In 2006 the National Basketball Association instituted a ridiculous rule that forces top high school hoop stars to play a year of college basketball before they can be drafted into the league. Disregarding the fact that players such as Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal, Rashard Lewis, Amar'e Stoudemire, Andrew Bynum and many others successfully made the transition prior to the rule.
Top prep star Emmanuel Mudiay is thumbing his nose at the NBA by passing on his scholarship to SMU, to play pro ball overseas in China. He's signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
Mudiay made another smart move by insuring himself in case of injury.
For China season, Mudiay has taken out significant insurance policies to protect future earnings against injury, source tells Yahoo.

$1.2 million for a 19-year old fresh out of high school for a single year of work is too much money to pass up. Here's hoping the 6'5", 200 pound guard is successful and goes on to have a great pro career.
