Video After The Jump

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis intersection where George Floyd died was disrupted by gunfire Tuesday, just hours before it was to be the site of a family-friendly street festival marking the anniversary of his death at the hands of police.

Associated Press video from 38th Street and Chicago Avenue — informally known as George Floyd Square — showed people running and seeking cover as shots rang out. Police said one person later appeared at a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound, but it wasn’t immediately clear if that person was hurt in the incident near the intersection.

Philip Crowther, a reporter working for AP Global Media Services, which provides live video coverage to customers, reported hearing as many as 30 gunshots about a block east of the intersection. Crowther said a storefront window appeared to have been broken by a gunshot.

“Very quickly things got back to normal,” Crowther said. “People here who spend a significant amount of time, the organizers, were running around asking, ‘Does anyone need a medic?’ It seems like there are no injuries.”

Police said they responded to a reports of gunfire at about 10:10 a.m. at the 3800 block of Elliot Ave. South. Callers told police that a vehicle was seen speeding away from the area.

Soon after, someone went to nearby Abbott Northwestern Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said it wasn’t believed to be a life-threatening injury.

The family of a 21-year-old Black man found hanging from a tree in his girlfriend's Scott County yard three years ago will be awarded $11 million in a civil suit related to his death.

Willie Jones Jr., 21, was found hanging from a tree in front of his white girlfriend Alexis Rankin's home the night of Feb. 8, 2018.

Jones' family sued Rankin, her stepfather & several others for not acting to prevent Jones' death, according to court documents filed in December 2020 in the Hinds County Circuit Court. The lawsuit alleged stepfather Harold O'Bryant, with the help of others, either hanged Jones or failed to stop Jones from taking his own life.

Jill Collen Jefferson, one of the family's attorneys, said in a news release that Judge Winston Kidd awarded the family $11,391,662.40.

Evidence found during an independent investigation — done by the Bellinder Law Firm, Jefferson & the People’s Advocacy Institute, a Mississippi based organization dedicated to transformative justice in the South — contradicted an initial ruling of suicide.

“I’m thankful, but justice for my son will only come fully when criminal charges are brought," Tammie Townsend, Jones' mother, said in the release. "They must really pay for what they did to my baby.”

Jefferson said she and her team are now working to get the Scott County district attorney to reopen the case & bring criminal charges against O’Bryant & others involved in Jones' death.

“Willie’s death is just one example of how lynchings have never stopped,” Jefferson said. “And they keep happening, in part, because, until this verdict, there has been no accountability from anywhere for these absolutely heinous crimes. But this judgement is more than someone finally being held accountable.

"It is a first step to putting evil perpetrators on notice that we will come for you."

Two Louisiana men are accused of viciously beating & stabbing a woman’s alleged rapist, before shooting the alleged rapist's victim in the head. They then left her body in an abandoned Navy base to keep her quiet about the violence.

Dylan Craddock, 27, & Cody Matthews, 33, are facing charges of second-degree murder in the death of Brooke Buchler, 25, after her body was discovered at the abandoned base on August 23, just one day after she was reported missing.

Police said in the court documents that the men believed Buchler was “a liability,” after she witnessed them viciously attacking a man that she had accused of raping her. Both men are also facing charges of kidnapping & attempted murder in that attack.

Just days before she disappeared, New Orleans Police said Buchler had confided in several people that she had been raped by a man she knew.

Matthews & Craddock allegedly set out to seek retaliation. Buchler’s mother, Cristin Naquin told local station WWL that Craddock had been “good friends” with her daughter since high school & was “somewhat like a brother” to her.

The pair allegedly “severely beat” the man inside of Buchler’s apartment, stabbing him & leaving him for dead in a remote marshland. The man survived & was taken to a local hospital.

Investigators said Matthews & Craddock both fled to a hotel in St. Bernard Parish. Buchler had reportedly been with them at the hotel on August 21 before she disappeared & was found dead two days later.

Police said Craddock’s phone records show he had been in contact with Buchler on the morning of August 21 & later appeared to be in the area where Buchler’s body was discovered.

Both men were taken into custody on Sept. 3 in connection with the man’s kidnapping & attempted murder. Police said Matthews was recorded in a jailhouse phone call telling someone he “was present when Craddock killed Buchler.”

Craddock is currently being held on a $1 million bond. Matthews is being held on $625,000 bond.

Both men have pleaded not guilty.

LONDON (AP) — An activist who has played a leading role in anti-racism demonstrations in Britain was in critical condition in a London hospital on Monday after being shot.

