BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department are investigating a shooting that took the life of a toddler late Tuesday, April 12.
Police said Devin Page Jr., 3, was hit by a stray bullet while lying in bed. Investigators added he died at the scene.
A spokesman with BRPD said the shooting happened on Fairfields Avenue near North Foster Drive just after 11:00 p.m.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Mayor Sharon Weston Broome is calling for peace following the tragedy. She issued the following statement:
“The tragic overnight killing of a young child on Fairfields Avenue is a sad reminder that our community has a long way to go in addressing gun violence. This tragedy is beyond unacceptable. Someone in our community knows who is responsible and they must come forward. At this moment our community needs to refocus. Beginning Good Friday I am calling for a Week of Peace. Week over week community members join together in planning activities of hope, but there is a small percentage that still continue to choose violence. I implore individuals to settle their disputes with words rather than with violence. The outcomes from choosing violence are never hopeful. Choose hope and choose peace.”
Devin’s family is having a memorial balloon release for him at Sherwood Park on North Sherwood Forest Drive at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. The family has also set up a GoFundMe to cover his funeral expenses. You can donate to it by clicking here https://www.gofundme.com/f/devin-page-memorial-fund

In this clip, Benzino addresses a video clip that recently surfaced of him getting into a heated exchange with the cops. The Boston native explains that the video was about five years old before getting into the gritty details about what his life was like during that time period. The 56-year-old states that he hit a low point in his life back then, largely because one of his exes took his son with her to California and he was not doing well, financially. Lastly, Benzino sets the record straight about his sexuality and gives context to why he was spotted at a hotel with another man.

