A former Alabama jail official and the murder suspect she is accused of helping escape from custody were apprehended Monday in Indiana after more than a week on the run, law enforcement officials said.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton of Alabama said the two fugitives were caught near Evansville, Indiana, after U.S. Marshals pursued their pickup truck. Casey White, 38, surrendered and Vicky White, 56, was taken to a hospital, the sheriff said.
“This has ended a very long and stressful and challenging week and a half. It ended the way that we knew it would. They are in custody,” Singleton said.
In Indiana, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said officials had learned that their vehicle was near the sheriff’s office. As officers arrived, Casey and Vicky White fled in the vehicle and led police on a pursuit, he said. U.S. Marshals collided with them “to try to end the pursuit,” he said. Casey White was injured, not too seriously, in the ensuing crash and Vicky White then shot herself, causing “very serious” injuries, he said.
“We’re lucky that no law enforcement was injured no innocent civilians were injured. The pursuit was short in nature and we have both people in custody,” Wedding said.
The two had been the target of a nationwide manhunt since April 29 when Vicky White, the assistant director of corrections for the jail in Lauderdale County, allegedly helped engineer the escape of Casey White, who was awaiting trial in a capital murder case. Vicky White had told co-workers she was taking the inmate from the jail for a mental health evaluation at the courthouse, but the two instead fled the area.
Casey White was serving a 75-year prison sentence for attempted murder and other charges at the time of his escape.
“We got a dangerous man off the street today. He is never going to see the light of day again. That is a good thing, for not just our community. That’s a good thing for our country,” Singleton said.
A warrant was issued on May 2 for Vicky Sue White charging her with permitting or facilitating escape in the first degree.
“This escape was obviously well-planned and calculated. A lot of preparation went into this. They had plenty of resources, had cash, had vehicles,” the sheriff said.

SPRING, Texas – Harris County Precinct 4 constables said a woman confessed to killing her husband in a jealous fit of rage Saturday morning, but another woman has come forward to KPRC 2 saying that she, not the accused, is the victim’s actual wife.
Karin Tricia Stewart, 51, has been charged with murder.
The tragedy began to unfold when deputies were dispatched to a residence around 2:21 a.m. They arrived to find a man, James Hargrove, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim was rushed to Houston Northwest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Stewart, who is 51 years old, allegedly told investigators the victim was her husband & that she shot him after he told her he was in love with another woman.
Stewart was taken into custody & booked into the Harris County Jail. Her bond has been set at $75,000.
On Monday, during Stewart’s court appearance, a woman who identified herself as Sandra Hargrove told KPRC 2 that she is the victim’s real wife, not Stewart. Hargrove said in an interview that she received a call from her stepson, telling her that her husband had been shot to death.
Hargrove said she came to Stewart’s first court appearance to find out what happened to her husband.
Hargrove said she & the victim have been legally married since 2009 and recently separated in November, but still were in contact every other day. She said she was not aware of any relationship he had with Stewart or any other woman.
Hargrove said she is shocked at what happened, adding that, from her knowledge, Stewart was only his caregiver. She said that her husband had recently recovered after being in the hospital with COVID-19 for several months.
“He’s still my husband,” Hargrove said tearfully. “I mean, we have grandkids, we have kids, we have nieces & nephews. That’s still my husband.”
She said she and her family want justice.
“Even when we separated -- we didn’t cause he was my best friend,” Hargrove said.

Former Michigan State star Adreian Payne was shot & killed in Orlando, Florida, early Monday morning, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Payne, who was the 15th pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft, was 31.
A man named Lawrence Dority has been arrested for the shooting on a first-degree murder warrant.
Payne was a member of the All-Big Ten second team in 2 of his 4 seasons (2013, 2014) with Tom Izzo's squad. He averaged 16.4 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Spartans & led the team to the Elite Eight in the 2013-14 season.
Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, who was Payne's teammate for two seasons at Michigan State, tweeted broken heart emojis.
The 6-foot-10 standout played 4 seasons in the NBA with multiple teams. In 2018, he was waived by the Orlando Magic after he was named in a report that stated he had been involved in an alleged sexual assault at Michigan State in 2010. No charges were filed in that case.
Payne never played in the NBA again but spent the last few years of his career overseas.
During his time at Michigan State, Payne befriended an 8-year-old girl with cancer named Lacey Holsworth, who became an inspiration for him and the team. Holsworth helped the team cut down the nets when it won the Big Ten tournament in 2014. Weeks later, Holsworth died.
In September, Payne tweeted that he was taking a break from basketball because his 4-year-old son Amari had to undergo a brain procedure. He said basketball was not as important as his family.

