LOS ANGELES (AP) — California authorities said Friday they have dismantled the senior leadership of the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood as part of a statewide takedown of the notorious prison gang and its associates in the Fresnecks street gang in Fresno County.
The investigation — dubbed “Operation Lucky Charm” because the Aryan Brotherhood’s symbols include a shamrock — includes federal and state charges for more than 100 defendants in California, Nevada and Montana. Half of the suspects were arrested Thursday in California and others remain at large.
Authorities in a news conference Friday said they were able to foil 11 violent crimes, including murder and robbery, in part through wiretaps. The Fresnecks worked on the streets under the direction of the Aryan Brotherhood, which was founded in California’s San Quentin State Prison in 1964, through contraband cellphones in state prisons.
“We got up on their phones and we listened to the crimes being ordered and carried out in real-time,” said McGregor Scott, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California.
Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said investigators were also able to stop contraband from getting into state prisons, including a case where suspects were reportedly going to stuff a football with cellphones and drugs and throw it onto prison property.
Authorities have also seized 47 firearms, 89 pounds (40 kilograms) of methamphetamine, 5.75 pounds (2.6 kilograms) of heroin and $136,156 in cash throughout the investigation, which began federally in August 2019. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California also brought other charges against suspected Aryan Brotherhood members about 18 months ago.
Law enforcement authorities allege the violent criminal organizations have “significant resources” that members use to buy and sell guns and drugs. The members are also accused of perpetrating murders, home invasions, kidnappings, large-scale identity theft and fraud, as well as other violent crimes within Fresno County and across California.
“These two gangs pose a real threat to the peace and safety of our communities — not just in Fresno County but throughout the state of California,” State Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Friday.
Police executed 26 search warrants and 65 arrest warrants on Thursday in five counties, officials said. Fifty people were arrested and authorities found guns, methamphetamine, heroin and more than $40,000.

President Donald Trump retweeted a series of bizarre videos and messages by Randy Quaid, including one where the actor alleged voter fraud and another in which he attacked Fox News.
The first video that Trump retweeted Tuesday was a video Quaid originally posted more than a year ago.
“Is this the way America goes? From George Washington to George Soros? From oceans white with foam to a socialist swamp," Quaid says in the video as he sits backwards on a wooden chair.
"Is this the way America goes? Is this really our future? Wake up you sleeping giant, the lilliputians have tied you down with their fantastic dreams of icebergs melting into dinosaurs and train tracks stretching across the Pacific waters. Trump trumpets reveille and it's time to heed the call."

— Randy Quaid (@RandyRRQuaid) October 12, 2019
Quaid ends the two-minute-long video by shouting, “A day of reckoning is nigh! Wake up!”
The president then tweeted "No!" as he reposted a Nov. 21 message from Quaid that read: "I just don’t see Americans rolling over for this election fraud. Do you?"
Quaid's tweet and several others shared by the president on Tuesday were flagged by Twitter for making claims that were disputed.
"Thank you Randy, working hard to clean up the stench of the 2020 Election Hoax!" another tweet by Trump read in response to Quaid calling him the "greatest President this country has ever had."
Trump also shared a video in which Quaid used a creepy voice to recite one of the president's tweets attacking Fox News.
"Fox News daytime ratings have completely collapsed, weekend daytime even worse. Very sad to watch this happen," Quaid says in the video as colorful lights flash across his face. "They forgot what made them successful, what got them there. They forgot the Golden Goose. The only difference between the 2016 election and 2020 is Fox News."
Clearly, Randy Quaid is not ok. pic.twitter.com/IGGQaPgOcg

Quaid is perhaps best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies. He also appeared in "The Last Detail" in 1973, in which he was nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award.
In 2015, the actor and his wife were arrested after they tried to cross into the United States from Canada. Quaid was wanted in California on felony vandalism charges filed five years prior after he and his wife were found squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned.
The president's retweets come as Trump continues to contest the election results, which saw Joe Biden become President-elect.
Trump has filed numerous lawsuits in the wake of Biden's Nov. 7 win and made false accusations of voter fraud. Despite the president's refusal to concede, the head of the General Services Administration informed Biden on Monday that the official governmental transition process has been approved.

HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. government has agreed temporarily not to deport detained immigrant women who have alleged being abused by a rural Georgia gynecologist, according to court papers filed Tuesday.
In a motion that must still be approved by a federal judge, the Justice Department and lawyers for several of the women agreed that immigration authorities would not carry out any deportations until mid-January.
Dozens of women have alleged that they were mistreated by Dr. Mahendra Amin, a gynecologist who was seeing patients from the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Georgia. The Justice Department is conducting a criminal investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general is investigating as well. Amin has denied any wrongdoing through his lawyer.
Several women say they have faced retaliation by immigration authorities for coming forward. One woman has said that hours after she spoke to investigators, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement notified her that it had lifted a hold on her deportation. Another woman was taken to an airport to be placed on a deportation flight before her lawyers could intervene.
The agreement filed in court Tuesday proposes that no deportations would take place until at least mid-January for women who have “substantially similar factual allegations.”
Elora Mukherjee, a Columbia University law professor working with several of the women, said the agreement gives the women “a measure of protection for trying to expose the abuses there.”
“ICE and others at Irwin thought they could silence these women,” she said. “They thought they could act with impunity and nothing would ever happen. But the women have organized and had the audacity to speak out.”
ICE said Tuesday that it “complies with all binding court orders.” The agency has previously denied allegations that it tried to deport women to silence them, saying in a written statement: “Any implication that ICE is attempting to impede the investigation by conducting removals of those being interviewed is completely false.”
Scott Grubman, a lawyer for Amin, did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.
The allegations were originally revealed by a whistleblower complaint. Further investigations have found several examples of Amin performing surgeries on women who later said they didn’t consent to the procedures or didn’t fully understand them.
Grubman has denied any wrongdoing by the doctor and previously described Amin as a “highly respected physician who has dedicated his adult life to treating a high-risk, underserved population in rural Georgia.”

Kim Kardashian West is using her celebrity and legal connections to help a death row inmate who is currently in a battle to stave off execution.
Kim came face-to-face with Julius Jones in Oklahoma City Monday. Jones, a black man, was 19 when he was arrested for the shooting death of a 45-year old white man named Paul Howell in 1999. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2002 and sentenced to death.
Sources familiar with the meeting tell us Kim spent time with both Jones and his attorney, Dale Baich, and promised to do whatever she could to assist his legal team. After the meeting with Jones, Kim met with some of his family members at a local church.
During the meeting at the church, we're told Jones' mother got emotional in recounting the night of Howell's murder ... and said Julius was home with her the whole time.
Our sources say, Kim became interested in Julius' case after watching "The Last Defense" in 2018 -- a Viola Davis produced docuseries about his arrest and his trial. Kim also helped to push a Change.org petition in support of Julius from a couple hundred thousand signatures to millions.
Many who have been critical of Julius' case say it was racially charged from the beginning with little evidence to tie him to the scene and a poor legal defense. Julius has also stated he believes he was framed for the murder and didn't fit the appearance of suspect given by Howell's sister ... who stated it was a young black man with a red bandana.
Jones filed a petition for clemency in 2019 and is now waiting on The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board to recommend his sentence be commuted and reduced ... a final decision would then fall with Governor Kevin Stitt.
Jones does not yet have a scheduled execution date.

Ricky Schroder's getting so much hate for helping accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse make bail, he reported it to cops ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell us ... deputies responded to a call from Schroder Sunday and stopped by his home to review various negative social media posts directed at the "NYPD Blue" actor.
While they weren't life-threatening, some of the comments were pretty nasty ... "Tbh thought he was dead. Would've been better," "This was a racist move pure and simple," and "Ricky Schroder can shove that silver spoon right up his own ass."
Celebs including Bette Midler weighed in too, saying, "Who knew he could be so malevolent?"
We're told cops determined none of the online comments rose to the level of a criminal threat ... so the officers just took a suspicious circumstances report and left.
Our sources say Schroder will be in contact with authorities if things escalate, and we're told police are monitoring the situation.
As we reported ... Schroder donated $150k to the 17-year-old's bail fund, which the teen's attorney, Lin Wood, said helped them post $2 million bail to get Rittenouse out of jail while he awaits trial for murder.
Some of the outcry is obviously harsher than others ... but you get the idea.
As for Rittenhouse ... he's accused of shooting and killing 2 men and wounding a third during the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. He's claiming he acted in self-defense.
