Meryl Streep plays a witch in the upcoming film, Into the Woods, which also stars Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and James Corden.

In preparation for her role, Streep had to learn how to rap. Corden told The Sun that not only did the three-time Oscar-winning actress do a great job, she also reminded him of a hip hop icon.

"She's less an Eminem, more a 50 Cent type. Mainstream with an edge. A second career beckons," he joked.

SEOUL, South Korea (Associated Press) — A ferry carrying 459 people, mostly high school students on an overnight trip to a tourist island, sank off South Korea's southern coast on Wednesday, leaving nearly 300 people missing despite a frantic, hours-long rescue by dozens of ships and helicopters. At least four people were confirmed dead and 55 injured.

South Korea Ship Sinking

The high number of people unaccounted for — likely trapped in the ship or floating in the ocean — raised fears that the death toll could rise drastically, making it one of South Korea's biggest ferry disasters since 1993, when 292 people died.

South Korea Ship Sinking

One student, Lim Hyung-min, told broadcaster YTN after being rescued that he and other students jumped into the ocean wearing life jackets and then swam to a nearby rescue boat.

"As the ferry was shaking and tilting, we all tripped and bumped into each another," Lim said, adding that some people were bleeding. Once he jumped, the ocean "was so cold. ... I was hurrying, thinking that I wanted to live."

South Korea Ship Sinking

Local television stations broadcast live pictures of the ship, Sewol, listing to its side and slowly sinking as passengers jumped out or were winched up by helicopters. At least 87 vessels and 18 aircraft swarmed around the stricken ship. Rescuers clambered over its sides, pulling out passengers wearing orange life jackets. But the ship overturned completely and continued to sink slowly. Within a few hours only its blue-and-white bow stuck out of the water. Very soon, that too disappeared.

Some 160 coast guard and navy divers searched for survivors inside the ship's wreckage a few kilometers (miles) from Byeongpung Island, which is not far from the mainland. The area is about 470 kilometers (290 miles) from Seoul.

Those rescued — wet, stunned and many without shoes — were brought to nearby Jindo Island, where medical teams wrapped them in pink blankets and checked them for injuries before settling them down on the floor of a cavernous gymnasium hall.

South Korea Ship Sinking

The ship had set sail from Incheon, a city in South Korea's northwest and the site of the country's main international airport, on Tuesday night for an overnight, 14-hour journey to the tourist island of Jeju.

South Korea Ship Sinking

Three hours from its destination, the ferry sent a distress call at about 9 a.m. Wednesday after it began listing to one side, according to the Ministry of Security and Public Administration. Officials didn't know what caused it to sink and said the focus was still on rescuing survivors.

South Korea Ship Sinking

Lee Gyeong-og, a vice minister for South Korea's Public Administration and Security Ministry, said 30 crew members, 325 high school students, 15 school teachers and 89 non-student passengers were aboard the ship.

Kang Byung-kyu, a government minister, said two of the dead were a female crew member and a male high school student. He said a third body was also believed to be that of a student. A coast guard officer confirmed a fourth fatality but had no immediate details about it.

Kang said 164 people were rescued, of whom 55 were injured. Officials said 292 people were missing.

Yonhap news agency said the 146-meter (480-foot) -long ship, which travels twice a week between Incheon and Jeju, was built in Japan in 1994 and could carry a maximum of 921 people, 180 vehicles and 152 shipping containers.

The water temperature in the area was about 12 degrees Celsius (54 Fahrenheit), cold enough to cause signs of hypothermia after about 1½ hours of exposure, according to an emergency official who spoke on condition of anonymity citing department rules. Officials said mud on the ocean floor made underwater search operations difficult. Lee, the vice minister, said the ocean is 37 meters (121 feet) deep in the area.

South Korea Ship Sinking

Passenger Kim Seong-mok told YTN that he was certain that many people were trapped inside the ferry as water quickly rushed in and the severe tilt of the vessel kept them from reaching the exits. Some people urged those who couldn't get out to break windows.

Kim said that after having breakfast he felt the ferry tilt and then heard it crash into something. He said the ferry operator made an announcement asking that passengers wait and not move from their places. Kim said he didn't hear any announcement telling passengers to escape.

The students — half of them boys and half girls— are from Danwon High School in Ansan city, which is near Seoul, and were on their way to Jeju island for a four-day trip, according to a relief team set up by Gyeonggi province, which governs the city. There are faster ways to get to Jeju, but some people take the ferry from Incheon because it is cheaper than flying. Many South Korean high schools organize trips for students in their first or second years, and Jeju is a popular destination. The students on the ferry were in their second year, which would make most of them 16 or 17.

South Korea Ship Sinking

At the high school, students were sent home and parents gathered for news about the ferry.

