Chris Harper Mercer

Video After The Jump

(Reuters) The Oregon sheriff investigating the execution-style killing of at least nine people in a college classroom refused to identify the suspect on Friday, saying he wanted to deny the shooter notoriety, the ultimate prize he sought in the bloodshed.

A day after the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, residents of the quiet former timber town struggled to comprehend the deadliest mass killing this year in the United States. The gunman also wounded seven people in the rampage and died in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Law enforcement sources confirmed reports identifying the suspect as Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who lived with his mother in nearby Winchester.

In a blog post linked to him, Harper-Mercer said he relished the headlines garnered by Vester Flanagan, the man who shot dead two reporters during a live broadcast in Virginia in August before killing himself.

"A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone ... Seems the more people you kill, the more you're in the limelight," the post read.

In a highly unusual step, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin vowed never to utter the gunman's name and said he would let the coroner identify the gunman.

"I don't want to glorify his name. I don't want to glorify his cause," Hanlin, an outspoken defender of gun ownership, told CNN. The gunman stormed into a classroom at the college that serves mostly older students in career transitions, shot a professor at point-blank range, then ordered cowering students to stand up and state their religion before he shot them one by one, according to survivors' accounts.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown declined in television interviews on Friday morning to discuss gun control, as did the sheriff, and said it was a time for healing the community.

A month after the December 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Hanlin wrote a letter to Vice President Joe Biden that defended the right to bear arms, protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"Gun control is NOT the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings," Hanlin wrote in the letter, dated Jan. 15, 2013.

Just hours after Thursday's shooting, a visibly angry President Barack Obama urged Americans to press their elected leaders to enact tougher firearms safety laws.

"Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here, at this podium, ends up being routine," he said. "We’ve become numb to this."

In a photo posted on what was believed to be the suspected gunman's MySpace profile, a young man with a shaved head and dark-rimmed eyeglasses stares into the camera while holding a rifle.

A man identifying himself as Ian Mercer, the gunman's father, told reporters outside his home in Los Angeles on Thursday night, "It's been a devastating day, devastating for me and my family."

Authorities offered no motive for the shooting. Hanlin said local homicide detectives and federal agents were conducting an investigation.

Not counting Thursday's incident, 293 mass shootings have been reported this year, according to the Mass Shooting Tracker website, a crowd-sourced database kept by anti-gun activists that logs events in which four or more people are shot.

Warren Sapp has struck a plea deal in the attack on former girlfriend Chalyce Moore at the M Resort in Vegas on April 28th.

He was arrested in June and charged with 3 counts of domestic violence. Prosecutors agreed to drop two of the charges in exchange for Sapp pleading guilty.

The judge in the case fined Sapp $345 and ordered him to pay $2,555 in restitution, log 48 hours of community service and six months of counseling and stay out of trouble for six months, according to the Associated Press.

In addition he must keep his distance from the victim, prosecutor Lisa Luzaich said. He faces six months in jail if he violates terms of the deal.

TMZ Sports reports that the 42-year old Hall of Famer allegedly threw a margarita at Moore at the M Resort. Things escalated on the drive back to her condo when Sapp bit Moore's middle finger while they argued.

When the two arrived at the condo, Sapp, allegedly knocked Moore to the ground, then stepped on the right side of her face, giving her a possible concussion.

In Lil Mouse's hometown, shooting deaths have appeared in the news more than ever before. Innocent victims seem to lose their lives on a daily basis, and around certain holidays, the city of Chicago continues to lose dozens. "Everybody ain't getting money, that's what's making it bad," says Lil Mouse during this exclusive clip.

When asked if he has to keep security detail around him when in Chicago, Lil Mouse says "I keep them with me regardless, everywhere I go," since getting murdered "could happen to anybody." Fortunately the young rapper hasn't lost a friend during Chi-town's deadly Summer, something he says happens more so because of people "not having nothing else to do." "That's Chicago for you," he adds.

Watch as he speaks on his city's violent acts and talks about his upcoming "mixtape for the ladies" entitled Life Of a Young Boss, below.

Bill Cosby could be facing criminal charges after the LAPD handed the District Attorney it's case of an alleged sexual assault against Chloe Goins.

Goins claims that in 2008 Cosby spiked her drink with drugs while at the Playboy Mansion. She reportedly blacked out and later woke up half naked to find the comedian licking her toes with his pants down around his ankles.

She was 18-years old at the time.

12351775891?profile=original

Out of the dozens of women who have accused Cosby of committing nefarious acts ranging from rape to sexual assault, Goins case stands out because it is the only one that falls within the statute of limitations for possible prosecution.

