Video After The Jump There's no rest for the weary when you're a top notch artist with an album about to drop. Lloyd Banks took the stage at the Funkmaster Flex Car Show yesterday (October 3) in Providence, Rhode Island right after landing from a nine hour flight from Switzerland. Denna Cruz of Hot 106 caught up with the PLK backstage to chop it up for a few minutes about his album 'HFM2'. "I got in with Kanye in the studio, I did two joints with him," Banks said. "I did one for his G.O.O.D Friday series, Christian Dior Denim Flow. And I did another one for my album. I don't know the line up yet, but it's serious." Banks also talks about his big release date going up against Nicki Minaj and one week after Kanye West's new album drops. "You know it's interesting how this all happened this way. At the end of the day it's good to be in the store period around that time when all the big artists are coming out. I think we all have separate core [fan] bases within the same audience," Banks explained. "I don't think there's anyone that likes me, that doesn't like Kanye. Nicki's a brand new artist, so I definitely tip my hat to what she's doing." 'HFM2' in stores November 23. twitter-5d.gif

NEW YORK (Billboard) – The nominees for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards won't officially be revealed until December 1. But with the eligibility period having closed on September 30, the contenders are now clear, with early favorites and intriguing storylines already emerging. According to Billboard's survey of record executives and industry observers, the 2011 Grammys will likely field its strongest and most competitive collection of record and song of the year nominees in recent memory. While this may lead to a Grammy night filled with memorable, over-the-top performances, it's bittersweet news for the industry, as it mirrors the shift in the marketplace away from albums and toward the less profitable commodity of singles. Many experts project Eminem as this year's potential across-the-board winner, as his album sales remained strong in 2010. Here's a preview of possible nominees in the four main categories: SONG AND RECORD OF THE YEAR Nearly everyone surveyed agreed this was a superb year for singles, especially for pop. There was also consensus that four songs would face off on February 13, 2011, for song and record of the year: Eminem and Rihanna's collaboration, "Love the Way You Lie"; Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now"; Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." "These are all formidable singles," says Warner Bros. senior vice president of digital Jack Isquith, who hailed them as "meaty, impressive, career-defining records." Other top tracks cited by multiple executives include Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" (eligible for record of the year but not for song), Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Usher's "OMG," Sade's "Soldier of Love," B.o.B's "Airplanes" and Florence & the Machine's "Dog Days of Summer." Last year, Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" won song of the year, and Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" took the record prize. ALBUM OF THE YEAR In the album of the year category, Eminem's "Recovery" is the clear favorite in a subpar field. "This is Eminem's year," says Billy Mann, who co-wrote and produced last year's showstopping Pink hit, "Glitter in the Air." "He brought his best game and then some. The public can feel it, and the industry can feel it." To date, "Recovery" has sold 2.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Los Angeles Times chief pop critic Ann Powers says Eminem's comeback story, as well as the fact that his album was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed, will resonate with Grammy voters. "He's a major figure in pop history," she says, "and he seems to have really grown into himself." Another leading contender is the Carole King/James Taylor album "Live at the Troubadour." While live sets historically have fared poorly with voters (1994's "MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett" is the last in-concert title to win the category), "I would watch out for that record," Glassnote Records head Daniel Glass says. The album has sold 453,000 copies since its May release. Other albums cited include Sade's "Soldier of Love," Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3," Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs," Usher's "Raymond v. Raymond" and two from recent Grammy winners: Herbie Hancock's "The Imagine Project" and Robert Plant's "Band of Joy." Powers thinks Sade's album is a strong bet. "It's a gold-plated release," she says. "It sold well (1.3 million copies), it was well received critically, and she's a classy artist." Last year, Taylor Swift took home the statue for "Fearless." BEST NEW ARTIST Two breakout acts, B.o.B and Mumford & Sons, were mentioned on multiple occasions as strong contenders for best new artist, but most believe it will be a battle between Drake and Justin Bieber, with Drake taking the award. Emerging stars Nikki Minaj and Bruno Mars are ineligible for nomination this year, because their album release dates fall outside of the eligibility period (September 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010) -- in Mars' case, by one week. Other possible nominees this year include Florence & the Machine, who got a big boost out of their MTV Video Music Awards appearance, and reality TV superstars Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert. Despite the success of Swift and the Zac Brown Band at last year's ceremony, many country observers say this year's crop of new artists is unlikely to garner many nods. Luke Bryan and Chris Young were both mentioned as long shots. Grammy voters didn't suffer from a lack of options when it came to nominees -- according to Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, the academy received almost 20,000 submissions this year, a new record. The nominees will be announced December 1 during the third annual "Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! -- Countdown to Music's Biggest Night" concert. The ceremony will air on CBS on February 13. Video After The Jump 1017 Brick Squad has a lot of momentum going right now, and CEO Gucci Mane plans to keep it that way. After listening to Travis Porter's song "Make It Rain" for the first time, Gucci told the 107.9 on air personalities he would be interested in signing them. Gucci also talked about what Waka Flocka's work ethic makes him a great artist. "Waka know how to handle business...born hustler," Gucci said. "I didn't tell that boy to rap, boy rapped on his own. He seen an opportunity open up [and took it]." twitter-5d.gif

Incoming! Bottle hurtling towards Officer Ricky's head. Video After The Jump Officer Ricky Ross brought his show to the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY Friday (October 1), and got treated real rudely. I did some research and found out only 400 tickets were sold for the show at an arena that holds about 3050 people. The ones that did bother coming, were not feeling the former Correctional Officer. MeethaDealerTV caught the footage as one fan tried to rush the stage, shortly afterwards a couple of bottles were thrown at Ross, with one barely missing his head! Ahh man homie... twitter-5d.gif

