LONDON (AP) — An activist who has played a leading role in anti-racism demonstrations in Britain was in critical condition in a London hospital on Monday after being shot.
The Taking the Initiative Party said Sasha Johnson, who played a leading role in Black Lives Matter protests last year, was shot in the head on Sunday. Police and a friend said it did not appear to be a targeted attack, though the party said Johnson had received “numerous death threats” related to her activism.
The party said Johnson was “a strong, powerful voice for our people and our community.”
The Metropolitan Police force said officers were called to reports of gunshots in the Peckham area of the city just before 3 a.m. on Sunday. Police said the shooting took place near a house where a party was taking place.
The police statement said a 27-year-old woman was in a hospital in critical condition after being shot. It did not identify her, but said “there is nothing to suggest it was a targeted attack or that the woman had received any credible threats against her before this incident.”
Detectives have appealed for witnesses and have not made any arrests.
A friend, Imarn Ayton, said she did not believe Johnson was the intended target.
“As far as we are aware, she was at a party,” she told the BBC. “There was a rival gang that may have heard about someone being in that party that they didn’t feel quite comfortable with or trusted and so they resorted to driving past and shooting into the garden, and one of those shots obviously hit Sasha Johnson.
“But I don’t believe she was the intended victim.”
Like other countries, Britain has faced an uncomfortable reckoning with race since the death of George Floyd, a Black American, at the knee of a U.S. policeman in May 2020 sparked anti-racism protests around the world.
Large crowds at Black Lives Matter protests across the U.K. called on the government and institutions to face up to the legacy of the British Empire and the country’s extensive profits from the slave trade. Johnson was a speaker at rallies last summer and is a leader of the newly founded, Black-led Taking the Initiative Party.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis city leaders announced Sunday a $30,000 reward fund for information that leads to arrests in three recent shootings that killed one child & left two others critically injured.
The fund was organized by the Minneapolis Regional Chamber. At a press conference announcing the reward, Mayor Jacob Frey, Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, family members of the children & activists pleaded for someone from the community to step forward with information.
“I’m begging, again, please, if you know who these people are, contact me, this family or the Minneapolis police,” activist KG Wilson, whose granddaughter Aniya Allen died last week after being hit by gunfire in the backseat of a car, said. “Please, please, please, please, I’m begging you.”
“We will not protect killers of children, people who shoot children,” civil rights attorney & activist Nekima Levy Armstrong said. “It is time for a paradigm shift & for our community to feel safe."
Allen’s was the latest of the three shootings, which all took place in north Minneapolis in a less than three week span.
Ten-year-old Ladavionne Garrett Jr. was in the back seat of his parents’ car on April 30 when he was shot in the head. On May 15, 9-year-old Trinity-Ottoson Smith was at a birthday party when she was also struck in the head by gunfire.
Six-year-old Allen was also shot in the head while riding in her family’s car Monday on the way home from McDonald’s, Wilson said. She later died of her injuries at an area hospital.
“These are children who are loved,” Wilson said. “This little girl loved everybody.”
The Minneapolis Regional Chamber said up to $10,000 will be offered for information that leads to an arrest in each shooting.
“We will not stop until we find, locate & apprehend those who are responsible,” Arradondo said. “I am committed to making sure that this does not become our normal.”
“Every parent should have the ability to send their kid outside to play without the risk of getting hit by gunfire,” Frey said. “Every one of these kids deserves justice & that’s the direction that we all collectively need to be moving right now.
ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — The family of a 6-year-old Southern California boy who was shot to death by another driver in a road-rage attack announced a $50,000 reward on Sunday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect.
The mother of Aiden Leos told KNSD-TV she was driving her son to school Friday morning when a white Volkswagen station wagon cut her off on State Route 55 in the city of Orange.
“As I was merging away from the carpool lane, I heard a loud noise and I heard my son say ‘ow’ and I pulled the car over as soon as possible, and he had been shot,” Joanna Cloonan, said. She said the bullet went through the trunk and struck her son, who was strapped into his booster seat in the rear passenger side.
“I tried to save him by calling 911, but he was losing a lot of blood... he just didn’t deserve that. No one deserves that.”
Reyes Valdivia, who along with his wife pulled over to help, said Cloonan told them she “flipped off” the car, and when she started transitioning to the right, the suspect vehicle slipped behind her before one of the occupants fired the shot.
Investigators believe a man and a woman were inside the Volkswagen at the time of the shooting.
The California Highway Patrol asked for assistance from any drivers who were on that section of freeway between 7:55 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., especially if their vehicles have dashboard cameras.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The North Charleston Police Department says they are investigating multiple shootings that happened after a fight broke out at a concert.
NCPD Deputy Chief Scott Deckard says police responded to the area of Piggly Wiggly Drive and W. Jimtown Drive at around 10:27 p.m. Saturday.
Officers say they reported to the area in reference to a shooting, but when they arrived they found numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Deckard says there were a total of 14 victims shot and one 14-year-old female suffered fatal wounds.
The victims were transported to local hospitals and Deckard says several other victims were located at area hospitals, after they were transported by others.
Deckard says preliminary information is that a fight broke out near the stage during an unannounced and unauthorized concert event within the neighborhood. He says NCPD was not notified of the event.
North Charleston Police are actively investigating the incident, but there isn’t any suspect information at this point in the investigation.
Michael Jackson's family -- or at least some of them -- are outraged by the revelations about the BBC's Martin Bashir interview with Princess Diana, & they're reportedly considering legal action.
In case you don't remember, Bashir did a documentary in 2003 titled "Living with Michael Jackson." It profiled MJ's life at the Neverland Ranch. During the interview, Bashir lasered in on Jackson's relationship with young boys & the allegations of sexual abuse.
