SAYREVILLE, New Jersey (WABC) -- Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour, from Sayreville, was shot & killed in her car on Wednesday night.
Dwumfour, 30, was found inside her car with multiple gunshot wounds on Samuel Circle just before 7:30 p.m..
Police say they believe the Newark native was the intended target of the shooting, but do not have a clear motive.
They think her car traveled about 100 feet before slamming into two parked cars.
Dwumfour was elected to the council in 2022. The Republican defeated an incumbent Democrat to begin a 3-year term on the Borough Council.
She was also a business analyst & part-time EMT.
Gov. Phil Murphy said no one can remember the last time a sitting politician was fatally shot in the state.
"We can't remember who that is," Murphy said Thursday of the last elected official to be shot while in office. "It's just a shocking, shocking development."
"On behalf of the New Jersey Republican State Committee, I would like to express our horror & deepest sorrow at the senseless violence that claimed the life of Eunice Dwumfour," New Jersey Republican Chairman Bob Hugin said. "We will remember Eunice for her steadfast dedication to the community, as well as her deep and abiding Christian faith."
Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said the entire community is shocked & saddened.
"Eunice was a dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents. The fact that she was taken from us by a despicable criminal act makes this incident all the more horrifying," Kilpatrick said.
Sayreville Police & Middlesex County officials are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge in Wisconsin ruled Wednesday that a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the father of a man shot & killed by Kyle Rittenhouse during a protest in 2020 can proceed against Rittenhouse, police officers & others.
The father of Anthony Huber, 1 of 2 men shot & killed by Rittenhouse, filed the lawsuit in 2021, accusing officers of allowing for a dangerous situation that violated his son’s constitutional rights & resulted in his death. Anthony Huber’s father, John Huber, also alleged that Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, conspired with law enforcement to cause harm to protestors. John Huber is seeking unspecified damages from city officials, officers & Rittenhouse.
“While we respect the judge’s decision, we do not believe there is any evidence of a conspiracy and we are confident, just as a Kenosha jury found, Kyle’s actions that evening were not wrongful & were undertaken in self defense,” Rittenhouse attorney Shane Martin said.
Rittenhouse was charged with homicide, attempted homicide & reckless endangering for killing Anthony Huber & Joseph Rosenbaum & wounding a third person with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle in the summer of 2020 during a tumultuous night of protests over the shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake, by a white Kenosha cop.
Rittenhouse was acquitted of all charges in November 2021 after testifying he acted in self-defense.
Rittenhouse went to Kenosha from his home in nearby Antioch, Illinois, after businesses were ransacked & burned in the nights that followed Blake’s shooting. He joined other armed civilians on the streets, carrying a weapon authorities said was illegally purchased for him because he was underage.

Activists outraged over the shooting death of a 36-year-old double amputee demanded justice & accountability.
The Coalition for Community Control Over the Police & the family of Anthony Lowe Jr. held a news conference to bring awareness to Lowe's death.
"He was loved," his cousin, Ellakenyada Gorum, said as she sobbed. "And it's sad how these police are getting away with killing our African American people. Just getting away with it. He was in a wheelchair. What more could he do?"
Lowe's mother also spoke at the news conference, which was held outside the Huntington Park Police Department.
"They murdered my son, in a wheelchair with no legs," said Dorothy Lowe. "They do need to do something about it."
A spokesperson for the family said both of Lowe's legs were amputated at the knees. He was undergoing a mental health crisis when he was shot to death by Huntington Park police Thursday.
Police said they got a call that a man was stabbed by another man in a wheelchair. Officers said when they arrived on the scene they found Lowe with a 12-inch butcher knife.
Video taken by a passerby shows Lowe out of his wheelchair, trying to get away from police using his arms to propel himself along the ground.
In a statement, the department said officers tried to taser Lowe twice but to no avail.
Police said Lowe continued to threaten officers with the knife, prompting the fatal shooting.
Lowe's family said he couldn't have been a threat because he was in a wheelchair & they need more answers from law enforcement.
"You guys knew your lives wasn't in danger," said Gorum. "He's running on his limbs. How cold-hearted could they be?"

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Arlisha Boykins, a 22-year-old former assistant coach on the Churchland JV girls basketball team in Portsmouth, impersonated a 13-year-old player who played for the Truckers. The student-athlete was out of town at a club basketball tournament, parents of the girl said.
The JV head coach, along with the head coach of the varsity girls basketball team, have both been fired.
Sources tell 10 On Your Side that the varsity coach was “encouraging the behavior” during the game.
The game was Saturday, Jan. 21 in Suffolk against Nansemond River. Video shows Boykins wearing the number 1 jersey for Churchland, actively playing in the game. The child’s parent said she played under the student’s name.
WAVY confirmed Boykins is no longer an employee of Portsmouth Public Schools. Her last day of employment was Jan. 25. A school spokesperson said Churchland High School administration held a meeting with parents & players for both the JV & varsity team.
The players, along with parents, chose to opt out of the remainder of the season.
“Coaches always preach to the kids about integrity & those types of things, so I was just shocked,” the father of the 13-year-old said.

