Today’s passionate defense of Taylor’s much-maligned performance at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards by her record label president has drawn the ire of one its incidental targets: Kelly Clarkson.

Big Machine Records head Scott Borchetta said, in part, of Taylor, “”She is the voice of this generation. She speaks directly to [her fans], and they speak directly back to her. This is not American Idol. This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It’s not about that technically perfect performance.

Maybe,” he went on, “she’s not the best technical singer, but she’s probably the best emotional singer because everybody else who gets up there and is technically perfect, people don’t seem to want more of it.”

Clarkson, who has taken her own knocks in the press before, has sympathy for Taylor but is none too pleased with Borchetta’s defense—or the accidental Idol insult it implies.

This afternoon on her blog, Clarkson posted the following note:

Wow …..Dear Scott Borchetta,

I understand defending your artist obviously because I have done the same in the past for artists I like, including Taylor, so you might see why its upsetting to read you attacking American Idol for producing simply vocalists that hit ‘the high notes’. Thank you for that ‘Captain Obvious’ sense of humor because you know what, we not only hit the high notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the ‘right’ notes as well. Every artist has a bad performance or two and that is understandable, but throwing blame will not make the situation at hand any better.

I have been criticized left and right for having shaky performances before (and they were shaky) and what my manager or label executives say to me and the public is “I’ll kick butt next time” or “every performance isn’t going to be perfect” ……I bring this up because you should take a lesson from these people and instead of lashing out at other artists (that in your ‘humble’ opinion lack true artistry), you should simply take a breath and realize that sometimes things won’t go according to plan or work out and that’s okay.

Sincerely,

One of those contestants from American Idol who only made it because of her high notes

Honestly, Borchetta seems to have done Swift more harm than good today; the best defense is not, in all cases, one that is actually offensive to not only your own star, but also any artist who sings better than her.

Things he could have emphasized—Swift’s songwriting chops, her relative youth and inexperience, general human frailty in a high-pressure situation—were played down in favor of, well, coming off like kind of an ass.

But you tell us, readers—Team Kelly or Team Scott? They both seem to be on Team Taylor, ultimately, though Taylor herself might be better off with Kelly as a spokesperson.

Video After The Jump Lil Wayne was vocal about how humbled and honored he was to be taking over folk icon Bob Dylan's part on Monday night's remake of "We Are the World." But at the end of his soft-spoken comments to reporters during the recording session, the New Orleans-bred rapper added one more thought that instantly sent a buzz through the room.
"I think it's amazing what's been done for Haiti," Wayne said, gazing out at the assembled reporters and cameramen in a tent just outside the Jim Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood as he stepped off a stool and lowered the microphone. Then, raising the mic to his iced-out grill once more, he added, "But I also think it's amazing what hasn't been done for New Orleans." And with that, he walked out without taking any further questions. The pointed aside from the rapper was a rare ripple of controversy on an otherwise on-message night, during which the other artists who passed in front of journalists praised the efforts to raise money for the victims of the Haitian earthquake and spoke of the importance of giving back. It brought murmured comments such as "Kanye West" from some of the writers, who appeared to be comparing Wayne's verbal outburst to the "George Bush doesn't care about black people" tirade unleashed by West during the all-star 2005 benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. In light of the tens of millions raised privately by texted and mailed donations, the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon, and the more than $100 million and on-the-ground support provided by the Obama administration since the January 12 earthquake, Wayne's comments suggested that the Nola rapper feels that the same outpouring of support has not helped rebuild his hometown, which was devastated by Katrina in 2005. As much as he hates to go up against Weezy, Michael Hecht, president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., told MTV News on Thursday (February 4) that Wayne's comments don't accurately reflect what's going on in New Orleans. "The New Orleans region since Katrina has been the recipient of tens of billions of dollars of assistance, not to mention scores of individuals who have committed their time and effort to rebuilding the city and region," said Hecht, whose group is the leading nonprofit economic development organization in Southeast Louisiana. Hecht said that as a direct result of billions of dollars in cash and man hours that have been pumped into the area since 2005, Business Week magazine recently called New Orleans "one of the best places in the country to ride out the recession," with an unemployment rate that is consistently 3 percent lower than the rest of the country. "Perhaps there's some frustration on his part because it didn't arrive quickly enough or took too long to come online," Hecht said of Wayne's possible motivation for speaking out on Monday, noting that more than 55 percent of the billions in federal funds allocated for Katrina fixes has gone unspent so far. "But it's not atypical after a disaster of this size, like something on the scale of 9/11 in New York, where it tends to take three to four years for rebuilding to start because of bureaucracy, insurance claims and literally waiting for the dust to settle," he said. A spokesperson for Wayne did not respond to requests for further comment from the rapper for this story at press time. Hecht also said that certainly some of the more affluent areas of the city have been rebuilt faster because their residents have the means, but he said the notoriously impoverished Lower Ninth Ward, which was devastated by the storm surge following the hurricane, has gotten "remarkable and intense" attention. "Atlantic magazine said the architecture of the Lower Ninth was setting the standard for 21st-century architecture," he said. According to the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, the total recovery investment since the storm is $120.5 billion. "There has been unevenness and things are going too slow, but with all respect to Wayne and his experiences in New Orleans, the city that is emerging today is coming back as a place with massive reinvestment and reinvention," Hecht said. Karl Senner, 24, is a lifelong NOLA resident who lived through Katrina, jumping in an airboat with his dad the day after the hurricane and helping rescue stranded residents for days after. He told MTV News that the rush of help for Haiti might actually have everything to do with the slow response to Katrina. "I think the immediate support for Haiti can be credited a lot to the text-messaging giving, which is an avenue that wasn't really around five years ago," he said. "Also, I think responses to things like this has become an issue more so since Katrina. It was a learning experience for all of us." In some ways, he speculated, the lack of massive immediate response to Katrina was a harsh lesson learned and one that has not been forgotten in the years since. "In some ways, a big plus side of Katrina for New Orleans is that it's given the city a fresh start, a clean slate." MTV Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