Jackson was unapologetic about sleeping in the same bed as 13-year-old Gavin Arvizo, saying, "Why can't you share your bed? That's the most loving thing to do, to share your bed with someone."
As you know, Jackson was prosecuted for allegedly molesting Arvizo. The jury found MJ not guilty.
In the wake of the report concluding Bashir deceived Princess Diana into doing her famous interview, Jackson's nephew, Taj, and MJ's brother, Tito, now allege Bashir "manipulated footage & unethical journalism."
The pair believe Bashir tricked Jackson the way he tricked Diana. Taj blames Bashir on Michael's death, saying, "Bashir's manipulated footage & unethically journalism is one of the main reasons my uncle Michael is not here today."
Taj wasn't done, adding, "That 2005 trial broke him. Shame on those who provided cover for Bashir. Shame on those who rewarded him. My family deserves an investigation & apology too."
Jackson's former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, told the Mirror the Jackson family is considering taking legal action.
An Austrian hospital amputated the wrong leg of a patient, it said on Thursday, blaming human error for what it called a "tragic mistake."
The elderly patient is suffering from many illnesses, the Freistadt Clinic, in a town of the same name near the Czech border, said in a statement.
Previous sicknesses have affected his legs, to the point that his left leg required amputation.
"We are deeply shocked that on Tuesday, May 18, despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg of an 82-year old man ... was amputated," the clinic said, adding that the mistake was first noticed during a bandage change on Thursday morning.
The error appears to have been made shortly before the operation, when the leg that was to be amputated was marked, the clinic said.
"Unfortunately the mistake, in which the right leg was removed instead of the left, occurred as a result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances," it said, adding that it was investigating what happened and would review its standards.
The patient has been offered psychological assistance and must still undergo another operation to remove his left leg from mid-thigh.
"The operation is planned shortly," the clinic said.
Paul Mooney made the Laugh Factory in Hollywood practically his second home ... so it's only fitting to have a tribute there & comedy royalty's expected to attend.
Jamie Masada, the owner & founder of the iconic comedy club, tells TMZ ... a special show will go down in honor of Paul Thursday at 3 PM. Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart & Tiffany Haddish are among the many who have reached out to say they will attend.
Paul's twin sons -- comedians Dwayne & Daryl -- will also be there ... with the list of special guests expected only to grow.
Jamie says he envisions guests doing a little stand-up (duh), sharing their best Paul Mooney stories & more.
Paul was a regular at the famed Hollywood location. In fact ... Jamie tells us he still remembers Paul being one of the very first comedians on opening night in 1979.
Paul, of course, was vocal about the Black Lives Matter movement & he always found hilarious, yet enlightening, ways to weave the movement into his set. After all ... he had been advocating on behalf of his community over the course of his 40-plus years on stage.
We're told there were instances back in the day when other clubs wouldn't let Paul perform his material because of his race. But, the Laugh Factory always gave him a platform.
The comedy club's the latest to honor Paul. As we first reported ... the City of Oakland -- where he was raised & sadly died -- plans to honor him as well.
An aspiring rapper died Thursday after being shot on the East Side and dropped off at the Mount Carmel East emergency room.
Courtney Bruce, 26, also known as "Boog The Bandit," died at 6:11 p.m. Thursday.
Columbus police said Bruce, of the East Side, was in a car with a 25-year-old man on the 3700 block of Dort Place when the pair were approached by a group of men with handguns. Several shots were fired, striking Bruce.
The man who was with Bruce drove her to the hospital. He was not injured.
HipHop DX, an online blog, said Bruce had been gaining traction in 2021 with three singles, "Heart Away," "Hot Topic" and "Risky," garnering more than 100,000 views each on YouTube.
Boog, a Columbus native, also garnered recognition from hip-hop heavyweights such as culture critic DJ Akademiks, Canton-born rap star Trippie Redd and others for her superstar-like presence.
(Reuters) More video of a fatal 2019 encounter of a Black man with police in Louisiana was released by authorities late Friday, & two state troopers were notified that they will be fired, in the fallout of a lethal traffic stop.
The newly-released bodycam footage shows a high-speed chase & Louisiana state troopers punching motorist Ronald Greene, 49, a Black man, while he was already in handcuffed.
He was also dragged across the ground by shackled feet & stunned with tasers as he cried, "I'm scared."
Greene, of West Monroe, Louisiana, led police on a high-speed chase after midnight of May 10, 2019, and crashed his car before being taken into custody, police said. He died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital, police said.
An autopsy showed that Green had alcohol & cocaine in his system, suffered multiple injuries from the crash, as well as injuries from a physical struggle. The manner of death was not listed.
Earlier this week, the case quickly became another national touchstone of alleged police abuse after the unauthorized release of police video by the Associated Press.
In response to that release, Colonel Lamar Davis, the superintendent of the Louisiana State Police held a late night press conference & said the department is releasing all the police bodycam video to add context to what has already been public.
"It's unfortunate that the path to get here has taken so long," he said. "But we cannot comment on any conduct of the officers involved & we cannot offer specifics of the investigation."
But Davis offered no explanation as to why the case has taken so long to become public.
The attorney for Davis's family, Lee Merritt, said that he doesn't understand why it's taken two years for the family to get answers.
"The family says none of this lip-service matters until there is criminal accountability in the department," Merritt said. "What happened here is a crime."
Of the troopers involved, DaKota DeMoss has been notified that the department intends to fire him and he remains on leave pending another excessive use of force case, police said.
Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth was also notified of the intent to dismiss him, and he died hours later in a fatal car crash, police said.
Another trooper, Kory York, served a 50-hour suspension and is back on duty.
The case is also the subject of a federal civil rights investigation.
