ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Khabib Nurmagomedov stopped Dustin Poirier by submission in the third round Saturday night at UFC 242, retaining his lightweight title and unbeaten record.

After dominating Poirier with wrestling and grappling throughout the bout at Yas Island, Nurmagomedov (28-0) landed a rear naked choke and forced Poirier to tap midway through the third.

The Dagestan-born Russian fighter returned almost flawlessly for his first fight since beating Conor McGregor in October 2018. Nurmagomedov has stopped three of his last five opponents by submission, and he is challenging Jon Jones and Amanda Nunes for unofficial pound-for-pound supremacy in mixed martial arts.

“MMA is about respect, this is what we showed tonight,” Nurmagomedov said.

Nurmagomedov felt disrespected by McGregor and the Irish star’s friends before their bout, and that’s why he jumped into the crowd to brawl with the entourage after his victory last year. Nurmagomedov was suspended and fined by the Nevada Athletic Commission, and Poirier won an interim lightweight title during Nurmagomedov’s forced absence.

“There has been a lot of pressure on me recently,” Nurmagomedov said. “I now need a couple of days rest.”

Poirier (25-6) nearly finished Nurmagomedov with a guillotine choke early in the third round of a fight otherwise dominated by his opponent. Poirier held his interim title after beating Max Holloway in April for his fourth consecutive victory over elite lightweights.

But Nurmagomedov stands on another level entirely, and he appears to be one of the UFC’s most bankable stars.

“I feel like I let myself down,” Poirier said. “My career was set up for this moment. I was so prepared. I didn’t cut any corners. When I wake up, I need to take a look in the mirror.”

UFC President Dana White said Nurmagomedov’s next fight is likely to be against Tony Ferguson, the powerful lightweight who has been booked against Nurmagomedov several times in bouts that fell through due to injuries.

McGregor, who has unpersuasively claimed to be retired, offered his own idea for Nurmagomedov’s next bout on Twitter: “Book my rematch for Moscow.”

Nurmagomedov’s wrestling has been insurmountable for almost every opponent. He landed seven takedowns on Poirier, and he was in a position of control for nearly nine of the bout’s first 10 minutes. Nurmagomedov finished it by getting Poirier’s back shortly after escaping the guillotine.

Nurmagomedov has won his first 12 UFC bouts, a mark surpassed only by Anderson Silva in the promotion’s history.

The bizarre saga of Antonio Brown and the Oakland Raiders has taken another strange twist.

Earlier this week Brown threatened to hit general manager Mike Mayock in the face during a heated argument. The team subsequently fined Brown $215,073.53 for conduct detrimental to the team, according to ESPN.

That fine voided the $29M worth of guaranteed money in his contract.

Brown responded by asking to be released via his Instagram account on Saturday, September 7th. Shortly afterwards, the organization granted the wide receiver his wish.

Report via ESPN -- One of the biggest mixed martial arts fights of 2019 is set.

Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal will happen at UFC 244 on Nov. 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York, UFC president Dana White told ESPN's Brett Okamoto on Saturday. The welterweight fight will headline the event.

"It is the fight fans wanted to see," White told Okamoto. "Nate Diaz called out Masvidal after his win over [Anthony] Pettis. Everybody has been talking about it. People have been hitting me up on social media, telling me to get it done. I can now announce the fight is done."

It will not be a title fight, White told Okamoto, which is atypical for a main event.

"It's one of those fights that is fun, interesting, fans are into it, you want to see for five rounds -- yet it's too big to be a fight night," White told Okamoto. "So we made it a pay-per-view. I will end up stacking this card with killer fights. The main event will be those two."

The UFC will not book a title fight to MSG because, in White's words,"I would never put a title fight underneath this. There won't be a title fight [at MSG]."

The booking comes after a frenetic week of negotiations between the UFC and multiple fighters, sources say.

Late last week, the UFC tried to book UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington for the MSG headliner. After failing to come to terms with Covington on a deal, the UFC moved on and offered the title fight to Masvidal, according to sources. After coming to terms with Masvidal on Wednesday, the promotion was unable to strike a deal with Usman. That prompted the UFC to reach out to top contender Leon Edwards to see if he would be interested in fighting Masvidal for the vacant title after a threat was made to strip Usman.

The Houston, TX underground rap crew known as The Band of the Hawk Underground Pyramid (#BOHUP) comes through with their full-length LP titled Kangol, that was produced by Noah Archangel. Featuring 13 tracks, the guys of #BOHUP bring their A-game, delivering meaningful bars over dope lo-fi boom bap production. Highlights on the album include the light and airy, electric guitar-infused “Spirit Bomb” and the cool, calm and collective “Funny Bunny” that urges folks not to speak unless it’s about the money. The crew even takes it back to the days of skits in Hip-Hop with a witty one of their own titled “Phite Weoples.” Another track mentioning is the super smooth “Golden Child” where each member of the track gets a chance to tap into a more braggy flow that adds more dimension and versatility to the album. Along with Kangol on streaming services, #BOHUP also released exclusive CD's and limited vinyl that can be found on bandofthehawk.com. Check out Kangol and be on the lookout for upcoming videos on for the tracks “Bedrock,” “Spirit Bomb,” and “19 Mentality featuring AG Da Coroner.” dropped today.

Video After The Jump

Jalen Rose opened up to VladTV about people in Detroit having a strong dislike for Michael Jordan in the late 1980s and 90s when "The Bad Boys" of the Detroit Pistons, which included VladTV regular guest John Salley, were in full effect. Jalen explained that he rooted against Jordan for his whole career and then he got to play against him in the NBA. Despite his past views on Jordan, Jalen admits that Jordan is undoubtedly the greatest player of all time.

During the conversation, Jalen also shared his thoughts on John Salley saying that Pippen was the most skilled player that he ever played against. To hear more, including the time Jordan elbowed him in the head.

Report via TMZ -- Nicki Minaj's retirement announcement not only came out of nowhere, but it absolutely doesn't add up -- as in it doesn't seem real -- based on her recent actions ... so say sources close to her.

TMZ's learned Nicki has been busy in the studio working on new music in recent weeks and on top of that ... we're told she made plans to record with several artists just in the past few days.

Our sources say Minaj has a lot of songs already in the can, and despite saying on Thursday she's retiring in order to "have my family" -- she still has studio time booked until next month.

So, why the sudden decision to hang it up? We're told Nicki's been growing increasingly fed up with internet trolls who've been harassing her lately, and finally reached a boiling point.

Our sources say the rapper was pushed over the edge by constantly defending herself over accusations of not writing her own songs, questions about her hip-hop legacy ... and her relationship with her fiance, Kenneth Petty. BTW, rumor is she's already Mrs. Petty, but that's another thing Nicki's tired of discussing.

The good news for the Barbs ... we're told those close to Nicki believe she's just taking a much-needed break from the haters and simply needs a moment to chill and reevaluate.

One more thing -- Minaj's comment about family got many wondering if she's pregnant. We're told she's not ... yet.
