ABINGDON, Va. (WRIC) — A Virginia teen, who ordered hundreds of fentanyl-laced pills through Snapchat from a supplier in California, has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison.
19-year-old Kobe Malik Woods pleaded guilty in January to one count of possession with the intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl.
“Throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia & across the nation, individuals are struggling with substance abuse disorder, a disease fueled by those who profit from addiction,” United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh said. “Fentanyl-laced pills pose a significant risk of death to anyone who ingests them & my office will continue to bring individuals to account for trafficking these deadly drugs in our communities.”
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division, Stanley M. Meador, reiterated the importance of getting the drugs off the streets.
“Our mission is to protect the American people. This includes doing our part working with our local and federal law enforcement partners to identify & arrest those responsible for introducing these pills, or any illicit drug, into our communities,” Meador said.
Court documents stated, in early 2021, law enforcement began to investigate a flood of illegal pill distribution in Smyth County, Virginia. Investigators identified multiple people who were involved. They intercepted a parcel shipped from California & addressed to Woods’s residence that contained approximately 800 fentanyl pills.
The Department of Justice said the intercepted pills resembled pharmaceutical-grade oxycodone-hydrochloride pills and were inconsistent in shape, size and color. According to DOJ, that indicated the pills were counterfeit. Pills of this type are sometimes referred to as “Roxicodone,” “pressed,” or “M30” pills. The pills often have an imprint of an “M” on one side and a “30” on the other side.
In June 2021, law enforcement executed a controlled delivery of the parcel to Woods’s home in Marion, Va. While conducting surveillance, the investigators saw a woman retrieve the package & take it inside. Investigators executed a search warrant & Woods attempted to escape with the parcel in his hands but was captured a short distance away from the home.

A reputed federal informant and whistleblower who went missing after he was reported to have turned over a trove of secret files about Deutsche Bank was found dead at a Los Angeles school this week.
The body of Valentin Broeksmit, 46, was found Monday at Woodrow Wilson High School shortly before 7 a.m., Sgt. Rudy Perez of the Los Angeles School Police Department said in an email.
Records of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner do not list a cause of death. Los Angeles Police Capt. Kenneth Cabrera told the Los Angeles Times that authorities do not suspect foul play.
In a 2019 profile, the New York Times reported that Broeksmit is the son of a Deutsche Bank executive who died by suicide in 2014. After his father's death, Broeksmit gained access to his father's email account and files related to the bank.
Broeksmit was last seen driving a red Mini Cooper on the afternoon of April 6, 2021, on Riverside Drive and was later reported missing by relatives, Los Angeles police said.
His vehicle was found, the department said, but Broeksmit remained missing.
Perez said Wednesday that he appeared to be homeless.
According to a 2019 profile in The New York Times, Broeksmit was a musician and the son of a Deutsche Bank executive who died by suicide in 2014.

The search at A$AP Rocky's home turned up guns, multiple guns, but what's unclear ... did cops seize the gun that was used to shoot a man during an argument in Hollywood.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... detectives will run ballistic tests on the weapons ... to determine if Rocky was the triggerman.
We're also told cops will run background on the firearms to determine where they came from, who bought them, or if they'd been reported stolen.
As we reported, Rocky was arrested at a private LAX terminal last week when he and Rihanna returned from Barbados. Rocky was booked for assault with a deadly weapon stemming from the shooting in November in which cops say Rocky and an accomplice got into an argument in Hollywood that escalated to gunfire -- the alleged victim's hand was grazed.
TMZ broke the story ... Rocky and his legal team say they were shocked by the arrest and his alleged ties to the shooting. Rather than coordinate a voluntary surrender, cops simply nabbed him off the jet. Police say they needed the element of surprise so as not to tip A$AP off they would search his house for the weapon.
If one of the guns seized at Rocky's home turns out to be the weapon in question ... it could cement the case for prosecutors, who have yet to charge Rocky.

