CHESAPEAKE, Va., Nov 23 (Reuters) - A Walmart employee killed six people and wounded several others before fatally shooting himself at a store in Chesapeake, Virginia, authorities said on Wednesday, in the latest episode of gun violence in the United States.
The shooter, who has not been identified, used a pistol in the shooting late Tuesday, wounding at least four people in addition to the fatalities, Chesapeake Police Chief Mark Solesky said at a news conference.
Coming on the heels of the shooting of five people at a Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub on Saturday, the latest massacre prompted another round of condemnations by public officials and calls by activists for tighter gun control.
"Heinous acts of violence have no place in our communities," Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said on Twitter. The Republican has faced stepped-up calls for policies to address gun violence after three University of Virginia students were shot to death earlier this month.
In addition to seven confirmed dead, including the shooter, four people were being treated at hospitals in the area, just south of Norfolk, Solesky said.
One employee told ABC News that the shooter was a manager at the store.
"I looked up and my manager just opened the door and he just opened fire," Briana Tyler said, according to ABC.
It is not the first mass shooting at a Walmart, which has thousands of stores across the United States.
At a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, in August 2019, 23 people were killed in a mass shooting near the U.S.-Mexico border in an act described as domestic terrorism by law enforcement. It was also the deadliest attack on the Hispanic community in modern times. Patrick Wood Crusius, then 21, from Allen, Texas, was arrested in the shooting and he left behind a manifesto with white nationalist and anti-immigrant themes.
Walmart in a statement on Wednesday said it was "shocked" at the violence at the Chesapeake store and it was working closely with law enforcement.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A record verdict was announced Monday for a Fairborn man wrongfully accused of raping several women in the 1990s, awarding 57-year-old Roger ‘Dean’ Gillispie $45 million, the highest settlement in state history.
When he was 24 years old, he was accused of raping 3 women, a crime he says he never had anything to do with. Today, he was declared a wrongfully imprisoned person by the state of Ohio.
“My whole life has been in a courtroom, 20 years in prison & in a courtroom,” said Gillispie. “33 years ago I went to prison for a crime I absolutely had nothing to do with & today we proved that beyond a reasonable doubt, I’m completely innocent.”
In court, the jury found that a former Miami Township Police Detective suppressed exculpatory evidence that led to Gillispie’s conviction for raping multiple women.
The evidence at trial showed that the detective created an unfair lineup of potential suspects, claimed a witness had made an identification when they had not, destroyed evidence showing Gillispie was out of town camping in Kentucky when 2 of the crimes occurred & altered witness’s audio recordings.
“The community was not safe when I went to prison because the person who committed this crime was still out here doing it & continued to do it,” said Gillipsie.
Gillispie was released in 2011 thanks to the Ohio Innocence Project. He spent 20 years of his life behind bars, time he says he will never get back but now, he’s focused on getting justice for other innocent prisoners.
“I’m not the first nor the last guy this is going to happen to, we have to fix this system to prevent this from happening,” said Gillispie.
Since his release, Gillispie now serves on the board of the Ohio Innocence Project & helps other formerly incarcerated people re-enter communities.

Antonio Brown is continuing to cross the line in his feud with Tom Brady -- this time, he posted a clearly photoshopped nude pic of Gisele Bündchen on social media.
The troubled ex-NFL receiver shared the image to his Snapchat on Monday ... showing Gisele's face edited on top of another woman's naked body.
A caption was not included, so there's no explanation behind the decision to take another shot at Brady's ex-wife. The slide was later deleted ... but screenshots of AB's post quickly made rounds on Twitter.
It's yet another example of AB burning his Brady bridge to a crisp -- he's completely turned his back on his former teammate in recent months, despite TB12's continuous support throughout his off-field troubles.
Brown has also posted several times about Brady's divorce from Gisele after 13 years together ... including a pic hugging Bündchen after the Bucs' Super Bowl win in 2021.
He also went the bad photoshop route another time ... by putting his face onto Brady's body as Gisele had her arms wrapped around him.