According to TMZ, Cosby's reps deny he was there at that time.

It's now up to the D.A. to decide whether or not Cosby will face charges.

Adrien Broner (30-2) has found much success in the boxing ring. By the age of 23 he had become a three-division world champion.

However, he has suffered two losses recently. Marcos Maidana handed "The Problem" his first defeat on December 4, 2013, in a grueling 12-round battle.

His June 20, 2015, match against Shawn Porter resulted in his second loss by unanimous decision.

Some have cited the Cincinnatti native's hard partying lifestyle outside of the ring as one reason Broner hasn't yet realized his full potential.

12351774869?profile=original

As he prepares to fight #5 ranked light welterweight Khabib Allakhverdiev on Saturday, October 3rd, the now 26-year old Broner promises that he has rededicated himself to the sport.

"I've already accomplished a lot at a young age, but I have so much more to do," he told Showtime, the network that will broadcast his bout against Allakhverdiev. "Floyd [Mayweather Jr.] is gone. Boxing is up in the air. A new era will start October 3rd. This next half of my career I'm gonna be the AB that's about business and about boxing. I will be four-time world champion in four different weight classes."

Do you think Broner is now ready to take over boxing as many predicted he would just two years ago?

(CNNPreliminary information indicates 10 people were killed and more than 20 others injured when a gunman opened fire at Oregon's Umpqua Community College on Thursday, said Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate.

Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice told CNN that the shooter is in custody. It was not immediately clear whether the shooter was injured.

Investigators are examining social media postings made by a man, thought to be in his late 20s, who they believe is the suspect, said a source with knowledge of the investigation.

The night before the attack, the alleged shooter appears to have had a conversation with others online about his intentions, the source said.

"We arrived to find multiple patients in multiple classrooms. Law enforcement was on scene and had the shooter neutralized," Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler told CNN.

He said that two patients died while being transported to a hospital.

The shooting appears to have started in one building before the gunman moved to the school's science building, the source told CNN. Those killed and wounded were found in at least two classrooms.

Mercy Medical Center posted on Twitter that it had received nine patients, with three more on the way. The extent of their injuries was not known.

Three victims arrived at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, about 70 miles north of the shooting scene. Two more are on their way, that hospital tweeted.

ATF agents were also on scene and canine teams are en route to search for explosives, fire arms casings and ammunition, a spokesman said. The FBI was en route.

'This is so out of character'

Earlier, authorities had said they were responding to reports of an active shooter at the Roseburg college campus.

Roseburg is a city of about 22,000 people located about 70 miles south of Eugene, Oregon, and some 180 miles south of Portland.

The school itself is up on a hill outside the city center, according to Rick Francona, a CNN military analyst who lives nearby. Francona said that logging is a big industry in the region, which is fairly rural but easily accessible from Interstate 5.

"This is so out of character for this whole area," he said.

News of the shooting quickly reached Washington, with the state's senior senator, Ron Wyden, visibly shaken and Sen. Jeff Merkley tweeting that he was praying for the victims and their families.

President Obama was briefed on the situation and will continue to receive updates throughout the day.

The school

A picturesque campus in the North Umpqua River Valley, the school prides itself on a "a peaceful, safe atmosphere, and year-round recreational activities," according to its website.

It's not a traditional institution of higher learning, as the average age of its 13,600 students was 38 during the 2013-2014 school year. Only 740 of those were full time, 2,437 were part time and more than 10,000 fell under the umbrella of "community education."

It first began teaching classes out of rented facilities in 1961. Elton and Ruth Jackson donated 98.5 acres to house the campus in 1965.

There are rumors of a Scarface and Ice Cube joint album floating around, which the Houston legend addressed during an exclusive interview with VladTV. He made the collaboration seem like a possibility, telling us, "We're both on that independent shit right now."

Speaking more about Ice Cube, Scarface addressed World Class Wreckin' Crew founder Alonzo Williams telling VladTV that the "No Vaseline" emcee was a "good actor" when it came to his gangster status. When asked about Williams' comments, Scarface admitted that while he believes Cube is a genius writer, he never believed that he was a true gangster.

The conversation also touched on ghostwriting in hip-hop, which Scarface had two viewpoints about. When the question was first presented to him, the "On My Block" emcee pointed out that Beyonce and Taylor Swift, two of the biggest artists today, have people write their songs. However, Scarface said he would be very upset if he found out Rakim or Kool G Rap didn't write their own rhymes.

To hear more of what Scarface had to say during our sit-down, check the clip below.
