RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Bank robbers armed with explosives and high-powered rifles plunged a city in Sao Paulo state’s interior into terror early Monday, taking civilians hostage & even putting some on their cars while making their escape.
Video shared on social media showed a booming shootout & men dressed in black marching hostages down a street in Araçatuba, 323 miles from Sao Paulo & home to almost 200,000 people.
After ransacking at least two bank branches, the criminals drove away with hostages atop their cars’ roofs and hoods, clinging on to keep from sliding off. Another hostage stood with his torso protruding from an SUV’s sunroof and his hands held in the air.
At least three people were killed in the clash, two of whom were civilians. One was a local businessman who went to the location to film the attack & the other a delivery boy. Local media reported the third person killed was a criminal.
Large-scale bank heists have become more frequent in recent years, with hostages used as human shields. Last July, a group of criminals stormed Botucatu, &, over two days in December, two cities on opposite sides of the country.
The coordinated attack on Monday involved dozens of criminals & at least 10 cars. They reportedly used a drone to monitor the movements of police who were struggling to respond to the assault. The criminals had burned vehicles in strategic locations to impede access.
Araçatuba’s mayor, Dilador Borges, said authorities believe undetonated explosives remain in some areas of the city center & called on residents to remain in their homes.
Local media reported that branches belonging to state banks Caixa Federal & Banco do Brasil were the ones targeted. In a response to a request for comment, Caixa said it only provides information about crimes to police. Banco do Brasil said it is collaborating with authorities & that it doesn’t disclose the amount of money stolen in robberies.

An apparent relative posted a statement on Instagram about Mercedes' passing. "Thank you for all the prayers and calls in regards to Mercedes. Her parents are asking that you respect the family," so read the statement shared by a user @htownciara. "We know everyone is concerned. We will update everyone when all the information is confirmed. Thank you."
Tory Lanez was one of Mercedes' acquaintances who have sent their condolences. "Rest in peace queen," the Canadian rapper posted on his Instagram Story along with a picture of the late model.
Others flooded the comment section of Mercedes' post on the social media platform with their messages expressing their sadness. "Mercedez I'm so sorry you did not deserve this at all. You had your whole life ahead of you," a friend wrote. "I remember all our times we had and you have always been the sweetest woman in the world. God bless you and your family. CHICAGO (AP) — A Black man who was left paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot by a white police officer in Wisconsin expects to be walking soon, an accomplishment he says is tempered by fears of it happening again.
Jacob Blake Jr. was shot seven times by a Kenosha police officer in August 2020, three months after George Floyd was killed by police in Minnesota. Blake’s shooting set off days of violent protests in the city of about 100,000 people located midway between Chicago & Milwaukee.
Blake tells CNN he was able to take a few steps during his son’s birthday celebration this past week, which he compared to sliding his legs through a woodchipper. Although he was “so geeked” by the moment that followed months of physical rehabilitation, he is not claiming victory.
“Yeah, I’m here, & yeah I’m about to be walking, but I really don’t feel like I have survived because it could happen to me again,” Blake said. “I have not survived until something has changed.”
Blake said he continues to relive not only his own shooting, but other gun violence in the Black community. Last month, during Fourth of July fireworks when Blake was in Chicago with family, he called 911 over what he later realized was an anxiety attack.
“I’m hearing these booms (fireworks) & it’s not scaring me because I got shot, it’s scaring me because all of those people have gotten shot so every time a boom went off, I’m kind of imagining people dying,” Blake said.
Blake was shot by Kenosha police Officer Rusten Sheskey after he & two other Kenosha officers tried to arrest Blake on an outstanding warrant. A pocketknife fell from Blake’s pants during a scuffle. He said he picked it up before heading to a vehicle to drive away with two of his children in the back seat. He said he was prepared to surrender once he put the knife in the vehicle. Sheskey, who was not charged, told investigators that he feared for his own safety.
The shooting touched off chaotic protests in the Kenosha area, during which time an Illinois man allegedly shot & killed two demonstrators & wounded another. Kyle Rittenhouse faces two charges of felony murder and one charge of attempted felony murder in the attack that left Blake “furious” & “angry.”
“For the reasons they said they shot me, they had every reason to shoot him, but they didn’t,” Blake said. “Honestly if his skin color was different, and I’m not prejudiced or a racist, he probably would have been labeled a terrorist.”

