(Reuters) U.S. President Barack Obama, in a podcast posted online on Monday, used the N word to emphasize his point that the United States has made progress in eliminating racism but there was still more work to do.
Obama discussed race and gun control as part of the hour-long podcast interview, in the aftermath of the shooting deaths a week ago of nine black people at a church in South Carolina, allegedly by a 21-year-old white man with racist sentiments.
"I always tell young people in particular: 'Do not say that nothing's changed when it comes to race in America unless you lived through being a black man in the 1950s or '60s or '70s,'" Obama told Mark Maron, host of the "WTF" podcast.
He said the legacies of slavery and discrimination were still "part of our DNA that's passed on."
"We're not cured of it ... and it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say 'nigger' in public. That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination."
"Societies don't just overnight completely erase everything that happened two to 300 years prior."
Obama said one of the darkest days of his presidency was another shooting incident: The December 14, 2012, slayings of 26 people at a school in Connecticut by a 20-year-old man.
"I tell you, right after Sandy Hook, Newtown, when 20 6-year-olds were gunned down and Congress literally does nothing, yeah, that's the closest I came to feeling disgusted," he said. "I was pretty disgusted."
As part of the interview, taped on Friday just ahead of Father's Day, Obama also discussed fatherhood and the frustrations of his job.
"Some of the mythology about me being very professorial, removed, that stuff ... I think it has to do with me not schmoozing enough in Washington because I've got two kids," he said. "And it's true that I don't do the cocktail circuit."

Lil Bibby recently chopped it up with Hip Hop's Revival.
Lil Bibby is easily one of the most popular artists coming out of Chicago right now. He has been working hard trying to make his mark on the game. We recently linked with him for an exclusive interview and he told us “he wanted to be remembered like Pac & Jay Z”.
Bibby is currently working on his new mixtape, “Free Crack 3” and it is scheduled to be released in July. He says Free Crack 3 will be the last of his “Free Crack" mixtape series. He also told us that this project has a “classic feel to it” and it has some big production.
Bibby also talked about Spike Lee’s new film Chiraq. He hopes that the movie shows what Chicago is really like.

Adrien Broner is at a crossroads in his career. Once considered to be the heir apparent to fill Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s shoes as boxing's biggest attraction, the Cincinnati native has lost two of his last five fights, including Saturday's bout against Shawn Porter.
Adrien Broner dancing on his way to the right to fight Shawn Porter at the MGM Grand In Las Vegas
Despite his past missteps, "About Billions" could resurrect his career, but he's going to have to convince the fans who buy tickets that he's worth watching again. To do that he might have to drop down to the 140-pound light welterweight division and beat a series of quality opponent.
He's currently campaigning in the 147-pound welterweight division but both Marcos Maidana and Porter (he fought Porter at a 144 pound catch weight) proved he's not physically strong enough to fight in that weight class.
Marcos Maidana watches after knocking Adrien Broner to the canvas in their December, 2013 fight.
One interested observer is Floyd Mayweather Sr. Broner held his training camp for the Porter fight at the Mayweather Boxing Club.
Floyd Sr. has watched him up close and believes his out of the ring activities are affecting him negatively. Read what he told Boxing Scene about Broner.
"I'll be honest with you, I voted for Broner. I was thinking Broner was going to win. You cant keep making excuses for people. You can't keep making excuses. if he knows that there is something that he didn't do right, he knows right from wrong. If he did it wrong and got his ass whopped, that's what is supposed to happen," Mayweather Sr. told BoxingScene.com.
"He's not no top ranked fighter, in the rankings. He held all night. Broner looked like nothing. All that grabbing and holding. With all that stuff he does...the women...the drinking...all that stuff. He's not going to do nothing. He looked like a bum. First, he needs to learn how to fight. If he wants to learn how to fight, he needs to come see me - or else forget it, done. My whole saying is, it's my way or the highway and no other way.
"All the things Broner was saying, none of it was true. Don't get me wrong, I see where he's got ability, but with all the sh*t with these girls and drinking, he's never going to get nowhere."
At this point Broner probably regrets turning down that 5-year, $40 million offer from Roc Nation Sports.

