An Ohio man accused of decapitating his mother and setting fire to the woman's body -- as a 6-year-old relative watched -- was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday.
In court this week, Lionel Justin Gore pleaded guilty to 1 count of aggravated murder -- waiving the right to a jury trial -- in the brutal slaying of Diane Gore in November 2021. He was originally indicted on 4 counts of Aggravated Arson, 3 counts of Endangering Children in the third degree, 1 count of Tampering with Evidence in the third degree, and 1 count of Abuse of a Corpse -- and, in December 2021, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity before a psychological evaluation.
He changed his plea this week and the additional charges against him were dropped.
On November 5, 2021, officers responded to a call about a fire in New Matamora, Ohio at the home of Diane Gore. The victim's sister was there & reportedly told police she saw Lionel exit the home "covered in blood," before he threatened her to get away from him or he would "kill [her] next." Lionel's 6-year-old nephew also told police he saw his uncle "sawing" Diane's neck with 7 different knives before setting the house ablaze with the child still inside.
Following a car chase, Gore was apprehended & told police he "cut [his mother's] head off & set her on fire" because the Holy Spirit told him to, because she was the devil.
In court Thursday, family members read emotional statements to Lionel. One of them read a letter from the child who witnessed the decapitation. "Will you ask him to please keep him in jail so we can be safe? Ask him to do it for me. Please," it said.
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (ABC7 Chicago) -- East Chicago, Indiana, police said a teacher is in custody after allegedly telling a student she had a "kill list" for other students & staff at her school.
Police said officers were called to St. Stanislaus School Wednesday. There, the principal & assistant principal told them a student told their counselor that their fifth grade teacher made comments to them about killing herself, students & staff at the school.
Police said the teacher told the student she had a list & that the student was at the bottom of that list.
"I'm really, like, scared & worried," said Portia Jones, the student involved. "She said she wanted to choke us & she wanted to kill herself."
The teacher was immediately taken to the principal's office, where she allegedly admitted that she did make those statements & did have a "kill list."
East Chicago police said the student alerted their counselor to the teacher's comments. but police were not called until 4 hours later, after the teacher was allowed to leave.
"They should have never let her walk out them doors. They should've called the police right then & there. That's a threat on the school," Quiannis Jones said.
Thursday morning, police took the teacher into custody.
The investigation is ongoing & active, police said. No further details have been released. No charges against the teacher have been announced.

A gunman has opened fire in a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina, killing at least five people and injuring several others, according to local media. An off-duty police officer is among those killed and the suspect is not in custody.
The incident began just before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday when officers were called for an “active shooter” in the area of Neuse River Greenway in east Raleigh. The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.
According to initial reports, multiple people have been shot at multiple locations in east Raleigh. Aerial footage showed a car riddled with bullets at one of the scenes, though it wasn’t clear if anyone was inside.
Sources told local news channel ABC11 that at least 5 people were killed, including an off-duty police officer and four to five civilians. Several other people have been injured, including a second police officer.
Police are still searching for the suspect, who may now be barricaded in a nearby garage.
“Residents in the area of McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive, and Old Milburnie Road are being advised to remain indoors,” police said in a statement. “Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”
A possible motive for the shooting spree was not immediately known. Witnesses described the gunman as a white male, possibly a teenager, who was dressed in camo and armed with a long barrel shotgun.
A large number of emergency services, including a SWAT team and multiple ambulances, are at the scene.
One person is in custody in connection with Tuesday’s kidnapping and sexual assault of a 14-year-old at El Sereno Park, Los Angeles police confirmed Wednesday.
Police have identified the suspect as Edward William Banks, 27, from Los Angeles. Banks was located in the 2500 block of Mallory Street thanks to tips from community members.
The suspect was caught on surveillance footage allegedly abducting the 14-year-old victim near the 4700 block of Klamath Street.
Video from the Los Angeles Police Department shows Banks draping one arm over the victim’s shoulders as they walk down a neighborhood street near El Sereno Park.
Police say Banks threatened the child with a weapon and forced the victim into a bathroom where the sexual assault occurred.
He then fled the location in an unknown direction.
Banks was arrested on Tuesday night and booked on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping to commit rape. His bail is set at $1 million.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Fox13) - Nikolas Cruz will be sentenced to life without parole for the 2018 massacre that killed 17 people at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, after the jury said Thursday that it could not unanimously agree that he should be executed.
Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer will formally issue the life sentences Nov. 1. Relatives, along with the students & teachers Cruz wounded.
Following the recommendation, the Stand With Parkland group – which includes parents & spouses of Parkland shooting victims – issued the following statement:
"Today’s ruling was yet another gut punch for so many of us who devastatingly lost our loved ones on that tragic Valentine’s Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School," said Tony Montalto, father of Gina Montalto and President of Stand with Parkland. "17 beautiful lives were cut short, by murder & the monster that killed them gets to live to see another day. While this sentence fails to punish the perpetrator to the fullest extent of the law — it will not stop our mission to effect positive change at a federal, state and local level to prevent school shooting tragedies from shattering other American families."
If the jury recommended the death penalty, it must be unanimous, based on Florida law. If that happened, it would have been up to Judge Scherer to make a final decision.
The massacre is the deadliest mass shooting to ever go to trial. Nine other people in the U.S. who fatally shot at least 17 people died during or immediately after their attacks by suicide or police gunfire. The suspect in the 2019 massacre of 23 at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart is awaiting trial.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WESH) — Tampa police arrested a man accused of shooting at a homeless family while they slept in their car on Wednesday, sending a pregnant mother to the hospital.
Detectives identified Christopher Stamat Jr., 21, as the owner of a black BMW reportedly caught on camera ‘canvassing’ the area where the shooting occurred.
Police obtained a search warrant for Stamat’s apartment & car, which they said turned up an empty gun box for a 9 mm handgun, as well as bullet casings allegedly matching the ones found at the crime scene.
Police said the family of 5, consisting of 3 young children, a father, & a mother who was 9 weeks pregnant, were sleeping in a car when a vehicle approached around 4:30 a.m., opened fire & drove away.
Tampa Police Chief Mary O’Connor said the father yelled for his family to take cover as several bullets struck their sedan.
“Once the vehicle flees, he realizes his wife is shot,” Chief O’Connor said on Wednesday. “She got shot in the head. By the grace of God, the children did not get hit.”
Authorities said the bullet that struck the mother grazed her in the head. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Tampa police said Stamat did not provide a motive for the shooting, but said that he felt that people were following & stalking him using multiple vehicles, bikes & on foot. There was reportedly no indication that Stamat & the victims knew each other.
Stamat faces 6 felony charges, including 4 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, 1 count of second degree attempted murder & 1 count of shooting into a vehicle.

A Minnesota supporter of former President Donald Trump who officials say staged a fire that he blamed on left-wing radicals pleaded guilty Tuesday to wire fraud.
Denis Molla, 30, had claimed that his camper was targeted because of his Trump flag.
He filed fraudulent insurance claims worth hundreds of thousands of dollars after the 2020 incident at his Minneapolis-area residence, prosecutors said.
Molla also created a GoFundMe fundraiser after the fire.
Molla took more than $78,000 from an insurance company & donors who used GoFundMe. He submitted insurance claims worth more than $300,000.
His attorney told NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis that Molla has paid back the insurance money & plans to return the GoFundMe cash.
Molla, of Brooklyn Center, told police that on Sept. 23, 2020, his camper was set on fire because of the Trump flag & he claimed that his garage door was spray-painted with an antifa symbol & graffiti saying “Biden 2020” & “BLM.”
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — 3 Philadelphia police officers were shot & wounded at a home & a suspect was killed early Wednesday when a SWAT team tried to arrest a man wanted on a homicide charge.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m., soon after officers tried to serve a warrant in North Philadelphia, said First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford. The 19-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, fired at officers through a window as they were attempting to knock on the front door.
Officers entered the house, where the man & officers exchanged gunfire, he said. The man tried to exit the back of the home while firing at officers, who returned fire.
The man was wanted for a homicide that occurred in August. He was also a suspect in several armed robberies.
The 19-year-old was taken to the hospital & pronounced dead, Stanford said. Police did not release details of his injuries or say how many times he had been shot.
One officer was shot in the hip, while another had a leg wound. A third officer was hit in the chest by a bullet that ricocheted off of his Kevlar vest. All 3 were taken to a hospital & were listed as stable.
“The fact that ... there are this many incidents with SWAT officers being fired upon, is not normal. We have come to believe this is a normal course of events. It is not,” Stanford said.
It was unclear how many people were in the home at the time of the shooting. But at least 1 other person was taken from the scene in handcuffs. Stanford said police don’t believe anyone else was involved in the shooting, but the investigation continues.