NEW YORK (AP) — A 24-year-old man was fatally shot by police in the Bronx early Sunday and his father was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
The incident occurred at about 4:15 a.m. approximately a block away from the 46th Precinct station house. NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said two off-duty officers had finished their shift and were leaving the building when they saw the 24-year-old and his 45-year-old father in a dispute with a group of people.
The younger man shot at the group and then turned and fired at the officers, according to Holmes. They returned fire, striking him in the torso. The man’s 45-year-old father then picked up the gun and fired at police before he was subdued, Holmes said.
Neither man was identified. The son was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, and his father was being detained. It wasn’t immediately known what sparked the dispute between the two men and the group, or whether anyone in the group was injured.
Neither officer suffered injuries, Holmes said. The shooting remained under investigation.

A Florida man was arrested on Thursday after attempting to kill his grandmother, according to police.
In an official statement, the Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Byron Quintez Dexter had been taken into custody for shooting his grandmother, Annie Parish, in the neck with a .22 caliber handgun. Speaking to investigators later, the 21-year-old said various odd things about his actions, including "I killed a black queen so I won the game" and "I killed the devil."
"About a quarter to 7, he comes out of his bedroom with a semi-automatic handgun, points it at his 16-year-old sister, and said 'what's going on?" Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement to the press.
In response, the sister gathered up several younger children in their Polk County home and moved away. Dexter then turned and opened fire on Parish, who had been sitting at a table nearby, and immediately fled.
"His mother was in the room, heard the commotion," Judd continued. "She got into the room just in time to see Byron fleeing out of the home, gun in hand."
Parish was flown via helicopter to Tampa General Hospital. She survived the shooting but was reported to be in critical condition. A bullet had become lodged in her spine, but she had not been paralyzed, according to Judd.
Dexter was later found by police riding his bike on Highway 37 and arrested. The handgun was still in his possession when he was taken into custody. He now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed firearm, and shooting into/in an occupied dwelling.
Judd explained that Dexter did not have any criminal history before this incident, but he did have a history of mental health problems. His family had previously attempted to get him admitted to a mental hospital for treatment, but Dexter refused.
Polk County is located in central Florida just east of Hillsborough County, which is home to Tampa, one of the biggest cities in the state.

LYONS, Ill. (WGN9) — Two brothers have been taken into custody after containers with remains have been found beneath a Lyons home after the brothers admitted to burying their mother and sister.
The men have not been formally charged or identified yet and are being taken into custody as the investigation continues.
A well-being check was initiated at a home Thursday in the 3900 block of South Center Avenue. When officers arrived, they were met by two brothers, in their late 40s and early 50s, living there. According to police, the residence was a “hoarder home” with items filled from the floor to the ceiling.
Police said there were feces all over, bottles filled with urine and no running water or working toilets. The water department said the home didn’t have running water for a year. Because of the amount of stuff in the house, it was impossible to enter through the front or back door. The brothers were apparently entering and exiting through a side window.
While speaking with the brothers, police learned that their mother died in 2019 and that her death “may have been an accident that involved the sister, who also died this past year.”
Lyons police said the brothers told them they buried the bodies in the backyard due to fears of COVID-19 and because they didn’t have money to pay for the funeral costs. The brothers also said they buried several animals in the yard.
Burying a body is not illegal in Illinois, but it is illegal to conceal a death or homicide. The brothers have not been charged because police still do not know if the bodies are actually buried in the yard.
The two men were placed in custody for their safety Thursday, according to police. They arrived at the house Friday morning in hospital gowns and spoke to reporters in a bizarre and sometimes incoherent interview.
Police Chief Thomas Herion said there is no record of the mother and sister’s death. Police checked with the state and Cook County and found no records.
Neighbors in the area said they had not seen the brothers for several days.
One neighbor said she didn’t even know there were two people living there — she thought it was just one. She said the brother she knew of never bothered anyone. However, she said she was not surprised to hear the bodies were buried in the backyard.
“It doesn’t surprise me, you know they don’t have any money,” a neighbor said.