Things have gotten so bad at Young Money Records, they are in danger of losing two of their biggest stars, according to a new lawsuit filed by Lil Wayne.
TMZ reports that Wayne is accusing Birdman of failing to pay some artist's profits and stiffing so many other people that Drake and Nicki Minaj are likely to leave the label.
Wayne signed both artists to his label, which is an imprint of Birdman's Cash Money Records and distributed by Universal Music Group.
The new lawsuit accuses Birdman of gross mismanagement. This is all part of a legal war between Weezy and the man he once considered a father figure.
In January the "Lollipop" hit maker filed a $51 million suit against Cash Money and Birdman, seeking to have his contract voided.

I would first like to say thank you to everyone who is interested in my journey and reading this. I hope I can be the inspiration someone can use to make a healthy lifestyle change to their life. I see myself as a talented DJ who was on the right path to success in music but just with music I was so unhealthy for years. Heart disease, over eating, lack of exercise along with high blood pressure. Majority of these diseases run in my family. If you don’t know I had a son who passed away from heart disease. I understand heart disease is the number one killer in America. Over 65% of America is obese and over 35% of America does not do any type of energetic activity. So I figured I could lead by example because I was once in those categories so here is my story.
I took myself away from social media for one year and noticed when I posted my first picture of the new me a number of people would ask, “how I did it” or say, “you look great”. I went from being 235lbs unhealthy with an enlarged heart and multiple symptoms from a heart disease known as CHF along with high blood pressure. I was taking multiple medications to combat these symptoms to working a diet and workout plan to then becoming healthier and having a doctor remove me from all heart and blood pressure meds and getting to a healthier weight of 165lbs. Although the pictures I take now are lean, tight and cut; before the muscle that I display today, I was flabby even with the initial weight loss. I first lost 50lbs of fat and muscle. I remember all I would do is tell my friends I'm just going to walk this fat off and I was heavily doubted as if I was the underdog. So I was sure to wake up and go walking for an hour, then another hour during mid day, and one more hour after sun down. I was not speed walking or anything that was very strenuous to me, due to the fact I had a bad ankle from surgery and lack of completing my rehab. At the time hard walking would hinder me and put me in pain so I did a slow pace softwalk of about 3 to 3 ½ miles an hour on average that was it. Im not trying to make it seem as if it was easy because I did have to completely change my diet as well. I took bread completely out of my diet and when it came to pasta and rices I tried to take those out too but those being my favorite foods, I would find myself cheating on multiple occasions due to my intensive cravings. So I would continue to add pasta or rice to my dishes but would only have two spoons or two forks full. I took all dressings out and ate a lot of salads with grilled chicken and used diced tomatoes and hot sauce as my new salad flavoring. I eliminated all sweets and did no desserts. For 6 months I stayed focused on this diet. I lost majority of the fat I had set to lose but then I found myself to be flabby but yet content and complacent with where I currently was with my body. I thought to myself Im skinny now I did it. I started to lift weights to build muscle but with my complacent behavior I noticed my body going back and fourth. I would cheat very often putting my body and weight off balance. I noticed that my eating habits was more than just focusing on a routine and following it. Instead I had a way of thinking that I've had since a baby boy. You see as a baby you cry then you get fed. I came to understand the thinking patterns I have practiced since adolescence. So with having an understanding of these thinking patterns I choose to challenge my thinking when it came to my eating habits. There are numerous of times throughout the day where I don’t feel good, don’t agree with something, tired or stressed and I came to realize that those are all eating triggers and I would actually challenge them. I plan on doing speaking engagements and really going in depth with the steps I used to challenge my negative thinking. This negative thinking would also play a part in my work out sessions because the days I didn’t have the motivation to go workout or thought I was good with the progress I’ve made, I had to tell myself not to get comfortable and remember how many times I had lost weight and failed. That was called my positive self talk and challenges there for giving me the data in my head I needed to continue with my work outs. I remember at 175 lbs with a flat stomach I was content telling myself this is the best I’ve ever looked. Even though those mental statements were true I also new I could keep working and do better there for challenging those negative thoughts and keep going. So I used the knowledge I had about myself and kept working daily only taking Sundays off and went from flat belly to working off 10 more lbs and having what some might call an eight pack. Now I have admires that tell me they love my body as I continue to workout and they love how healthy I eat. I’ve been told how although I practice healthy eating habits it is very reasonable to the average person to switch and not get grossed out. I have read psychology and drug treatment books and learned being unhealthy physically or bad eating habits normally stem from the same negative thinking patterns as drug abusers. So I tell myself daily, the same way a mental health Dr. that is focused and determined to change the world one mind at a time I am looking to spread my knowledge as well and hope I can be the motivation for the next person that is looking for a life change. I want to continue to DJ and do music but i would love to DJ in fitness gyms and do turn up workout classes so I can motivate that 37% to make a change. I want to motivate the people to come out to clubs and dance and not stand around come to the gym if you want to run or walk then dance and I want to be that guy and or DJ that motivates you to move.