The hip-hop star known as Eve, who is expected to release a new rap album this year, has been drawn into a massive U.S. Senate investigation into the illicit movement of millions of foreign dollars through the American financial system, a new government report shows. Senate investigators spent three years tracking money flowing into the U.S. from the accounts of her on-and-off again boyfriend Teodorin Nguema Obiang. He is the playboy son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, the corrupt dictator whose three-decade reign has been marked by rumors -- believed to be falsely spread to incite fear -- of cannibalism. Investigators believe most, if not all, of the millions in cash came from corruption related to the massive oil and gas reserves off the coast of the tiny West African country. According to the report released last night, Obiang used middle men – lawyers, escrow and real estate agents, and in one case, his then-girl friend, the statuesque rapper-actress Eve Jeffers – to allegedly set up shell companies in the U.S. Through those, investigators say, Obiang wired in funds that enabled him to buy luxury cars, a $30 million Malibu estate and place a down payment on a Gulfstream jet. Two Los Angeles lawyers allegedly carried out most of the scheme. They were summoned to testify before the senate today to explain why they set up shell companies on Obiang's behalf. Eve has a cameo in the report, as the president of what senate investigators described as a shell company. Obiang called it "Sweet Pink, Inc.," which was evidently set up in late 2005 "to employ individuals at the home [Obiang] maintained before he purchased the Malibu Property and to handle payroll and other matters related to the employment of those individuals," according to the report. It is unclear if the money may have also helped Obiang finance his elaborate efforts to woo Eve, which included setting up a record label and reportedly paying $700,000 to rent Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen's 300-foot yacht Tatoosh for a romantic Christmas cruise around St. Barts. Eve has appeared in movies alongside Hollywood superstars Daniel Craig, Kevin Bacon, Vin Diesel, Queen Latifah and Ice Cube. She recently starred on two episodes of the hit show Glee and is reportedly set to release a new album entitled "Lip Lock" this year. Her publicist did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The status of their relationship is unclear, though reports have since had Obiang linked romantically to others. If Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., has his way, Obiang won't be funneling more money into the U.S. to court women, or do much of anything else. The investigation, conducted by the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which Levin chairs, highlights the variety of loopholes that have allowed corrupt foreign officials to channel ill-gotten cash into legitimate American holdings. Video After The Jump Brittany Murphy died from multiple drug intoxication, pneumonia and "iron deficiency anemia" in what the coroner has concluded was a accidental death. The Clueless star, 32, was found unresponsive in her Hollywood Hills home on Dec. 20, despite frantic attempts by her husband, Simon Monjack, and her mother, Sharon, to revive her. Simon and Sharon said they believed Brittany's death was due to a congenital heart murmur and denied rumors that the actress used illegal drugs or suffered from an eating disorder. They added that Murphy's heart condition was diagnosed in her teens, but said she had received proper treatment for it. They also said that she'd been suffering from laryngitis and flu-like symptoms in the days before her death. A number of prescription meds were reportedly found by investigators on her nightstand. Simon says his wife was taking the painkiller Vicoprofen and the antidepressant Fluoxetine (also known as Sarafem) to deal with severe menstrual cramps, and that many of the other meds found were for his own use due to a seizure he recently suffered. The actress was laid to rest in a twilight ceremony in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. A full autopsy report is expected within two weeks. Source: People Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