The Taking the Initiative Party said Sasha Johnson, who played a leading role in Black Lives Matter protests last year, was shot in the head on Sunday. Police and a friend said it did not appear to be a targeted attack, though the party said Johnson had received “numerous death threats” related to her activism.

The party said Johnson was “a strong, powerful voice for our people and our community.”

The Metropolitan Police force said officers were called to reports of gunshots in the Peckham area of the city just before 3 a.m. on Sunday. Police said the shooting took place near a house where a party was taking place.

The police statement said a 27-year-old woman was in a hospital in critical condition after being shot. It did not identify her, but said “there is nothing to suggest it was a targeted attack or that the woman had received any credible threats against her before this incident.”

Detectives have appealed for witnesses and have not made any arrests.

A friend, Imarn Ayton, said she did not believe Johnson was the intended target.

“As far as we are aware, she was at a party,” she told the BBC. “There was a rival gang that may have heard about someone being in that party that they didn’t feel quite comfortable with or trusted and so they resorted to driving past and shooting into the garden, and one of those shots obviously hit Sasha Johnson.

“But I don’t believe she was the intended victim.”

Like other countries, Britain has faced an uncomfortable reckoning with race since the death of George Floyd, a Black American, at the knee of a U.S. policeman in May 2020 sparked anti-racism protests around the world.

Large crowds at Black Lives Matter protests across the U.K. called on the government and institutions to face up to the legacy of the British Empire and the country’s extensive profits from the slave trade. Johnson was a speaker at rallies last summer and is a leader of the newly founded, Black-led Taking the Initiative Party.

Video After The Jump

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis city leaders announced Sunday a $30,000 reward fund for information that leads to arrests in three recent shootings that killed one child & left two others critically injured.

The fund was organized by the Minneapolis Regional Chamber. At a press conference announcing the reward, Mayor Jacob Frey, Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, family members of the children & activists pleaded for someone from the community to step forward with information.

“I’m begging, again, please, if you know who these people are, contact me, this family or the Minneapolis police,” activist KG Wilson, whose granddaughter Aniya Allen died last week after being hit by gunfire in the backseat of a car, said. “Please, please, please, please, I’m begging you.”

“We will not protect killers of children, people who shoot children,” civil rights attorney & activist Nekima Levy Armstrong said. “It is time for a paradigm shift & for our community to feel safe."

Allen’s was the latest of the three shootings, which all took place in north Minneapolis in a less than three week span.

Ten-year-old Ladavionne Garrett Jr. was in the back seat of his parents’ car on April 30 when he was shot in the head. On May 15, 9-year-old Trinity-Ottoson Smith was at a birthday party when she was also struck in the head by gunfire.

Six-year-old Allen was also shot in the head while riding in her family’s car Monday on the way home from McDonald’s, Wilson said. She later died of her injuries at an area hospital.

“These are children who are loved,” Wilson said. “This little girl loved everybody.”

The Minneapolis Regional Chamber said up to $10,000 will be offered for information that leads to an arrest in each shooting.

“We will not stop until we find, locate & apprehend those who are responsible,” Arradondo said. “I am committed to making sure that this does not become our normal.”

“Every parent should have the ability to send their kid outside to play without the risk of getting hit by gunfire,” Frey said. “Every one of these kids deserves justice & that’s the direction that we all collectively need to be moving right now.

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — The family of a 6-year-old Southern California boy who was shot to death by another driver in a road-rage attack announced a $50,000 reward on Sunday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect.

The mother of Aiden Leos told KNSD-TV she was driving her son to school Friday morning when a white Volkswagen station wagon cut her off on State Route 55 in the city of Orange.

“As I was merging away from the carpool lane, I heard a loud noise and I heard my son say ‘ow’ and I pulled the car over as soon as possible, and he had been shot,” Joanna Cloonan, said. She said the bullet went through the trunk and struck her son, who was strapped into his booster seat in the rear passenger side.

“I tried to save him by calling 911, but he was losing a lot of blood... he just didn’t deserve that. No one deserves that.”

Reyes Valdivia, who along with his wife pulled over to help, said Cloonan told them she “flipped off” the car, and when she started transitioning to the right, the suspect vehicle slipped behind her before one of the occupants fired the shot.

Investigators believe a man and a woman were inside the Volkswagen at the time of the shooting.

The California Highway Patrol asked for assistance from any drivers who were on that section of freeway between 7:55 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., especially if their vehicles have dashboard cameras.
