Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith nearly lost his leg because of a flesh-eating bacteria that developed after he had surgery to repair the compound fracture he suffered during a game against the Houston Texans in November 2018.
In a first-person story told to ESPN's Stefania Bell, Smith's wife, Elizabeth, recalled doctors discovering her husband was suffering from "necrotizing fasciitis" and had a rare bacteria called Aeromonas hydrophila in his bloodstream that is usually found in freshwater or brackish water.
“He became septic, he had bacteria in his blood,” says Dr. Robin West. “We were in surgery every day for five to six days straight. Within a couple of days we were talking about an amputation to save his life.”
The change in his leg was rapid, with Elizabeth noting one of the doctors unwrapped Alex's surgical bandages to discover his leg was black with "huge" blisters after saying it "looked normal" just a few hours earlier.
Smith was injured when he was sacked by Kareem Jackson and J.J. Watt in the third quarter of Washington's 23-21 loss on Nov. 18, 2018.
Per Thom Loverro of the Washington Times, in October 2019, Smith revealed at the Inova Sports Medicine event he needed 17 surgeries on his leg, with nearly half of them dedicated to removing tissue due to the infection he suffered.
At one point in the process, doctors said Alex's injury was "more comparable to a military blast injury."
Smith sat out the entire 2019 season to rehab, but he told Jeremy Schapp of Outside the Lines (h/t Bell) in February that he hopes to resume his football career.
"There's enough there that I can go out there and play. ... Knowing that, yeah, failure is a possibility. ... I need to prove that I can come back and play quarterback in the NFL, and if I can do that, that would be great and it'll get figured out," he said.
Smith is under contract with Washington through the 2022 season. He threw for 2,180 yards, 10 touchdowns and a 61.5 completion percentage in 10 games during the 2018 season.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida -- It’s definitely not a Common excuse.
A Florida man told police that guns in his car belonged to John Wick, according to a police report obtained by The Smoking Gun.
Getro Gelin, 27, was being investigated for domestic violence Sunday after a woman told police that Gelin had threatened her with a gun, The Smoking Gun reported.
Police later searched Gelin’s Porsche and found a handgun, a semi-automatic rifle and a bulletproof vest, the police report said. Such an arsenal would have fit right into one of the films starring Keanu Reeves.
Officers asked Gelin why the guns were in his car, but Gelin was light years ahead of them with his excuse: He told the cops that he’d recently sold the car to his cousin John Wick.
After officers called this obvious bluff, Gelin admitted to that he did not actually have a cousin named John Wick but refused to give an actual name.
Gelin was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery.

Additionally, he teams up with some of the prolific legends in the rap game such as Large Professor, Kool G Rap, Sadat x, and El Da Sensai. From rocking on stages from New York to Overseas, Reap is recording a full-length lp with Belgian producer Chillow Deriuew (from NY to BE). The production has a smooth jazzy feel to accommodate Reap’s raspy smooth flow with a few hard cuts, as well with features from M-Dot, Nutso, and more. Returning to NY with a newfound determination, Reap immediately hits the studio with producer and engineer, Jay Superior to start working on "The Naturaw." The 10-track lp is available on vinyl with productions from Large Professor, Buda Da Future and Grands, Seth Silinsir, and Jay Superior.
Reap Raw lands on radio shows on Sirius XM such as Dj Eclipse’s "Rap is Out of Control" and Dj Premiere's "Live from Headquarters." Reap feels like half the battle was won when one of his favorite producers is scratching up his song. The grind doesn’t stop there though, continually recording preparing for further music releases is paramount, in one-word passion is how I describe my feeling for hiphop and music period.
Reap Raw reunites with Chillow Deriuew in NY to shoot a video for the single called "Technology." "It was something very different from everything else we have done, this is the energy I look for, to stand out amongst the crowd," says Reap. "Technology" is a song based on its advancements (technology) as a metaphor or comparison to the constant elevation of Reap’s lyricism.
There are no boundaries to where Reap Raw will take it - music and visual wise. The next step is already in motion. Reap says "To all my supporters and fans-the the love can’t be reciprocated enough! See you when we get there." PEACE