Beyonce Knowles is to make a surprise appearance at the BRIT Awards. The 'Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)’ hitmaker was said to be too busy to fly to Britain later for the ceremony later this month but has reportedly changed her schedule in order to sing with Lady Gaga on their raunchy duet 'Telephone’. A source close to Beyonce – whose husband Jay-Z is confirmed to be playing at the show – told the Daily Star newspaper: "At first Beyonce didn't think she could make the BRITs. But now it's looking more likely. With her husband Jay-Z also on the bill it makes sense for her not to miss out." The singer has received no nominations for this year’s show, which will be held on February 16 at London's Earl's Court, but did home a record-breaking six gongs at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night (31.01.10). The American star thanked her hip-hop mogul husband Jay-Z as she picked up her awards, despite the couple rarely publicly acknowledging their relationship. When asked how the ’99 Problems’ star responded to her comments on stage, she told US TV show 'Access Hollywood’: 'He was shocked! He was just like, 'What did you say?’ and he said, 'You have six Grammys and you smell good.’ Music-News Underground Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

Foxy, she smashed the big homie? According to Foxy Brown, that may have been the case as it was implicated with her latest track “Let Em Know” featuring Lil Fame of M.O.P. and BAM. Back in the good old days, the Brooklyn natives were known to deliver some smash hits together such as “I'll Be” and “Ain't No N*gga”, but who would have known that Jay was giving his own smash hits directly to Brown? When the two were beefing, Nas was the first to spew out allegations that the two were messing with one another and some were under the influence that Brown became a little jealous around the time Jay was the head of Def Jam and signed Rihanna while putting her on the back burner, somewhat. Brown allegedly created rumors that Rihanna was getting “extra help” with her career and was sexual with Jay Z. The relationship became apparently became sour when she began to lose her hearing as sources reported that Hov felt like she was procrastinating on her album Black Roses and was in the process of completely dropping her from the label. Whatever the case may be, the truth always surfaces. First, Beanie Sigel and now Foxy Brown airing out the past? Check the track and be the judge. Fire Starter: Scoop DeVille Scoop DeVille is about to explode this year, although he made his first rap-video cameo 20 years ago. When he was reaching his terrible 2's, Scoop's dad, legendary Latin MC Kid Frost, held him in his arms in the video for "La Raza." "That's all I was around, was straight music instruments, rappers, singers, dancers," Scoop, born Elijah Blue Molina, explained about his upbringing. "I got to go on the road as a young kid. I went to 'MTV Jams' when I was a kid. I got pictures of Fab Five Freddy holding me as a baby. I saw my pops go from nothing to having everything. When I was a baby, my pops had three jobs. He was making his ends before 'La Raza' came out. When that dropped, it was a life-changing experience. It was cool to see that and see him make business happen. I soaked it up like a sponge." Scoop, now 22, started making music when he was 13, and his father encouraged him to follow his talent and dreams. He bought equipment and instruments. Two years ago, Scoop got production duties on Snoop Dogg's Ego Trippin', but late last year, he delivered his music-industry calling card, supplying the track to the Dogg's blockbuster "I Wanna Rock." The track samples Rob Base's voice from "It Takes Two." "It's actually bigger out on the East Coast than it is on the West Coast," Scoop assessed. "The record is real beat-driven. When I was doing the record, I said, 'Whoever gets this record, it's going to be a big record.' " The big homie Snoop was the lucky recipient. "I just had a couple of crazy records," Scoop relived. "At the time, me and Dogg was trying to do something new for the new generation. He always listens to all the stuff I'm involved in and keeps his ears to the street. He's a godfather out here. I went to Snoop with it, and I already knew he was gonna do something magical with it and take it to the next level. It was something we wanted to put on the map, as far as hip-hop records are concerned. "I got a call from Snoop a couple of days after I shot it to him. He was like, 'These couple of records, don't give to nobody. These are them,' " Scoop added. "Sure enough, he did the thing. We went to the studio, laid it out. That song, he was like, 'We're gonna go over the top with this one.' " The record's immediate allure had MCs from Styles P to Fat Joe to Young Jeezy making unofficial remixes, and Jay-Z jumped on a Snoop-sanctioned remix of the record. "Oh my God, dude," Scoop recalled. "I was in the car, I got a call, like, 'Jay-Z's gonna rap over your sh--.' I'm 22 years old. I'm young. I'm a creative person. I'm in the studio every day. When I heard that, I was amazed. Jay is one of my favorites. He's an inspiration." Next up on Scoop's roster are Young Jeezy, Fat Joe and Busta Rhymes. "Out here, I'm known for making crazy sample records and making things people wouldn't normally use," he said. "There's so many records I have, like the 'I Wanna Rock' record. The one I got coming out with Fat Joe is gonna be twice as good as 'I Wanna Rock.' The one I did with Busta is gonna be three times better. It's like a science. We're trying to bring the hip-hop sh-- back. I'm excited about what could happen this year." MTV Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has just ended much angst by signing to fight Pomona's Shane Mosley in a May 1 welterweight fight between two of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters, Mosley's attorney told The Times. "Everything's good to go, it'll be a great fight, and the world will see what a great fighter Shane is at 147 pounds," Mosley's attorney Judd Burstein told The Times. The bout is expected to be staged