A Korean veteran shooter told reporters this week that having an Iranian athlete accused of being a terrorist compete at the Tokyo Games is “absurd & ridiculous,” adding pressure on the International Olympic Committee to investigate the allegations.
International critics have accused Javad Foroughi, who won gold in the 10-meter pistol on Saturday, of being a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a powerful paramilitary organization considered by the United States as a terrorist group. The IOC has challenged critics to show proof of his alleged ties to the IRGC, but it’s still unclear if any such evidence would surface.
South Korea’s Jin Jong-oh, a six-time gold medalist shooter who failed to qualify for the Olympics this year, was outraged by Foroughi’s participation in the event.
“How can a terrorist win first place? That’s the most absurd & ridiculous thing,” he said.
The unproven allegations began spreading shortly after Foroughi won the first and only medal so far for his country in Tokyo.
The activist group “United For Navid,” which has long campaigned for Iran to be excluded from the Olympics and warned about the possible presence of military members at the event, described the 41-year-old shooter as a current & longtime member of the IRGC. The group — named after wrestler Navid Afkari, who was killed by the Iranian government last year — said awarding Foroughi a medal was “not only a catastrophe for Iranian sports but also for the international community, and especially the reputation of International Olympic Committee.”
“Awarding an Olympic Gold Medal to a member of a terrorist organization is an insult to other athletes & a black mark on the IOC. ‘United for Navid’ calls for an immediate investigation by the IOC, & until an investigation is completed the suspension of any medal award,” the group said.
The Trump administration designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2019, saying the Iranian government uses the group as a tool for plotting terrorist attacks, including some that have killed U.S. citizens, as well as taking hostages & fueling violence across the Middle East.
A popular TikTok star died from his injuries days after a man opened fire inside a Southern California movie theater during a screening of "The Forever Purge."
Anthony Barajas, 19, was the second victim killed in Monday's shooting. Corona police previously identified the first victim as Rylee Goodrich, 18.
Authorities said Barajas & Goodrich were at the Regal Edwards Theatre in Corona. Workers cleaning up the theater after the movie ended discovered two people had been shot in the head.
Goodrich was pronounced dead & Barajas was taken to the hospital and placed on life support. Corona police said Barajas died early Saturday morning.
Joseph Jimenez, 20, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He was booked earlier this week on suspicion of murder, attempted murder & robbery but prosecutors on Friday filed a special circumstance murder charge.
Hestrin said the special circumstance charge makes Jimenez eligible for the death penalty if prosecutors choose to seek that punishment at trial.
A judge on Friday ordered Jimenez to be held without bail. His arraignment was delayed until Thursday at the request of the defense. Prosecutors said the shooting appears to be "random & unprovoked."
Barajas was known online as "itsanthonymichael" & has nearly a million followers on TikTok and more than 50,000 on Instagram.

DETROIT (FOX 2) - Two women awaiting a flight to Detroit fought at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport In Atlanta before two other passengers stepped in to break it up.
The fight was caught on video. It appears the two women who were waiting for their Spirit Airlines flight are mother and daughter.
Officials with the airport said police were not called. Spirit Airlines did not respond to a request for comment.
It's not the first time Spirit passengers have brawled at airports or on flights.
Last week, two people headed to Atlanta from Las Vegas fought during their flight, while earlier this year, two passengers duked it out after landing at Detroit Metro Airport.
Another incident involved would-be travelers attacking Spirit employees over a luggage issue.
A national survey found that there has been an uptick in unruly passengers recently.
"Eighty-five percent of the flight attendants who took this survey, and that’s over 5,000 of them, said that they have dealt with unruly passengers this year," said Andrew Feldman, the spokesperson for the Association Of Flight Attendants-CWA. "The vitriol, the verbal, and physical abuse that we’re seeing from a small number of passengers on our aircrafts and in our airports is out of control."

A Forney woman has been accused of assaulting a public servant during an incident the woman’s relatives have called a case of police brutality.
Antanique Ray, 41, was arrested Tuesday after a Kaufman County sheriff’s deputy restrained her daughter, 18-year-old Nekia Trigg, as the teenager walked through a Forney neighborhood.
Part of the incident was captured on cellphone video, and the Sheriff’s Office said it is under investigation.
Officials said deputies were called to Rambling Way in the Deerfield Heights development, where someone had reported a female was jumping in and out of traffic.
The seven-minute video that has been shared widely on social media begins when a deputy already has pinned Trigg to the ground in the front yard of a home.
Ray approaches them and asks why the deputy needs to hold Trigg down. The deputy, whose name badge says “Martin,” tells her to back up and begins yelling, “Do not touch me! Back up! Back up!” as Trigg screams beneath him. It is not clear that Ray touches him.
Ray tells the deputy that he doesn’t have to restrain Trigg, but he says that she was trying to jump in front of cars.
As another deputy walks up with handcuffs, Ray squeezes her daughter’s hand and asks her to stay calm. Someone on the video expresses concern for Trigg’s welfare, noting that it looks as if she’s foaming at the mouth as she says she can’t breathe.
The deputies roll Trigg over and cuff her hands behind her back, then raise her to her feet and begin walking her into the street. Ray walks with them, and the deputies tell her to let go of her daughter.
In the span of a few seconds, Martin appears to reach over to separate the two women, Ray takes several steps back and then Martin tackles her onto the street.
A third deputy attempts to keep onlookers out of the street and then helps the other deputies restrain both women. A fourth law-enforcement official points a stun gun at the person recording the video; it’s not clear what agency he is with.
One of the deputies tells Ray that she’s being arrested for interference, and they handcuff her.
“All I did was ask you to listen to us,” she says. “I didn’t touch you. I touched my daughter when she said ... [the handcuffs] were too tight.”
