WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer banking giant Wells Fargo was ordered to pay $3.7 billion in fines & refunds to customers by U.S. government regulators, the largest fine to date against the bank, which has spent years trying to rehabilitate itself after a series of scandals tied to its sales practices.
The amount is nearly quadruple the previous $1 billion penalty that Wells Fargo paid in 2018 to cover widespread consumer law violations.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Tuesday ordered Wells to repay $2 billion to consumers & enacted a $1.7 billion penalty against the bank. The bureau spelled out a laundry list of consumer financial law violations, from illegal fees & interest on auto loans & mortgages, as well as incorrectly applied overdraft fees against savings & checking accounts.
The bureau says the bad behavior by the bank impacted more than 16 million customers.
Wells Fargo has been repeatedly sanctioned by U.S. regulators for violations of consumer protections law going back to 2016, when Wells employees were found to have opened millions of accounts illegally in order to meet unrealistic sales goals. Since then, Wells has spent its time saying it’s cleaning up its act, only to be repeatedly fined for additional violations of consumer protection law.
The bank remains under a Federal Reserve order forbidding it from growing any larger until the Fed deems that its corporate culture problems are resolved. That order, originally enacted in 2018, was expected to last only a year or 2.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a month-long trial & 9 days of deliberations, Los Angeles jurors on Monday found Harvey Weinstein guilty of the rape & sexual assault of just 1 of the 4 accusers he was charged with abusing.
But the 3 guilty counts involving an Italian actor & model known at the trial as Jane Doe 1 still struck a major blow against the disgraced movie mogul, and provided another #MeToo moment of reckoning, 5 years after he became a magnet for the movement.
Weinstein, 70, who is 2 years into a 23-year sentence for a rape & sexual assault conviction in New York that is under appeal, could get up to 24 years in prison in California when he’s sentenced.
He was found guilty of rape, forced oral copulation & another sexual misconduct count involving the woman who said he appeared uninvited at her hotel room door during a Los Angeles film festival in 2013.
“Harvey Weinstein forever destroyed a part of me that night in 2013 & I will never get that back. The criminal trial was brutal & Weinstein’s lawyers put me through hell on the witness stand, but I knew I had to see this through to the end, & I did,” the woman said in a statement after the verdict. “I hope Weinstein never sees the outside of a prison cell during his lifetime.”

BROOKLYN (WABC) -- A Brooklyn bishop whose robbery during a church service was captured on a live stream was arrested Monday for fraud, extortion & false statements.
Federal prosecutors accuse Lamor Whitehead of defrauding one of his parishioners out of part of her retirement savings, attempting to extort & defraud a businessman & lying to the FBI.
"Whitehead carried out several duplicitous schemes in order to receive funds from his victims.
Additionally, when speaking with authorities, Whitehead consciously chose to mislead and lie to them," FBI Assistant Director Michael J. Driscoll said.
The filing claims Whitehead convinced a woman to invest approximately $90,000 of her retirement savings with him but he instead spent the money on himself, including purchasing luxury goods.
Prosecutors also allege that Whitehead extorted a businessman for $5,000, then attempted to convince the same businessman to lend him $500,000 & cut him in on real estate deals.
Additionally, FBI investigators say Whitehead told agents he had just 1 cellphone when he in fact had a 2nd phone which he used regularly.
Whitehead faces potentially decades in prison.
His attorney, Dawn Florio, denied the charges saying, "Bishop Whitehead denies these allegations & we are going to fight them vigorously."
Back in July, Whitehead was leading a live-streamed church service at Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie when three armed men stormed in.
He told investigators they stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from him & his wife.
2 suspects in the robbery were arrested.
Prosecutors say the charges against Whitehead predate that crime.

