Video After The Jump

(AP) - Rae Carruth is a free man.

The former NFL wide receiver was released from prison Monday after serving more than 18 years for conspiring to murder the mother of his unborn child.

The Carolina Panthers’ 1997 first-round draft pick was released from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, after completing his sentence of 18 to 24 years.

Carruth did not speak to reporters on as he left the prison wearing a knit cap and an unzipped jacket on a chilly morning with temperatures in the high 30s. There was a smattering of applause as Carruth got into a white SUV and was whisked away from the prison.

Carruth, now 44, was found guilty of orchestrating a plot to kill Cherica Adams on Nov. 16, 1999, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to avoid paying child support. Adams was shot four times while driving her car, but managed to make a 911 call that helped implicate Carruth.

Adams fell into a coma and died less than a month later after the shooting.

The child she was carrying, Chancellor Lee Adams, was delivered by emergency cesarean section but suffers from permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

Last week, he told WSOC-TV in Charlotte in a telephone interview, “I just truly want to be forgiven.”

Carruth went on to say he was “somewhat frightened” about his release, adding that “I’m nervous just about how I’ll be received by the public. I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me.”

Carruth has repeatedly said he wants to have a relationship with his son, who remains in the custody of his grandmother, Saundra Adams, who has raised him since birth. Adams had previously said she would be there when Carruth got out of prison, but she was not present on Monday.

Carruth’s arrest on charges of conspiracy and attempted murder nine days after the shooting sent shockwaves throughout the Panthers organization.

The team released Carruth and the NFL suspended him indefinitely after he fled the Charlotte area after posting $3 million bail and was found by federal authorities hiding in the trunk of a car in Tennessee, about 500 miles from Charlotte.

Panthers center Frank Garcia, who was teammates with Carruth for more than two seasons, said players were stunned when they heard the news of Carruth’s possible involvement in the murder, about 20 miles from the team’s downtown stadium in the affluent section of South Charlotte.

“It would be like finding out the guy sitting in the cubicle next to you at work was arrested for murder,” Garcia said. “You just don’t always know people as well as you think you do.”

Garcia said Carruth was a little shy, and mostly kept to himself. But he said Carruth had a passion for helping kids, including reading books to elementary school students.

It was a difficult time in Panthers history.

Some players were called out of football practice to testify at the trial. Those not involved would spend time huddling in the players’ lounge watching the trial on Court TV.

“That is one time where you were actually hiding from the cameras,” Garcia said. “You just wanted to stay low and not be involved. All along you’re asking yourself, ‘Did I miss any signs? How is somebody capable of this?’”

While in jail Carruth worked as a barber, making about $1 per hour, according to North Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins.

That’s a far cry from the four-year, $3.7 million contract Carruth signed with the Panthers after being drafted — although he never collected all of that money since he was released in the third year of his deal.

Carruth’s future is uncertain.

He was taken to an undisclosed location after his release.

He will be a on a ninth-month post-release program, according to Higgins. He would need special permission from a case officer to leave the state or the country during that span, but is free to go wherever he pleases after nine months.

The NBA suspended Los Angeles Lakers forward Brandon Ingram (four games), guard Rajon Rondo (three games) and Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul (two games), all without pay, for their roles in a fourth-quarter fight on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

"Ingram has been suspended for aggressively returning to and escalating the altercation and throwing a punch in the direction of Paul, confronting a game official in a hostile manner, and instigating the overall incident by shoving Rockets guard James Harden," the league said in a statement. "Rondo has been suspended for instigating a physical altercation with, and spitting and throwing multiple punches at, Paul. Paul has been suspended for poking at and making contact with the face of Rondo, and throwing multiple punches at him."

Rondo received one more game than Paul because he threw the first punch, NBA vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe, who was in attendance for Saturday night's skirmish, told SportsCenter on Sunday night.

"We try to judge each one of these (incidents) on the merits, who does what, who instigates, how dangerous the situation and becomes and is," VanDeWeghe said. "And also the discipline is an act of deterrence. We want to make sure that we deter this further action and make a statement that this is not acceptable. Fighting's not acceptable in our league and never has been."

(Sporting News) - Manny Pacquiao said Thursday that he will return to the United States next year to defend his WBA (Regular) welterweight title against Adrien Broner. The fight will be Pacquiao's first in the U.S. in more than two years.

Sources told ESPN.com the bout is likely to take place Jan. 19 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs) made his announcement in Manila, Philippines, during a meeting of the International Sports Promotion Society, which named him an ambassador.

The 39-year-old Pacquiao has not fought in the States since he defeated Jessie Vargas in 2016 at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas to capture the WBO welterweight belt. He reportedly owes tens of millions of dollars in federal income taxes even though he made in excess of $150 million for his 2015 bout vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

His last fight took place in Malaysia, where scored a seventh-round knockout of Lucas Matthysse in July for his first KO victory in more than eight years.

Broner has a professional record of (33-3-1-1 (DQ), 24 KOs).

Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor 2 may be on the way soon. Money May has expressed an interest in running it back with the Irishman following a proposed boxing match with current UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

"McGregor was talking that shit, so it ain't over," Floyd told TMZ Sports. "After me and Khabib lock up, me and McGregor we gonna lock up again."

Mayweather also offered an explanation as to why he's taking fights with guys who don't traditionally box.

"They say 'why you keep fighting all these MMA guys?' Me and Khabib gonna do crazy numbers. Me and McGregor gonna do crazy numbers," he said. "I only clash with me and guys that can do crazy numbers."

Of course, Conor and Floyd clashed back in August 2017 -- with Floyd dominating most of the fight and ultimately getting a TKO in the 10th round.