DaBaby's legal team says folks are wrong for jumping to conclusions over a recently surfaced video of the rapper shooting & killing a man at a Walmart ... they say it actually supports the rapper's defense.
Rolling Stone published surveillance footage Sunday from the 2018 fatal shooting in North Carolina & the article appeared to question DaBaby's self-defense narrative.
DaBaby's lawyers, Drew Findling & Marissa Goldberg, tell TMZ ... the video was reviewed by prosecutors back in 2018 & they concluded DaBaby acted in self-defense & therefore was not prosecuted for homicide.
We're told the video was even viewed by a Mecklenburg County judge in connection with a misdemeanor charge for not having the proper permits for his gun.
As for the self-defense part, DaBaby told cops the victim & another accomplice were following him around the Walmart store, & allegedly threatened him & flashed a gun ... causing him to feel the need to protect himself.
The rapper's attorney tells us, "Witnesses were interviewed & corroborated Mr. Kirk's statement. The entirety of the surveillance video was viewed & determined to corroborate Mr. Kirk's statement ... Mr. Kirk was protecting himself & his family at the time of the shooting."

NEW YORK - A Queens prostitute has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the overdose deaths of four men, including an Italian chef at a popular restaurant.
Angelina Barini was arrested in August, 2019 on charges of conspiracy to distribute & possess with intent to distribute one or more substances containing fentanyl. Barini, 43, had pleaded guilty in August to charges that she distributed fentanyl to multiple men and the "date rape" drug GBL to Andrea Zemperoni.
She would use the drugs to incapacitate the men & then rob them.
The body of Zamperoni was found at a hostel in Queens after he didn't report for work as head chef at Cipriani Dolci. The Italian-born chef had worked in Cipriani's Grand Central Terminal location for a little more than a year. He previously worked at a Cipriani restaurant in London.
"In the corner of the room, law enforcement authorities noticed what appeared to be a garbage can with bed linens stuffed inside & what appeared to be a bare human foot sticking out of the bed linens," court papers said.
Barini claimed she didn't do it & that her pimp would not let her call the police and discussed whether to cut up the body.
After searching the room, court papers said authorities recovered "a purple liquid in a glass with powder at the top of the liquid & around the rim, glass pipes for smoking narcotics, bottles of bleach & bleach-covered towels, electronics, a power saw & an empty suitcase."
Prosecutors said Barini admitted to providing the chef drugs & later admitted that her pimp gave the chef "liquid ecstasy."
Barini is also accused of providing fatal overdoses of drugs to unidentified men in Queens.
The Italian-born chef had worked in Cipriani's Grand Central Terminal location for a little more than a year. He previously worked at a Cipriani restaurant in London.
"The defendant drugged & killed multiple people for a few quick dollars. She stole their personal belongings while they lay unconscious dying from the lethal drugs she gave them. The defendant’s substantial prison sentence is warranted by her shocking disregard for human life," stated United States Attorney Peace. "Hopefully, today’s sentence will bring some solace to the victims’ families & serve as a warning to future perpetrators that there are significant consequences to these horrific crimes."

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Newly released video from inside a school bus shows the moment a street racer crashed into its back wheel, causing the bus to flip on its side and hurling more than 20 out of their seats.
Students from George Sanchez Collaborative Community School are heard screaming and crying after a white Ford Mustang slammed into the passenger side of the bus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
"Someone help Lizzie," one student yells as the children scramble to exit the school bus.
The driver of the Mustang, identified as 49-year-old Mario Perez, was allegedly racing a blue Mustang at more than 100 miles per hour before the moment of impact.
Perez suffered a broken femur and was charged with two counts of great bodily harm by vehicle. Witnesses said the other vehicle sped away after the crash. There are no reports of that driver's arrest.
Of the 23 students on board, seven were taken to the hospital. Two suffered serious injuries to their legs and another had a fractured pelvis.
"As a parent, that would be my worst nightmare if your kid was in an accident on the bus," local resident Jennifer Esquerra said.