Former child star Matthew Mindler has been found dead after being reported missing from his college. He was 19.
On Saturday, Aug. 28, Millersville University in Pennsylvania announced the death of the former actor, who starred in the 2011 film Our Idiot Brother and also appeared on a 2009 episode of the soap opera As the World Turns.
"Dear Campus Community, It is with a grieving heart that I let you know of the death of 19-year-old Matthew Mindler from Hellertown, Pennsylvania, a first-year student at Millersville University," University President Daniel A. Wubah wrote in a letter posted on social media. "Our thoughts of comfort and peace are with his friends and family during this difficult time."
The letter continued, "A search has been underway for Matthew since Thursday, after he was reported missing. Millersville University Police and law enforcement agencies from the area had been searching for him since that time. Matthew was found deceased this morning, Saturday, August 28, in Manor Township near campus."
Matthew was transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center by the coroner for further investigation, the letter said.
The cause of the death of Mindler, who last acted onscreen in 2016, was not disclosed. He had been missing since the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 24, and last attended class earlier that day, the Millersville University Police Department said in a statement earlier this week.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Monica Mindler.

Washington (CNN) Two "high profile" ISIS targets were killed and another was injured in a US drone strike in Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Saturday, a retaliatory step following the terrorist attack that killed 13 US service members and at least 170 others outside Kabul's international airport.
"I can confirm, as more information has come in, that two high-profile ISIS targets were killed, and one was wounded. And we know of zero civilian casualties," Maj. Gen. Hank Taylor, deputy director of the Joint Staff For Regional Operations, said in a news conference Saturday. "Without specifying any future plans, I will say that we will continue to have the ability to defend ourselves and to leverage over-the-horizon capability to conduct counterterrorism operations as needed."
Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said all the targets were hit in a single strike, and that they were "ISIS-K planners and facilitators."
A US defense official told CNN earlier Saturday that one of the individuals was believed to be "associated with potential future attacks at the airport." The US located him and "had sufficient eyes on and sufficient knowledge" to strike, the official said, adding that he "was a known entity" but that the US is not calling him a "senior" ISIS-K operative.
The individual was in a compound in the Jalalabad area, another defense official told CNN, and new intelligence following the terrorist attack in Kabul was firmed up to give justification for the strike. The source said surveillance continued on the compound until the target's wife and children left before the US conducted the targeted drone strike.
"I'm not going to talk about specific capabilities ISIS may have lost in this strike. They lost a planner, and they lost a facilitator. And they have one wounded. The fact two of these individuals are no longer walking on the face of the Earth, that's a good thing," Kirby said Saturday.
"It is a good thing for the people of Afghanistan, it's a good thing for our troops and our forces at that airfield."
The announcement of the strike came a day after President Joe Biden vowed to retaliate for the terrorist attack in Kabul even as he said the frantic mission to airlift Americans from Afghanistan would continue. Biden approved the strike on the ISIS-K planner, according to an official familiar with the matter.
"We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay," the President said in remarks from the White House on Thursday.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) — A judge has ordered a western Michigan couple to pay $30,441 to their son for getting rid of his pornography collection.
U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney’s decision this week came eight months after David Werking, 43, won a lawsuit against his parents.
He said they had no right to throw out his collection of films, magazines and other items. Werking had lived at their Grand Haven home for 10 months after a divorce before moving to Muncie, Indiana.
The judge followed the value set by an expert. Werking’s parents also must pay $14,500 to their son’s attorney.
After moving to Indiana, Werking learned that his possessions were missing.
“Frankly, David, I did you a big favor getting rid of all this stuff,” his dad said in an email.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A gunman fatally shot a tourist eating dinner with his family at a Miami Beach restaurant as the man protected his 1-year-old son, police and a family member said.
Tamarius Blair Davis, 22, of Norcross, Georgia, told investigators he shot Dustin Wakefield, 21, on Tuesday night because he “was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” according to his arrest report.
Davis allegedly told police he approached the patio area of the La Cerveceria restaurant just before 6:30 p.m. and randomly decided to shoot Wakefield, who was on vacation from Castle Rock, Colorado. In a short video taken immediately after the shooting and obtained by WSVN-TV, the gunman can be seen dancing while people are heard screaming. The gunman then walks up some steps, the weapon in his hand.
Mike Wakefield, the victim’s uncle, told the Miami Herald that Dustin Wakefield died protecting his young son.
“This guy came in with a gun waving it, saying it’s time to die. He pointed the gun at his son and Dustin said, ‘He’s only a boy,’” said Mike Wakefield, who was not in South Beach but heard the account from his family. “Dustin stood up between the gunman and the baby and he shot him. He shot him multiple times on the ground.”
He said of his nephew, who worked in construction, “He was the kindest kid. He loved his family. He loved being a dad.”
Davis fled the restaurant, police said, and was captured in a nearby alley. Cellphone video obtained by the Herald shows Davis lying spread-eagle on his back and smiling as three officers approach with their guns pointed towards him yelling commands, warning him that if he touches his gun he will be shot.
Davis then rolled onto his side into a fetal position, before again rolling onto his back as officers approached. Davis screamed “I give, I give, I give” as officers flip him onto his stomach and handcuff him. The video shows a black handgun lying about 10 feet away.
Tommy Davis, the suspect’s father, told The Associated Press that his son had traveled to Miami Beach with some friends. He said his son has never been in trouble or had mental health issues. No arrest record for the younger Davis could be found.
“This is an unlikely thing,” the senior Davis said. ’We are trying to find out what happened. You can imagine we were shocked.”
He said he didn’t know whether his son would ingest mushrooms or other drugs.
“You think you know your kid, but you don’t,” he said. “It is possible someone gave him something. That is something we need to find out.”
Davis is charged with murder and was being held without bond Wednesday at the Miami-Dade County Jail. Jail records do not indicate if he has an attorney. Police incorrectly listed his last name as “David” in their original arrest report.