at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Minutes earlier Wednesday, promoter Richard Schaefer just hung up the phone with me to talk to Mayweather Jr.'s manager after expressing frustration with the delayed signing of the unbeaten Mayweather (40-0). "I don't know, he just hasn't signed yet, I'm told everything is OK," Schaefer had said around noon. "It would've been good to have him sign two days ago. We could've gotten him down to Miami and talked to all the [reporters] on radio row. I really don't know what's happening. I'm told the signing is forthcoming." He was right. Source: L.A. For a decade, Lil Wayne has been hip-hop’s great unstoppable force, a 24-hour-a-day recording machine without an off button. But on February 9th, Lil Wayne will have to stop — for 12 months, when he reports to prison to serve a sentence for gun possession stemming from a 2007 arrest in New York City. Rolling Stone stays up all night with Weezy as he prepares to get locked down in our new issue, which is on sale at newsstands today. “I don’t like to stop,” Wayne tells RS‘ Chris Norris. “I believe you stop when you die.” So in the weeks before he reports to Rikers Island, Wayne is keeping busy — recording tracks bound for Tha Carter IV (the album Cash Money staffers call “C4″ because it’ll be the bomb), shooting videos with his Young Money protégés, spending time with his growing family, and deliberately not asking anyone for advice about life on the inside. “This is Lil Wayne going to jail. Nobody I can talk to can tell me what that’s like,” he says. “I just say I’m looking forward to it.” While Weezy’s away, his label is relocating to New York to be near him, and his manager Cortez Bryant is exploring ways to keep Wayne in his fans’ minds for the duration — from jailhouse Twitter accounts to endorsements. “I’ll have an iPod, and I”ll make sure they keep sending me beats,” Lil Wayne says. Tha Carter IV — which Norris is told features tougher, faster beats — is scheduled to arrive shortly after he gets out. Read the full story in the new issue for Wayne’s comments on giving up drank, growing older and fearing God, plus a close-up look at one of his intense late-night recording sessions. After being shot at an Atlanta car wash and hospitalized on the morning of January 19, Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame was released and returned to his home on Sunday. MTV News spoke with the MC on Tuesday in his first sit-down interview since the incident. The New York-born MC (real name: Juaquin Malphurs) was shot in the arm in what he said was an attempt on his life, not a random burglary as police initially said.
As he sat in his home outside Atlanta on Tuesday, Flocka seemed to be coming to grips with the ramifications of the incident, but also inserted humor into the conversation. "How I feel?" he responded when asked, taking a long pause to find his words. "I probably feel like this is like my first day of school. You know how you go to school and you're insecure about your clothes? I'm insecure about how a person will take [the story of] what happened — the truth. I'm excited, though. I'm trying to get right but the arm and back is killing me. The [prescribed] pills ain't working right." Flocka said that on the night before his shooting, he enjoyed a night out, performing at a local club and partying with DJs Drama and Holiday. He said he chose to check into a hotel rather than drive home. The following morning, he intended to get an oil change for his car but wanted it washed first. The shooting took place at the Bubble Bath car wash. Waka admitted not being very cognizant of his surroundings at the time. He first called his mother and manager, Debra Antney, who also manages Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj and OJ Da Juiceman through her Mizay Entertainment business — and then made another call. Flame put his phone down and turned to talk to his friend B.C., who was in the passenger seat. With his window rolled down and his head turned, Flocka said a man ran up to the car and stuck what looked like a Glock 19 handgun in his face. "I [was] like, 'Good night.' I ain't know what to do," he recalled. "At first I thought it was a joke — I thought it was one of my friends playing, like, 'Boy, you slippin'.' Then [the gunman] said, 'Boy, you already know what it is. You slipped.' I was like, damn!" Immediately, the rapper started thinking of ways to escape the predicament. "I had three alternatives," he said. "Back [the car] up. I thought, 'He would probably shoot me in my face. I ain't trying to go out.' I'd rather fight for my life, get shot fighting. Or I could hit him with the car on some crazy Tom Cruise-type stuff. He probably would have shot my partner, then shot the car. "I'm thinking like, 'I don't feel like paying for this car's damage. I ain't got time for that,' " he added with a smile. "A third alternative was my jewelry: Why not hand him my jewelry and try to get out of the car so I could have some defense. I had a ring on, a watch, my chain on and my bracelet. I took my ring and was like, 'You can get it, man.' I started getting the quick stuff off, making him feel like he's the winner. So I took my ring off, took my bracelet off, gave it to him, took my chain off slow." Waka recalled that when he started to pretend he was having trouble taking off his chain and watch, the assailant let his guard down and allowed him to get out of the car. The last item to come off was a Breitling watch. Waka hung the watch on his fingertip and when the gunman reached for it, the MC grappled with him and reached for the firearm. When he leapt forward, the assailant shot him. The bullet hit Flocka's right arm and traveled into his torso. Pain coursed through the right side of his body. "He took off. I wanted to chase him so bad," Flocka told. "It's like taking your pride, your dignity, but it's nothing I could do. My friend, mind you, I don't know what he was thinking. I wish he would have got out and fought with me. But sh--, it's over with." The police have not announced a suspect in the shooting. MTV Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper

In an interview set to air Sunday on CBS, imprisoned Plaxico Burress vows to play in the NFL again and said he apologized to the Giants for tarnishing the organization. "I will play again," Burress said in the interview with his former Steelers coach Bill Cowher scheduled to air on CBS' "NFL Today", which was conducted from the upstate New York prison where the receiver is currently incarcerated. Burress said he works out about four times a week in the prison to keep in shape for a possible comeback. "It's not LA Fitness or Bally's, but I do push-ups, sit-ups," Burress said in the interview. "I make do." Burress is serving a two-year prison sentence for violating New York's stringent gun laws Burress said he wrote a letter to the Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, apologizing for his actions. "I told them how sorry I was about bringing all this bad publicity to such a stand-up organization," Burress said in the interview. Burress, then a Giants receiver, was at the Latin Quarter nightclub in November 2008 with a .40-caliber gun tucked into the waistband of his track pants. He later said he was concerned for his safety because a teammate had been held up at gunpoint days before. The weapon slipped down Burress' leg and fired, injuring his right thigh. The gun wasn't licensed in New York or New Jersey, where Burress lived, and his Florida concealed-weapons permit had expired. He also failed to report the incident to authorities. Prosecutors argued the bullet narrowly missed a security guard. Cowher, who was Burress' coach for five years in Pittsburgh, told the New York Post that he believed the receiver was being sincere in the interview. "He looked me in the eye. I believe he was sincere," Cowher told the newspaper. "I think I know him well enough to know that ... "He admittedly blames no one except himself. He's had a lot of time to reflect. He's had great, unwavering support from his wife. ... It's been an eye-awakening situation for him. He had a daughter born when he was in prison. It's very sobering to be in there. When you walk through the door, and you listen to him talk, you can see it's very genuine." A work-release application for the ex-Giants star was denied by the New York Department of Correctional Services last month because of the nature of his crime. He is expected to be released from prison in July 2011. Burress became a Super Bowl hero when he caught the winning touchdown pass in the last minute of the Giants' 17-14 upset win over the previously unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants released him last April. ESPN Follow Me @Twitter.com/ChasinMoPaper
