Jay-Z Rocks NYC For Sold Out 9/11 Concert

Concert Video And Pics After The Jump Newsday Reports Jay-Z's ambitious plan to remix America's feelings about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks began with a star-studded benefit Friday night at Madison Square Garden that balanced reverence with revelry. "They believed would weaken us," Jay-Z said, introducing "Run This Town," which featured Kanye West and Rihanna in one of her first public appearances since her troubles with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. "They were sorely mistaken . . . We stand here tonight even stronger." For Jay-Z - whose first "Blueprint" album was released on Sept. 11, 2001, and who wanted the release of "The Blueprint 3," which he says is the last in the series, to come out on Sept. 11 as well - crafting the "Answer the Call" benefit was a way to take control of a tragedy that made so many, including himself, feel powerless. The concert was designed to celebrate the extraordinary acts of heroism and the spirit of unity that sprung up because of the attacks. Jay-Z wanted to connect to the positive aspects of 9/11 rather than dwelling on the negative. "We're celebrating life tonight," Jay-Z said. All proceeds from the concert will go to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund, which also hopes to use the publicity from the show to let more people know about the charity. Jay-Z got some high-profile help from wife Beyoncé, who performed "Diva," West, Santigold and Kid Cudi, as well as John Mayer, who supplied guitar riffs on "D.O.A." But it was Jay-Z that fired the crowd up, with a mix of new and old, dedicating "99 Problems" to the terrorists and "Heart of the City," which became a massive sing-along. "There's a lot of love in here tonight," Jay-Z said.

No charges to be filed against Shawne Merriman,Tila Tequila's case dismissed by DA

Miami Herald Reports The San Diego district attorney's office has reportedly decided against filing charges against Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman for allegedly choking and restraining his girlfriend, MTV star Tila Tequila. The San Diego Union-Tribune posted a statement from district attorney Bonnie Dumanis saying that her office "determined there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that any crime was committed." The report also says the case is now closed. The paper reported last Sunday that Tequila -- the star of a former reality show on MTV, whose real name is Tila Nguyen -- signed a citizen's arrest complaint that charged the linebacker with battery and false imprisonment. Deputies went to Merriman's home just before 4:00 a.m. in response to a disturbance call. Tequila reportedly told them she was choked, thrown to the ground and restrained by Merriman upon attempting to leave. Merriman was then released from custody just after 11:00 a.m. The 25-year-old Merriman is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and was named First-Team All-Pro in 2006, when he led the league with 17 sacks. Merriman, the 12th overall pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, has spent his entire four-year career with San Diego. He missed all but the first game last season because of a knee injury that required surgery.

Inspired By The Death Of Kanye West's Mom,California Passes New Medical Bill, The "Donda West Law"

HipHopWired Reports The California Senate passed a bill Thursday inspired by the death of Kanye West's mother. If approved by California GovernorArnold Schwarzenegger, the “Donda West Law” would “prohibit performance of electronic cosmetic facial surgery unless, within 30 days before the procedure, a physical examination is conducted and written clearance for surgery is provided.” The lawmaker primarily responsible for the bill, Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter, believes the bill will save lives. She told the L.A. Times: “Sometimes patients may think they are well enough for cosmetic surgery, but in reality are not. This bill will potentially save lives." Donda West passed away in 2007 at the age of 58 from complications with cosmetic surgery. While she did not have “electronic facial surgery,” West went under the knife for a tummy tuck and breast reduction, allegedly without having a proper physical beforehand. She ultimately died from preexisting coronary and multiple postoperative factors following surgery.

Mom Too High To Drive Puts Six Year Old Daughter Behind The Wheel

Video After The Jump Source : HipHopWired The mother of a 6-year-old got too high to drive after she smoked "that stinky stuff" and asked her daughter to take the wheel. The 30-year-old mother was arrested on Sunday after police noticed the child driving a Dodge Durango at South Fourth Avenue and Walnut Street. "There were two white knuckles and a little head popping over the steering wheel," he said. Allegedly the woman was laughing in the passenger seat when the police pulled the car over. She went on to tell the officer she was trying to teach her daughter how to drive. "Mom made me drive because she was sleepy," the girl told police. The police said the aunt asked the little girl if her mom had been smoking "that stinky stuff again" and she replied "yes." The woman is being held in Chester County Prison on child endangerment, corruption of a minor and reckless endangerment charges.

