We're very sorry to report that longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott has passed away after battling cancer. According to ESPN, the 49-year old passed away Sunday morning, January 4.

"He didn't just push the envelope," says sports radio host and former ESPN anchor Dan Patrick. "He bulldozed it."

12351310491?profile=original

Stuart was a 22-year member of the ESPN staff.

"Think about that phrase, 'As cool as the other side of the pillow.' It's a hot, stifling night. You're having trouble sleeping. But then you think to turn the pillow over, and, Wow, it's cool, and it feels so good," said anchor Jay Harris. "Well, that's who Stuart is. He is 'the other side of pillow,' the man who made sportscasting cool. God bless whoever it was who thought to rearrange the bedding at ESPN."

In July, Stuart was given the 2014 Jimmy V Perseverance Award at The Espys. Watch his moving speech below. May he rest in peace.

Video And Pics After The Jump

LAS VEGAS (ESPN) -- In a UFC title bid on Saturday, Daniel Cormier did nearly everything he had promised to do to Jon Jones when the two finally met in the Octagon.

Except beat him.

Jones (21-1) notched his eighth consecutive light heavyweight title defense at UFC 182 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena, defeating Cormier (15-1) via unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout for Jones, 49-46.

A two-time Olympian for the U.S. wrestling team, Cormier aggressively went after Jones from the opening bell, seeking to get inside the champion's record-longest 84.5-inch wingspan.

The 35-year-old had promised to do so during fight week and certainly had more than his share of moments, but the effort required to stick on Jones at all times seemed to wear on him.

The buildup to the 205-pound championship fight included a melee during a media function in the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino lobby in August. The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined both fighters 10 percent of their individual purses for their respective participation in the scuffle.

12351315253?profile=original

UFC president Dana White said the bout featured one of the best first rounds he'd seen in a title fight.

"I thought there would be a feel-out period in the first round, with all the s--t they had talked," White said. "There was no feel-out period in that fight. They went forward from the minute the bell rang."

After his win, Jones mocked Cormier for his inability to take him down consistently.

460x.jpg

"He's only human," Jones said. "DC, all the haters, all the crap he talked -- he motivated me. I took him down, what, five takedowns to zero?

"Sorry I'm being classless right now. I don't like DC, and that's why I'm being this way."

After each round, Jones, 27, lifted his arms in a sign of victory over the challenger.

In the fifth round, Jones did so with seconds remaining on the clock. When Cormier, somewhat foolishly, dropped his guard and left his hands at his sides, Jones fired off a few last-second punches to put an exclamation point on the grudge match.

12351315662?profile=original

Despite Cormier's strength in wrestling, it was his boxing that gave Jones trouble -- especially early. He relentlessly walked forward on the much lankier Jones, working into the clinch and setting up his dirty boxing with the inside right uppercut.

"A lot of coaches in MMA focus on MMA wrestling," Jones said. "My coach, his high school team is ranked 10th in the nation. Izzy Martinez is very connected to the wrestling community. He said, 'Everywhere I go, all the tournaments, everyone is rooting for DC. The whole wrestling community is against you. We have something to prove, Jon.' "

Jones scored the first takedown of the fight, when he caught a Cormier kick and turned it into an outside trip. Cormier popped immediately back to his feet.

Neither fighter really dominated any one position. Cormier wanted an inside fight, but at times would eat knees to the stomach and short elbows to the head. Any time they were at a distance, Jones would go to work with side kicks at Cormier's legs, which at times left him vulnerable to Cormier closing the gap again.

"I can't say enough about his grit and determination," Cormier said. "I pushed him and I went after him. I fought him. He did a great job. I've had to rebuild myself numerous times. People can't even imagine. I'm going to stand across the cage from that man again and I will believe, just as I did tonight, and I'll take the fight to him again."

Jones' face started to swell in the second round from Cormier jabs and hooks. Cormier bloodied his nose as well. Jones fought a composed fight, however, backing Cormier up at times with straight lefts and surprising him with occasional takedown attempts.