Miami like most cities ha been grappling with the effects of the Coronavirus. The usually teeming city known for it’s vibrance and energy has ground to a halt in an effort to slow the spread of the virus via social distancing measures. Rapper Cheflodeezy is hoping for the return of life to his beloved city and is choosing to let the creative juices flow
during the difficult time for the city. Choosing to release his newest single “Koockin &
Juggin”. The high energy trap infused single is Deezy’s first of the year with a
continuous stream of releases planned as the year progresses.
The single written and performed by Deezy is semi-autobiographical and chronicles some of Deezy’s favorite pastimes as well as laying out some of Miami’s unspoken street code. The single is assisted with a beat production from producer Ace Bankz. The single is broadly available on May 1st, 2020.
Cheflodeezy is a Jamaican born Miami based artist. Deezy moved to Opa Locka, Miami at the age of 9 where he lived with his mom and younger brother. Deezy found his love for music as a teenager at Miami Central High, when his best friend at the time introduced him to the beat making platform Fruity Loops. After high school, Deezy fell into the street
life. By the age of 21 he had multiple arrests, struggled with homelessness and the loss of
a few close friends to gun violence. After almost being incarcerated for undisclosed cases
and the birth of his first child llamiyah, Deezy decided to change his life.
He went to culinary school and pursued a career as a professional chef. This is where he got the nick name “Cheflodeezy”. He free-styled and had other students listen to his music on a daily basis. After graduating culinary school, Deezy began to climb in the hospitality industry. Cheflodeezy started to literally blow up in the culinary word where he
was featured in SoHo House world magazine as a rising star on Deco drive, and cooking
for various celebrities on visits. Never letting his love for music die, Cheflodeezy went to
recording studios on his days off and wrote music before and after work on most days.
Still dream chasing and dropping music weekly, Cheflodeezy does this for the love of the
craft.

(CNN) NBA superstar Michael Jordan may have retired years ago, but his off-court appeal remains as strong as ever.
The former Chicago Bulls star has largely stayed out of the limelight since he walked away from basketball nearly two decades ago. So much so, he once turned down a jaw-dropping amount of money for a two-hour appearance at an event, his former agent said this week.
David Falk appeared on WFAN's "Boomer and Gio," where he discussed how picky his famous client was when it came to projects.
"I brought him a deal three years ago for $100 million. All he had to do was, other than giving his name and likeness, make a one two-hour appearance to announce the deal and he turned it down," Falk said Wednesday, without providing any additional details on the deal.
"God bless him. He's been so successful, it gives him an opportunity to do whatever the hell he wants or not to do things he doesn't want. I really admire that. He's very, very selective in the things he wants to be involved in."
Jordan made headlines last month after his documentary "The Last Dance" was released. The ESPN series premiered on April 19 and will air on Sunday nights over five weeks through May 17.
The 1990s Chicago Bulls, led by Jordan, remains one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. The ESPN series features never-before-seen footage from the 1997-98 season, along with interviews from a star-studded cast.

Federal prosecutors have filed murder and other charges against a man accused of killing a letter carrier in Indianapolis after his mail was suspended because of an aggressive dog.
U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler's office charged Tony Cushingberry-Mays with second-degree murder, assaulting a federal employee and discharging a firearm during a crime, according to court documents filed Wednesday.
Cushingberry-Mays, 21, was arrested Tuesday night in the shooting that killed Angela Summers.
When Summers bypassed Cushingberry-Mays' home about 4 p.m. Monday, authorities say he confronted Summers on a neighbor's porch and demanded the mail.
Summers sprayed Cushingberry-Mays with mace, authorities said, and then he shot her.
Cushingberry-Mays was with his attorney Tuesday night when he admitted to shooting the letter carrier, according to the documents.
"He stated the letter carrier was not delivering the mail because she was having a problem with the dog at his residence," Postal Inspector Joseph J. De St Jean wrote in the complaint.
Mail delivery had been suspended because of an aggressive dog at Cushingberry-Mays' home, according to the criminal complaint.
Summers passed Cushingberry-Mays' home without dropping off the mail on Monday.
Cushingberry-Mays approached Summers on his neighbor's front porch, standing about 6 feet away, and repeatedly asked her for the mail.
"He said the letter carrier turned around, grabbed her mace spray and sprayed (him)," De St Jean wrote.
"Cushingberry-Mays then pulled his handgun from the right side of his waistband ... and fired one shot."
Summers, 45, was fatally shot Monday afternoon as she delivered mail in the 400 block of North Denny Street, a neighborhood near East Michigan Street and North Sherman Drive.