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- As soon as Andre Ward found his stride following his lengthy layoff, the fight quickly came to an end.
Ward made a triumphant return to the ring and delighted his home crowd when he stopped England's Paul Smith in the ninth round Saturday night in a none-title fight.
"It took some time to get the ring rust off," Ward said. "I started with the jab. I wanted to come out big bang and get a first round KO but I have a great coach and he told me to take my time and the knockout will come."
Ward (28-0, 15 knockouts) was fighting for the first time in 19 months because of a protracted legal dispute with his former promoter, the late Dan Goosen.
He dominated from the start against the former British champion Smith (35-6), winning every round on all three judges' scorecards. Smith's corner threw in the white towel to stop the fight in the ninth round with Smith's face covered with blood.
"I know there's another level I can be at where I'm not thinking about anything," Ward said. "There's another level of sharpness and being crisp that I have. ... I felt like I did good tonight but I know I have better."
Smith spent most of the fight in defensive mode, trying to block Ward's many punches instead of throwing many of his own. Smith did stagger Ward with a big right hand in the seventh, but Ward responded with a flurry and Smith was cut late in the round.
"I know what he was trying to do," Ward said. "He was trying to lure me in then hit me with the big right hand. He hit me with a couple of good shots but he didn't hurt me."
Ward landed more big punches in the eighth as blood started dripping down the left side of Smith's face. The round ended with a stare down between the two fighters to the delight of the partisan crowd of 9,016.
Another cut opened in the ninth as Smith's face was covered with blood before the fight was called at 1:46 of the round on a technical knockout after trainer Joe Gallagher threw in the towel.
"Smith was taking unnecessary punishment," Gallagher said. "Andre kept cutting open that cut over his eye. Blood was pooling over his eye. It was a war we didn't want to continue."
Smith said he thought he broke his nose on Ward's final combination before the fight was stopped.
"The towel couldn't have come soon enough," Smith said.
Ward had not fought since winning a lopsided unanimous decision against Edwin Rodriguez to defend his WBA super middleweight title in November 2013. The absence from the ring stemmed from the dispute with Goosen, who died in September 2014.
The fight was just Ward's second since beating Carl Froch in December 2011 in the Super Six super middleweight tournament final. Ward also dealt with a shoulder injury that forced him to the sideline before the dispute with Goosen.
After Goosen's death, Ward reached an undisclosed settlement with the promoter's family and signed with Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports. He was using the fight against Smith as a tuneup to work off some of the rust that had accumulated.
"I'm just so happy to be back in the boxing ring," Ward said. "It's been a long time. It was creeping up on two years."
Smith weighed in for the 172-pound fight at 176.4 pounds on Friday. ESPN reported Smith's weight was 184.4 pounds at a second weigh-in Saturday.
"It was a genuine mistake," Smith said. "I apologized to the team. My fault."
The bout brought out some big names, including NBA MVP Stephen Curry, who carried Ward's title belt into the ring before the fight. Curry got a thunderous ovation a day after the Golden State Warriors' championship parade. Seattle running back and Oakland native Marshawn Lynch, boxer Miguel Cotto and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick also were on hand, although Kaepernick was booed loudly by the East Bay fans who usually back the Raiders.
The co-feature between junior featherweights Antonio Nieves (12-0-1) and Stephon Young (13-0-2) ended in a split draw.

Adrien Broner lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Shawn Porter as his idol, Floyd Mayweather Jr., sat ringside Saturday, June 20, in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The fight was not pleasing to the eye. The two combatants stayed in the pocket the majority of the bout, but there was a lot of clenching and holding.
Referee Tony Weeks issued multiple warnings to Broner before finally taking a point from him in the 11th round of the non-title fight for fouling.
Broner's lone highlight came in the 12th round when he knocked Porter down with a left hook. Porter quickly got back to his feet and was able to finish to come away with the win.
In the end Porter simply outworked Broner putting an end to all of AB's pre-fight trash talk.
Porter won on scores of 114-112, 115-111, and 118-108. It was Broner's second loss in his last five fights, dropping his record to 30-2.
Porter's record now stands at 26-1-1.
Floyd spoke on the fight afterwards.
