“I’ve seen him get very emotional,” said attorney Steve Greenberg, who is spearheading Kelly’s courtroom battle in Chicago on child pornography and sex abuse charges.
“He’s dealing with a lot of stories that have been made up. He’s not a fighter. I’ve seen him cry when he talks about the situation.”
But, Greenberg says, his client “is going to fight for the truth” to get out.
Kelly faces charges in multiple states and jurisdictions and is currently at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown.
Describing his client as “a soft-spoken guy” who is basically illiterate, Greenberg claims Kelly “has a stage persona who is used to having people around him all the time. His life in solitary is now minus TV. No radio. No music. And no books.
“He’s also a spiritual guy, has a Bible with him in his cell, but he can’t read it. It’s basically there for comfort,” Greenberg added.
“Now he’s been placed in the MCC’s ‘SHU’ — a cell in solitary confinement away from the jail population and is constantly being moved from cell to cell. He has only the guards to talk to.”
But he is hearing from fans.
“But he is receiving plenty of mail, which is 97% positive and he pores over it,” added Greenberg, who tells Sneed Kelly is able to recognize a few words and writes some words phonetically.

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say a 55-year-old Florida man pulled a gun on a late-arriving furniture delivery team, saying he’s “shot people for less.”
Manatee County Sheriff’s investigators say Mitchell Helton is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He was arrested Aug. 3 after the delivery team called the sheriff’s office.
The Bradenton Herald reports the delivery men called Helton to let him know they were on their way. When they arrived at his home, they say Helton was upset because it took them so long to arrive.
As they unloaded the furniture, deputies say Helton pointed a gun at them. The men tried to deescalate the situation and told him how to file a complaint.
An arrest report says Helton couldn’t explain why he confronted the men with a gun.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NBA player Sebastian Telfair was sentenced on Monday to 3 1/2 years in prison in his New York City gun case.
Telfair — a once highly touted point guard with a disappointing pro basketball career and a history of brushes with the law — had been convicted earlier this year of carrying a loaded handgun in his pickup truck.
“The mandatory prison sentence he received today is required by law and he has now been held accountable for the unlawful conduct,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement.
There was no immediate response to a phone message on Monday seeking comment from Telfair’s attorney.
Gonzalez said that a jury heard testimony describing how at 2:50 a.m. on June 11, 2017, officers in an unmarked police car spotted a Ford F-150 parked on a center median in Brooklyn with the 34-year-old Telfair at the wheel.
The officers stopped the truck after it made a U-turn in front of them and drove off with no headlights on. Seeing a lit marijuana cigarette in the console, they said they searched the vehicle and found a loaded .45-caliber pistol inside.
The Brooklyn-born Telfair was a first-round draft pick out of high school in 2004. He started with the Portland Trail Blazers and spent time with the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves and other teams before ending his career in China in 2014.
Telfair and a friend were arrested in 2007 after a traffic stop during which police found a loaded handgun in the vehicle. He pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon and was sentenced to three years’ probation.

Report via CBS News -- Authorities in Michigan may review a white police officer's fatal shooting of a black man in 2009 after an alleged Ku Klux Klan document was seen on display at the officer's house. Muskegon Police Officer Charles Anderson was placed on paid administrative leave after a house hunter who was viewing the officer's home said he saw a framed Ku Klux Klan application and multiple Confederate flags.
The Muskegon Police Department opened an internal investigation after Robert Mathis, who is black, posted a picture of the document on Facebook after touring Anderson's Holton-area home, which was for sale. "I was just so disgusted," Mathis told MLive.com. "I told my son, 'let's go, we're getting out of here. This is a Klan house, really, we have to go right now.' It was basically telling me, whites only to purchase his house."
Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson said the investigation's results will drive reconsideration of the 2009 case, according to MLive.com. "Whether or not officer Anderson has racist tendencies or not, would that move the needle one way or another? I guess I can't answer that question," Hilson told the newspaper. "I don't know. I need a completed internal investigation."
The paper reported that Anderson was cleared of fatally shooting a black man, Julius Johnson, 23, following a traffic stop in 2009. Johnson had scuffled with Anderson, who was beaten in the head.
Anderson said he feared for his life, according to the findings of an investigation report created by then-Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague. Following Mathis' allegations, Anderson, who has been on the force more than 20 years, was put on leave indefinitely, City Manager Frank Peterson said Thursday.
Anderson told MLive.com he was advised not to comment amid the investigation. His wife, Rachael Anderson, told WOOD-TV her husband isn't a Klan member.
"He can't say anything right now. I wish we could because it would probably set a lot of things straight," Rachael Anderson told the television station when a reporter came to the couple's door.
The police department is doing its due diligence with the investigation, Chief Jeffrey Lewis told MLive.com. Lewis was not sure if an officer keeping such items in his home would violate department policies.
"The emotional health and safety of this community is what is most important to me," Lewis said Friday, adding that the city and county "are very serious about this." The Muskegon Police Department Policy and Procedure Order states that officers' decorum and behavior should not "undercut public trust" in the department.
It also said officers shall "perform all duties impartially, without favor or affection or ill will and without regard to status, sex, race, religion, political belief or aspiration," according to MLive.com.
