In 2006 the National Basketball Association instituted a ridiculous rule that forces top high school hoop stars to play a year of college basketball before they can be drafted into the league. Disregarding the fact that players such as Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal, Rashard Lewis, Amar'e Stoudemire, Andrew Bynum and many others successfully made the transition prior to the rule.
Top prep star Emmanuel Mudiay is thumbing his nose at the NBA by passing on his scholarship to SMU, to play pro ball overseas in China. He's signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
Mudiay made another smart move by insuring himself in case of injury.
For China season, Mudiay has taken out significant insurance policies to protect future earnings against injury, source tells Yahoo.
$1.2 million for a 19-year old fresh out of high school for a single year of work is too much money to pass up. Here's hoping the 6'5", 200 pound guard is successful and goes on to have a great pro career.

Brooke Slocum and Charles Oppenneer were murdered after a Craigslist encounter

WYOMING, Mich. (Associated Press) — A pregnant Michigan teenager was strangled and her boyfriend was decapitated after apparently connecting with a stranger through the online service Craigslist for a sexual encounter, police said Monday.
The police chief in Wyoming, a Grand Rapids suburb, said that 18-year-old Brooke Slocum was held captive before her death. Her body was found Thursday in the trunk of the suspect's car. She was eight months pregnant.
Chief James Carmody says her boyfriend, Charles Oppenneer, 25, was found decapitated in a park a day earlier. His head hasn't been found.
It's likely that Oppenneer died of some kind of head trauma, but that couldn't be determined without his head being found, police said.
Emails indicate that Slocum connected with the suspect, 31-year-old Brady Oestrike, through a Craigslist ad and arranged a sexual encounter where Oppenneer would be present, according to investigators.
Brady Oestrike
Police got a search warrant for Oestrike's home, and he fled. He fatally shot himself after crashing his car, after which police found Slocum's body.
Carmody said it has been a "hellish environment" for officers as they investigated the various crime scenes, including Oestrike's home.
Investigators collected at least 400 items from Oestrike's home, including firearms, ammunition and knives. They also seized a number of electronics items and possessions from both victims.
Police said they plan to keep investigating to see if there were any other people involved in the killings.
"First and foremost we want to express our extreme love for Brooke ... and Audi (Slocum's unborn daughter), the truly innocent creation that was already so loved. We have no doubt that they are now dancing with Jesus. Yes, Brooke had made previous mistakes within the world that is online, including those that led to her involvement (with Charles Oppenneer) in this situation, Yes, the family tried to curtail, inform, protect and advise against the evils that this tragedy has brought forward. But God gave each of us free will, and that is something that no one can control. The secret part of Brooke's life that none of us knew about is a testament to that."

Kendrick Lamar lands on the cover of Complex's August/September 2014 issue. Topics covered in the cover story include the Compton emcee charging $250,000 for a guest verse and once receiving $400,000 to lay down vocals, the Macklemore Grammy Awards controversy, his recording process, hoping to top Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and more.
On Macklemore's The Heist winning Best Rap Album over GKMC
“It wasn’t really a huge deal for me. Macklemore deserves the accolades. That’s still my partner regardless. He probably didn’t need to Instagram the text. But what’s done is done.”
On recording 30 to 40 songs for his next album and trying to surpass GKMC
“If I keep focusing on, ‘I need to make something better than good kid,’ it’s going to be just that,” says Kendrick. “That’s not challenging yourself. I don’t want to become that person reflecting on what has been done. What I’m doing now is the question. I’m only as good as my last word, my last hook, my last bridge.”
The new album will arrive this year. Production will come from Top Dawg Entertainment's in-house producers, Tae Beast, Sounwave of Digi+Phonics and Dr. Dre.
When actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman passed away in February he left behind a sizable estate, estimated to be worth $35 million.
However, in his will he didn't leave any of it to children, son Cooper, 10, and daughters Tallulah, 7, and Willa, 5. Instead the entire fortune was left to his girlfriend and mother of the children, Marianne (Mimi) O'Donnell.
According to the New York Daily News, attorney James Cahill was appointed as the children's guardian. Cahill filed papers filed in Manhattan Surrogate Court, recalling a conversation he had with Hoffman's accountant, David Freidman.
"Specifically, Mr. Friedman recalled that (Hoffman) told him he did not want his children to be considered 'trust fund' kids. (Hoffman) advised Friedman that Mimi would take care of the children,"
The will was drafted in 2004 after his son was born. His only request was that his son be "raised in a city with art and culture." New York, San Francisco or Chicago were his preferences.
Hofffman was 46 years-old when he died of a heroin overdose.