Drake has lost some big money after placing a bet on Argentina to win over France in the World Cup.
The Canadian rapper's $1 million bet on Argentina in the final FIFA match failed on Sunday, after the game saw an even score of 3-3, with a final score of 4-2.
While Argentina eventually topped France in a shootout, the "Rich Flex" artist bet in a market where extra time isn't counted & the result is determined based on the score after 90 minutes of play, according to Vulture.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Drake showed users that he made the bet on Stakes & he would've earned $2.75 million if he had won.
Footage of Drake confirming his support for Argentina also appeared on social media, where 1 clip with a friend showed him saying "I'll take Argentina, he'll take France," while wearing Napoli gear.
By now, the Toronto-native rapper is likely used to losing bets in the sporting world, where some have even blamed game losses on the "Drake curse."
As of recent, Drake has struck out on large amounts of cash after betting on other matches.
Earlier this year, he lost a $2 million wager on a UFC fight after middleweight champion Israel Adesanya was defeated by Alex Pereira during UFC 281 on Nov. 12 in New York.
Drake also lost more than $200,000 in May after putting his money on Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc to win the Spanish Grand Prix.
Canadian sports fans also quipped at the rapper & his "curse" on social media after Team Canada was eliminated from this year's World Cup.
Ahead of the final 2022 World Cup match, Twitter users joked after learning Drake had placed his bet on Argentina, with some fearing his wager would jinx the team from winning.

AP — 5 Louisiana officers were charged Thursday with state crimes in the deadly 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene.
Facing the most serious charge was Kory York, who was seen on the body-camera footage dragging Greene by his ankle shackles, putting his foot on his back to force him down & leaving the heavyset man face down in the dirt for more than 9 minutes. The state police’s own force instructor called the troopers’ actions “torture & murder.” York was charged with negligent homicide & 10 counts of malfeasance in office.
The others who faced various counts of malfeasance & obstruction included a trooper who denied the existence of his body-camera footage, another who exaggerated Greene’s resistance on the scene, a commander who detectives say pressured them not to make an arrest in the case & a deputy heard on the video taunting Greene with the words “s—- hurts, doesn’t it?”
Greene’s May 10, 2019, death was shrouded in secrecy from the beginning. Authorities told grieving relatives that the 49-year-old died in a car crash at the end of a high-speed chase. An account questioned by both his family & an emergency room doctor who noted Greene’s battered body. Still, a coroner’s report listed Greene’s cause of death as a motor vehicle accident, a state police crash report omitted any mention of troopers using force.
Body-camera video remained so secret it was withheld from Greene’s initial autopsy & officials declined requests to release it.
Last year, the AP obtained the footage, which showed what really happened: Troopers swarming Greene’s car, stunning him repeatedly, punching him in the head, dragging him by the shackles. At times, Greene could be heard pleading for mercy & wailing, “I’m your brother! I’m scared!

In an intense 3-day 2014 trial in a Cape Cod courtroom, Justin Mustafa was accused of orchestrating a twisted week of drug-fueled torture in which he injected his girlfriend with heroin, repeatedly beat her with a belt & forced her to perform oral sex on his pit bull.
In June 2013, he picked her up from work & injected her with heroin. Over the next week, he did it several more times, she said. Rowland said when she was sick and high from the drugs, he would rape her and beat her with a belt. On one occasion, she said, he told her to undress then brought his pit bull in & forced her to give him oral sex.
"Based on what he has done to me & other women in my community, it's a matter of public safety," Gabbe Rowland told Insider.
In November, Rowland appeared by phone in Barnstable Probate and Family Court hearing objecting to the name change.
She told the court she believed that if Mustafa — now Justin Curtis — was allowed to change his name, women wouldn't be able to easily unearth his past.
Curtis, 33, testified that he converted to Christianity from Islam at the request of his mom & that Mustafa is a name with Islamic roots. His mother has since died & he wanted to change his name to avoid the "religious conflict."
On Tuesday, a judge ruled in his favor.
Because there were no formal sex-crime charges in her case against Curtis, he's not registered as a sex offender & so changing his name eliminates the most easily accessible link to the crimes he committed, Rowland said.

