Video After The Jump

(TMZ) -- 21 Savage is a prisoner of America's immigration system -- he's facing deportation, he can't leave the country, his ability to make a living is severely impaired and he doesn't even have a court date.

As TMZ reported ... Savage was arrested in Atlanta back in February and placed in ICE custody. Turns out he entered the U.S. legally from the UK back in 2005, but his visa expired and he's been here illegally for years.

The rapper wasn't even able to get a work permit for 8 months, which meant he couldn't work domestically. He finally got one last month, so at least now he can work in the U.S. ... but traveling out of the country is out of the question until he gets things cleared up with immigration.

As you know, selling records doesn't cut it anymore, so artists make their money by doing concerts, and every country out of the U.S. is off-limits to him.

Here's the underlying problem ... we're told immigration courts in the ATL are ridiculously overcrowded with hundreds of backlogged cases. There are people who have gotten court dates for 2022. Savage hasn't even gotten a court date, so it could take years to resolve his case.

Little did we know the slow-turning wheels of American bureaucracy have been screwing him over behind the scenes. Kinda opens your eyes, huh?

(Billboard) -- Cardi B leads all nominees at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.

The "I Like It" rapper is nominated 21 times in 18 categories, including Top Artist, Top Female Artist and Top 100 Artist -- just missing the record for most nominations set by Drake and The Chainsmokers, who each had 22 in 2017. Cardi will compete against herself in three categories -- top Hot 100 song, top selling song, and top collaboration.

Following Cardi B, Drake and Post Malone each have 17 nominations. Travis Scott is up for 12 awards, and XXXTentacion is up for 10.

Among the other nominees are Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper -- who are up for the chart achievement award, top soundtrack for A Star Is Born, and top selling song for "Shallow." Gaga is up separately for top song sales artist.

For this year's ceremony, there are two fan-voted categories -- top social artist, and chart achievement.

Kelly Clarkson hosts the 2019 Billboard Music Awards from the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 1. The show will air live at 8PM ET on NBC.

Report via Fox5Atlanta -- Rapper 21 Savage has been released from detention on bond pending a deportation hearing, his lawyers said.

The rapper's lawyers, Alex Spiro, Charles H. Kuck and Dina LaPolt, said he "won his freedom."

"21 Savage asked us to send a special message to his fans and supporters—he says that while he wasn’t present at the Grammy Awards, he was there in spirit and is grateful for the support from around the world and is more than ever, ready to be with his loved ones and continue making music that brings people together," 21 Savage's lawyers aid in a statement.

The lawyers said that 21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yea Bin Abraham-Joseph, would not forget the ordeal or the other people he was locked up with who "remain unjustly incarcerated accross the country."

Abraham-Joseph was arrested Super Bowl Sunday for violating immigration law. ICE says Abraham-Joseph is unlawfully present in the U.S. and also a convicted felon.

According to ICE, the rapper entered the U.S. legally in July 2005 but failed to depart and became unlawfully present when his Visa expired in 2006.

His release comes hours after a group of 10 civil rights organizations is delivered a petition with more than 445,000 signatures demanding the release of rapper 21 Savage by ICE on Tuesday.

The organizations, which include Color of Change, Black Lives Matter Global Network, and AUC Shut It Down say that the rapper is still "unjustly detained by the Trump Administration’s Immigrations and Customs Enforcement as they continue to target Black immigrants."

Joseph-Abraham's legal team compared the United Kingdom national to millions of so-called DREAMers, brought to this country as children whose immigration status expired through no fault of their own.

ATLANTA (AP) — Grammy-nominated rapper 21 Savage was taken into federal immigration custody early Sunday, authorities said.

The artist, whose given name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested in a targeted operation in the Atlanta area involving local and federal law enforcement officers, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox said in an emailed statement. Abraham-Joseph is a British citizen who overstayed his visa and is also has a felony conviction, Cox said.

“We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings,” lawyer Dina LaPolt said without elaborating.

Abraham-Joseph is a role model to young people in the U.S., especially in Atlanta, LaPolt said.

Abraham-Joseph is nominated for two awards at next week’s Grammys, including record of the year for “Rockstar” alongside Post Malone. His second solo album “I Am I Was,” released in December, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Abraham-Joseph entered the U.S. legally in July 2005, but has been present in the country illegally since his visa expired in July 2006, Cox said. He was convicted on felony drug charges in October 2014 in Fulton County, Cox said.

He has been placed in deportation proceedings in federal immigration court, Cox said.

LeBron James apologized in December for posting one of Abraham-Joseph’s lyrics that referenced “Jewish money.” The basketball star apologized on ESPN, saying he got caught up in the music and thought the lyric was a “compliment.”

The rapper later tweeted his own apology for the lyric from the song “ASMR,” which says, “We been getting that Jewish money, Everything is Kosher.”
