani prior to being afforded a hearing on the issues that are alleged. This is unprecedented as we believe that our client does not pose a present danger to the public interest. We believe that once the issues are fully explored at a hearing Mr. Giuliani will be reinstated as a valued member of the legal profession that he has served so well in his many capacities for so many years."

SURFSIDE, Fla. (NBC2) — At least one person has died and two others are in critical condition after part of a South Florida building collapsed early Thursday morning, officials said.
A search and rescue mission is underway in Surfside to find any survivors that might be trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building. Officials brought in search dogs to help assist in the recovery.
