(Reuters) - A vicious Mexican drug gang forced some members to eat the hearts of murder victims as part of a gruesome initiation rite to root out infiltrators, a government security official said on Tuesday, citing witness testimony.
For much of the past year, Michoacan, a mountainous, agricultural state in western Mexico, has been ravaged by fighting between drug gang henchmen and vigilantes who took up arms against the cartels but have since splintered into violent factions.
A mid-December shootout between two rival groups that killed 11 people has reignited fears the government is failing to control the state after flooding it with federal troops and pressing vigilantes into a fledgling rural police force.
The renewed fighting in Michoacan comes as President Enrique Pena Nieto faces his deepest crisis since taking office, following the apparent murder of 43 trainee teachers by a drug gang working with corrupt police in neighboring Guerrero state.
The incident sparked widespread protests against the government, compounded by conflict-of-interest scandals enveloping the president and his finance minister. Pena Nieto was expected to discuss Mexico's chronic violence with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington on Tuesday.
The main gangs operating in Michoacan, La Familia Michoacana, and later offshoot the Knights Templar cartel, were founded by Nazario Moreno, or "The Craziest One," a cultish crime boss who was finally killed in March 2014 after the previous government declared him dead in 2010.

Interviewed on local television, Alfredo Castillo, Michoacan's federal security commissioner, denied cannibalism was widespread, but said there were various testimonies indicating heart-eating was part of a macabre initiation Moreno used to root out moles or test his men's loyalty.
"The ritual ranged from dismembering people they intended to kill to sometimes serving up the heart," Castillo said.
He did not elaborate on who provided the testimony and did not specify when and where the alleged initiation rituals took place. Castillo could not immediately be reached for comment.
More than 100,000 people have been killed in gang-related violence in Mexico since 2007.

Farrah Abraham has made no secret that she has gone under the knife for a few cosmetic enhancements over the years. Now she's paying the price after her most recent visit to a plastic surgeon for lip injections went terribly wrong.
According to TMZ, Abraham believes she had an allergic reaction during the procedure causing her lips to swell considerably.
Abraham shared photos of the results and offered some advice via her Twitter page.

Widely considered to the be the best mixed martial arts fighter on the planet, Jon 'Bones' Jones is now facing the biggest fight of his career.
Various media outlets are reporting that the 27-year old tested positive for positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine on December 4. The failed test came a month before Jones successfully defended his lightweight title against Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
The substance is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency for in competition use. Because the positive test came out of competition, Jones' victory over Cormier will stand. He will not face disciplinary action by the UFC and will hold onto his belt.
Jones has issued a statement confirming he has checked into a drug rehabilitation facility:
"I want to apologize to my fiancée, my children, as well as my mother, father, and brothers for the mistake that I made. I also want to apologize to the UFC, my coaches, my sponsors and equally important to my fans. I am taking this treatment program very seriously."
UFC President Dana White issued a statement of his own supporting Jones' decision to get help.
"I am proud of Jon Jones for making the decision to enter a drug treatment facility. I'm confident he'll emerge from this program like the champion he truly is."

Ludacris proposed to longtime girlfriend Eudoxie Mbouguiengue on Friday, December 26, and he did it with style.
The 37-year old rapper and actor, real name Chris Bridges, chartered a private jet and had the words, "Eudoxie, Will You Marry Me," projected in blue letters on the ground below. She happily accepted.
Luda took to Instagram to let his followers know he would soon be a married man.
"She didn't say yes. She said HELL YES! #milehighproposal," he wrote. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the couple haves been dating since 2009.
"BEST DAY OF MY LIFE WITH THE LOVE OF MY LIFE," Eudoxie shared on Instagram.
Ludacris will be very busy in 2015. In addition to his forthcoming marriage, the Disturbing Tha Peace CEO will release his long awaited Ludaversal album on March 31. That will be followed closely by the April 3rd nationwide opening of the seventh installment of the Fast and Furious movie franchise.
Congrats to Ludacris and Eudoxie!

Ludacris and Eudoxie wasted no time tying the knot. TMZ reports that Luda proposed on Christmas Eve and the couple got married the same day.
"Why wait? Did the thing before 2015. #mrandmrsrbridges," Ludacris wrote on Twitter on January 6.

PARIS (Associated Press) — Masked gunmen shouting "Allahu akbar!" stormed the Paris offices of a satirical newspaper Wednesday, killing 12 people before escaping. It was France's deadliest terror attack in at least two decades.
With a manhunt on, French President Francois Hollande called the attack on the Charlie Hebdo weekly, whose caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed have frequently drawn condemnation from Muslims, "a terrorist attack without a doubt." He said several other attacks have been thwarted in France "in recent weeks."
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed killed 12 people, including cartoonists.
France raised its security alert to the highest level and reinforced protective measures at houses of worship, stores, media offices and transportation. Top government officials were holding an emergency meeting and Hollande planned a nationally televised address in the evening. Schools closed their doors.
World leaders including President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the attack, but supporters of the militant Islamic State group celebrated the slayings as well-deserved revenge against France.
The Islamic State group has repeatedly threatened to attack France. Just minutes before the attack, Charlie Hebdo had tweeted a satirical cartoon of that extremist group's leader giving New Year's wishes. Another cartoon, released in this week's issue and entitled "Still No Attacks in France," had a caricature of an extremist fighter saying "Just wait — we have until the end of January to present our New Year's wishes."
Just before noon, multiple masked men armed with automatic weapons attacked the newspaper's office in central Paris, nearby worker Benoit Bringer told the iTele network. The attackers went to the second floor and started firing indiscriminately in the newsroom, said Christophe DeLoire of Reporters Without Borders.
"This is the darkest day of the history of the French press," DeLoire said.
Video images on the website of public broadcaster France Televisions showed two gunmen in black at a crossroads who appeared to fire down one of the streets. A cry of "Allahu akbar!" — Arabic for "God is great"— could be heard among the gunshots.
Luc Poignant of the SBP police union said the attackers left in a waiting car and later switched to another vehicle that had been stolen.
Obama's top spokesman said U.S. officials have been in close contact with the French since the attack. "We know they are not going to be cowed by this terrible act," spokesman Josh Earnest said.
On social media, supporters of militant Islamic groups praised the move. One Twitter user who identified themselves as a Tunisian loyalist of al-Qaida and the Islamic State group called the attack well-deserved revenge against France.
Elsewhere on the Internet, the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie was trending as people expressed support for weekly and for journalistic freedom.
Charlie Hebdo has been repeatedly threatened for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad and other controversial sketches. Its offices were firebombed in 2011 after a spoof issue featuring a caricature of the prophet on its cover. Nearly a year later, the publication again published crude Muhammad caricatures, drawing denunciations from around the Muslim world.
Wednesday's attack comes the same day of the release of a book by a celebrated French novelist depicting France's election of its first Muslim president. Hollande had been due to meet with the country's top religious officials later in the day.
