With his independently released mixtape So Far Gone, Drake went from digital dynamo (2,000 downloads in ten minutes) to Grammy nominee all before he signed on any dotted lines. Or maybe not: While a major-label bidding war supposedly raged, rumor had it that he was already signed to Young Money/Universal. Either way, the excitement around his quick, seemingly unassisted rise translated into true stardom. And today, a number of up-and-coming rappers, eager to re-create his magic, are at pains to represent themselves as boot-strapping independent artists — even when they’ve got freshly inked major-label deals.

This phenomenon existed before Drake. “I was over at Interscope when we signed Souljah Boy,” recalls Archibald Bonkers, manager of Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs and A&R for HHH Artists from 2004 to 2007. “At the first radio meeting after he was signed, [the label decided to] do nothing. They didn’t want to mess with the grassroots.” But recent examples of rappers who have secretly signed to labels while continuing to market themselves suggest that the trend’s truly taking hold among those still trying to make their break. The idea is simple: Artists market themselves gradually, via social networks and blogs, avoiding oversaturation. They make their music using low-budget production techniques. And then, once their “indie” success wins notice in the mainstream, their label backers come out from behind the curtains.

According to industry insiders, Pittsburgh’s Wiz Khalifa has been signed to Atlantic Records for close to a month now. (You may have noticed Kush and Orange Juice, the title of his most recent mixtape, trending on Twitter and Google.) Asked about the signing, Khalifa said, “Whatever people want it to be, that’s what it is. I didn’t say yes, I didn’t say no.” Either way, he released Kush independently, planning, as he told VIBE.com, the publicity behind the project himself. “The mixtape was done last month, but I really wanted to do it up and make sure something like this [buzz] would happen,” he said. “I got some more tricks up my sleeve, too.”

Meanwhile, Atlanta’s Spree Wilson recently inked a deal with Jive records without disclosing it. “They want me to market myself,” he explains. “Mixtapes, pre-projects — all before the album, [in order] to create a buzz.” (Release dates for Spree’s upcoming projects have yet to be announced.) And Warner Bros. calls Brooklynite Theophilus London — who independently released I Want You in August April and counts Solange Knowles among his fans — a "new signee," despite the fact that it's known that he was signed late last year.

These marketing plans are meant to capitalize on, and strengthen, an artist’s independently generated buzz. Practical concerns aside, this carries the always-magical whiff of rebellion. “Rebel music always does well, because kids always want to rebel against something,“ says Archibald Bonkers. It’s the new hip-hop cred: succeeding without a record label. So why sign to a major at all? “Money. That’s the only thing,” says Khalifa. Rappers “have to start rolling the weed and sweetening the lemonade.”

Kendra Wilkinson performs an "amazing striptease" in a new sex tape.

The former Playboy model is set to become the unwilling star of an X-rated DVD - which she filmed before she was famous - and sources who have seen it say it's extremely raunchy.

One said: "When I saw it, I was shocked. I mean, I just was shocked to see a Kendra Wilkinson sex tape, but it was obvious and clear to me that it was in fact her.

"Part of the tape is an amazing striptease from her, and then at the end of the tape she blows a kiss to the camera. It is very, very sexual, and she is just a beautiful woman. It's hot, definitely hot."

Because of the clear footage and erotic content, the tape is predicted to become a huge hit.

The source added to America's OK! magazine: "This tape is sexually explicit. It's hot and she's hot. It's going to be a massive seller."

The footage was obtained by porn distributors Vivid who plan to release the DVD, entitled 'Kendra Exposed', by the end of the month.

The 24-year-old blonde star - who has a four-month-old son, Hank Baskett IV, with her American footballer husband Hank Baskett - is not giving her backing to the tape's release and has reportedly instructed Los Angeles law firm Lavely & Singer to stop the proposed DVD from coming out.

However, Vivid CEO and founder Steve Hirsch is convinced his company has the legal right to bring it out.