Ninety seconds into the third round, Jones clipped Cormier in the eye accidentally, causing referee Herb Dean to briefly stop the action. Eye pokes have been an issue for Jones throughout his career, but Cormier recovered quickly and it did not appear to affect his performance the rest of the way.

Cormier's activity started to slowly diminish in the fourth round, as he found himself trapped against the fence carrying Jones' weight. Jones dropped for a couple takedowns from the position, dumping Cormier on his butt. The takedowns might have been more symbolic than anything else, as Cormier quickly rose back to his feet, but it was a statement by Jones.

Cormier nearly scored his only takedown of the fight in the final round -- and it was nearly a big one. He picked Jones' frame clear off the mat and somersaulted through the air and on to his back before losing his grip, and then couldn't keep him down after the fact.

12351316259?profile=original

Jones won the fifth round on gas tank alone, pushing Cormier against the fence and landing short shots.

Ranked the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world by ESPN.com, Jones moves into third place on the UFC's record books in consecutive title defenses. Former middleweight champion Anderson Silva holds the current record at 10. Former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defended his title nine consecutive times before vacating it in late 2013.

Jones will likely turn his attention to the winner of a bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson on Jan. 24.

Cormier, a former heavyweight, suffered his first professional loss. Fighting out of American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, he dropped to the 205-pound division with the goal of challenging Jones in early 2014.

On the undercard, Donald Cerrone proved too strong and too experienced for Myles Jury in earning a unanimous decision.

Via Bloody Elbow

The UFC 182 main card on pay-per-view saw four fights go down ahead of the main event between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

Donald Cerrone took a clear decision victory over Myles Jury in the co-main event of the evening. Jury never really seemed to be on pace to pull off the upset as the better Cerrone was able to bust him up on the feet. It was a 30-27 score on all three scorecards.

Brad Tavares had one of the best performances of his career, dominating his fight with Nate Marquardt. Tavares especially worked over Marquardt's leg with kicks over the three rounds. By the end of the fight, Marquardt's leg was bruised and swollen and his face was bloodied from the consistent attack of Tavares. The scorecards read 30-27 across the board for Tavares.

Kyoji Horiguchi moved closer to a UFC flyweight title shot, earning a decision over Louis Gaudinot. Horiguchi was able to keep moving quickly to keep Gaudinot from getting off much offense. Gaudinot came close to locking in a submission a few times, but it was Horiguchi's striking that was the dominating force in the bout. He took the fight with scores of 29-28, 30-27, 30-27.

The pay-per-view opened with Hector Lombard outworking a game Josh Burkman. Burkman looked better than many expected, getting to the final scorecards, but Lombard fought a disciplined, well paced fight. Burkman would say after the fight that he had an extremely bad camp, suffering several injuries. Lombard's cardio looked solid and he really took the fight to Burkman in the last round.

Video After The Jump

HONOLULU (Associated Press) — The United States says its new round of sanctions against North Korea is just the opening salvo in its response to an unprecedented cyberattack on Sony. Yet there may be little else the U.S. can do to further isolate a country that already has few friends in the world.

Even the latest sanctions, handed down by President Barack Obama in an executive order, may not sting quite as badly as U.S. would have hoped. After all, North Korea is already under a strict sanctions regime imposed by the U.S. over the North's nuclear program.

The new round of sanctions unveiled Friday hit three organizations closely tied to the North's defense apparatus, plus 10 individuals who work for those groups or for North Korea's government directly. Any assets they have in the U.S. will be frozen, and they'll be barred from using the U.S. financial system.

But all three groups were already on the U.S. sanctions list, and officials couldn't say whether any of the 10 individuals even have assets in the U.S. to freeze.

Still, American officials portrayed the move as a swift and decisive response to North Korean behavior they said had gone far over the line. Never before has the U.S. imposed sanctions on another nation in direct retaliation for a cyberattack on an American company.

