With their 16-6 victory over the St Louis Rams yesterday, the Seattle Seahawks earned a wild card spot in the NFC playoffs, but should they have?
Seattle becomes the first team in NFL history to win a division with a sub .500 record at 7-9. Their division, the NFC West is the worst football.
The Arizona Cardinals (5-11), San Francisco 49ers (6-10), St Louis Rams (7-9) and Seattle combined for just five more wins than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-6) and New York Giants (10-6).
But while the Giants and Buccaneers didn’t make the playoffs and prepare for a long off season, Seattle gets rewarded for being mediocre.
I understand rules are rules and the winners of each of the eight NFL divisions are automatically rewarded a playoff spot. This has to be embarrassing to the league though. Outside the state of Washington I don’t know of anyone that thinks this is fair.
This rule stinks, I don’t think teams should be allowed into the playoffs if they don’t at least finish with an 8-8 record. Thoughts?