Behind The Beats: Pharrell

The great Skateboard P has a message for you: The N.E.R.D. tour is coming soon to a venue near you.

"Just be prepared when you come to the show," Pharrell Williams told MTV News earlier this week, sitting next to his N.E.R.D. brethren, Chad Hugo and Shay. "You'll need more than just a water bottle for our show, the festivals overseas. You'll need more than a water bottle. You'll need a towel. ... Get your stretches in. The EMTs are always on the side, because people pull muscles."

Pharrell said his group's shows are so fresh, fans will be speechless: "When they ask you what it was like and can you describe it and could you put it in a word, you'll say nothing."

The guys were able to come up with some words to describe their upcoming album, Nothing. "It's the ultimate spring, summertime record," Shay said. "It's the festival record. It's a fun record and it's geared towards the women. What woman doesn't want to put on their sundress and stroll through SoHo and have that as their theme music?"

Pharrell and Chad have been lacing their peers with some theme music lately. The Neptunes have been back in the lab with Jay-Z, and the duo also worked on Drake's Thank Me Later and Game's The R.E.D. Album. Pharrell also recently did 12 tracks with Asher Roth and has studio sessions with J. Cole.

"I just wanna do things I really like and really love," Pharrell said. "I want to do it because I really love it."

Next Wave of Flav

The Clipse: "I'm not sure what their plans are. Whatever they wanna do, we're always 100 percent onboard to help. They wanted to make a super street record for the last album, that's what we did. You know what it is about Pusha? He can make radio records if he wants. But what you have to love about the guy because he's such an artist, he wants to make 'Popular Demand' all day long. He wants to make that all day long. Listen, all Pusha wants to do is drive in a CL 600 drop, make 'Popular Demand' all day and count money. He may be mad at me for saying that, but it's really all I think about when I think about him. There's so many other aspects to his life, but the guy, that's what he likes. That's why in my opinion he has some of the most venomous 16's. His 16's are crazy, because of his affinity for spending money, fast cars and rap."

On Drake: "We have [worked with him]. It was a great record."

On the Game: "It was crazy, because you walk in the studio and it's 15 to 20 7-foot dudes. All of his friends are giants. I'm in there like Webster. Like Emmanuel Lewis, looking up at everybody like, 'Yeah, OK, cool.' It was kinda otherworldly. Except me and my engineer, we're the only two regular humans. These guys are like giants. But the most creative sessions ever."

On Rick Ross: "Puff just said something to me last night [about Ross' album]. You can only imagine where that's going. Great places."

On Fat Joe: "Fat Joe? Any time. Joey Crack has been in the game for a long time, since 'Flow Joe.' He's had a run. You cannot count him out. Every time you're prepared to, he'll go and find one. He knows how to make a record."

On Jay-Z: "The guy is 40 and had a #1 record, and he sold more records than anybody in hip-hop at the time his album came out. And it's still selling. The one thing we're allowed to say [about our new collaboration] is he and I said that we're sworn to secrecy."

B.o.B is certainly on a roll right now, with the #1 album in the country this week and its lead single "Nothin' on You" also a #1 hit. But the upstart hip-hop star, powered by his syrupy smash, almost didn't get his hands on the Bruno Mars-assisted "Nothin' on You."

The record, produced by the Smeezingtons (Bruno Mars and songwriting partner Phillip Lawrence), was originally slated for Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B's Atlantic Records labelmate. According to producer Jim Jonsin, who signed B.o.B to his Rebel Rock imprint, he was responsible for redirecting the record to his artist.

"I was actually working on a session in Chung King [Studios], and [Atlantic Records chairman] Craig Kallman called me during that session with that particular track, to work on it for Lupe Fiasco," Jonsin told MTV News. "I told Craig, 'I like the song a lot. It's a smash and could be somebody's single. But it's not Lupe's record. I need this record for B.o.B. Please give this record to B.o.B.' I guess they went through whoever they went through, convinced whoever they needed to, and it got to B.o.B."

