HONOLULU (Associated Press) — A 16-year-old boy stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii on Sunday, surviving the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean unharmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen, FBI and airline officials said.
FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.
"Kid's lucky to be alive," Simon said.
Simon said security footage from the San Jose airport verified that the boy from Santa Clara, Calif., hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. The child had run away from his family after an argument, Simon said. Simon said when the flight landed in Maui, the boy hopped down from the wheel well and started wandering around the airport grounds.
"He was unconscious for the lion's share of the flight," Simon said. The flight lasted about 5½ hours.
Hawaiian Airlines spokeswoman Alison Croyle said airline personnel noticed the boy on the ramp after the flight arrived and immediately notified airport security.
"Our primary concern now is for the well-being of the boy, who is exceptionally lucky to have survived," Croyle said.
Simon said the boy was medically screened and found to be unharmed.
"Doesn't even remember the flight," Simon said. "It's amazing he survived that."
His misadventure immediately raised security questions. A Congressman who serves on the Homeland Security committee wondered how the teen could have snuck onto the airfield at San Jose unnoticed.
"I have long been concerned about security at our airport perimeters. #Stowaway teen demonstrates vulnerabilities that need to be addressed," tweeted Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat who represents the San Francisco Bay Area's eastern cities and suburbs.

"Our concern is with this young boy and his family. Thank God he survived and we hope his health is OK," spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.
Officials at Kahului Airport referred questions to the State Department of Transportation, which did not return a phone call seeking comment. A Transportation Security Agency spokesman who declined to be named referred questions to the FBI and airport authorities.
The boy was released to child protective services and not charged with a crime, Simon said.
In August, a 13- or 14-year-old boy in Nigeria survived a 35-minute trip in the wheel well of a domestic flight after stowing away. Authorities credited the flight's short duration and altitude of about 25,000.
Others stowing away in wheel wells have died, including a 16-year-old killed after stowing away aboard a flight from Charlotte, N.C., to Boston in 2010 and a man who fell onto a suburban London street as a flight from Angola began its descent in 2012.

New York City hot spots Club W.i.P. and Greenhouse may never open again and being raided by cops and shut down over the weekend, according to the New York Post.
Both clubs share the same liquor license, which expires at the end of the month. The owners have not applied for a new one.
W.i.P. was the scene of Drake and Chris Brown's June 2012 champagne throwing brawl.
In December, Mob Wives star Natalie Guercio, reportedly bashed a woman over the head with a bottle at Greenhouse.
Police are looking to question South Carolina NFL prospects Victor Hampton and Kelcy Quarles following an April 11 brawl at Greenhouse that left alleged victim, Michael Hauer, needing facial surgery.
“There’s always something crazy happening there,” said a hostess from a nearby restaurant. “There’s always police outside. Every night there’s police outside. It’s just kind of standard.”
The clubs were shut down on Saturday for being overcrowded and for playing music louder than the legal limit. The club's manager, Geano Mark Fassett, was cited with a violation and must appear in court.
Owners of the establishments have not commented.

15-year old Brooklyn, New York teen Isaiah Martinez is lucky to be alive this morning after getting shot Saturday, April 19, while attempting to buy a pair of the $250 Kanye West-designed Nike Air Foamposite Pro “Yeezy” sneakers.
Winesses say Martinez cut a long line of customers waiting to buy the shoes at a Brooklyn Foot Locker.
“There were people camped out for the sneakers and Isaiah tried to cut the line,” Martinez's friend, Edison Cartagena, told the New York Daily News. “They get into a scuffle and one of the guys on line left and told Isaiah he was coming back with a gun. He came back and just fired off four shots. He probably shot him in the foot just to scare him off. I don’t think anyone should lose their life over a pair of sneakers. Thankfully he’s okay. The whole thing is just crazy.”
Martinez was reportedly taken to Woodhull Hospital with a nonlife-threatening injury.
Another witness said the shooting was the result of Martinez talking trash and today's violent youth who shoot first and ask questions later.
“I guess he tried to get tough with one of the guys he cut,” said Jayson Roque. “One of them left and came back with a gun and shot him.That’s the generation we got now. They shoot each other over shoes.”

Christopher Hollosy
In what could be a bad omen for Chris Brown, his bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, has been found guilty in his Washington D.C. assault case, according to NBC New York.
Brown and Hollosy are both accused of punching Parker Adams outside of the W hotel last October. The victim suffered a broken nose. He claims that he simply wanted a picture with the singer. Brown says the man tried to board his tour bus without permission, forcing his bodyguard to take care of the problem.
Brown denies punching the fan. Both Hollosy and Brown were charged with misdemeanor assault in the case.
The judge in Hollosy's case ruled Monday that Hollosy "was not justified" in hitting the 20-year old victim. He will be sentenced on June 25.
Brown has much more at stake in his trial, which is set to begin today. In addition to having to serve six months in a D.C. jail if found guilty, he could also face significant prison time in Los Angeles for violating his probation stemming from his 2009 assault of Rihanna.
Parker Adams' lawyers have also filed a civil suit against the singer seeking $3 million for pain, suffering and doctor's bills.