A freshman at Millersville University in Millersville, PA, Matthew has not been seen since Tuesday night & was reported missing late Wednesday after not returning to his dorm room & not returning calls from his family.
Police say Matthew was last seen walking away from his dorm at 8:11 PM Tuesday, wearing a white Millersville University hoodie with black stripes on the arm, a black backpack, jeans & white sneakers.
Cops say Matthew went to classes Monday & Tuesday but hasn't entered a classroom since.
We're told police are being flooded with tips & cops are following up on all leads.
Matthew's famous for his work as a child actor in 'Idiot Brother' and "Frequency" but he has not been acting for several years & just enrolled in college.

R Kelly is trying to sell the publishing rights to his back catalog, but no one wants to buy them.
The singer is currently facing an ongoing trial, on charges related to alleged crimes against five female accusers – three of whom were purportedly underage at the time – who allege physical, sexual & psychological abuse.
He will also face a number of other charges in separate trials, two in Chicago (one federal, one state), & one state trial in Minnesota. In 2019, it was reported that Kelly had just $625 to his name as a result of his ongoing legal battles.
He has been living in jail for the last two years & was recently ordered to pay $4million to a woman who accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 16 amid other legal losses.
Now, the singer is attempting to sell the publishing rights to his back catalogue, but is struggling to find a buyer, despite the songs earning an estimated $1.7million per year in the US.
This is despite a boom in the market, with the likes of Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Paul Simon & the estates of Nick Drake & Prince all selling their rights for hundreds of millions of dollars in recent months.
“It has been offered to me a number of times by his team & of course, I’ve said no for the obvious reasons,” Merck Mercuriadis, founder of the Hipgnosis Songs Fund. “There are incredible songs in that catalogue, but why would you take that kind of risk?”
Hipgnosis said last month that they have spent over $1billion on rights deals in the last year alone, including lucrative agreements with artists including Lindsey Buckingham, Blondie & Neil Young.
Another anonymous asset buyer, who passed on Kelly’s catalogue in 2019, said: “We wouldn’t go near it with a 10-foot pole.”
Kelly, has denied wrongdoing & pled not guilty to the nine charges in the ongoing case in New York: one of racketeering & eight violations of the Mann Act, which criminalizes the transportation of any woman or girl across state lines for “immoral” purposes, such as illegal sexual activity.