AB seemingly tried to expose Brady by sharing a text conversation from 2021 last week ... in which the 7-time champ called Brown out for acting like "a young immature man that is selfish, self serving, irrational and irresponsible."
Safe to say Brady's message didn't get through to AB.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Monday she would be pardoning past simple marijuana possession offenses for an estimated 45,000 people across the state.
The move will forgive more than $14 million in fines & fees linked to prior offenses.
The pardon applies to Oregon convictions for possession of an ounce or less of marijuana in cases before 2016, where the person involved was 21 or older, as long as possession was the only charge & there were no other victims.
State officials said the pardon will remove the records for 47,144 convictions for possession of a small amount of marijuana, "eliminating barriers for thousands of people seeking employment, housing & educational opportunities who have otherwise been ineligible."
The state said the pardon doesn’t apply to any other offense related to marijuana or other controlled substances.
“Oregonians should never face housing insecurity, employment barriers, & educational obstacles as a result of doing something that is now completely legal & has been for years," Brown said. "My pardon will remove these hardships. And while Oregonians use marijuana at similar rates, Black & Latina people have been arrested, prosecuted & convicted at disproportionate rates."
President Biden has been calling on governors to issue pardons for those convicted of state marijuana offenses, which reflect the vast majority of marijuana possession cases. Biden's pardon applies to those convicted under federal law & thousands convicted in D.C.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey sought a pause in executions and ordered a “top-to-bottom” review of the state’s capital punishment system Monday after an unprecedented third failed lethal injection.
Ivey’s office issued a statement saying she had both asked Attorney General Steve Marshall to withdraw motions seeking execution dates for two inmates and requested that the Department of Corrections undertake a full review of the state’s execution process.
Ivey also requested that Marshall not seek additional execution dates for any other death row inmates until the review is complete.
The move followed the uncompleted execution Thursday of Kenneth Eugene Smith, which was the state’s second such instance of being unable to put an inmate to death in the past two months and its third since 2018. The state completed an execution in July, but only after a three-hour delay caused at least partly by the same problem with starting an IV line.
Denying that prison officials or law enforcement are to blame for the problems, Ivey said “legal tactics and criminals hijacking the system are at play here.”
“For the sake of the victims and their families, we’ve got to get this right,” she said.

A gunman opened fire at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub late on Saturday, killing at least 5 people & injuring 18.
The suspected shooter was injured in the incident, apprehended & hospitalized, Colorado Springs Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Pamela Castro said at an early morning briefing Sunday. Police released no further information about the attacker.
The FBI was assisting on the scene, she said, adding, "we will be here for many many hours to come."
“We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman & ended this hate attack,” the nightclub, Club Q, posted on its Facebook page.
Club Q was hosting a “Drag Divas” show followed by a DJ night on Saturday, according to its Facebook page.
The motive of the attack was not immediately known.
In 2016, a massacre at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left 49 people dead & dozens injured.
MIAMI (Local10) – Flight attendant Marcelo Chaves appeared in a South Florida bond court on Thursday, 2 days after he was arrested at Miami International Airport.
That’s where he was getting off an American Airlines flight from Brazil with his live-in boyfriend & now listed co-defendant Ronald Maldonado.
When a CBP officer conducted a random check, they found that the 2 off-duty Delta flight attendants were packing more than travel clothes.
Pulled off the pair was Ketamine, Methamphetamine & GBL, a GHB substitute. It was discovered in 2 glass cosmetic bottles, a clear plastic bottle & in their luggage & there was enough that the couple is now facing felony drug trafficking charges.
They told investigators they were “doing drugs in Brazil” but didn’t know how the drugs got into the cosmetic bottles.
Delta Airlines released a statement, which read:
“Delta continually cooperates with law enforcement entities & the 2 off-duty flight attendants in question have been suspended pending outcome of an investigation.”
Chaves said he has been living in New York and New Jersey for last 12 years.
After hearing he was a flight attendant, the judge ordered a Nebbia hearing, known as a bail source hearing.
“You have to show the money used to post our bond is from a legitimate source of funds,” the judge told Chaves.