Dame Dash doesn't usually involve himself in other people's conflict's, but on Sunday, April 20, the business mogul offered his take on the 50 Cent vs. Steve Stoute beef.
Dash uploaded a photo on his Instagram account of 50 confronting Stoute at Madison Square Garden earlier this year and wrote some less than flattering things about the record executive.
Ha!...Steve Stout stays getting punked....but I have to agree with 50 on this one...he is one of the most dangerous people in our culture...he makes artist from our culture make themselves corny by working for corperate so he can personally gain...he's wack and he makes everyone around him look wack...beware.

TORONTO (Associated Press) — Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the boxer whose wrongful murder conviction became an international symbol of racial injustice, died Sunday. He was 76.
He had been stricken with prostate cancer in Toronto, the New Jersey native's adopted home. John Artis, a longtime friend and caregiver, said Carter died in his sleep.
Carter spent 19 years in prison for three murders at a tavern in Paterson, N.J., in 1966. He was convicted alongside Artis in 1967 and again in a new trial in 1976.
Carter was freed in November 1985 when his convictions were set aside after years of appeals and public advocacy. His ordeal and the alleged racial motivations behind it were publicized in Bob Dylan's 1975 song "Hurricane," several books and a 1999 film starring Denzel Washington, who received an Academy Award nomination for playing the boxer turned prisoner.
Carter's murder convictions abruptly ended the boxing career of a former petty criminal who became an undersized middleweight contender largely on ferocity and punching power.
Although never a world champion, Carter went 27-12-1 with 19 knockouts, memorably stopping two-division champ Emile Griffith in the first round in 1963. He also fought for a middleweight title in December 1964, losing a unanimous decision to Joey Giardello.
In June 1966, three white people were shot by two black men at the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson. Carter and Artis were convicted by an all-white jury largely on the testimony of two thieves who later recanted their stories.
Carter was granted a new trial and briefly freed in 1976, but sent back for nine more years after being convicted in a second trial.
"I wouldn't give up," Carter said in an interview on PBS in 2011. "No matter that they sentenced me to three life terms in prison. I wouldn't give up. Just because a jury of 12 misinformed people ... found me guilty did not make me guilty. And because I was not guilty, I refused to act like a guilty person."
Dylan became aware of Carter's plight after reading the boxer's autobiography. He met Carter and co-wrote "Hurricane," which he performed on his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1975.
Muhammad Ali also spoke out on Carter's behalf, while advertising art director George Lois and other celebrities also worked toward Carter's release.
With a network of friends and volunteers also advocating for him, Carter eventually won his release from U.S. District Judge H. Lee Sarokin, who wrote that Carter's prosecution had been "predicated upon an appeal to racism rather than reason, and concealment rather than disclosure."
Born on May 6, 1937, into a family of seven children, Carter struggled with a hereditary speech impediment and was sent to a juvenile reform center at 12 after an assault. He escaped and joined the Army in 1954, experiencing racial segregation and learning to box while in West Germany.
Carter then committed a series of muggings after returning home, spending four years in various state prisons. He began his pro boxing career in 1961 after his release, winning 20 of his first 24 fights mostly by stoppage.
Carter was fairly short for a middleweight at 5-foot-8, but his aggression and high punch volume made him effective.
His shaved head and menacing glower gave him an imposing ring presence, but also contributed to a menacing aura outside the ring. He was also quoted as joking about killing police officers in a 1964 story in the Saturday Evening Post which was later cited by Carter as a cause of his troubles with police.
Carter boxed regularly on television at Madison Square Garden and overseas in London, Paris and Johannesburg. Although his career appeared to be on a downswing before he was implicated in the murders, Carter was hoping for a second middleweight title shot.
Carter and Artis were questioned after being spotted in the area of the murders in Carter's white car, which vaguely matched witnesses' descriptions. Both cited alibis and were released, but were arrested months later. A case relying largely on the testimony of thieves Alfred Bello and Arthur Bradley resulted in a conviction in June 1967.
Carter defied his prison guards from the first day of his incarceration, spending time in solitary confinement because of it.
"When I walked into prison, I refused to wear their stripes," Carter said. "I refused to eat their food. I refused to work their jobs, and I would have refused to breathe the prison's air if I could have done so."
Carter eventually wrote and spoke eloquently about his plight, publishing his autobiography, "The Sixteenth Round," in 1974. Benefit concerts were held for his legal defense.
After his release, Carter moved to Toronto, where he served as the executive director of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted from 1993 to 2005. He received two honorary doctorates for his work.
Director Norman Jewison made Carter's story into a well-reviewed biographical film, with Washington working closely alongside Carter to capture the boxer's transformation and redemption. Washington won a Golden Globe for the role.
"This man right here is love," Washington said while onstage with Carter at the Golden Globes ceremony in early 2000. "He's all love. He lost about 7,300 days of his life, and he's love. He's all love."
But the makers of "The Hurricane" were widely criticized for factual inaccuracies and glossing over other parts of Carter's story, including his criminal past and a reputation for a violent temper. Giardello sued the film's producers for its depiction of a racist fix in his victory over Carter, who acknowledged Giardello deserved the win.
Carter's weight and activity dwindled during his final months, but he still advocated for prisoners he believed to be wrongfully convicted.
Carter wrote an opinion essay for the New York Daily News in February, arguing vehemently for the release of David McCallum, convicted of a kidnapping and murder in 1985. Carter also briefly mentioned his health, saying he was "quite literally on my deathbed."
"Now I'm looking death straight in the eye," Carter wrote. "He's got me on the ropes, but I won't back down."