YG is off the hook for an alleged robbery in Sin City ... his criminal case was just dismissed on the morning of jury selection.
Sources close to the rapper tell TMZ ... YG settled out of court with the alleged robbery victim, and the guy was no longer interested in cooperating with prosecutors in the criminal case.
TMZ broke the story ... YG was facing a felony robbery charge for allegedly yanking a dude's chain off his neck in a 2018 altercation at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, before making off with the diamond-laced pendant.
We're told YG maintained he never stole the chain from the man, though he admitted the bling snapped off when the two were in a fight.
YG’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, tells TMZ … "Justice was served expeditiously, we would've had the same result if the case went to trial."
It's not the first time something like this has happened ... as we first told you back in January, prosecutors in Los Angeles declined to file charges against him because there wasn't enough evidence to link him to another alleged robbery.

Rapper Yung Joc spent a morning in jail after was arrested on Thursday (May 5).
According to The Jasmine Brand, the artist born Jasiel Amon Robinson, was pulled over for speeding when police soon discovered that he was driving on a suspended license. The license suspension was the result of an active arrest warrant out on the rapper.
He was taken into custody around 3:00 A.M. before posting a $1,300 bond with $45.00 in fees at 5:03 A.M., after being booked at the Gwinnett County Jail in Lawrenceville, Georgia, inmate records show.
While the reason behind the arrest warrant was not officially reported, The Jasmine Brand reports that the former Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star was booked and charged with “abandonment of a dependent child.”
The “It’s Goin’ Down” rapper has eight children with four different women.
This isn’t the first time that he has gotten into trouble regarding one of his children. In related news, he and his oldest son Amoni Robinson, got into an argument while filming an episode of Love & Hip Hop in 2021.
HotNewHipHop reports that the heated exchange was a result from one of Amoni’s friends getting Joc’s nightclub, The Venue, shutdown in 2019.

Elon Musk thinks the Russian government is out to get him -- maybe kill him -- and he's exposing the threat he received that supports his theory.
Elon just tweeted, "If I die under mysterious circumstances, it's been nice knowin ya."
As for what prompted the tweet, a guy named Dmitry Rogozin, Chief of Russia's Space Agency, sent a statement to Russian media accusing Elon of assisting Ukraine in Russia's brutal war against the country.
Rogozin accused Elon of being "involved in supplying the fascist forces in Ukraine with military communication equipment."
And then, the ominous warning ... “And for this, Elon, you will be held accountable like an adult – no matter how much you’ll play the fool.”
As for linking Rogozin's statement to Elon's tweet, it's pretty obvious ... Elon tweeted 6 minutes after Rogozin released his statement.
Elon's SpaceX Starlink terminals are now being used by Ukrainian forces to keep the Internet and therefore communications strong as Russia tries to disable it. It's a critical link in fighting the war.

Gone but never forgotten. Far Rockaway, Queens, New York emcee Lionel Pickens aka Chinx was finally getting his just due and had begun his ascent to the top of the game when he tragically lost his life on May 17, 2015.
He left behind a great legacy from his days with fellow Riot Squad members Stack Bundles, Bynoe and Cau2g$. Chinx would later link up with French Montana's Coke Boy's crew.

A Florida man was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for hiring one of his friends as a hitman to kill his pregnant wife in order to collect on her life insurance policy during the summer of 2017.
Euri Jenkins, 35, was convicted by Palm Beach County jurors of murder in the first degree over the murder-for-hire plot that took the life of 33-year-old Makeva Jenkins.
“This has been a long struggle for me & what has happened to my daughter has affected my life & the life of my family,” the victims’ grandmother, Glora Harold, told the court before addressing the killer and the outcome of the proceedings. “I have nothing bad to say about him. All I wanted was justice for my child. Nobody wins in the case.”
On June 29, 2017, gunman Joevan Joseph, 24, broke into the couple’s Lantana, Fla. home. Wearing a mask, he shot the mother of 3 in the head while she slept. Joseph was 1 of 3 men arrested in connection with the doubly deficient scheme to reward murder.
The violence would all be for naught. The 3 men were, of course, unsuccessful in covering up their crime after the fact. Euri Jenkins would only later learn, in the weeks after his wife’s murder, that he was not listed as a beneficiary on her $500,000 life insurance policy.
The third man, Dametri Dale, 23, began the state’s case against the defendant by testifying that he arranged the meeting between the since-convicted husband and the man who carried out the plot. Dale previously agreed to a plea deal on charges of murder in the second degree as a cooperating witness. He received 15 years probation for his efforts after turning himself in last month.
Joseph’s sentencing hearing was postponed until after his testimony in Euri Jenkins’ murder trial. The shooter faces a minimum or 5 & a maximum of 20 years behind bars. He also previously pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree for his role in the killing.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) - Police in South Carolina are investigating an assault that involved an elementary school student and an assistant principal.
WCSC reports the Charleston Police Department responded to an incident at Drayton Hall Elementary School on Tuesday.
An assistant principal at the school told officers she was assaulted by a student, according to a police report.
She said she pulled an 11-year-old student out of class to clean up a mess he made in the boy’s bathroom. An argument then ensued with the student cursing at her, striking her in the face, and kicking her.
Investigators said they saw red marks near the eye of the assistant principal, and she was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
According to the police report, the student told officers he did not make the mess in the boy’s bathroom, and he was tired of the assistant principal telling him what to do.
Police asked the student if he felt the assistant principal deserved it, and he reportedly told them she did and that he did not feel bad about it.
Another staff member at the school also told officers that she had been assaulted by the same student recently. The report stated that bruising was seen on the staff members’ arms.
Police said no arrests had been made because of the students’ age, but they are working with the assistant principal to see if any charges will be filed.