The father of Athena Strand, the 7-year-old Texas girl who authorities say was killed by a contracted FedEx driver, is suing her alleged killer, the parcel delivery company & the contractor that hired him.
Jacob Strand filed the lawsuit in Wise County alleging the companies were negligent in their hiring of Tanner Horner & that they "breached the duty of care."
He is seeking $1 million in damages & a jury trial.
"Our thoughts remain with the family of Athena Strand in the wake of this tragedy," a FedEx statement to Fox News Digital said. "We are aware of the complaint filed against FedEx Ground."
Horner, 30, is charged with capital murder & aggravated kidnapping in connection to Strand’s death.
He said he accidentally struck the girl with his delivery vehicle & strangled her in the van. He was delivering a package to Jacob Strand in Paradise, Texas, at the time.
Despite being hit by the van, Horner says Strand was okay, even able to talk after the incident & tell him her name. However, he apparently panicked & shoved Strand into his vehicle.
After attempting to break the girl's neck, Horner resorted to strangling Strand because he was concerned she might tell her father about the situation.
Two days later, the girl’s body was found less than 10 miles from her father’s property.
Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said the death penalty will be sought against Horner.

Noble Schools confirmed on Saturday that 2 of their students were among the four victims in a shooting just outside Benito Juarez Community Academy Friday afternoon that killed 2 teens & wounded 2 others.
Fire officials said police & paramedics responded to a shooting shortly before 3 p.m. at the school where 4 people were discovered with gunshot wounds.
According to police:
*A 14-year-old boy was struck to the head & taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead
*A 15-year-old boy was struck to the head & taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead
*A 15-year-old girl sustained a graze wound to the thigh & was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
*A 15-year-old boy was struck to the shoulder & thigh & was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
The 15-year-old boy who succumbed to his injuries has been identified as Brandon Perez.
Police said that no suspects were in custody or identified following the shooting.
Chicago Public Schools released the following statement Friday afternoon:
"The safety of our school community is our top priority. This afternoon, we received reports that shots had been fired outside of Benito Juarez High School shortly after dismissal. The Chicago Police Department & paramedics responded quickly to the scene. CPS remains in close contact with CPD & this incident is under investigation. The CPS Office of Safety & Security & other District leadership are working closely with school leadership and staff as well as CPD to gather information and respond to this incident. CPS will keep Benito Juarez families updated as well as the greater community. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy. We are providing crisis team resources to students & staff."

CHICAGO (AP) — The father of an Illinois man charged with killing 7 people in a mass shooting at a July 4 parade in a Chicago suburb has been charged with 7 felony counts of reckless conduct.
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said Robert Crimo Jr. surrendered to police on Friday & will have a bond hearing Saturday. Rinehart said the charges are based on Crimo sponsoring his then 19-year-old son’s application for a gun license in 2019.
“Parents & guardians are in the best position to decide whether their teenagers should have a weapon,” Rinehart said. “In this case, the system failed when Robert Crimo Jr. sponsored his son. He knew what he knew & he signed the form anyway.”
Rinehart wouldn’t further discuss what led his office to file the charges this week. Authorities have previously said the accused shooter, Robert Crimo III, attempted suicide by machete in April 2019 & in September 2019 was accused by a family member of making threats to “kill everyone.”
Both those reports came months before Crimo Jr. sponsored his son’s application in December 2019.
A grand jury in July indicted Robert Crimo III on 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 counts of attempted murder & 48 counts of aggravated battery, representing the 7 people killed & dozens wounded in the Highland Park attack.

A newly-elected state House representative from Barrow County was released from jail on bond Friday, but the charges against him multiplied from the time he was arrested on Thursday.
Daniel Edwin Rampey, 67, was initially arrested on 3 felony charges ranging from burglary to drug possession, but by Friday there were 19 felony counts filed against him.
Rampey, a Republican who was elected without opposition to the District 116 House seat, was released from custody on an $111,000 bond.
Rampey, who manages operations at the family-owned Magnolia Estates of Winder Assisted Living Center, faces numerous charges stemming from the alleged theft of prescription narcotics from a residence in the assisted living complex.
Among the warrants filed against Rampey are 6 burglary charges, 5 exploitation of an elderly person, 5 charges of obtaining a controlled substance by theft & 1 count of possession of a controlled substance.
The investigation that led to Rampey’s arrest began a couple of weeks ago, when the sheriff’s office received information about “suspicious activity involving missing medications.”
Sheriff Jud Smith said, “ We actually filmed him going into the residences & taking the items.”
Investigators served search warrants on Thursday at Magnolia Estates and at Rampey’s home in Statham, according to Smith.
Rampey was scheduled to take office at the state House on Jan. 9. The status of his 2-year term could not be determined Friday.