Park Ji-hee, a first-year student, said she saw about a dozen parents crying at the school entrance and many cars and taxis gathered at the gate as she left in the morning.

She said some students in her classroom began to cry as they saw the news on their handsets. Teachers tried to soothe them, saying that the students on the ferry would be fine.

The Maritime Ministry said the two previous deadliest ferry disasters were in 1970 when 323 people drowned and in 1993 when 292 people died.

Video And Pics After The Jump

KRAMATORSK, Ukraine (Associated Press) — In the first Ukrainian military action against a pro-Russian uprising in the east, government forces said they repelled an attack Tuesday by about 30 gunmen at a small airport.

The clash came hours after Ukraine's acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, had announced an "anti-terrorist operation" against the armed, pro-Russian insurgents who had seized control of numerous buildings in at least nine cities in Ukraine's restive east.

12350755478?profile=original

Oleksandr Turchynov

The central government has so far been unable to rein in the insurgents, who it says are being stirred up by paid operatives from Russia. The insurgents are demanding broader autonomy and closer ties with Russia, and, complicating the political landscape, many local security forces have switched to their side.

Vasyl Krutov

The clashes Tuesday came at Kramatorsk airport, just south of the city of Slovyansk, which is 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the Russian border. The city has come under the increasing control of the gunmen who seized it last weekend.

The precise sequence of events in Kramatorsk was mired in confusion amid contradictory official claims.

Ukraine's security services anti-terrorist unit chief, Gen. Vasyl Krutov, speaking outside Kramatorsk airport, said his men managed to thwart an attack by fighters in green military uniforms without insignia who tried to storm the facility in the late afternoon.

Ukraine

An Associated Press reporter and camera crew at the airport heard rounds of gunfire at the time.

After the armed standoff, hundreds of local people surrounded the airport in response to rumors that government troops were planning to launch a military operation on the city of Kramatorsk itself. Some in the crowd attempted to enter the military facility, prompting Ukrainian troops to fire bursts of warning shots.

There were conflicting reports of casualties. Yury Zhadobin, coordinator of a pro-Russian defense force, said two people were slightly injured and were taken to a hospital. Russian media, without sourcing, claimed anywhere from four to 11 casualties at the airport. Ukraine's government said there were no casualties and added that Ukrainian forces took an unspecified number of militiamen prisoner.

Ukraine

In an attempt to defuse the standoff, Gen. Krutov came out to speak to the crowd of people picketing the airport but was attacked by them.

140415100130-01-ukraine-0415-horizontal-large-gallery.jpg

While he spoke of repelling an attack, the new government in Kiev declared that its forces had recaptured the airport from militiamen.

12350756284?profile=original

"I just got a call from the Donetsk region: Ukrainian special forces have liberated the airport in the city of Kramatorsk from terrorists," Turchynov told parliament. "I'm convinced that there will not be any terrorists left soon in Donetsk and other regions and they will find themselves in the dock - this is where they belong."

Ukraine

The United States on Tuesday gave its tacit support to Ukrainian military action against pro-Russian militia. This is not the preferred option, White House spokesman Jay Carney said, but the Ukrainian government has to respond to what he said was an untenable situation.

What was clear is that the area bordering Russia is getting increasingly armed and unstable. Russia itself also has tens of thousands of troops stationed along the border, which Western officials say is adding to the instability.

Earlier Tuesday, an Associated Press reporter saw at least 14 armored personnel carriers with Ukrainian flags, helicopters and military trucks parked 40 kilometers (24 miles) north of the city. Other heavy military equipment appeared nearby, along with at least seven busloads of government troops in black military fatigues.

Ukraine

"We are awaiting the order to move on Slovyansk," said one soldier, who gave only his first name, Taras.

Ukraine

Two of the helicopters loaded with troops were later seen taking off and flying toward Slovyansk. Witnesses said helicopters delivered several dozen troops to the Kramatorsk military airfield.

The clash was viewed entirely differently by Ukraine and Russia.

Ukraine's ex-prime minister and presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko said Tuesday what Kiev was seeing in the country's east was, in effect, a war.

Yulia Tymoshenko

Yulia Tymoshenko

"We have to tell the Ukrainians the truth: The Russian Federation is waging a real war against Ukraine in the east, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in particular," she said.

She called on the West to "recognize Russia's aggression against eastern Ukraine as a war."

Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Yarema also accused Russia of sending its troops to Ukraine, saying Kiev has "evidence that those people occupying Slovyansk and Kramatorsk right now are servicemen of the Russian 45th Airborne Regiment."

Ukraine's security services also identified one of the leaders of the pro-Russian operation in Slovyansk as a Russian foreign intelligence agent named Igor Strelkov, who it said also coordinated Russian seizures of military facilities in Crimea.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, dismissed all those claims as absurd.