As the song was climbing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, B.o.B said he was as surprised as anyone by the song's success.

"We really didn't expect it to have the dramatic impact it had, nor how fast it happened," B.o.B told MTV News last month. "Me and my managers, B. Rich and TJ, we still look at each other speechless. We always aim to be successful. But when the byproduct exceeds your expectations — when usually you barely make the basket with what you want — the gratitude is through the roof. It's literally a dream come true."

The rewards have been a long time coming for the Atlanta rapper. He's been signed as an artist for a few years but realized only minimal success with a few scattered mixtape tracks. His potential, however, was always recognized, landing him on the 2009 cover of hip-hop magazine XXL's Freshmen 10 issue (putting him in the company of Wale and Asher Roth, among other rising MCs).

"I will tell you this about the journey as an artist to get to the point where you actually have a release date," he explained earlier this year. "The biggest lesson I learned is patience. Once you get here, it's like, 'OK, now you have to keep going. You never get to an end.' So you have to be patient and pace yourself. Take time. It's like building a house. You gotta take time, build a foundation, get the walls right, get the electricity right, get the plumbing right and make sure when you turn the light on that the door don't open up."

A blizzard in the spring? You already know — the Snowman is back in town.

Young Jeezy's Trap or Die 2: By Any Means Necessary is spreading all over. The tape came out Tuesday, and the streets are definitely talking.

Jeezy said his mission, like on the original, is to touch souls and tell his story.

"The biggest difference between this and the classic Trap or Die, there's a lot of people here during Trap or Die 1," Jeezy said. "Unfortunately, a lot of them are dead or in jail. It's was a whole different time. Everybody was rich. It ain't like that no more. I felt I had to feed the streets. Everybody is on their way back up, trying to get their money right. Get their situation right. We just come out the recession. I wanted to give them something to ride to. You gonna have your music for the clubs, but I wanted to give them something that touches them [in their heart]."

The cover of the mixtape features Jeezy in glasses, with his finger pointed to his temple, similar to Malcolm X.

"I know a lot of cats are trippin' off the cover," Young said. "I tell 'em like this: You had Martin Luther King, you had Malcolm X. One thing I respected about Malcolm X is that he believed in what he believed in. He died believing in it. That's how I am. I would never compare myself to the great Malcolm, but I will die believing in what I believe in."

By Any Means Necessary is hosted by Don Cannon, who also produced on the tape.

"The original idea of Trap or Die 2 was something DJ Drama was supposed to do," Cannon explained. "As days went by, [Jeezy] felt it was something that had to be done fast, because we was on a campaign. I didn't have anything to do with the decision of the tape being with a DJ or without a DJ. But I really decided I would be there for [Young] if he wanted to put Trap or Die 2 out."

Papoose has to sit back and think for a couple of minutes when asked how many mixtapes he's released in the past five years. After some quick mental math, the Brooklyn-born MC comes up with the figure (same number as Michael Jordan's jersey): 23. "I actually slowed down for a little bit, and cats still ain't catch up."

Pap's 23rd tape, Papoose Season, came out last week.

"[The title] came from a conversation with me and [DJ] Kay Slay," Pap explained. "I dropped a freestyle out there. The haters came, the support came, just all the regular stuff that happens when it's Papoose season. Everyone went in a frenzy over that. Slay was like, 'Ah, man, it's Papoose season again.' I was like, 'Damn, I gotta run with that.' So I ran with that. I'm not stopping. My consistency is going to continue."

When Pap reflected on his underground legacy, he came to one conclusion: He's the uno.

"The best," Pap said unapologetically. "I think I'm the best to ever do it. I take it serious. R.I.P. to Justo [late founder of the annual Mixtape Awards]. I feel that Justo left me with the mixtape crown, so I gotta hold that down. But a mixtape is not what it used to be. It means way more to the game now. You got mixtapes out there that's more relevant than albums. That's why I think I was so successful. I always took it more serious than the average cat would.

