NEW YORK (AP) — Deontay Wilder was out on his feet. Forget defending his WBC heavyweight title, Wilder was lucky to find his corner when the seventh round concluded.
About 10 minutes later, he was strutting around the Barclays Center ring, his belt secure, but his reputation as being untouchable severely tarnished.
Wilder survived a pummeling from Luis Ortiz, then knocked out the challenger in the 10th round Saturday night to retain his crown. Befitting the undefeated champion from Alabama, it was a wild affair for the final few rounds after a dull series of pawing and gesturing by Wilder gave Ortiz a solid lead.
“A true champion always finds a way to come back and that’s what I did tonight,” Wilder said. “Luis Ortiz is definitely a crafty guy. He put up a great fight. We knew we had to wear him down. I showed everyone I can take a punch.”
Well, yeah — Wilder certainly took his share of them.
Even after Wilder knocked down Ortiz in the fifth round, the bout remained in the Cuban’s favor.
Then, in the seventh, Wilder was dazed and confused by Ortiz’s assault. Though he never hit the canvas, he stumbled to his corner when that round ended. The end seemed near.
“I almost had him and I think I would’ve if there were a few more seconds in the round,” Ortiz said. “Wilder was definitely saved by the bell. I thought I had him out on his feet. But you have to give him credit, he weathered the storm.”
Instead of folding, Wilder closed the ninth with two hard rights, and then a series of vicious combinations in the 10th started Ortiz’s downfall.
It was over with 55 seconds to go in the 10th after Ortiz went down for the second time in the round from a right uppercut and referee David Fields stopped it.
“I just had to get my range back and my fundamentals back,” Wilder said. “And I was able to do that. I showed I was a true champion tonight.”
Wilder, 32, is 40-0 with 39 knockouts. This easily was his toughest bout. Somehow, he was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards.
The Associated Press had it 86-83 for Ortiz heading into the 10th.
Ortiz, 38, is 28-1. He couldn’t have come much closer to becoming the first Cuban heavyweight belt holder after finally getting his match with Wilder. Their initially scheduled bout was in November, but Ortiz twice tested positive for a banned substance, a diuretic.
He was ready Saturday, but not quite resourceful enough.
“In this sport, any punch can end a fight,” Ortiz said. “In the ring anything can happen.”
Wilder basically threw away the early rounds with a lack of aggression and much clowning. The left-handed Ortiz was all business.
In the fifth, with boos raining down from the crowd of 14,069 at Barclays Center, Wilder finally landed a solid punch. That invigorated him and two rights to the chin sent down Ortiz.
Wilder couldn’t finish him, and was nearly finished himself two rounds later. Ortiz was so dominant in those three minutes that Wilder looked bewildered at his predicament.
The champ hung on in the eighth, then somehow found the fortitude and punching power to turn it around in the final two rounds.
“Luis Ortiz was one of those fighters that everyone ducked, even champions ducked him,” Wilder said. “I wondered why it took so long for him to get a title shot and now we know.”
What boxing doesn’t know is how this performance will affect the division. Wilder’s sights have been set on Anthony Joshua, who defends his WBA and IBF crowns at the end of the month against WBO champ Joseph Parker.
If nothing else, Wilder’s ring reputation took a hit, although his toughness and ability to take a punch can’t be questioned.
“I’m ready right now,” Wilder said. “I always said that I want to unify. I’m ready whenever those guys are. I am the baddest man on the planet and I proved that tonight. This solidified my position at the top of the food chain tonight.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Floyd Mayweather Jr. put on a show in the last fight of his spectacular career.
Conor McGregor didn’t do so badly, either.
Mayweather figured out a 50th opponent Saturday night, letting McGregor have the early rounds before stalking him late and leaving the mixed martial artist defenseless and exhausted on the ropes in the 10th round.