DETROIT (WXYZ) — On January 21, Armani Kelly who goes by the stage name Marley Whoop was scheduled to perform at a night lounge in Detroit. He texted his fiance that night saying the show was canceled and no one has seen or heard from him since.
"I don't want to be on Dateline in 20 years to find his body," Armani's mom Lorrie Kemp said.
Kemp posted flyers all around Lansing where Armani grew up hoping that someone would spot her son. She also tracked his car which shows it moved three times in Warren & ended up in a condo complex. The vehicle is now in police custody.
"I am doing everything I possibly can and I am out there hitting the roads, hitting the pavement. where is the police department? They didn't do their job," Kemp says.
Kemp feels that there was no sense of urgency from authorities to find her son until police agencies in multiple jurisdictions realized 2 other men were missing. Those men are Dante Wicker and Montoya Givens, other aspiring rappers who rode with Armani to the show.
“The fact that the three of them are missing together is very concerning and very alarming for us," said Michael McGinnis, Commander of Major Crimes with the Detroit Police Department.
Detroit police are investigating the situation but have not disclosed if they have any leads. Kemp fears the worst.
"I am angry because you did 8 years in prison & you didn't die & then you get out & they kill you. He's dead," she said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Another MPD officer involved in the Tyre Nichols investigation was relieved of duty.
According to Memphis Police Department, officer Preston Hemphill was suspended on Jan 15.
Unlike Hemphill, five other former officers involved were taken into custody on Jan 26.
Those former MPD officers are: Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmit Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith.
Those five are charged with: official misconduct thru unauthorized exercise of official power, official misconduct thru failure to perform a duty imposed by law, official oppression, second-degree murder, aggravated assault - act in concert, aggravated kidnapping causing bodily injury, and aggravated kidnapping while possessing a weapon.
It is unclear if Hemphill will be charged.
MPD said it is an ongoing investigation.

A Florida woman has launched a lawsuit against a school district because she was reportedly banned from volunteering at her child's school because she is an OnlyFans model.
Victoria Triece said she was banned from volunteering at Sand Lake Elementary in Orlando, Florida. Triece said she was banned from volunteering at her youngest child's school because she has an account on OnlyFans – a subscription social media platform that often features sexually-explicit content. Triece said the school only permitted her to participate in virtual events.
"I don't think any mom, any dad, anybody in the position that I'm in should be going through this," Victoria Triece said "Be told what you do in your private life will affect you seeing your children in any realm at all. It's just a, morally it's just wrong."
The mother explained, "The reason that I even started with OnlyFans was because I didn't want a 9 to 5. I wanted to still be involved."
Triece, 31, suspects that a fellow parent shared posts from her OnlyFans to the Orange County school board around 18 months ago.
WESH 2 reported, "Triece was a volunteer for five years, passed the annual background checks & does not have a criminal record."
Triece's attorney, Mark NeJame, told the outlet, "It's kind of like the old days of having a scarlet letter on your head. What she was doing, what she does in her off time, it’s not illegal. But yet, we have a morality police with the Orange County School Board and whatever administrators made this horrific decision."
He asked, "If they’re involved in multiple sex partners, are they prevented from seeing their children at school? If they work in the adult industry as a topless dancer or as a male dancer, are they prevented from seeing their children at school? Where does this stop?"

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (Local10) – A United States Marine was arrested Thursday after traveling to Brevard County to meet a minor for sex.
The suspect was identified as Sean Rudziewicz, 22, from Lancaster, California.
Rudziewicz started an online relationship with a 14-year-old girl. The 2 met using the app Omegle, an app that allows strangers to meet online through video chats.
Police said Redziewicz also used the messaging app Discord & Snapchat to further the relationship with the girl.
Rudziewicz flew into the Melbourne International Airport on Jan. 16 to celebrate his birthday & spend time with the girl.
Police said he took her to the movies, the mall & the beach during his stay in Florida.
The victim’s mother contacted Melbourne Police Department on Wednesday to report her daughter missing.
Police said the mother was able to go through messages on her phone & determine where she was & who she was with.
Officers found Rudziewicz and the girl at an America’s Best Value Inn hotel in West Melbourne, where he had sex with the girl on at least one occasion.
Police said upon arrival, they found Rudziewicz, who was hiding the teen under a bed.
Rudziewicz is facing charges of lewd & lascivious battery & felony interference with child custody.
He is being held at the Brevard County Jail on $70,000 bond.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis police officers assigned to the SCORPION Unit (Street Crimes Operations to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods) met with Chief C.J Davis on how to move forward for the department after the death of Tyre Nichols and it was decided that it was best to permanently deactivate the unit.
This decision was made in the process of listening intently to the family of Tyre Nichols, community leaders and the uninvolved officers.
The officers currently assigned to the unit agreed with this next step.
“While the heinous actions of a few cast a cloud of dishonor on the title SCORPION, it is imperative that we, the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing for all impacted. The Memphis Police Department remains committed to serving our community and taking every measure possible to rebuild the trust that has been negatively affected by the death of Mr. Tyre Nichols.”
Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorneys and attorneys to Tyre Nichols’ family Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci released a statement about the deactivation of the SCORPION UNIT.
“The Nichols family and their legal team find the decision to permanently disband this unit to be both appropriate and proportional to the tragic death of Tyre Nichols, and also a decent and just decision for all citizens of Memphis. We hope that other cities take similar action with their saturation police units in the near future to begin to create greater trust in their communities. We must keep in mind that this is just the next step on this journey for justice and accountability, as clearly this misconduct is not restricted to these specialty units. It extends so much further.”