"I was watching [a Mixtape Dailyinterview with Drake] y'all did. What Drake was saying, I been trying to tell cats that for years," the MC said, referring to Drake's assertion last month that "a mixtape has become an album." "They thinking I'm crazy. But meanwhile, these mixtapes are taking me on tour. I just came back from Russia. [The mixtapes,] they feeding me. I'm paying my bills. This is how I'm getting money. I have no problem with releasing music."

But what about the long-awaited debut album? Twenty-three tapes delivered, and Pap's fans are still waiting for his Nacirema Dream. His followers were patient through a lengthy bidding war in 2006; they even understood when Pap signed with and quickly left Jive Records after he and the label couldn't see eye to eye. And that was almost three years ago.

Pap said he's hoping to put his debut out this year.

"If everything goes the way it's going now, they definitely going to get the album," he promised. "If it doesn't ... I'm moving forward. I'm strategizing my business where I can present the album the way I want to present it. But I got an incredible album. I wanna look back on this interview when the album does come out. I want to show and prove, because I'm touching on topics that need to be touched. I'm watching the game. I'm looking at what I got in the vault, and I'm like, 'Nobody has surpassed it. This material was ahead of its time.' I'm just so confident in what my album is gonna do. Just based on my fanbase and the money I make and the feedback I get, I know I'm gonna be successful enough to keep it moving and drop the next album."

It's been a minute since we've heard anything from Katt Williams. The troubled comedian has been staying out of trouble with the law recently.

Uncle Sam is here to rain on his parade though. The IRS filed a $284,419 lien against Williams on March 15 with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds

His business manager, Lance Bogart told the Detroit News that Katt "will pay all debts owed to the IRS".

Katt retired from stand-up comedy last year. He might want to reconsider that and get some money rolling in ASAP.

Smouldering in a series of barely-there ensembles, Jennifer oozes confidence, and reveals the secret to happiness is being comfortable with yourself.

I was always very comfortable with who I was,' she told us. 'I've never looked at myself in a negative way.'

Just like anybody, I try to watch what I eat. There's no big science to it, which is what sucks,' she reveals.

And revealing her sense of humour, the Latin diva laughs when asked if rumours her famous derriere has been insured for millions are true.

'No! Though I thought that story was funny. In fact, we traced that story, and that was a rumour that started in London,' she says.

And despite her reputation for being a diva, it's clear that couldn't be further from the truth.

Jen seems to have finally found contentment with husband Marc and baby twins Max and Emme, who even joined her on the shoot.

Kim Kardashian has learned the hard way not to mess with a tween overcome with Bieber fever.

Shortly after meeting the sultry reality star at Saturday's White House Correspondents' dinner in Washington, D.C., pop sensation Justin Bieber posted a photo of himself with Kardashian on Twitter.

"Look its my girlfriend," Bieber jokingly wrote.

However, many of the pop star's two million Twitter followers didn't take the joke too kindly and began bombarded Kardashian with an overwhelming amount of heartbroken messages.

"I'm getting death threats from your fans!" Kardashian, 29, wrote to the singer Tuesday night. "This is unBeliebable!!!"

The 16-year-old chart topper took matters into his own hands Wednesday by assuring his many admirers that he is still on the market.

"ladies calm down," he wrote, adding that Kardashian was only "a friend."

"a very sexy friend but a friend," he added. "no need 4 threats. Let's all be friends and hang out often."

By now, Bieber should be used to his legion of crazed fans.

The day after his Australian show was canceled last month after unruly fans caused minor injuries to each other, the singer landed in New Zealand to an equally feverish crowd.

Instead of welcoming the baby-faced singer with open arms, his 500 screaming fans grabbed the hat off his head and sent his mother, Pattie Mallette, sprawling.

"I want to be able to sign and take pics and meet my fans, but if you are all pushing, security won't let me," he tweeted. "Let's keep it safe and have fun."