It was a smashing end to a career that earned Mayweather more money than any fighter before him — including an estimated $200 million for his last bout.
“I think we gave the fans what they wanted to see,” Mayweather said. “I owed them for the (Manny) Pacquiao fight.”
Mayweather battered McGregor around the ring in the later rounds, finally stopping him at 1:05 of the 10th with a flurry of punches that forced referee Robert Byrd to stop the fight.
Before a pro-McGregor crowd that roared every time the UFC fighter landed a punch, Mayweather methodically broke him down after a slow start to score his first real stoppage in nearly a decade. He did it in what he said would be his final fight, against a man who had never been in a professional boxing match before.
McGregor boxed surprisingly well but after landing some shots in the early rounds, his punches seemed to lose their steam. Mayweather then went on the pursuit. McGregor backpedaled most of the way, stopping only to throw an occasional flurry as Mayweather wore him down.
“I turned him into a Mexican tonight,” McGregor said. “He fought like a Mexican.”
Though Byrd cautioned McGregor for hitting behind the head on two different occasions, there were no real fouls in the fight and McGregor never tried to revert to any MMA tactics.
McGregor had vowed to knock Mayweather out within two rounds, and he won the early rounds with movement and punches to the head. But the tide of the fight turned in the fourth round as Mayweather seemed to figure out what he had to do and began aggressively stalking McGregor.
Mayweather was credited with landing more than half his punches, as he solved McGregor’s defense after a few rounds. Ringside stats showed him landing 170 of 320 punches to 111 of 430 for McGregor.
In a fight so intriguing that it cost $10,000 for ringside seats, McGregor turned in a respectable performance for someone in his first fight. He switched from southpaw to conventional at times and used his jab well, but Mayweather’s experience and his ring savvy paid off as he executed his game plan to perfection.
“Our game plan was to take our time, go to him and take him out in the end,” Mayweather said. “I guaranteed everybody this fight wouldn’t go the distance.
McGregor was trailing badly on all three ringside scorecards through the ninth round, with scores of 89-81, 89-81 and 87-83. The Associated Press had it 87-84.
Mayweather was widely criticized for not going after Pacquiao in their megafight, and he didn’t make the same mistake this time. In a fight that could make him $200 million, he seemed to stagger McGregor with a series of punches in the ninth round, landing at will as McGregor desperately tried to clinch.
The end was near as the two fighters came out for the 10th round and Mayweather went right after McGregor again. He landed a punch that set McGregor reeling across the ring, then landed a combination that had McGregor defenseless as Byrd moved in to stop the bout. McGregor didn’t complain when the fight was stopped and went over and hugged Mayweather.
“I was a little fatigued,” he said. “He was composed in there, that’s what 50 pro fights can give you.”
He seemed almost happy in the ring afterward, secure that he had given a good performance even in losing.
“I thought it was close though and I thought it was a bit of an early stoppage. I was just a little fatigued.”
McGregor’s challenge of Mayweather was fueled by social media and turned into a spectacle as the two fighters promoted the bout. It figured to make him $100 million or so, and gave McGregor a name and brand outside of the UFC.
He also got some respect from a fighter who has been in the ring his entire life.
“He’s a lot better than I thought he’d be,” Mayweather said. “He’s a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight.”
After all the talk and hype, the fight unfolded like most in boxing figured it would. Mayweather, a 5-1 favorite, took a few rounds to establish his dominance but once he did it was a one-sided fight.
Mayweather ran his record to 50-0, surpassing Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record and giving himself a great parting gift. He repeated afterward that he was not going to fight again.
“This is my last fight for sure. 50-0 sounds good, I’m looking forward to going into the Hall of Fame,” Mayweather said. “I picked the best dance partner to do it with.
Irish fans arrived by the thousands in the days before the fight, filling the arena for the weigh-in and boisterously cheering for their man. They even went off in the middle of the night and spray painted an Irish flag and “49-1” on a billboard on Interstate 15 promoting Mayweather’s businesses.
The capacity crowd of 14,623 cheered McGregor on, but they quieted as the fight progressed and Mayweather showed his dominance.

Drake has become one of the biggest superstars in the world, but he's never forgotten where it all began. Lil Wayne invited him to the city in 2008 and eventually signed the Canadian to Young Money Records.
The rapper kicked of his Houston Appreciation Weekend on Thursday, June 12, by hosting 50 children from the Astros’ Urban Youth Academy at Minute Maid Park on Thursday night, June 12.
“It’s a really important weekend to me,” he said. “Houston is really where I birthed my entire career. This is where I sold out my first show. This is where I met Lil Wayne. This is where it all started for me.” I have it tattooed on my skin and in my heart. That was a line I was working on, on the way here. I just want to let you to know that it means a lot for me to be here today.”
The song "November 18" off of Drizzy's 2009 mixtape So Far Gone is about H-Town.
"I was really nervous, because I made a song for a city that I wasn't from, a brand of music that didn't necessarily belong to me, because I'm from Canada," he said. "And I got accepted. They listened to it, they loved it, they made it one of their anthems here."
"They're very proud of the culture here," he added. "You can play the biggest rap record in the world, but nothing's going to get more of a reaction than something that's classic Houston music, and I love that. It shows a loyalty to me."
The rapper posed for photos with Astros players and fans. Tonight he will perform before a packed crowd at Warehouse Live. Lil Wayne will be in attendance at the after party. On Saturday Drake will attend a premiere for the movie Think Like a Man Too and a poll party. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday with a basketball tournament.
Friday June 13th I'm performing at Warehouse Live for HAW. Going back to where it all began.

50 Cent has more than a few big plans for his career over the next several years, and one huge philanthropic effort.
50 previously announced plans to feed over a billion Africans over the next five years the sale of his new Street King shot.
"It’s our mission with Street King to really change children’s lives around the world," 50 said at the time.
Today the G-Unit boss talked more in depth about his plans with XXL. And explained that money isn't everything.
I’ve been occupied with my newest idea,” he explains. “Initially I thought money was gonna make me happy, because a lot of the issues that were right in front of me were financial issues growing up. I earned finances [when I got older] to the point where I’m pretty comfortable. I don’t see things I can’t buy. Some things I would have to work for. You look at huge boats, you can go ahead and buy them, I can buy them if I wanted to. … It feels good now because I’m shifting into a different pocket because … My new goal is to feed a billion people in Africa over the next five years.”
Fif also has huge plans to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the best album of the last decade. According to XXL, 50 is considering performing 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin,' live in it's entirety on February 6, 2013.
If it goes down it will be a huge event. Keep it locked her for more information.