12350638090?profile=original

Vladimir Putin

Late Tuesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the Ukrainian military operation, saying it was "criminal to fight with your own people as they speak out for their legal rights." The ministry called on Russia's "international partners" to condemn the new Ukrainian government's actions.

Russia has strongly warned Kiev that if it uses military force it could prompt Moscow to walk out of Thursday's international conference on Ukraine in Geneva.

The events in Ukraine helped pushed global stock markets down as investors worried that the West might scale up sanctions against Russia. The DAX index in Germany, which has strong trade ties with Russia and imports a third of its gas from the country, fell 1.8 percent while Moscow's MICEX slumped 2.5 percent.

Ukraine's currency, which last week hit a record low against the dollar, was stabilized after the central bank hiked interest rates.

Video After The Jump

A Missouri man is waiting to hear whether or not he will have to serve time for a crime he was convicted of in 2000.

St. Louis resident Cornealious "Mike" Anderson was convicted of the armed robbery of a Burger King manager and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He posted bail, went home and waited for authorities to contact him to let him know where to report to begin his sentence.

The call never came. Meanwhile Anderson moved on with his life. He got married, had four kids, joined a church, stayed out of trouble with the law and started a contracting business. He continued living in the St. Louis area.

Last summer state prison officials started processing the paperwork for Anderson's release when they realized he wasn't incarcerated.

A team of Swat members were sent to Anderson's home and took him into custody.

Anderson and his wife, LaQonna, are hoping by some miracle the Attorney General decides not to make him serve the time he was originally sentenced to.

LaQonna Anderson wants her husband freed

"I'm hoping that there is a way for them to save face while still allowing him to stay free," Patrick Michael Megaro, Anderson's attorney, told the New York Daily News on Tuesday. "He's no legal expert. He relied on his lawyer. This man is not a fugitive. He didn't try to hide."

An online petition has been started at change.org in the hopes Anderson will be freed. So far it has gathered more than 18,742 signatures.

Should Anderson still have to spend 13 years in prison?

**UPDATE** May 6

12350760061?profile=original

Cornealious (Mike) Anderson walks out of the Mississippi County Courthouse along with his wife, daughter Nevaeh, 3, and grandmother.

Cornealious "Mike" Anderson had been sitting in a maximum security Missouri prison cell since last summer hoping that the justice system would realize that he'd become a changed man since his armed robbery conviction 13 years ago.

Anderson was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 13-years in prison, but a clerical error left him a free man until the state discovered the error and arrested him.

The St. Louis resident had gotten married, stayed out of trouble and had four kids during the time he was free. On Monday, May 5, Anderson and his family heard the words they had hoped and prayed for.

"You've been a good father. You've been a good husband. You've been a good taxpaying citizen of the State of Missouri," Judge Terry Lynn Brown said, granting Anderson's request for release.. "That leads me to believe that you are a good man and a changed man."

12350760255?profile=originalCornealious (Mike) Anderson hugs his grandmother after being freed

Anderson said the hardest thing was watching his family go through this difficult period. He never allowed any of his children to visit him in prison.

"I don't think any child should have to see their father or loved one like that," he said on "Today." "I didn't want my children to feel that that was normal, something that's acceptable."

After spending the last nine months in a prison cell Anderson is now reunited with his family.

12350760491?profile=original

"I'm so thankful, thank God for everything," Anderson said outside of the courthouse.

Police dash cam footage captured the moment Maquoketa, Iowa Police Sgt. Brendan Zeimet nearly lost his life in a gun battle with a deranged man with an assault rifle.

Zeimet noticed 30-year old Aaron E. Scott parked in the wrong direction on the side of the road at 3 a.m. on April 1. As he approached the vehicle Scott exited it with an assault rifle in hand. Zeimet saw Scott's weapon and opened fire, sparking a gun battle between the two.

“Scott discharged his SKS assault weapon at least 14 times and as many as 19 times,” investigators told WQAD.

12350773454?profile=original

Aaron E. Scott died from a self-inflicted gunshot following shootout with police.

Zeimet was hit in the forearm and Scott was shot in the leg. The officer was cleared of any wrongdoing following an investigation

"It's not until Sgt. Zeimet gets closer, about 5 to 8 feet away and clears his door and he sees Aaron Scott holding the assault rile," Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations Agent Matt George told KCRG-TV.

After the gun battle Scott hopped back into his truck and took off. He was later found dead inside his overturned truck from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police say Scott had a history of mental illness and alcohol abuse. He had an argument with his girlfriend the night of the confrontation with police, which may have caused his erratic behavior.

The dash cam video was released Monday, April 14, as part of the conclusion into an investigation into the incident.