Back in the day, so to speak, Alvin L. Giles was putting out tons of music on YouTube and working closely with R&B and soul artist Cody ChesnuTT – touring the world as his music director and working as the principal arranger for his critically acclaimed album Landing on 100.
He even worked as pianist and lead musician on the song “What Does Freedom Mean” for the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film “Twelve Years a Slave.”
Then he became a father and his focus shifted to being a good provider and dad.
Now, 10 years since his last release hit the shelves, the artist known as Giles is reintroducing himself to the world with his stirring new single “Alive” and a chorus that borrows from the colloquial expression it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.
“When I wrote the song it was really a message to myself because I needed the encouragement,” he says. “When you’ve stepped away from your dreams and passions for 10 years, even if you’re doing it for a noble cause like taking care of your family, it’s a mighty blow. I’m trying to step back into the ring and reconnect with my old fans. I needed something in my head to click and that’s what this song was for me.”
As he debated what song to release for his coming back party, war broke out in Ukraine and Giles knew the single had to be “Alive.”
“You are here, you persist, you’re alive,” he sings in the chorus. “Despite fear, you resist, and you thrive.”
“We’re all coming out of a pandemic, we’re all survivors in a sense and there’s war, there’s suffering,” he says.
It’s an impressive debut, with Giles “really spitting” and showcasing his lyricism, songwriting and musical chops. Every bass note plucked, every hi-hat and drum beat – everything is 100 percent him. He composed the song; wrote the hooks, the chorus, the harmonies and engineered the recording, only bringing in a fresh set of ears for mixing and mastering.
“You really get an overdose of what Giles has to say and has to bring musically, sonically,” he says. “This is not my only style but this song encapsulates something that I think is quite unique. A lot of times you have people who excel in one particular area. They might be a fantastic producer but they need a ghostwriter or they’re a fantastic lyricist but they can’t write a song. I have my fingers on the pulse of the music. I’m not just thinking about what bars I’m going to rap, I’m thinking about what keyboard licks I’m going to play and what bass riffs. You get a pure view of my vision.”
He calls it purposeful intention, because Giles wants listeners to hear his raw vision and know that every note was placed intentionally. There are no opportunities for his music or message to get lost in translation.
Placing Giles’ music in a specific genre is a difficult task because he excels in multiple styles. It’s hip hop, it’s indie rock – it’s even been compared to Seal. He studied jazz piano in college at Florida A&M and the fact he was chosen to play piano on a major motion picture soundtrack, curated by John Legend, speaks to his talent.
“Alive” is his first shot, he says, but the gun is fully loaded and Giles is putting fans of indie hip hop and people who resonate with his message on notice that he’s not going anywhere this time.
“My kids are older, I’ve done what I need to do financially to make sure my family is in a good place with or without my recording career,” he says. “Now I’m in a position to take no prisoners and that’s exactly what I intend on doing.”
Giles will release more singles throughout 2022, all sharing the same meticulous planning, and there’s one thing he hopes rings true: as an independent army of one, stack him up against your favorite major artist and their team of writers, producers, and musicians to see who comes out on top and it’s not going to be an easy win for them.
A South Florida corrections officer has been arrested after authorities said he plotted with undercover detectives to bring contraband items like cocaine & a gun into a prison & tried to arrange to have someone murdered.
Jose D. Alcazar, 49, was arrested Monday in Hialeah Gardens on numerous charges including solicitation of murder, cocaine possession, possession of a controlled substance, criminal solicitation, introducing a phone into prison, introducing a weapon into prison & unlawful compensation for official behavior.
The investigation into Alcazar, an officer at the South Bay Correctional Facility in Palm Beach County, began in January after a confidential informant told investigators Alcazar was bringing contraband into the facility.
Investigators learned Alcazar would pick up cocaine & other contraband items on the weekend to bring into the facility & set up an undercover operation using an investigator who posted as the informant's nephew.
In March, investigators arranged to have Alcazar bring three SIM cards into the facility in exchange for $1,200.
At the time of the exchange, Alcazar said he wanted to have a man killed & the undercover investigator told him he'd look into it.
When they spoke again earlier this month, Alcazar told the undercover investigator he needed a revolver small enough that he could take it into the correctional facility.
When they met up on Monday, Alcazar told the officer he could have his "uncle," the confidential informant, moved to a different facility in exchange for $10,000.
During the meeting, Alcazar gave the officer a container of cocaine in exchange for $1,900, with $400 going toward the cocaine & the rest a down payment on the $10,000.
Alcazar & the undercover officer also discussed the murder Alcazar wanted done.
"I just wanted to make sure you want the victim disappeared," the officer asked Alcazar.
A short time later, Alcazar was taken into custody & booked into the Miami-Dade jail.
In court Tuesday, a prosecutor said Alcazar wanted his girlfriend's husband murdered.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors revealed Monday evening that they offered plea deals to three former Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting the murder of George Floyd, but said at a hearing that the defendants rejected them.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill held the hearing mostly to consider whether he has the authority to allow live video coverage of the upcoming trial set to begin in June for former Officers Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng. They’re charged with aiding and abetting both manslaughter and murder when former officer Derek Chauvin used his knee to pin Floyd, a Black man, to the pavement for 9 1/2 minutes on May 25, 2020. Kueng knelt on Floyd’s back, Lane held his legs and Thao kept bystanders back.
Lead prosecutor Matthew Frank did not disclose details of the plea offers in open court but said they were identical and were made March 22 after a jury convicted the three in a separate trial in February on federal civil rights charges stemming from Floyd’s death, according to pool reports from inside the courtroom.
Lane’s attorney, Earl Gray, said it was hard for the defense to negotiate when the three still don’t know what their federal sentences will be. The judge in that case has not set a sentencing date, and all three remain free on bail.
Cahill told Frank to file the offers for the record after the jury is seated for the upcoming trial, which is expected to take around eight weeks, including three for jury selection.
Cahill took the rare step of allowing live audiovisual coverage of Chauvin’s murder trial last year, making an exception to the normal rules of Minnesota courts. He cited the extenuating circumstance of the need to balance protecting participants from COVID-19 against the constitutional requirement for a public trial.
Now that the U.S. has entered a new phase of living with the coronavirus, Cahill must decide whether to allow the same sort of access for the trial of Thao, Lane and Kueng. He did not rule during their pretrial hearing, and said he won’t until after the Minnesota Judicial Council — a panel of leading judges and court administrators — meets Thursday to discuss the issue.
Attorney Leita Walker, who represents a coalition of media organizations, including The Associated Press, urged Cahill to allow video coverage again, saying it’s the most reasonable way to ensure public and media access to the trial. She said the public got to watch Chauvin’s trial, and that interest remains high because both involve Floyd’s death. The killing, which was recorded on video, sparked protests around the world and a national reckoning on race.