"The order is not targeted at the people of North Korea, but rather is aimed at the government of North Korea and its activities that threaten the United States and others," Obama wrote in a letter to House and Senate leaders.

North Korea has denied involvement in the cyberattack, which led to the disclosure of tens of thousands of confidential Sony emails and business files, then escalated to threats of terrorist attacks against movie theaters. Many cybersecurity experts have said it's entirely possible that hackers or even Sony insiders could be the culprits, not North Korea, and questioned how the FBI can point the finger so conclusively.

12351315863?profile=original

Senior U.S. officials, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, repeated their assertion that North Korea was responsible and said independent experts don't have access to the same classified information as the FBI.

With this round of sanctions, the U.S. also put North Korea on notice that payback need not be limited to those who perpetrated the attack.

The 10 North Koreans singled out for sanctions didn't necessarily have anything to do with the attack on Sony, senior U.S. officials said. Anyone who works for or helps North Korea's government is now fair game, said the officials — especially North Korea's defense sector and spying operations.

Yet prominent lawmakers were already calling for an ever harsher stance. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who is set to chair the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this year, said it was time to concede the U.S. policy on North Korea isn't working.

Added House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif.: "We need to go further to sanction those financial institutions in Asia and beyond that are supporting the brutal and dangerous North Korean regime."

Obama has said the U.S. is considering whether to put North Korea back on its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Beyond that, it's unclear what additional penalties the U.S. has in its arsenal. There is no appetite for a military intervention. The U.S. has said that some elements of its response may not be seen publicly, however.

The sanctions target the country's primary intelligence agency, a state-owned arms dealer that exports missile and weapons technology, and the Korea Tangun Trading Corp., which supports defense research. The individuals sanctioned include North Koreans representing the country's interests in Iran, Russia and Syria.

There was no immediate response from North Korea. Sony declined to comment.

While denying any role in a cyberattack, North Korea has expressed fury over the Sony comedy flick "The Interview," which depicts a fictional assassination plot against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Sony initially called off the film's release after movie theaters decided not to show the film. After Obama criticized that decision, Sony decided to release the film in a limited number of theaters and online.

12351310668?profile=original

The White House called the sanctions "the first aspect of our response" to the Sony attack, a declaration that raised fresh questions about who was behind a nearly 10-hour shutdown of North Korean websites last week. The shutdown prompted a blunt response from North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission, which blamed the U.S. and hurled racial slurs at Obama, calling him a reckless "monkey in a tropical forest."

Video After The Jump

PASADENA, Calif. (Associated Press) — Several Oregon players are facing team discipline after celebrating their Rose Bowl win Thursday night by mocking Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and allegations of sexual assault that have followed the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner the past two years.

Video taken from the field as Oregon celebrated its 59-20 win in the College Football Playoff semifinal showed at least three players chanting "No means no!" to the tune of a chant used by Florida State fans. The short video, uploaded to Vine by Bear Heiser of Fox Sports West, quickly drew strong reactions on social networks.

The video shows running back Kadi Benoit, linebacker Torrodney Prevot and a third player wearing a "WON NOT DONE" shirt participating in the chant.

12351320658?profile=original

Reached by The Associated Press, Heiser said the video was taken on the field as Oregon players celebrated the win from a podium. He shared a longer, 27-second video with the AP that showed the chant initiated somewhere off-camera. The players in the shorter video, as well as wide receiver Chance Allen, joined in.

12351321274?profile=original

Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said in a statement to The Associated Press that the behavior was inappropriate.

"This is not what our program stands for, and the student-athletes will be disciplined internally," Helfrich said.

Winston was never charged after a woman accused him of raping her in 2012. The case has gone through lengthy proceedings, with Winston recently cleared of violating Florida State's student code of conduct.

12351321079?profile=original

Oregon athletes have also faced sex assault allegations. Three former basketball players were suspended in June for a minimum of four years after a freshman student filed a report alleging they sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors decided there wasn't enough evidence to charge the players, who said the sexual contact was consensual.
