Lamar Odom still has a long way to go as he fights for his life. But for the first time since being hospitalized he's showing signs of improvement.
TMZ reports that there is reason for optimism after doctors at the Las Vegas hospital where the 35-year old former NBA player is being cared for ran tests Friday, October 16th, that show his heart function is "much better."
It had been previously reported that 4 major organs, including Odom's heart, were failing. Doctors say that the improvement is a good sign.
Odom remains in a coma. Physicians are stressing that he needs "calm" around him because non-stimulation promotes healing.
They are limiting the amount of people being allowed in his room. Odom's estranged wife, Khloe Kardashian, has remained by his bedside.
As we previously reported, Odom found unresponsive Tuesday, October 13, following a weekend of partying at Dennis Hof'sLove Ranch South in Pahrump, Nevada.
Lamar Odom is out of a coma and responsive, according to new reports by several media outlets, including E!Online and USA Today.
Odom's former college coach, Jim Harrick, told USA Today that Khloe Kardashian texted him the encouraging news.
“She reached down and said ‘you know I love you’ and he kind of nodded,” Harrick said during a phone interview. “Three or four days after being scared to death and fearing the worst, that is a little hope, a little progress. She texted me that (information).”
The former NBA Sixth Man of the Yearis breathing on his own, speaking and functioning, E!Online reports.

Lamar Odom is currently comatose in a Las Vegas hospital fighting for his life. But that didn't stop NBA player J.R. Smith and rapper Lil Wayne from sending out social media messages on Wednesday, October 14th, that he had already passed away.
“RIP LO damn man I can't believe this,” Smith wrote on Instagram. "If this isn't a sign I don't know what is!!! This life is so much bigger then basketball an any other sport! I can't imagine what he was going through but I know he could have had some better people in his corner! Life doesn't care how much money you made or how man championships you have when its time to go it's time to go! Some people say ‘it's easy to be happy you have millions!’ With all the money that comes trust an believe it comes with just as much heartache! Learning a balance is key never get to high on the highs an never get to low on the lows! #RIPLO."
Wayne followed that up with his own tweet sending condolences to Odom's family and friends.

Slim Jesus shook things up in hip-hop earlier this year after telling VladTV that he doesn't live the life he raps about, which Montana of 300 shared his thoughts on during a recent interview. The Chicago rapper said while some people see Slim Jesus as being fake, Montana believes that he's actually being more honest than other rappers by speaking his truth.
The "Play Doe" lyricist also spoke about his upcoming collaboration with Slim Jesus, which he admitted wasn't quite finished yet. When asked about who reached out first, Montana said after getting so many tweets linking both himself and Slim Jesus, he decided to send the Ohio rapper a message with his number.
As far as the status of their upcoming song, Montana said Slim Jesus is just waiting on his verse.
Late last year, Beyonce Knowles' father Mathew caused a media frenzy after he was suspected of selling his superstar daughter's memorabilia for money. We recently caught up with the former brains behind the Beyonce empire, and he's says it's absolutely stupid to believe such rumors.
"I think people are smart enough to know that if I needed some money, what would I make more of? Selling a $5 t-shirt? Or look behind me," he says, pointing to the Destiny's Child plaques. "Would I make more by selling maybe this plaque, and getting maybe $10,000? I mean if I really needed money I think I probably could generate at least $100-200,000...But I wouldn't do that."
Mr. Knowles then goes on to talk about the several buildings he owns around Houston, Texas - the Knowles' family's hometown - and how one of them contained lots of memorabilia collected over the years from several artists, including Beyonce. According to Mathew, it was actually his staff's idea to sell said things , as some of them wanted it to be a part of their Christmas bonuses. "Of course you gotta understand probably 5% of this stuff was Destiny's Child, Beyonce records - 95% of this stuff was furniture and old electronics. It was a garage sale - no more, no less," he explains.
Dennis Hof, the owner of Love Ranch South in Pahrump, Nevada, where Lamar Odom was found unconscious on Tuesday, October 13th, made an appearance on the Nancy Grace show on Wednesday night. But not before Khloe Kardashian tried to prevent him from talking about the incident.
"I got a call from the Kardashians' publicist today saying 'Are you going to do any media?' And I said 'Yes I'm going to go on the Nancy Graceshow." And she said 'please don't do that, we'd rather have Khloe say what needs to be said'. I told her to go to hell," Hof said.
Lamar is still in a coma following the incident. Doctors have given him a 50/50 chance for survival.
Why do you think Khloe is trying to control what is being said about her ex-husband's tragic situation?