Video After The Jump I don't know who's crazier, the group that claims being buried alive for 20 minutes will cure you of stress and depression, or the people lining up to try it. This extreme form of therapy is being practiced in Russia by Enlightenment Territory. Willing participants pay $160.00 for the opportunity to literally take a dirt nap. "Once your face is covered with earth, you start tasting it and thinking, 'what the hell am I doing down here?' But once you calm down there's simply no other place like this," says one "death" trainer. As I watched this video, the one thing I didn't see was any proof that the people who run Enlightenment Territory, have any formal training as a doctor, or psychotherapist. Are they equipped to resuscitate a person if their heart stops while underground, breathing only through a garden hose? I didn't see one defibrillator or oxygen tank anywhere around. Maybe all of that is in the fine print of the contract you sign before allowing this to happen, if there is a contract. "Panic conditions can be subconscious, uncontrollable. There are different ways to overcome them," says ET Director Andrey Gorbov. "Working with mental images, rhythm, breathing. There is an array of means for a person to subdue their fear. We teach them that," Gorbov also recommends you not try this at home because it could be dangerous, if the dirt is not distributed properly along the body. The maximum burial time is 40 minutes, beyond that the mind struggles to cope with the lack of function. The maximum burial depth is one foot. This all sounds entirely insane to me and I damn sure wouldn't try it, would you? twitter-5d.gif

Kanye West, surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women at his feet, delivered a great performance of "Power". Ye' changed the 2nd verse, removing the SNL diss heard in the original version. Don't expect retired NBA star turned tv analyst, Charles Barkley and NBA player Lebron James to hang out with each other anytime soon. Barkley has been a very vocal critic of Lebron's decision to leave Cleveland for Miami. Now he's ripping Bron for saying race had something to do with the media backlash he got after the big decision. "It’s like watching a movie. Just when you think it couldn’t get any stupider, it gets more stupid,” Barkley told SRI. Barkley goes on to further question King James' decision making, and ESPN's continued coddling of the star. "Sometimes you just say he’s making bad decisions and you’re like okay, he’s gonna get it together. Then he makes more bad decisions. The thing that’s interesting about LeBron, I don’t think Magic, Michael, and myself, we said we wouldn’t have did it. That’s not a criticism. We were asked a question. I don’t want to play with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, or Michael, I want to beat them. That’s strictly basketball. The only criticism I’ve heard about LeBron and it was my biggest criticism, that decision thing was just stupid. It was stupid. The second thing when they all came out there dancing around on stage, that was silly. That’s the only thing I’ve heard LeBron get criticized about. That has nothing to do with race. That’s what makes this last thing so stupid. That’s stupid. The only criticism of LeBron has been the decision and the one hour of our life that we can’t have back. And ESPN, oh my God. Oh my God. To go down to training camp and report everyday is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. I’m watching yesterday and one of the guys actually said LeBron looked fierce in practice. I’m like fierce in practice? What the hell does that mean? He was fierce in the second day of training camp. You’re like come on man, he really didn’t say that did he. This summer with LeBron and all the stuff that went on is like a bad movie. You just can’t make this stuff up.” Barkley is entitled to his opinion, but I think he's being too critical of James. Barkley was no choir boy when he played. James is young and will learn from his mistakes. Hopefully without Charles Barkley constantly on his back. twitter-5d.gif

Video After The Jump Excuse my ignorance on the sport of bullfighting. I had no idea there were females that did this. It's never easy to watch any fighter get gored by an 1100 pound bull, but watching it happen to a female was especially tough. Noelia Mota suffered severe head, cervical, thoracic and abdominal injuries last Sunday (October 26), when the horse she was riding lost its balance and she was gored by a bull in Marbella, Spain. Noelia is currently in a medically induced coma, while doctors try to reduce swelling to her brain.

Video After The Jump I'm really digging the trend of rappers using bands in concert and live television appearances. It shows the progression of hip hop, from when performances were strictly two turntables and a mic. While I see nothing wrong with the latter, I do think live bands will become more the norm, and will free the dj up to do more cutting and scratching. All that leads up to is me saying Drake was exceptional on Late Show With David Letterman last night (October 1). Where he performed "Show Me A Good Time" from his debut album 'Thank Me Later.' How do you guys feel about live bands vs just the mc and his dj? twitter-5d.gif

Video After The Jump Houston rapper Tow Down was doing it really big until a snitch helped poilce bring him down. Tow Down, real name Bryan Theriot and his brother/manager Bernard were arrested yesterday (October 1), by police at their Missouri City crib. The raid yielded 850 Hydro plants, weighing 5000 pounds, worth an estimated $4.2 million dollars. "Water pumps, timers, artificial lighting equipment. The entire second story of the house had been professionally constructed by plumbers and electricians," said Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force Capt. Rodney Glendening. Cops were alerted to the brother's weed growing operation by dealers they busted several months earlier. "We started at the street level and worked our way up," Glendening said. "We consider this a professional grow. This is a 5,000-square-foot home. There were six rooms full of marijuana." In addition to the high grade pot, po po's found cocaine and hydrocodone. Tow Down is probably best known for his song "Country Rap Tune", recorded with late rapper H.A.W.K. This is the second time the rapper has been busted for growing weed. In 2008, the brothers were arrested for a much smaller growing operation. They were out on bond at the time of this latest arrest. twitter-5d.gif