Mannie Fresh Launches New Label, Signs Distribution Deal

AllHipHop Reports Acclaimed producer Mannie Fresh will seek to take his label Chubby Boy Records to greater heights via a newly-inked distribution deal with Deep Entertainment. The deal represents Fresh’s plan to solidify his talents as a Hip-Hop producer while showcasing his diversity in other genres of music. As a label, Deep Entertainment has slowly been making a name for itself in Hip-Hop culture due to its successful distribution of DJ Drama’s popular Gangsta Grillz mixtape series. Mannie Fresh’s first rumored project will be Return of the Ballin’, which will serve as a follow-up to his 2004 debut The Mind of Mannie Fresh. Fresh was instrumental in the explosion of Southern Hip-Hop through his tenure as Cash Money Record’s in-house producer from 1993-2005. In that span, the New Orleans native’s beats were a staple of hit albums from Juvenile (400 Degreez ), Lil Wayne(Tha Block It Hot, Tha Carter ), B.G. (Chopper City in the Ghetto ), The Hot Boys (Guerrilla Warfare ), and the Big Tymers (Hood Rich ). Realizing that labels have to be forward-thinking and daring in their marketing due to the ever-evolving music climate, Deep Entertainment Public Relations Director Nicole Murray plans to make Fresh a part of their proposed “independent music revolution.” Deep Entertainment is a rising star among independent labels,” explained Murray to AllHipHop.com in a statement. “Boasting the ability to pair creative, outside-the-box distribution channels as well as the traditional methods of retail and digital release with a full set of in house services including marketing, radio promotions and publicity, Deep Entertainment is revolutionizing the way independent music is released and received by the market place.” Fresh’s Return of the Ballin’ is currently set for an October release. Afterward, the label expects to debut new acts from Fresh’s Chubby Boy label. At press time, it is unknown if Fresh has retained his previous label deal with Def Jam South.

Ghostface Killah Announces Tour Dates In Support Of New Album "The Wizard of Poetry"

AllHipHop Reports Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah will drop his sixth album for Def Jam titled The Wizard of Poetry on September 29 and has announced a nationwide outing to support his latest release. Ghostface, aka Ghostdini, lined up an all-star cast for The Wizard of Poetry. The album features guest appearances by Fabolous, Estelle, John Legend, Raheem DeVaughn and Lloyd. The album features two bonus tracks as well. “She’s A Killah” features Ron Browz, while “Back Like That” features Ne-Yo and Chicago rapper/producer Kanye West. Ghost's 24-date tour kicks off October 2 and hits major cities throughout the United States, including Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco and Denver, Colorado. Sporting a hooded frock and her famous Barracuda glasses from A-Morir, the Disturbia singer rubbed elbows with fashion’s finest on New York Fashion Week’s inaugural evening. Rihanna caused so much of a uproar during her five-minute lap around the trendy retailer that one fan knocked over a rack, causing a bag to fall over and hit another patron on the head. Meanwhile, Rihanna — who most recently has been linked to rapper and label mate Fabolous – will make her way to L.A. this weekend to tend to a jam-packed agenda. After spending Saturday rehearsing for Monday’s performance on the premiere of The Jay Leno Show alongside Jay-Z and Kanye West, Riri will undoubtedly glam things up once again for Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards.

T.I. and Chris Brown Star In New Movie “Takers”

HipHopWired Reports Although on lockdown, “The King Of The South” has no plans of slowing down and keeping his name ringing in the ears of the masses. T.I. is set to star in the film Takers alongside Matt Dillon, Chris Brown and Idris Elba. The film is a crime thriller about a Los Angles detective that is on the verge of diffusing a plan made by thieves who are trying to carry out a $20 million heist. Takers is set to theatres on January 8th. Originally titled Bone Deep, T.I. is also serving as one of the executive producers of the film. Here's the poster for the upcoming film.

Drunk Mom Drives Son To Wrong School,Stops To Ask Cop For Directions & Gets Arrested

Kare11.com Reports A Detroit-area mother was arraigned on Wednesday after she was accused of driving her 9-year-old son to school while drunk. Dena Gay Ellington, 45, of Birmingham, was arrested Tuesday morning in Ferndale. Police said she stopped to ask a police officer at Taft Education Center how to get to her son's school, Coolidge Elementary. The officer said he smelled alcohol on her and gave her a Breathalyzer test. The woman blew a .29 percent, which is more than three times the legal limit. "Very unusual circumstances, that time of the morning, a woman being that drunk," said Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson. "The fact that she approached him after drinking, and asking him how to drive further, is probably an indication that she wasn't thinking clearly." The officer drove the woman to the Ferndale Police Department and another officer drove the boy to school. Family members picked up the boy from school later that day. "Had she found the grade school she was looking for, there would have been kids running all over and all sorts of bad things could have happened," Wilson said. Ellington was released on a $5,000 bond. If convicted, she could be sentenced to time in prison. The magistrate has ordered her to undergo daily Breathalyzer tests. Ellington has no criminal history.