WASHINGTON CITY, Utah — A woman has been arrested in connection with the deaths of two brothers who she allegedly hit while driving under the influence Saturday afternoon.
Julie Ann Budge, 47, was booked into the Washington County Jail on 2 felony counts of automobile homicide, 2 felony counts of DUI with serious bodily injury, 2 felony counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident & 1 misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
Police say Budge 2 men on bicycles on Telegraph Street in Washington City. Matthew Bullard & Adam Bullard, who were participating in the "Spring Tour of St. George" timed bike ride, died from their injuries.
When officers responded to the scene, Budge reportedly told them she had "various medical issues" & had began uncontrollably defecating herself without warning. She said this caused her to swerve & hit the Bullards, who she said she didn't see. She also said they were stopped, although police said they were riding westbound in the bike lane. Budge was going in the same direction & she said she couldn't get her car to stop after the crash until it died several hundred yards from the crash site.

SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- At least 13 people were shot or otherwise hit by shrapnel on multiple subway stations along the northbound N train line in Brooklyn Tuesday morning.
Now, a manhunt is underway for a gunman described as wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest.
It appears at this time to have happened on the train, beginning at the 25th Street station. As the doors closed, the suspect threw smoke bombs and started shooting.
The victims then got off the subway train at the 36th Street station.
At least four of the victims were found at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park and another at the 25th Street station in Greenwood Heights just before 8:30 a.m.
Police were looking at as many as four packages initially deemed suspicious, but they were later determined to be unfounded.
The victims were being taken to Maimonides Medical Center, Kings County Hospital and other hospitals.
The suspect was described as a Black male, 5-foot-5 and 175 to 180 pounds.
No arrests have been made, and schools in the area went into a lockdown as the search continues.
An FBI official says they are assisting NYPD and that it remains unclear at this point whether there is any connection to terrorism, but FBI headquarters is monitoring.

Kodak Black is killing 3 birds with one stone in Jada Pinkett Smith -- both slamming her and asking her out at the same time ... while also dissing the late Tupac Shakur.
The rapper was unfiltered this weekend as he shared his thoughts on the whole situation -- namely, how he appears to perceive Jada and Will Smith's relationship ... and he seems to be on Will's side, saying Jada's been doing him dirty without getting too specific.
While it's unclear what exactly he's referring to when he says she's "out of pocket," there are many possibilities ... including a recently resurfaced 'Red Table Talk' clip in which she says she didn't really want to get married to Will, with her hubby sitting right there.
It's about as awkward as it sounds ... even though WS himself doesn't seem to be too bothered by the convo, as he joins in and also reminisces on those early days.
Still, it's just one of many clips that have surfaced in the past couple weeks that some point to as proof that their relationship is ... sorta strange, and maybe even a little toxic. At least from the outside looking in, anyway. And Kodak, too, thinks he senses some choppy waters.
That's exactly why he says Jada doesn't deserve a good guy like Will, but rather ... should be with him instead. His rationale isn't totally laid out -- but he invokes Pac to make his point.
KB says Pac wasn't "all the way gangster" his whole life ... bringing up the fact that Tupac went to a performing arts school in his early days. On the flip side, Kodak seems to think he's more thugged out than Tupac, and perhaps a better fit for her than Will might be.
Of course, Jada still brings up Tupac to this day -- and while she's insisted they were never more than just really, really good friends ... some have said her constant harkening back to his memory is weird, especially as it relates to Will. Mr. Bill apparently agrees!

A woman who was accused of helping the MS-13 gang kill four young men on Long Island in 2017 has been found guilty on all counts, federal prosecutors said Monday. Leniz Escobar was convicted in connection with her participation in the April 11, 2017 murders of Justin Llivicura, Michael Lopez, Jorge Tigre & Jefferson Villalobos.
Escobar, now 22, faces up to life in prison when she is sentenced.
Escobar, also known as "La Diablita" or "Little Devil," allegedly lured five men to a park in Central Islip to smoke marijuana. When they got there, the victims were attacked by gang members with machetes, knives, an axe & wooden clubs.
One ran off, but the other 4 were killed. Prosecutors say the MS-13 members believed the victims were "members of a rival gang, at least two of whom had disrespected the MS-13 by posting photos on social media."
The 4 victims — who were between the ages of 16 and 20 — were found hacked to death with what police described as "significant trauma" wounds.
In the days following the murders, prosecutors allege Escobar "bragged to other MS-13 members about her role in the killings" & discussed the attack in detail in recorded calls with her boyfriend.
Prosecutors also say Escobar destroyed evidence of her involvement in the murders by disposing of a sweatshirt stained with a victim's blood and tossing her cell phone from a car while being followed by the police.
More than a dozen MS-13 members and associates have been charged in connection with the 2017 killings.