A Michigan man is being sued after a technician who didn't know how to drive a stick shift accidentally killed a mechanic from behind the wheel of the defendant's car.
Although Sergio Enrique Diaz-Navarro wasn't behind the wheel of the Jeep Wrangler on that day in March 2020, the family of the employee who was killed is suing him for negligence & is hoping to receive more than $15 million in damages.
Jeffrey Hawkins, 42, a father of four who worked as a mechanic, was killed when 19-year-old Daniel Thompson, a lube technician, attempted to operate the vehicle after the service was finished. Thompson started the vehicle because he was trying to ensure there were no leaks in the car's filter, but the car then lunged forward & crushed Hawkins.
"Thompson reached into the vehicle and pressed brake with his right foot, keeping his other foot on the floor," read the court documents. "He pressed the start button. When the vehicle did not start, he took his foot off the brake & depressed the clutch pedal. He again hit the start button. This time the Jeep started. He removed his foot from the clutch, still standing outside the vehicle. The vehicle lurched forward."
Hawkins's family also filed a lawsuit against Thompson in 2021.
Michigan law makes it difficult for a coworker to sue a boss over that because it occurred at work — despite the fact that the Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership owner hired someone who didn't have a driver's license or know how to drive a car with manual transmission. The family is left with little recourse other than targeting Diaz-Navarro, whose insurance company has already doled out $100,000.
Diaz-Navarro is considered liable for giving his keys to the dealership because of a vicarious liability law in the state that holds that owners are automatically liable for the negligence of drivers — a principle that could extend to mechanics, valet attendants & others.
"When you hand your car over to anybody, including the valet or the person at the service desk at your local dealership, you better be able to trust that person," a lawyer for Diaz-Navarro said.
In a separate lawsuit, Diaz-Navarro won indemnity from the dealership, meaning that the dealership will ultimately be on the hook for the bill if a court determines that he was indeed liable. The dealership is expected to appeal that decision.
"So in reality, the owner is going to be held responsible, but the dealership’s insurance company is paying," Femminineo said.
The case involving the lawsuit against Diaz-Navarro will head to trial at the end of May.

At least Chris Rock has a sense of humor about the slap heard around the world.
The comedian and actor hasn't given an extensive interview about being assaulted by Will Smith at this year's Oscar Awards, but he did joke about it recently.
Rock came onstage at the recent "Netflix Is a Joke" comedy show to check on Dave Chappelle after an audience member tackled him ... and the two of them had a hilarious exchange.
“At least you got smacked by someone of repute!” Chappelle joked to Rock, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I got smacked by a homeless guy with leaves in his hair.”
Rock laughed and responded, “I got smacked by the softest n----a that ever rapped.”

While the man accused of charging at Dave Chappelle during a live performance Tuesday night appears to have escaped felony charges, Chappelle may be facing civil liabilities over his attacker’s injuries, a legal analyst said Thursday.
Chappelle was finishing up his Netflix is a Joke show at the Hollywood Bowl when 23-year-old Isaiah Lee allegedly ran on stage with a weapon and assaulted the controversial comedian.
Chappelle’s security team apparently tackled the attacker, who was later taken away from the venue on a stretcher with an apparent arm injury & bruises on his face.
“Believe it or not, Dave Chappelle & his team may be facing some civil liabilities when all of the dust settles,” legal analyst Alison Triessl said.
“If the threat was over & he was no longer a danger, & had been restrained, they can not take revenge on Mr. Lee,” Triessl said.
TMZ has released video where Chappelle can be heard talking about the attacker’s injuries & appears to be happy about the outcome.
“I felt good my friends broke his arm,” Chappelle is heard saying in the video.
Those words could cost Chappelle if a civil suit is filed.
“It is very possible that Dave Chappelle’s own words, where he says that he roughed the guy up, can be used against him in a potential civil manner down the line,” Triessl said.
The Hollywood Bowl may not be off the hook either.
Despite confiscating patrons’ cell phones ahead of the show, the security team somehow missed a replica gun that contained a knife blade.
“The Hollywood Bowl or the promoters involved in this show, including Netflix, may be facing civil liability for their lapse of security. Something went very wrong here,” Triessl said.
Felony charges will not be filed against Lee for the assault, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s office announced Thursday.
Gascón’s office has referred the case to the City Attorney’s Office, which filed four misdemeanor charges against Lee.
Misdemeanor charges carry a maximum jail sentence of one year in California.
